  • Antisocial personality disorder is a disorder associated with hostility, impulsivity and deceitfulness. Associate professors Birgitte Thylstrup and Morten Hesse, Aarhus University, Center for Alcohol and Drug Research, discuss the clinical features of antisocial personality disorder, as well as how patients with the disorder view themselves, others, and the world.

Thank you SO much for this video. I was trying to learn more about antisocial personality disorder & all I ever see or hear is that they’re basically just heartless people that manipulate & hurt everyone in their path and can never change or improve upon their behavior. I know someone with ASPD & I was pretty scared when they told me & that was all that I could find anyone saying about the disorder. They’ve definitely done some very hurtful & manipulate things but I’ve also seen them do and say some genuinely really nice things & go out of their way to help people when they didn’t have to. They are human. And the way you explain it as seeing the world as out to get them makes sense in a way I never thought about before. It makes sense that when you’ve been through a certain amount of trauma & poor relationships you would see the world that way and not feel as much remorse for hurting others. I wish we had better treatment for the disorder but I’m sure we will with time.

      @bonezbaaaby 2 года назад +18

I have borderline personality disorder and today I was just talking about this. Because we have lessened empathy being borderline as well. I think that it is a form of narcissistic suppression that dominates what is societally acceptable to what people can and can't say or can and can't feel. Just because I want to laugh if somebody talks about a death or I don't care does not mean that I'm heartless. It means I simply don't have enough empathy to go around for more than my inner circle. And I shouldn't be expected to care because I don't and it's not my fault.
What I can control is not outwardly laughing about it or saying that to people that might hurt them.
My idea is that people don't like to hear that impulses don't define us but our decisions do. Because it means that they have to now be responsible for their own decisions instead of hating on those who never decided to be this way. Basically it's a way to scapegoat people who actually have a heart, but it's just not what everyone else is used to.

Although I’m not officially diagnosed with aspd, but seeing many with a diagnosis in the comments section makes me feel like I can relate. Honestly, I can’t tell anyone about my inside thoughts (which I call my dark self). I honestly don’t have a deep sense of what I think is empathy. Sure I understand what it should feel like but I don’t have it in me to start crying, even if someone starts crying over a death of another. I can only fake these feelings just so I don’t seem cold to the person I’m talking to. But on the inside Im thinking “why are you being so emotional” or “I think this is over doing it now”. However i truly love my family, but only in my little circle of trusted people. I value loyalty above all. And that’s how I think about the people I truly love. Are they loyal to me and can I trust them? There’s so many reasons I think I have aspd but the only reason I don’t want to get it tested is because incase it could get me into more trouble. I know how the world would perceive me if they knew. Like it could affect judgment if I got into some kind of trouble in the future. Not that I’m hoping/ looking to commit any crimes or hurt anyone.

@@strnglhld I'd say ASPD is generally worse since people with that diagnosis are more likely to be physically/verbally aggressive compared to people with NPD. Both disorders are based on an antagonistic disposition towards others, but ASPD also has a disinhibited component, which means more angry outbursts and other impulsive, potentially dangerous behavior. The two disorders have many similarities though (e.g., lack of empathy, interpersonally exploitative), and it's not far-fetched for someone to be diagnosed with both. My point is, I would not get into any kind of relationship with someone who has traits of either.

I'm at the "older" stage described in this video. I'm a self aware sociopath, which is very hard to take, because when I was younger we were just described as arseholes. But getting someone to the self aware state is important, because then the behaviour becomes easier to catch early. Problem is, when I was younger there wasn't a human alive who could have told me. Be there, always, but make sure there are clear boundaries set that you stick to. If they are making you feel bad about yourself then explain this and withdraw with the firm notion of not returning until you're treated with more respect. They WILL come back, trust me, and it may happen again, but each time will be a lesson. I'm sorry to say, it takes time.

I'm exploring this concept (and others) as I am actively striving to better understand and resolve my many personal issues.
Concerning this topic, in this video the diagnosis generally seems to be defined as (in accordance with its name) being "anti," and from what I gather, the consensus is that this 'diagnosis' aligns with more of an ACTIVE/CONSCIOUS state or stance of opposition to social/cultural norms/qualifiers/traditions/values/etc. (please correct me if I'm wrong, I honestly prefer that scenario).
I'm interested in these details as (since being introduced to the term/concept) I identify AS anomie and as such, related diagnoses and designations (the good, the bad and esp. the aloof/unclassifiable) intrigue me.
I am one, living in a word of many that seemingly reject or are commonly offput by the mere notion of ANYTHING falling into the ("would/should be,") MAJOR "category" of "other".
For me, the "illusion" of safety was annihilated in utero and harboring a WEALTH of resistances is more the case than any "fixation" with control or some power struggle (again, I'm striving to understand rather than proclaiming anything; I acknowledge that my perspectives are warped, but sadly that fact doesn't make the feelings that accompany them any less real or palpable . . . At least not yet)
Also, I'd love to hear your impressions on assimilation and cultural variations (overall and in relation to this subject). Asking a lot, I know, but any feedback/input would be appreciated.

We are completely misunderstood and all automatically capable of murder. You just are a more logical rational thinker and avoid or block out emotions completely and it’s easy to do at the snap of a finger and remain in this state for hours or even days. You view the world outside of home as a a hostile environment and it doesn’t help when home is, or was, a hostile environment, so all you really know is hostility and there no other way to make it besides being unemotional. Living like this throughout childhood and into adulthood makes it hard to live any other way because this way of being had always worked in our favor and always does. This is also where the control thing comes in.

      ANKA.
Well said and well explained but unfortunately you do have the first part wrong, which is not unusual for people with initials AJS because it's been scientifically realised that you it hard to relate to people in full, when you state that you are completely misunderstood, you've obviously based that on your own vicinity IE your parents or rest of family or friends, but worldwide that is not the truth at all, there are many billions of people who understand and others who are finding out and trying to realise it day by day.
And using that phrase that we are all automatically capable of murder is totally irrelevant, it's as if you are saying that all people with antisocial personality disorder (as it's called, although by the fact that my psychologist I don't use disorders like that I just use descriptive singular words), are capable of that rather than anybody else and the fact that everybody is capable of murder - as you said - with that phrase you need to ask yourself what percentage of people do actually murder? it shouldn't be used at all.
And very last of all it is actually treatable, it's not a quick fix but it's most definitely with A very good therapist, preferably psychologist, so don't give up hope but you will only be fixed if you want to be....

So, one needs to be affable and amenable to allowing others to have their own way within their lives to be considered "social?" One must conform to everything in order to be "emotionally healthy?" It seems that the ones who define such labels and terms almost invariably tend to not share the same end goals for their own "emotional health." By that I mean, it seems that those who wield power in our society (including medical "authorities") tend to have no regard for anyone but themselves and their own ends, and then label anyone willing to stand up for themselves, i.e. those not amenable to being controlled by those same people, as "antisocial" or abhorrent. Must be nice to attain the level where crime, lies, and manipulation have no consequences aside from a pay raise and an attaboy. But let one of the plebs try and attain self-determination and initiative, and they are immediately labeled an extremist or antisocial.
Is it possible that the world is a battlefield, and that those who embrace that reality and actually achieve at a high level because of their acceptance of that reality also try and convince you to be (and raise) ineffectual dipshits worried about how many friends they have? Could it be?

As someone with aspd, adhd, mdd, ptsd, etc who lacks emotional empathy, and remorse, etc. Who is being helped for the sake of my own gain by going to psychotherapy, behavior therapy, medicated, etc . Yes I do break the laws and get away with it for personal gain, but I do not harm the young, the ill, disabled, women, pregnant women, or the elder. I could, if I wanted to without remorse or care, but to me I would despise to make the whole world my enemy instead of an ally for my gain. Do I have a conscious at least enough to hold me back, but when angered to me your nothing more than a liability, and no more than an animal that must be disposed off.

I think most laymen people think anti social is acting shy and not wanting to be around people which i always thought that’s what it meant , my ex was diagnosed with this disorder and Opposional Defiance Disorder , anti social. As well as intermittent explosive anger in his teen age years up to early and mid 20s , I thought he outgrew them mostly hes in his mid 30s and we met 4 years ago when he was 32 , but after my research I believe there is residue and some spectrum on what level i have no idea but he is high functioning for sure But i have witnessed him breaking down a door and hid in fear and the police were called and i was told by him that a year before he met me he pulled out a gun in a road rage incident with his child in the car and one time when we argued he pulled out a gun and cleaned it in front of me . Never once had he touched me but need less to say i was in fear , i grew up with an abusive father so this is why i accepted it and although I’m old enough to know better and feel ashamed for not leaving i accepted it and tried to help . It’s only now that I’m grasping after our breakup and these videos have helped me make sense of his thinking and behaviors as well as his past . When he divulged his past I think I failed to really grasp how serious it was . I thought it was a phase from his past because he was a successful business man and very charming and passionate and obviously dysfunctional myself i didn’t protect myself . God I feel naive and stupid , the scary thing is I still love him . I’m just as sick 😢😢😢

      Dear Truth seeker,
I'm really glad that this video helped you make sense of your experience. Remember, there is no sight like hindsight. If your ex was truly antisocial (and it sounds like it), one significant feature of the disorder is that he will hide his true character, gaslight people around him, and that he will be skilled at both, which means that you are not stupid.
In my opinion, it's not sick to love someone. I so hope that you find the love and friendship that you deserve in your life.
      Best thoughts,
      Morten

Example: I was with a company for 9yrs I left that company for 12yrs, and was asked to come back. I didn't forget a single thing about the paperwork. The problem was that I was treated like a freak when in fact I am just smarter. The problem with people with mental illness is a lot of us is smarter than others when we find our comfort zone. Normal people have been threatened by that. How many so called "witches" were killed just because they were smarter in a different way? You have to be careful when you are on a higher level.

I find that people with limited vocabulary (not foreigners) also have low empathy. (Foreigners go though a poor logic phase before they acquire local language)
They have limited labels/descriptors to enable adequate comprehension of human interactions. They regard the acquisition of an extended vocabulary as pretentious - 'acting above one's station'
They get along better with inanimate objects, protocols and animals and people who agree with EVERYTHING they say and do.
    They are emotional toddlers.
They become frustruted quickly - which then turns to assertion - which in turn becomes aggressive/violent. Other people note this and rather than cause a fuss fall into step with them.
They are loud talkers, because loudness = 'honesty.
I seriously believe that i have PTSD/Hypervigilance from a life of working alongside them.

It affects me so much at work, needing to drink just to cope with the nervousness. I feel like a lot of people after awhile notice it, and then therefore judge me for the way I act. I had social anxiety, and from personal experience it goes away! Never completely but it went down by 95% over 4 years by exposing myself to social situations even though it was agonising i was heavily suicidal. I exposed myself from a small to a large degree as it got better. There's a real thing called exposure therapy and it has a high success rate, but its gradual improvement like going to the gym you won't see an improvement until one day your like woah that payed off i did it.Try not to run away from it. If you take any steps to face it, little or small whenever necessary, and facing the pain rather than running away it will get better. However, if you only decide to hide away it may only get worse because you are giving full reign to the enemy that wants complete control ( that subconscious fear). The native Americans had a parable about the white wolf and the black wolf, that is: if you feed one wolf (a good side or bad side of self) it will grow and the other wolf will weaken. Whatever part of yourself you feed will grow stronger, good or bad. Whatever you starve will weaken, and if completely starved, to only skin and bone.
