When I first found this band, I was fascinated by the instrumentalists. I thought, "The singers fine, but damn, that drummer is insane. Listen to that bass! Are you kidding me with this guitarist!?"
It took too many songs for me to fully appreciate what Saiki brings to the band. Now, I can't imagine what they would sound like without her. So, I'm glad you recognize her ability right from the 1st song. She and Miku are magic together. Cheers!

The lyrics are based on the anime it was written for, Platinum End, and the orchestral opening was written by Kanami at the producers request, and it was her time writing that type of thing! Kanami or Mincho, as she is known, is a compositional genius! All these ladies rock!

Since you're embarking on the journey, a little assistance in matching names to the Maids:
Saiki - (blue rose in hair) lead vocal, some lyrics, Queen of the stage demands your attention live.
Miku - (red rose in hair) rhythm guitar, second vocal, main lyrics, band founder, PR genius, heart of the band, our Pigeon (..later)
Kanami - (maid headpiece) lead guitar, main composer, shy rockstar transforms into the riff monster (aka Mincho)
MISA - virtuoso bassist - really! Artistic and precise - our barefoot-on-stage assassin in black
Akane - drums, master of beats, composer of amazing fills and transitions throughout, elevates every song

Don't worry too much about the lyrics here as it's written for an anime opening theme song. Plus you'll miss watching all the amazing playing! Personally, I just watch and listen the first time, then look at the lyrics the second time. But doing it vice versa is fine too if lyrics are your thing. That said, Miku does write very meaningful lyrics, very thoughtful and often referencing things like Shinto or Zen philosophy, Japanese culture and deep expressions about human emotion. Just one of many reasons why they are THE best Rock band in existence.

Band Maid is a true example of synergy. Each member is highly talented, but collectively becomes an entity of immense proportions. Even in the early years, performing average quality music that was written for them, you could sense that. Right from the start, they just seem to click together.

Enjoyed your reaction. I am almost 70 and have heard some of the great bands but for years I wished the 60's and 70's we're back until two years ago I heard this little bad with the monster talent and while those past bands were great they could be put into a genre box (most of the time but of course there were a few that jumped in and out of that box.) Band Maid is their own genre as you will come to see. They have rejuvenated my love for rock music and music in general. Wait until you hear acoustic versions of these fast songs. There isn't anything they cannot do.

Yes, these ladies are the total package. And of course they write (by now) their songs themselves and are responsible for the lyrics. :)
No one less than the founder and our master pigeon Miku (pigtails, with the red flower in the hair) is responsible for them. But to be fair, Saiki is also quite involved by now and has already contributed the lyrics to one song completely by herself. As it happens, this song can be found on the single of this song here and is called 'Corallium'. :)
As I indicated above, it wasn't from the very beginning the case that they wrote the songs themselves, or rather, they weren't accepted by their label at the time. Only for their third album, they got the green light to release one of their own songs. This one is called 'Alone' and fortunately there is also a nice MV for it. :) That from the following fourth album, all songs came from their pens, I think says it all, doesn't it? :) Should you check out this MV sometime, pay attention to the title, the setting and the story of the song! The ladies are not only good with words, but also damn good at putting allusions and meanings in their videos. 😉
But to be honest, the next one I'd recommend you to watch is the song without which we wouldn't be talking about this band today. Their very first MV to their song 'Thrill', which also carries an almost dramatic story with it. The ladies somehow managed to convince the decision makers at the time to turn this song instead of another intended one into an MV. And this turned out to be a very smart move for several reasons, because as the ladies found out years later, their label had already decided to drop the project 'Band-Maid' behind their backs. That I can write this here today, we also owe a person who posted the MV on Facebook, which led within a few days to quite a lot of views on their channel, from all over the world. The girls even thought their social accounts had been hacked before they realized the hype was real. So, this song was not only their breakthrough, but also the salvation of the band in general. 🙏🏻
Also, I think that not only for me, but for a lot of us, the MV to 'Thrill' was the beginning of something really special. :)
Damn, I really should learn to write shorter texts. 😇 See you next time.

Yep, since 2017 they have written their music. That includes Sense and Domination.. Early songs like Thrill and Freedom were written for them. And their most recent music, like Sense, is brilliant. The lead guitar, Kanami, is a genius workaholic and composes and arranges the music. The rhythm guitar/second vocal, Kabato -- the leader and soul of the band -- writes the lyrics. The others contribute a lot to developing their own parts. Kanami is encouraging the others to compose songs, especially the bass player, MISA, who has her own strong sense of music and can write riffs that Kanami says would never occur to her. And, of course, drummer, Akane, and lead singer, Saiki, are total monsters at their craft. So, though Kanami and Kabato lead things, their music is a collaboration of equals. You seldom see that in a band.

What I understand about Miku's timeline is this: she grew up in Kumamoto, Japan, and briefly worked at a maid cafe there. She moved to Tokyo and worked at a second maid cafe in Akihabara, a small area in Tokyo, called At Home Cafe where she was known as "Himawari" which means Sunflower. Her maid profile was taken down, but you can still find her maid blog. She won an idol contest and joined a pop trio called Lil Cumin. At some point in all this, she went by Mika Noguchi, but I don't know if that's another stage name - I think it is - or if it's her real name. You can still find Lil Cumin's videos and and a handful of live performances, some of which show the three young ladies wearing maid outfits. After about a year, Lil Cumin broke up (they weren't catching on, and it's not hard to see why). Miku went to a management company called Platinum Passport and said she wanted a rock band with the maid image. Management gave her the green light, so she went on RUclips and found Kanami. Kanami asked her friend Akane to join BAND-MAID and play drums, and Akane brought in MISA on bass. Mika changed her stage name to Miku Kobato somewhere in there, and they auditioned Saiki after realizing that Miku's voice didn't have the power for a rock band. It was decided that Miku would play rhythm guitar, so Kanami started teaching her. The rest is pretty straightforward. BAND-MAID didn't catch on until their video for "Thrill" went viral, and they finally gained control of their own writing once they proved themselves with "Alone."

You can imagine how the audience went nuts when stage was lit up and we saw the girls moving. 😍 However, audience was not allowed to shout due to precautions against COVID, so we swallowed our voices. What we could do was pumping our arms vigorously to commands by Saiki and Miku. The pumping was required almost one hour and a half in total. (Two ballads and MC breaks gave us some rest, phew 😅). Then after the 2-hour-long show, I had a happy sore shoulder in the morning after 🤣

Music video's: (simply because we don't have top quality live video's as of yet), "Dice", "Blooming", "Warning", '"Manners"... and probably the 20 or 30 others that commenters will be suggesting.. Live video's: (because they are great live), "Play", "Freedom", "Real Existence", "OnSet"(instrumental)... That will get you started... and when you want to here something really amazing. They did an online acoustic set show for Christmas 2021. They rearranged several songs for an acoustic setting.. They are putting them out one at a time on their site.. Currently, it is "Soyanakidori" they have already taken down "Catharsis", the link to that is not working anymore.

The lyrics are referencing the story of the anime, and manga, "Platinum End", the creators Ohba and Obata's latest project - they are most famous for "Death Note". So some of the lyrics only make sense within the story, and the song was specifically written for the anime. But it is an uptick for Band-Maid to be asked to contribute to the work of creators of that calibre.
Kobato has been on TV in Japan talking about the story from the perspective of the concept of "life and death"- and yes she did so in full Maid rig, while claiming to be a pigeon, and to be 810 years old. It is a bit special, might take some getting used to - "swallow it slowly" as Saiki might put it.

  • @outwest1014

Miku Kobato before founding Band Maid worked in a Maid Cafe. This was after she was in a J-pop group that broke up after a couple of MV's. She went to her agency and pitched the idea of a Band dressed as Maids playing "cool" music AKA Rock.
Yes they write and produce all of their music having complete control. Kanami (lead guitar) is the composer. She creates the basic melody ,sending (internet) to MISA (bass) and Akane (drums) for their fills. Akane, of course is given the speed (BPM) of the song. Then the song goes to Miku for the lyrics. She has written all the lyrics except 1 that Saiki (lead vocals) wrote. But Miku and Saiki do work closely o the final lyrics. No use having lyrics your singer can't sing. Then into the studio for final engineering and production.
The wearing of the Maid costumes while playing Hard Rock is called "the Gap" in Japan. Meaning the difference in what you are seeing Demure Maids vs What you are hearing Hard Rock.

This song was composed for the TV anime "Platinum End" by them. Miku (band founder/rhythm guitar/red rose) wrote the lyrics to reflect the story of the anime.

This is a song for Platinum End, an anime, HOWEVER, most of their songs are uplifting lyrically. Pretty much every song will be your next favorite Band Maid song. They can play any genre although they do perform hard rock most often. Watch NO GOD live from their online show. It makes this seem tame. Enjoy the ride, it's great. Best rock band on the planet.

Sebs my friend you have been turned on to the best over all rock band on the planet. They play it all and they play it like they were born to play it. I have found a few bands in the past where I could listen to a particular album front to back but this is the first band that I can truthfully say I would listen to their entire damn catalog front to back. They just don’t seem to write bad songs, or even mediocre ones. Enjoy!
Their OMVs are good but their Official Live Videos are always better.

So this song was written for the anime Platinum End. The video is full of imagery from the show. The feathers, the "arrows", the shafts of light. The premise of the show is that there are people chosen by Angels and their goal is to become the next God. Each Angel has the ability to give their person a power. Some Angels are stronger and can give multiple powers. The White "arrow" can kill people, the red "arrow" can make someone fall completely in love with you and do what ever you want them too. And then some have wings to fly. It's an interesting show with a lot of thought provoking tid-bits towards the end. There is a scene in the video where it shows Miku holding like a diamond type of thing, those are the arrows that I am referencing. It's really a brilliant video.

I guess maybe if Miku hadn't worked in a maid cafe the idea for the motiff might not have occured to her so I guess you can say that did bring it about?
But the actual reasoning was A) its a very eyecatching and memorable look to make them stand out B) To show that cute girls can also rock out hard- to emphesize the difference between their sound and what they look like.

With your journey into the world of J-metal and J-rock, and especially with the reactions you've done to Babymetal, Nemophila and now Band-Maid, it kind of surprises me that you don't appear to have encountered Lovebites yet (unless you've reacted to them, and I just missed it). Many Western listeners consider the trifecta of Japanese female bands to be Lovebites, Nemophila and Band-Maid (Babymetal isn't usually named in that trifecta because the musicians are male, though a lot of fans of all three of those bands are also Babymetal fans). So if you're enjoying Nemophila and Band-Maid, you should definitely dive into Lovebites, as well! There are plenty of others, too, besides just the "holy trinity" - Aldious, Fate Gear, Bridear, Gaccharic Spin, Doll$boxx, Asterism (instrumental only), Hanabie, Hagane, etc. Aldious may be of particular interest because they have a connection to American musical royalty, as their drummer Marina Bozzio is the step-daughter of the legendary Terry Bozzio, drummer for Missing Persons and Frank Zappa.

Debs, an explanation about Band Maids costumes. Miku used to work as an entertainer in a cosplay Maid Cafe in Tokyo. She had been a singer in a female Japanese pop group, but came up with an idea of females dressed as maids playing hard rock. She held an internet audition for a female guitar player. Kanami Soto auditioned and became the lead guitarist for the group. Miku asked Kanami if she knew any drummers or bassists. Kanami suggested Akane Hirosi as the drummer and Misa as bassist. They knew each other from the Tokyo School of Music and had played together as backups on some J-Pop artists. Miku contacted all of them and told them the concept of playing hard rock in maid costumes. (Picture Kiss) Miku realized she did not have the powerful voice needed for hard rock, and auditioned singers. Saiki Atsumi auditioned and was awarded the role. Talk a serendipitous happening, where five very talented young women formed such a very powerful, all female rock group. They were about to breakup because they could not get a hit. Then a J-Rock radio station in London played "Thrill" and got 2 million hits in two weeks and the rest is history. The measure of a great rock group is not only the ability to play live in front of a large audience and get them engaged in your music, but to an acoustic set, showing their true musical skills. Band Maid has done both with great acclaim.

    • @fastskipper777

Where are you getting all these wrong info. Miku did not hold audition. She found Kanami's uploaded videos online on the Japanese only music site Audioleaf. She asked her to meet her. Kanami's name is Kanami Tono. (Not Soto). Akane' name is Akane Hirose (not Hirosi). You need to get the names correct, it's like calling John Lennon as John Linnon. Do you have any idea how wrong that is with Japanese names? One wrong syllable could mean totally wrong meaning. It's not like the Western names are phonetic but Japanese names are often times written in Chinese characters and each character has a unique meaning to it. And they sound different. Please learn a bit more before sounding off wrong things.
