I bought one of these based on your video...I should have researched more. Connect any drive? Only if the drive is formatted fat or ntfs. No mac formatted drives. My most recent cameras, Nikon z7 and Panasonic G9, format their cards exFat. This unit won't read them either.

Just READ what Ravpower itself says about the product on Amazon:
    Please note:
    1) Due to the limitation of the Apple iOS system, you can ONLY access the Photos folder on your iPad/iPhone; File hub is currently unable to sync with media files stored in iTunes to USB storage devices due to digital rights management (DRM).
So, just one question: CAN I copy (txt pdf etc) files from the FilesFolder to the external SSD, or can I NOT?

a while ago Seagate came out with a hard drive that has its own app, wifi, and internal battery just so you can do this in an all inclusive package, i wouldn't bother with the adapter unless you have a specific hard drive you want to use. i think sandisk also has a wireless flash drive that does this.

Looks like wont be traveling without a pc after all. if this is right it is a pretty big oversight by apple, if that is the reason it wont do it.

@@MyCrimsonMischief yeah, one of the things that makes people mad about iOS is that if you plug external storage in, it opens the Photos app basically. They don't want it to be easy to avoid buying music and videos from iTunes without relying on a computer. Yes, I have the WD wireless passport for just that reason but it is very slow to transfer. The Passport does have another party trick though as it has an SD card slot. You can do photography backup in the field..... just start the device and insert the SD card and an indicator will show the progress.

Hasn't made sense for Apple to do this until recently because of iOS. If they add a slot for more storage then users would expect to access this from any app. Now we have a Files app this kind of thing is more realistic. Can't say I've missed this feature though. On the rare occasions I wanted physical external storage i just use a tiny cheap sd to lightning adapter. Everything is internet based these days.

Are you kidding, right? The whole point of having a hard drive direct connection is exactly to avoid the need of a Wi-Fi Connectivity to Support it. what you’re suggesting is obviously possible also through a cloud storage or with a NAS, but it’s not the point

  • @stevens6654

The very cool aspect of this technology is that there's a new way to use your iPad Pro's storage - and that's really good news. Of course, a user probably should have realized in advance that their disk space may be inedequate; I'm certainly not going to buy a 128GB machine when I need 256GB. Not having enough storage means swapping data, drives, and backups when the whole situation could have been solved with some forward thinking. That said...this Samsung solution is pretty inventive.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 5 лет назад +1

Sry but this has some downsides:
    - you need to have that device carried with you
    - it needs to be charged
    - the Wi-Fi Interface interface is occupied by that device
And 100 Bucks Yeah it's not expensive but it gets way more cheaper.
I prefer cloud storage, there are plenty of options out there to host your stuff in the cloud storage (nope it doesn't need to be Apple) or in your own house as well if you prefer the physical control over the storage as well.
I use a combination of all the options above, I have that Apple iCloud Storage cause it comes with the account, I have a cloud storage at a data center, Dropbox and my own NAS at home. I'm not willing to drag a hard drive and it's clunky "WiFi Adapter" around to have more storage.

  • @TheBaconVanMan

This is WAY too slow. If you have enough content to move around that you need a terabyte hard drive, you'd lose your mind dealing with this. I can't even imagine trying to send a video file to edit over this thing. It took forever just for the image previews to show up. Video?? Forget about it.
I wish there was a plug and play method to take advantage of the USB C port. I'd ditch my Macbook in a heartbeat if storage wasn't such an issue when working with client video and photo files.

This is no solution at all. Out of the box, the iPad can connect to a filesystem with video on it. This gives almost nothing further. If it had a filesystem that allowed access to non-media files and reliably allowed a send to app function, then fine. But the fact that you don't even mention this lack seems deceptive. I love my iPads, but this is nothing new at all.
