I like to include a SMALL STRIP OF SANDPAPER with all my survival matches to use as a striker. Sandpaper works much better than standard box strikers.

@@shanhutchison7332 a strip of 60/80 grit sandpaper would reliably work under most circumstances.

The weatherproof matches now come with sandpaper inside box aswell as box striker.
The biggest enemy of matches is longterm storage. The humidity kills them.

Old school technique for lighting a tobacco pipe in windy weather is to feather the matchstick very slightly so the wood catches the flame better, also if you wipe the feathered matchsticks in molten candle wax you both prevent water ingress and give fuel for the flame 😁

I take a uco storm proof match and drive it down the center of a tinder quick to increase burn time to approximately 2 to 3 mins...( the hole in tinder quick is made with an awl from a victorinox pocket knife)

What they need to do is start releasing strike surfaces that are waterproof because if the box itself gets wet, those matches are useless

Amen to that. Strykers for matches are ridiculously poor performing.

Clear nail polish from bottom up works well to help keep waxed matches burning. Also waterproof match safes still work great with a piece of 60/80 grit waterproof sandpaper. Add a small tin filled with petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls or 2 tubes of lip balm 1 for fire starting, other’s for lip protection. Also if you’re in an area that

I'm wondering about the storm proof matches. Great if wet, but what about the striking panel on the box???? If the box gets wet will the striker panel still work to ignite the match??? I've never seen that done. What do you think? Are the storm proof also strike anywhere???

    • @PhillyFlyersss

They are not strike anywhere & if the box gets wet it is very hard to use the striker panel. But, a good tip for ya, take some waterproof sand paper ( 3M flexible is what i prefer) and throw it in the box. Ive found multiple grits to work. Hope this helps!
