Yeah, they weren't kings, but I think if you want to connect it to Christ, you might say it's to celebrate that Christ is in us and he's the King of Kings.
However, there is a fair consensus that it was tradition bought by the Romans to do with their own worship of some god. But like many very old traditions, we'll probably never know.

It could be something to with the fact that Christmas dinner used to be seen as a feast fit for kings, therefor we all wear paper crowns for xmas dinner. Or it could be something to do with Jesus being the king of the Jews. Or a mix of both these things.

The tradition of wearing hats at Christmas goes back to the Roman Saturnalia celebrations (around 25 December) when all gathered wore hats. Some say the wearing of a paper crown may have originated from the ‘Twelfth Night’ celebrations, where a King or Queen was appointed to oversee the festivities.

The paper crown tradition can be traced back to the ancient Romans, who wore festive headgear to celebrate Saturnalia, a festival that took place around the winter solstice.

The paper crowns started in 1066 after the great fire of London, when the Christmas meal was being cooked they put them on their heads and if they caught light they knew the Turkey was over done and they quickly threw a bucket of water on it, therefor preventing another great fire of old London Town.

Christmas kicks off with Carols from Kings" at 3pm on Christmas Eve, while we are making the last batch of mince pies!
Felipe thinks we are heathens, he would be surprised at how many of us head off to a service at Church at 11 pm
for Midnight Mass ! We also have Christingle, where we are handed a Candle as we go in, sometimes that is a separate
service during the Christmas period too.

Out of curiosity, I clicked on the link for Fortunato belts. It takes you a page where you need to login to Instagram. Not good if you don't have Instagram. So I then clicked on the website address and all you get is their page with the notice "coming soon". You may want to provide a link that anyone can use to get through to the site where you can purchase something. I hope that you all had a great Christmas.

Means you take yourself too seriously, you're no fun, whole point of Xmas is to be jolly, throw away some of your inhibitions. The crowns do make people look ridiculous, that's the point, it's hilarious seeing the serious people wear them, it pegs you down, I love them.

  • @carlhartwell7978

Anyone who refuses to wear a crown will look out of place themselves, personally I've never known it happen, the consensus is that it was a tradition bought by the Romans who wore them to celebrate one of their gods. But most see it today as a silly thing that if we all do, we can make fun of ourselves together, you already know self depreciation is a core part of being British guys!
As far as how long it's worn for, well of course it's not usually all day! I mean likely most take it off at some point during dinner or certainly at the end of dinner, with some die hard's not relinquishing it for hours! I think mostly though you'll get people surreptitiously taking it off when no ones looking with the excuse of scratching their head or something...then _forgetting_ to replace it.

or added to the Turkey bones and bits and pieces to make a really good stock for the gravy etc!
REAL bread sauce simple to make at home, is also something many of us make. just white breadcrumbs
added to boiling milk, flavoured with a tiny pinch of cloves, and a final touch of cream
This is kept hot and handed round with the turkey, oh, and dont forget the Craberry sauce !
Lilian, you cannot beat a Delia Smith recipe book I for all these traditional recipes, she was THE go to
in the 70s and 80s, even the 90s for her fabulous traditional recipes. Also you can still see some of her

Christmas Day is the one day of the year when you don't mind being a bit silly. Wearing a paper hat/crown, (which is mandatory within the inside of all Christmas Crackers), is part and parcel of it. It's a, 'party', thing. Those things where you're supposed to enjoy yourself! 🤣 Although, they're usually worn somewhat ironically as, (particularly with older people), they're far from contented with wearing such nonsensical items but just go along with it anyway. Being made of paper of course, they're prone to tearing quite easily and becoming too large to fit on your head. Which is one excuse for not being seen wearing one. 😉
'Spastic?' _(sharp intake of breath)_ You can't go using that word nowadays, you might offend someone, somewhere and at some time in the future. That's usually how all that censorial nonsense works, isn't it?
