It still saddens me. He wasn't even 56 when he died. I still listen to his music once in a while. I have both CDs from the Addictions collection, which has a lot of his greatest songs. Interestingly, he hated naming CDs "The best of..." He would put what he felt fans would love the most and just named it "Addictions."

He looked ill in his last interview which I think was on a local Yorkshire television channel. There is a spooky symmetry to that given he was from the area and the fact that the video to You Blew Me Away was filmed in a hotel room- he died in a hotel in Paris. I may be reading too much into it but so many things seem to be connected if, like me, you do not believe in co-incidence. Above all, he left a great legacy of music and was a truly talented artist who took his music seriously from what I have read. Are We Still Rolling? by Phil Browne who worked with him and others, notably Murray Head and Talk Talk, is very praiseworthy of Robert Palmer.

Robert Palmer's sleevenotes from the 1989 compilation "Addictions vol. 1" - "I was working with Moon Martin when I wrote Some Guys. I played it to him and then a few days later he came in and said he;d just heard someone singing it in the studio across the road, which seemed impossible since I hadn't finished it yet myself! What happened was that I must have heard it subliminally, I think it was on Australian radio, and just hadn't realised. A further coincidence was that Jack Nuber, who mixed the song, had produced it for an 18-year-old Jamaican kid called Junior Tucker. In the end the only thing I rememberer was the title line. The rest is very different from the many versions that were subsequently recorded." Incidentally, the writing credit goes to J.Fortang.

Some guys have all the luck
Some guys have all the fun
Some guys have all the luck, all the luck
What you gonna do when your luck begins to run
Such a lucky dog it's good luck - push it
I get turned on by everything you do to me
Don't say you shouldn't do that
Push your hard luck hard push it
Oh, to take a kiss from lady luck tonight
Oh yeah I want to so much
Ooh the way it feels when you find out there's a pearl in it
Girl the way it feels when you get it
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the fun
I get to hear you talk, see you walk
Ooh take me in your arms and let your luck begin to run
    I touch you - alright
I thought my luck had held until you fingered me
We make a right impression when you hold me tight
Wait for a break, my lucky charm
Things are looking up alright - alright
Oh - to taste the lips of lady luck tonight
Oh yeah - I want to - so much
Ooh the way it feels when you find out there's a pearl in it
Girl the way you squeal when you get it
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the breaks
I get to roll my dice - ain't it nice
Ooh take me in your kitchen and we'll play for higher stakes
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the fun

It's not technically a cover. He thought he'd written an original song, but the title is sung in the same way as the song of the same name by The Persuaders, which Palmer must have heard but had no memory of. It was spotted just before release and marketed as a cover, but apart from the start of the chorus it's an entirely different song

Rod Stewart made this song have some sense about it.
It would have been a ABSOLUTELY TRAVERSTY and LUDICROUS to let such a great sound have just this version.
Rod put some tasty meat and bone lyrics to the original music.
    I like Robert's version.
    However I LOVE Rod's version.
I will ALWAYS remember Robert's incredible generosity in giving a BRILLIANT, FANTASTIC and OUTSTANDING song to Rod Stewart which of course could have been a MASSIVE hit record for himself.
It was written by Climmie Fisher(who also wrote the CLASSIC 80's song "Love Changes Everything") and Robert adviced Rod to record it .
So Rod did and gave a grateful thank you note on the sleeve of the album it was recorded on to Robert.
The Rod Stewart album is called "Out Of Order" and the track is called " When The One You Love(Is In Love With Someone Else.)
And the song really is SOMETHING ELSE.
BTW In my own humble opinion Robert Palmer's two best songs are "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and "Change His Ways."
