  • Fall has finally arrived here on the Texas coast so it is time to sow the annual carrot patch. This year I'll be growing carrots in a small raised bed. Come along as I bust the myth that carrots are hard to grow.

It is cooler now it was one heck of a summer, so hot so so hot I actually like the fall gardening I’ve already started my carrots and all my jalapeño plants are kicking back in I still got two watermelon’s hanging around but I’m really switching over to cooler crops cabbage, brussels sprouts collards ate some of my own collards this morning. No yesterday for lunch.

I started my fall plantings at the beginning of this month on my little patio (zone 8 TX). I planted the 1st wave of Baby Fingers Carrots on the 1st . I'll plant more in another container tomorrow. You're right about the summer. It was so hot on my patio that my OKRA died! Imagine OKRA dying from heat! It was the craziest summer season I've ever had. I lost so many plants--I was barely able to keep my peppers alive, and only my 2nd year Banana Peppers hung on long enough to fruit again. The only leafy veggies I was able to keep were in constant shade the whole summer--my yellow Chard and one Kale plant. Soooooo thankful for the cooler weather upon us now!!!

The old Scott is back!! I'm so happy you're back on the grid and seem to be in good spirits.
I was thinking about you the other day. I had to take a 30+ year old yew bush out of one of my flower gardens. Of course it was quite the challenge and it reminded me of the video you did with your bushes.

Sure hope you have a good harvest. I have one pepper plant that started to bloom and one cherry tomato plant that has bloom. I’ve kept them watered and then I stopped. It was so very hot. Well the nice slow rain came after no rain for so long and I went out to water my GreenStalk and notice the blooms. So I started watering. The cherry is a sweet little orange tomato and there’s bloom and a tomato on it. I forgot the name. All I can figure is they really wanted to live. I’m in Houston so you probably get a little more rain through the summer than we did. I’ve lived here all my life, but this summer was brutal. Our Son, Daniel and his wife went to the Texas Motor Speedway. That day it was the hottest race on record. I’m thankful that’s over, although we are predicted to hit 93 on Friday. Thanks for sharing Scott.

Yes! My Jalapeno plant is also putting on fruit like crazy. I don't know if you remember my journey in the last few years, but I've shared some of it with you. I'm in an apt. and this year was my best year by far. I've learned so much from you and David the Good.
Got 4 tomato plants and they're still doing well. I'm in zone 7b so we still have some warmth left. I'm basically pruning back and trying to get whatever's left on the vine to ripen. I have harvested 41 tomatoes so far and have 47 on the vine. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to harvest every single last one, but that's okay!
My Jalapeno plant has 26+ on vine and I've harvested 17 so far. Lastly, I had some success with an Okra plant and just harvested 2 pods this morning of roughly 3" each.
My failures this year included 3 Bell Pepper plants that did absolutely nothing, a Squash plant that (I think) tried really hard but just didn't have enough space/sunlight, and a Cucumber plant that grew like crazy (lots of males) but never really developed any females. Oh well.
I think Squash and Cucumber do better in the ground, but again, I'm working with roughly 4-5 hours of sun a day. I'm also composting now and it's one of my favorite things ever. Thank you so much for your helpful and in-depth guides over the years (especially regarding composting). They have been such a blessing!

I lost my currants too here is south Texas. My newly planted fruit trees have done fine through the drought. I watered deeply and pretty often. I need to weigh down my apple branches. My stone fruit branches are looking good. Planted lots of fall veggies. Cucumbers are a couple inches.

We don't have much left of our garden but 2 or 3 catalopes almost ready and a rogue eggplant that I think our 7 year old snuck in the mix, and it is thriving. I hit the dollar general when they had 50% off the already 50% off. So I got a ton of vegetable and flower seeds for .25 a piece! Great video and Hello again from Spring up I45 the North Side!
