    I'm so glad you talked billy into letting you diagnose the problem because in Billy's video Rob wanted to take it back and Dremel the spacer which could have gotten Billy hurt l'm glad you picked that battle Bill he is lucky to have you.

    • @dougj.8288
      @dougj.8288 2 года назад +8

      He did want to dremel it but, rob did say he wanted to look for the rub marks. So maybe they would have figured it out, it just makes you nervous when you got one guy throwing out idea and it’s like let’s put our heads together here and get it figured out.

    • @strangefruit8776
      @strangefruit8776 2 года назад +4

      Yeah I was hoping that if they went that route they would bolt the spacer to the carb with it off the manifold to check the clearance before they went to carving on it. I know the feeling just like I’m sure every son does. Hell I still feel the same way Billy does about his dad with my own. But it doesn’t hurt to at least hear what your dad has to say whether you agree with it or not. I don’t race like Billy does but I’m in a very similar situation having worked for my dad most of my life so I know what it’s like growing up and wanting to do things my own way after butting heads for so long.

    • @taylor5542
      @taylor5542 2 года назад +6

      I know right..... I was cringing at the thought of someone hogging out a spacer. Put the dremel down and step away from the bench.

    • @irwinbryanc
      @irwinbryanc 2 года назад +2

      A clear red flag went up when the fuel lines got shortened - “cleaned up,” - ultra amateurish move. No secondary thinking; why would these fuel lines be so long?
      When the Dremel comment came up, I just cringed at where his mind went. After all the safe success with the S-10, this guy is who Billy has entrusted as new crew? Oh boy.
      Yeah, Bill IS ornery as Hell, and it would do him good to seriously wrangle that in, but he’s got a huge heart, a ton of wisdom, and a very sharp, methodic mind when he calms down. The dude massively cares, and he thinks holistically about the race cars, and you can’t farm out that level of attention and reasoning.
      He just needs to attend Miss Vicky’s Finishing School.
      Billy has a huge heart too, easy to see that he’s trying to help Molly see her potential and doesn’t want to be just another person who writes her off. Sure, at first he was chasing some blond tail, (who didn’t) but now it’s clear he really cares about her getting her self together.
      Bill and Billy are very alike. Bill just needs Billy’s help to learn to keep a cool head and pay attention to what comes out of his mouth. Bill needs to support Billy as he works through his life choices, realizing that Billy is just applying the Old Man’s values; “we might not have the best stuff, but we work hard and we don’t give up” - Billy’s just happens to be applying that ethic to his relationship. Honorable man.
      It’ll all sort out, I just hope it doesn’t take catastrophic failure of a race car to grow these two back together, respecting and enjoying each other.
      I love them both and the new fingers on the cars seriously scare me.

  • @greglange3048
    @greglange3048 2 года назад +5

    I commented on Billy's video, but I'll repeat it here.... "Remove the wheel locking pin/plate in the steering column. Steering will not lock when key is turned off. Also handy in the shop, you can roll the truck without needing the keys." Good Luck.

    • @54raceman
      @54raceman 2 года назад +2

      If i would’ve been in the old mans shoes I’d probably have smashed that stock column with a dang hammer the second billy mentioned it locking up on him so he didn’t have a choice but put a racing column of a gutted one in it
      Stock columns with everything still functional have no business near a race car and neither does stock ignition with everything still on the key switch. I’ve seen stuff happen way to many times that would’ve been disastrous if the vehicle didn’t have a in line master power switch and a panel so everything can be able to be shut off separately

    Time to be frank. You saved the kid's life. Time for him to get his head out of his a-s and see things as they really are. I was Chief of Safety, Reliability and Assurance Engineering for an aerospace firm. I know risk. I got the stripes to speak on risk. Murphy bites you when you least expect it. Both your kids should be in full fire suits, with gloves and visors DOWN for every pull down the track. They are making their career behind the wheel and strapped in. That risk needs to be mitigated. They are not casual "racers," they are "pros." Time to act like a pro. Just because they've "gotten away with it" for years, does not make it risk free. Tom Bailey's experience with fire should be taken as gospel, and not dismissed. You might not be able to say it to him, but I can. Guess I'm just another angry ol' man... to some.
    PS: All the cars need a paddle type kill switch that can be swatted at with a gloved hand to shut her down. Turning a key at those speeds is insane with a locking steering column. ... a locking column in a race car? ...c'mon man! ... then there is the 'chute....

    That would be extremely hard as a father. Stepping back and your son's safety is no longer in your hands. I think your right. You need to step in and say something when something could go awfully wrong. Those boys need to respect that when you do put in your words of caution. That throttle locking sent chills down my spine. There's not many people going to walk out of a wreck at the back of a track with that mph. That truck needs a proper kill switch. If that truck is going to be faster than last season safety needs to be a top priority.

    Just a suggestion Bill, I know you do not want to weld anywhere near those shafts on the linkage. But I certainly would get some epoxy, and maybe even mix in a drop of red food coloring into it, mix it up, tape the bottom of that other 1:1 hole that linkage that it was originally in, fill that hole (since it could be forgotten to never set it up in that hole again, by someone else), fill the hole, add red tape, allow it to set up, then add 2 red tape dots to remind never to use that linkage setting. (Just trying to fill that dangerous hole with something that would not be easy to remove, and not get in the way of proper rotation, and stand up to carb chemicals also).
    Could save a life.

    The first time my oldest sun went down a track his throttle hung open on something I built. Luckily he had the experience to hit the kill switch and save it. That was the day all my race Jeeps, trucks, and cars had kill switches from then on. It’s so easy to just flip a switch instead of fumbling with a key switch. I know what you felt. So glad you found the problem. I’m a Carb guy like you and I think you are on to something about the MPH out the back. If you have not been getting all the secondary that has to effect your MPH. Excited to see the new trailer. And I understand picking your battles. My Marine son is like Billy in a lot of ways. I have to pick my battles with him as well. Another great video Bill…

    That was 1 of the 10 things, take the base plate off, have either Holley or a great machinist drill and pin with roll pins wide open on those blades so they cannot roll over center, older 750's and 780 double pumper had the same issue with the linkage if the rod was not bent just right, they solved it by pinning.
    Still, get rid of the steering column lock and add ignition kill switches on all race cars. That steering wheel locked on that first pass for a second when he rolled the key.
    Sure loves that 1050 though. Happy sleep and lower blood pressure for High Drama things you can control Bill, screw the other battles you cannot win. But safety gear, always, alcohol fires, no fun.

    So....I'm with your old grumpy ass on this one, anytime them boy's sit in them machine's......it's full on safety gear!!! Just because the last 499+ pass' have been safely carried out....you will never be able to predict any malfunction, Rather it be in your control or not and this will come with time....bill, can you remember when you became 28-30ish and all the stuff your ol' man "pitched a bitch" about seems to start making a little more sense than when you were 18-26??? Don't ever quit being that grumpy ol' man....but patience is a virtue!! Boys.....please do not skip any safety measures that you can control, you get one chance, that's before you get into that hot rod....after you let that trans break go, it's now in God's hands.... nobody gets to second guess gods plans!!! Much love from onadaga drag way!!

    The kid needs to get his head on straight and get rid of the stock pedal setup and put a race setup in it when toe return and scrap the stock steering deal and get rid of the lockable steering and put everything on switch panel and inline master shut off

    I am no keyboard expert..in fact I've only built one drag car but maybe a master shutoff inside the cab is a good idea? Reaching for the key on the big end was sketchy..glad your family had a great Christmas.

    WOW, really glad to see things went the way they did, some other methods could have taken place. The way I see it the Old Man might have saved the day. Looking forward to the trip to the dyno and the improvement we might see due to some changes. When I seen Billy in the truck, first thing I noticed he has his denim coat on but no gloves. I'm a motorcycle rider from way back and I believe gloves can play a big part even in drag racing, Billy put your F***ing gear on!!!

    Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all. It was nice to see you and Billy working together again great family action. I no longer can race anymore to old but I do for a hobby scratch building 1/24th scale model cars. My knowledge of drag racing and owning the real thing has made me make the smaller ones very real. I sure enjoy your family and it helps me build my little ones would love to show you sometime. God bless you and the family for the future.
