- A Spring 1990 trip starting at a busy Shirebrook Depot, before moving on to Clay Cross where there's some great Class 37 thrash, some Class 47 clag, Class 58's on MGR's, screaming HST's, and more!
What can you say..New units, old 150 livery..108/101 combo!! A couple of 253's and a 254, Duff's and Peds on parcels. Nice bit of Tractor (37/5?) action. I remember Shirebrook, we used to visit on a Saturday with the Class 58 loco group ( Steve from Swindon a legend) :-) Class 58's the best thing BR built, but they only built 50! If they had built 300 they would still be in service. Oh well, the old days. A shame I carn't see 56's any more....
Hell, we used to visit these wwhen David was about 8 years old. Wonderfull memories Darren..When I worked as a chef in the railway mens lodging house on Mill Road Bridge the some of the crews who stayed came from Clay X etc...I was getting £ 35 for a week of 6 x 12 hour shifts. You can tell this video is 'yesteryear' NO SPIKED FENCES....lol
Its amazing how Iconic most of these locos have become!
Nice memories, thank you
You're very welcome, thank you.
Thanks Chris. I think the late 80's to late 90's was a great time to be about and witness the huge changes on the railways - seems very tame today in comparison.
They gradually broke down because they didn't get overhauled under EWS, gradually replaced by Class 66's.
The same happened to the Class 56's, which stayed in service later than the 58's because there were more derelicts to rob for parts.
The same goes for the Class 60's until DBS realised their potential (they're more powerful than 66's), and a number of them have had overhauls done on them, with more to come.
Nice one Daz.
Lovely shots and some real gems in there
Thanks Steve. It's just south of Chesterfield where the Derby and Nottingham lines split - the shot from the bridge has changed very little, you just can't get down by the trackside anymore. Some 58's went to work in Holland, others to France for high speed line engineering trains, but all over here now in various states of decay, apart from an example saved at Barrow Hill - let's hope that gets back on the mainline(or heritage railways)in the future.
Thanks Ian. Some never to be repeated stuff in there for sure.
Bloody awesome Darren. Clay cross looked like a good spot, where was this ? Also i think this the first video i seen 58's working. Where are they now ?? Any mainline working 58's left ? These video's are truly amazing..Cheers for sharing Darren :)
Opened a flask or three @ the Clay in the day, Ta.
They all got withdrawn during the late EWS era, some went on to work abroad, but sadly many are just shells that are left over here now and not likely to see any use again, unlike the returning 56's of recent months.
My granddad was a engine driver out of Shirebrook west loco - 60’s 70’s 80’s -1993 / Bernard Betts
Now he would have seen some real changes in traction!
Its a different [railway] world.
I've watched it twice !!
It was always a great spot here, pretty much anything could turn up in this era, with the new Class 60's about to appear as well. A real shame the 'Bones' aren't being re-activated like the 'Grids' and 'Super Tugs'. I'll ignore the 56's comment........ ;-)
It was a great spot, but now with those spiked fences it's only the bridge shot that remains sadly - otherwise i'd probably visit here once a month!
Cheers Tony.
Things have certainly changed indeed, and from an enthusiast's(and driver's too i bet)point not for the better. You probably feature on some of my movies then as i filmed quite a bit around the Midlands in this era.
Thanks :-)
Different indeed. Must be good if you've watched it twice :-)
Corker! :)
