    I tried your method of tying down my apple tree's branches last winter to be more horizontal and quadrupled the harvest from the previous year! Thank you.

    Hi Scott! Cypress, TX, here. Thanks for the informative video. I'm just seconding your advice on pruning your trees to keep them small. I have about 18 fruits trees, plus blackberries, blueberries and a garden. I planted my trees around the perimeter of the yard on roughly 16 ft centers. I keep them pretty small, but not as small as yours. None of mine are on dwarfing root stock. I wish that I'd of planted them a tad closer together. Over the last couple of years I let some of my trees get large enough that I couldn't pick the fruit from the tops, even with a ladder. So, this spring I cut them way down. My fuyu persimmon was about 15 ft tall, it's down to about 4 feet. I probably won't get any fruit this year, but last year it was so tall the birds got the fruit instead of me, what fruit didn't drop early due to the drought that is.
    For those that don't know, summer pruning does help keep your trees at a manageable size, and it also makes the main branches thicker and stronger, and they shoot off lots of side growth, which is fruiting wood. Last year was the first year that I've ever summer pruned the stone fruit. Wow, am I ever glad that I did! The main branches that I left got much thicker, and they threw off a ton of lateral fruit wood! They are blooming right now and they look furry they have so many blooms on the side shoots.
    I thinned some of my fruit last year, and it looks like I will need to do it again this year. I'm hopeful anyway!
    I'm going to graft on two varieties of jujube, one new plum, and a peach that I picked up at the local scion exchange 2 weeks ago.
    You have some neat apple varieties. I had a Fuji that never produced in 15 years. I cut it down and a root stock sucker popped up a couple of feet away. It's a little closer to my pear then I prefer, but someone gave me a Carnivale Apple scion that I'm going to graft to it. I saw a pruning method where the growers kept their apples tall and very narrow. I'm thinking of trying that.

    Looking good Scott. Not boring at all but there again we have 3 apple, 2 pear, 1 cherry, 3 peach, 1 apricot, 1 mulberry, 1 elderberry. Have on order 1 cherry and1plumcot both bare root. You mentioned in your video a citrus tree. Is that tree Lucy? -- How is Lucy. Did she make it through the 2023 heat wave? Side note. Been Praying for you my brother. -- I wrote you a year ago and commented on your breathing being labored. I hope it is because of you being a little over weight but you seem to be having a difficult time catching your breath. I never mentioned it but I spent the entire month of February 2023 in the hospital. I found it very difficult breathing. They discovered I was in congestive heart failure. I had a simple (through the groin) procedure done. and I am doing much better. Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA

      Yes, Lucy is a Meyer lemon and my only citrus that is in the ground. She threw off all her leaves as usuaal when bad weather comes around but she managed to live through this latest freeze.

    I planted 5 fruit trees last week, and pruned them. I'm encouraged to see they will grow back. Haha.
    I did spray with dormant oil and copper fungicide today.
    I lost 4 apple trees in a different area last year, so I'm trying to do better.
    New ones are planted much closer to the garden so i can tend them better.
    Keeping them small should help a lot.

    Hello Scott 👋
    So as soon as fall was done, I went into getting a young man to come and help me give my pear tree a hard hard pruning and we did that and I cut at a 45° angle. That’s what I’ve been told but we did a pretty much like a butcher job. The tree was just so overgrown, so I figured I wouldn’t get no pears this coming year This coming season but I think I’m wrong as of yesterday and today I see so many blossoms coming out now I don’t know if the flowers will drop and not give me fruit but I figured it would skip a year after that hard heart pruning, but it looks very pretty so far I think by next week, the blossoms will really be in full force and I’ll take a beautiful picture of that and I am lucky if I’m lucky I might get Pears 🍐 this year this Season 🍐🍐🍐

    Are particular pruning styles beneficial to certain fruit trees? Or is it okay to experiment with whatever style? When should you start pruning? We are thinking about planting a few trees this year for the first time, and it seems kind of daunting. But you posting this video is perfect timing!

      Yes, pruning to a particular growth habit or 'style' matters. Depends on the fruit tree variety. Check out my playlist entitled "Backyard Orchard Culture" and also check out the book "Grow a Little Fruit Tree" by Ann Ralph.

    • @yellowdog762jb
      @yellowdog762jb 4 месяца назад

      Just try. If you mess up, the tree will recover and you can try again. Don't avoid pruning just because you are worried you don't do a perfect job. Some trees Really like to grow with a central leader, others tolerate several trunks in a vase shape. If you have a reason, you can go with a non traditional pruning technique, like an apple or pear in a vase shape rather than with a central leader. But you will be fighting the tree's natural growth pattern, so it will take more work. It's a lot easier to follow the general rules.

    Hey, good to see you. Have you ever tasted a saturn white peach? They have smaller fruit but the meat grows like a tire around the center and sticks out flatter than larger - unusual as is the color, but the taste is incredibly sweet and peachy. I had a chance to get one on sale but don't have a place to grow it in the sun without 15 deer surrounding it immediately. Dang, I always thought I loved deer but they sure are destructive. This is me, Mary W from down in FL but my handle got switched and I have no clue how to get it back. Weird. Your smaller trees look like a tasty summer coming up.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 месяца назад +2

      Its not too late, better to do it when dormant but the tree won't mind.

    My 4 variety pear tree was put in this year. One type seems to be a leader, the other three go of to the side. Each type has two branches. How should I prune that? I don't want a tall tree like my neighbor, and I don't want it to be diseased like hers was this year. Most of her fruit rotted this year although last year she had more fruit than she could handle. I've watched sites that say pear trees should not be branched horizontal because they will break when fruit becomes heavy. I'm so confused but it seems to be the time soon to do the pruning. I value your advice. Any suggestions?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 месяца назад +1

      If you are concerned about weak branches allow the tree to grow more vertically but also thin branches at the main trunk. The fewer branches coming from any single area on a main leader means stronger branches.

    When should I prune in Iowa?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 месяца назад

      Best time is just before they trees break bud from dormancy. I'm not sure when that is for Iowa but just wait until the trees are dormant and go for it.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 месяца назад +1

      Sorry to answer so late but prune any time the trees are dormant, try to get to them before they wake up.

    I had a terrible issue with mice and rats in the garden last year. I put four cats on both patios and in my greenhouse, but rats ate one of my fig trees down to about 3” Does anyone know if it will grow back?

    • @ChivoXL909
      @ChivoXL909 4 месяца назад

      Figs are pretty tough so as long as the root ball is good it should come back. I don't have rats, but do deal with their cousins the squirrels who also love to chew down my trees and a few years ago they got my Chicago hardy fig down to nubs, but it came back in spring and still got a few fruits before winter set in.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 месяца назад

      If it has a decent root system it will come back. Fig trees are stubborn and often refuse to die.
