ADHD and Anti-Social Personality Disorder: Minimizing the Risks

  • In this interview conducted at the NYU Langone Child Study Center on Feb. 24, 2012, Rachel Klein, Ph.D., talks about one of the findings of a first-of-its-kind research study, which followed children diagnosed with ADHD into adulthood. While a majority of the children went on to successful adult lives, around 20 percent developed something called Anti-Social Personality Disorder, which is strongly associated with negative outcomes in adulthood, including substance abuse and criminality. Dr. Klein talks about warning signs that begin during the teen years, and what parents can do to minimize the risks.
    Dr. Klein is the Fascitelli Family Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Director of the Anita Saltz Institute for Anxiety and Mood Disorders at the NYU Langone Child Study Center and Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, NYU Langone Medical Center.

    My brother has an ASPD diagnosis, he’s almost 30 now, catching up to me.
    But I just wanted to throw in something positive and say.. I’ve always loved him and I still do.
    It’s a disorder, I see it like any other. It’s how he is and how he’s going to be so I’m ready to accept that, always.

    My dad has ASPD. He used to shoot his neighbours with special guns filled with wood, tie explosives to dogs and lots of horrible things. Whenever he talked about he was laughing and seemingly proud of it. He was beating me until I was 5 and when I started going to school he stopped but kept on hurting me physically just enough to not give me bruises in visible places. He’d also throw things, yell, kick the dog, slam things and break things too. When I was crying he was just going harder. Growing up he stopped beating me noticing I was growing smarter and able to tell someone about it so he simply started being abusive verbally (arguments every day with my mother at the dinning table, finding anything wrong or slightly badly made as an excuse to scream and be rude). It’s been months that my mom and I ran away with my sister and my mother announced that she quit him. He’s been showing up at my sister’s job and forcing her to go take a coffee with him and eventually I got arrested due to a fight with my mother so the only choices I had was “go live with your dad or go in another family”. They called my dad but I got back to live with my mother. Now he knows where we live and he often shows up to give us gifts to get us back. He also asked me lots of times to go back to him and lied about having a new girlfriend and financial support. He actually wants to use me to not pay the child support to my mom. His whole life revolves around him and he likes being a coward to others. He loses his job because of his character and I’m glad that this will soon be over. Please do not get involved with ASPD people because you find them “different” and “interesting”.

    This girl understand people like me who have all this. Don’t get me wrong some do enjoy hurting others but most do only get enjoyment out of hurting others if it’s a revenge thing at least for me. Like if I was to be an asshole to someone for no reason I’d feel really bad, but if someone was an asshole to me or did something really mean I enjoy making their life a living hell as bad as that sounds.

      I’m having trouble myself. I thought I was safe from this kind of thing; and I let my guard down in the process. Eventually, I came up with the theory that instead of admitting to my dark deeds, I instead created the illusion that I cared for others through my ability to feel empathy. I do get aggressive and tend to stray from a “good” trend once in a while; however, it always leads to me questioning my morals as a person; and whether or not what I’m doing is logical.

    I was diagnosed by one therapist, who was also a nurse practitioner, that based on what I told her, no friends, no feelings, no regrets (lately), and difficult interpersonal relationships, and harming animals, that I likely have anti-social personality disorder..
    But I just don't know, a few roommates thought I had more autistic/ Asperger behaviors and symptoms, plus I do cry. I get upset about things, I have emotions. My mother has stage IV cancer which she was diagnosed with about 2 months ago, and I cried at the hospital, I cried on the way there. I cried a few days ago when I hugged my Dad, and so did he. I don't seem to "manipulate" people, I have a charming personality, but that's just a facade since I don't want to be some weird quiet guy with people I work with. I try to get to know people, and sure I can't always relate, but I honestly think this is related to Autism. I also have a very hard time communicating, socializing and picking up on social cues, I have no idea how to talk to most people so I'll often ask questions or sometimes I do talk about myself too much- without realizing how bored the other person is.
    I tried to explain this in a mental hospital months ago, but they didn't see it that way. They said they didn't see any Autism behaviors, or symptoms, even though I was telling them I was depressed, anxious, and severely damaged from some things that happened when I was a child. I have trouble with the opposite sex, I drive the speed limit, I've gotten in one wreck in my life and it was after being in a bad place mentally, and lack of sleep. I pay my bills on time (I have two credit card lines), no one helps me out with them and I don't demand money from anyone. I also don't blame my parents (this goes back and forth sometimes) for how I came out as an adult. I was however diagnosed with ADD when I was a kid so who knows. Maybe someone with ASPD can let me know if I sound like I have a personality disorder or not. I do tend to avoid people, its just a trust thing. I also don't really know how to interact properly with people or how to make friends properly. I'm 31.

      I am no expert but U have anti social personality disorder; u don’t have autism; one of my close family member have same symptoms as u describe here; I lived with that family member for years(can’t tell who is that )
      It’s genetic or some time how did u grow up (childhood- major part) which gets u ASPD;
      Therapy is the best way to treat this or some coach can help;
      Even it’s uncomfortable at-least do one thing everyday which can make u proud about ur self like learning new instrument or learning anything new. My family helped this family member by boosting her self confidence, telling her everyday that she is perfectly normal, do meditation, read books, make new friends, get use to it, best is make a new long term goal of life, everyday work toward that goal, go to park, amaze ur self with achieving something, again I am no expert but I have live with this kind of person : they are overachiever and if they fail in life or lost someone or getics also play major role they get this symptoms and get the ASPD. But it’s perfectly curable by therapist and self help( meditation, exercise)..
      good luck

    • @somexp12
      @somexp12 2 года назад +2

      No professional, but I knew a guy in HS who seemed to fit this description and had an ADHD diagnoses myself that briefly seemed to go down that road.
      You could probably infer the answer from this video, which is (imo) "sort of". The lack of empathy (in actuality, they'll probably have plenty of socially useless empathy) is not primary but a defensive response to a difficult situation. People devalue standards they struggle to live up to. If medication makes it more manageable, they have less incentive to devalue those standards, *however,* a lifetime of defense mechanisms don't go away the moment their usefulness is over. They still need to relearn all the mental strategies others learn but they neglected because they wouldn't have worked for them at the time. This can be very difficult for a person to do after a certain age, and the difficulty is only compounded if they have a whole bunch of new stressors (like a criminal record) making those new strategies unprofitable.

      showing any empathy or sympathy towards people like that only opens you up to be taken advantage of. they will see your kindness or care as weakness. they can't help themselves, its just how they are wired. they are not going to see things from your point of view or lens. they have an entirely different outlook on the world and will size you up for whatever weaknesses they can find and try to play on that.
      The sociopathic brain lives in a constant state of survival mode. in survival mode, the brain is numb to the suffering of others completely shielding them of any emotional attachment allowing them to see others as objects.
      You are much safer viewing them with indifference or coldness. The honest sociopaths you see that get interviewed will also agree with me on that one. Save your kindness and empathy for those that truly deserve it. caring about sociopaths is wasted energy. they should be treated with disdain and contempt and should not be allowed rights.

    I did not say anything later I found out his name was William Joe Quinn a registered sex offender drug pusher and pimp
    this person has been in and out of prison all his life he also tried to start a fight with my friend when he was in a bar a while ago.
    Recently I was riding my bike down his street and he yelled out something I went back to see who had said it and it was him he later ran out of his house to the the street where I was I just stood there he told me that he didnt like me and that
    I was wrong for his small town(im from Philadelphia) and he was angry because 3 years ago he was belligerent but made no attempt to take a swing at me but threatened me that if I went down his street again he would do something about it I notified the authorities .Question is ,is this a typical sociopath ? and how do you deal with anti social personality disorders like this?

      ADHD is actually a lack of dopamine receptors in the brain. It is something your born with. People with ADHD like myself tend to get into trouble simply for the dopamine high. I have done a lot of stupid shit cus I was bored. ADHD is also often paired with other disorders and mental issues like anxiety, depression, and BPD. It’s not something you get from trama but from my personal experiences I have it really takes a tool on your mental health because of people’s lack of understanding. I have been called lazy, slacker, annoying, useless, and a number of other things. Meds have helped but they don’t cure it which is something people get wrong all the time and always expect me to instantly not have any symptoms. The meds are an aid. You have to put in a lot of work and effort into functioning normally. It’s neurological, not something caused by trama. You just tend to get people who don’t understand.

      It's much, much more complicated than that. ADHD is caused by genetics. It's inherited. That's why it is so common in families. There's also Increasing evidence of how ADHD, autism, bi polar and schizophrenia are caused by the same genetic roots - if you have one you're much more likely to have one of the others too. There's also some discussion about how trauma can magnify ADHD and make it worse. Antisocial personality disorder is a broad concept, and in many people who have it it's probably a mixture of both genetics and upbringing. But in some people, the symptoms are broadly caused by genetics alone. It's known for example that antisocial personality disorder is much more common in people with Schizophrenia too.

    I’m getting married to a man that has a son with this exact disorder, however I have 2 babies and another on the way. His son has almost if not all the symptoms listed, he tends to be quite violent with both his peers and the babies, he once kicked the 2 year old and pushed a girl because she didn’t “do what he told her” now he’s the one getting bullied but I also heard he’s getting in trouble because he’s fighting back cursing. I fear for the babies and I fear that he’s quietly veiled a vengeful grudge towards us and I fear in the future if he doesn’t get the right type of help he will do something irrational. His fathers in denial and everyone that’s close to him agrees he’s in denial about his son. When I finally gave my fiancé an ultimatum for him to get his son some professional help the psychiatrist he sees every month prescribed the boy adderall which I feel is just brushing off the true situation. I know they don’t like the word “sociopath” but it’s better than being in denial prescribing a child something that probably won’t even help him. My question is.... is it normal to prescribe a child with this disorder adderall for ADHD? Will it even help? I just think ADHD stems from this disorder as do many things but it’s not right to just grab one of the branches (ADHD) and run with it. This child has been having numerous conduct disorders, he knows waay too much for his age, ONLY getting excited when he talks about death and violence, and now I’m about to marry into that involving my babies to this madness. Please help I don’t know what to do.

    • @sorrelbee113
      @sorrelbee113 4 года назад +2

      ADHD is a developmental disorder. It does not come from ASPD. Additionally, a child may have conduct disorder, but cannot be diagnosed with ASPD. Impulsivity, sensation-seeking, and even aggression are common in ADHD, and stimulant medications like adderall can help with all of them, and enable a patient to make healthier decisions.

      I think you're mistaking ASPD with something else. From what I know (I'm no expert, but my psychology professor literally just taught us about this disorder today and I've tried to look into it before) these are the kind of people who love and find joy in hurting others for no reason. They feel no guilt, they're impulsive, they're compulsive liars, etc. I feel like you're just depressed, I would talk to someone, whether that'd be your school counselor, your parents, even friends. I'm not saying you have depression, but you may be feeling depressed, because you're 13. That's very normal.

      My problem is, I do something really bad, like, I throw people out of my life, like my good friends, I just start ignoring them and completely despising them all of a sudden, and that doesn't happen only once, when I'm doing it, I feel no empathy about it and I really don't care, I just started yelling at them, but then when they leave me, that's when empathy starts to kick in, and what I did really bothers me every night. And when I was in elementary school, I was just a mess. I remembered when I simply got mad, I started yelling and hurting the kids from other class (and I don't even know them). It's just so embarrassing now. And when I get mad I hurt other people for it. I remembered when I tripped, I blamed my cousin(for doing absolutely nothing) and pushed her really hard multiple times. And back in elementary again, I did something really bad, I told the girl in my class to "go to hell"(but she was a bad person) so she told the teacher, so what I did was I cried to get myself out of trouble, and when I got out of trouble, I immediately stopped sobbing and I was pretty much satisfied. I did a lot of bad stuff before because when I'm currently doing it, I feel nothing about it, but now I look back to it, it was just embarrassing, but the thing is, sometimes I'm still like that, and I can't control it, but kind of different, before I yell about it, but now I talk normally but with kind of a threatening tone. I talked back to my grandma, and I felt nothing doing it(but the weird thing is, when I was talking, i was really harsh and threatening causing her to shut up, and she would usually still yell at me), but then after I talked I regretted it and I don't feel like I was in control. One time, when I was reporting in front of the whole class, the girl from my class started talking about me (I don't remember) and then I stared at her with a blank face, and it lasted for a while, I was like just glaring at her, and then I snapped back to my senses, and it was so embarrassing, the whole class saw me glare at her like that. I'm sorry for ranting, I just can't get this stuff off my head, I couldn't tell anyone because they might think I'm weird, am I? I really don't know. Actually, just don't mind my comment, forget about it, this comment is just me being weird, yeah bye.

      No.not at all. Punitive punishements and rewards aren't effective at changing long term behaviors. Check out Ross Greene ..I think that's his name and his lives in the balance collaborative approach to high risk kids and teens. He wrote the book the explosive child and raising human beings. The basic premise is that kids do well if they CAN. So it becomes a skills deficits issue. Whereas schools typically believe children do well if they WANT to which is a motivational issue. The problem is that's mostly not true and is ineffective. Then the job is to find out what are the skills deficits are and too meet them. What are the real problems underlying the behaviour and how to solve them. I have worked closely with a trauma informed practice as a preschool teacher for 10 years and I have a teenage son with ADHD and bi. Polar. I have researched this alot and have alot more research to do.

I remember what people say one and one. I get baffled when I talk deeply with people and they can't remember. Maybe I feel a little bitter and retract from the world. Opening my mouth is like breaking down a wall for others to attack. I am honest in my own feelings, and it's nothing to do with the person but I speak it and they take it as an offence.
    But then again is a diagnosis a box?
    We all have different layers, maybe we all have our disorders? Maybe the majority who are successful have a disorder and we don't? Who can say what's normal or not?

    If sociopath took Ritalin, Provigil or any ADHD drugs they might feel guilt and shame and not know it until the third to fifth time taking ADHD medication

      adhd is a genetic disorder, and can be treated with proper understanding of what the disorder is but for many people who actually have it, and weren’t misdiagnosed like most with “adhd” are, the disorder will never go away. i know because i have adhd and bipolar disorder and they both bring on a lot of pain, stress, and depression for me. i’m being treated for adhd at this time, but just like major depressive disorders, my adhd will never go away and i will always struggle a little harder than people without it, if there was a magic cure for adhd and bipolar disorder i would *gladly* take it but there isn’t. adhd is not a “child disorder” it is a seriously over diagnosed disorder that has a major impact on your life and social skills, so much that in some aspects it is indiscernible from autism spectrum disorder. ( sorry if this is long and unnecessary but this topic hits really close to home since i have been bullied and ridiculed by my peers for years for something that is very hard for me to control and change, i also have a control complex, that is getting better without as many toxic people in my life, but it’s made my anxiety worse and my depression as well, and my parents don’t believe that i’m depressed because “there were no depressed kids back in my day!” or “ you just need sunlight!” i’ve tried to explain but it always explodes and my parents just end up walking away thinking i’m just a selfish kid because i always “seem happy” and a lot of times i just want to stay in bed and never get up, that’s why i just want to drop that shield, but it’s frightening because i feel i’ll be attacked by the people i should be able to trust the most, living like this is in no way fun or permanently curable, my social understanding is weak at best and i can go feeling absolutely nothing for months or even up to a year. )

    Bullshit. There are MANY adults that have all the signs of an antisocial personality disorder but who are described by their parents and other adults that interacted with them when they were children as "good kids".
