- Kiwis are flightless birds native to New Zealand with the size of a domestic chicken. Apteryx lay the largest egg in relation to his body size of any species of bird in the world; there are five recognised species. DNA sequence comparisons have yielded the surprising conclusion that kiwi are much more closely related to the extinct Malagasy elephant birds than to the Moa.

This is an Egg Extraction by Department of Conservation staff... as employees they are generally not allowed into the bush at night for Health and Safety reasons as it is too dangerous (due to terrain). Therefore they have to disturb the birds by reaching into the burrow when they are 'sitting' during the day. Volunteer staff are not so restricted, and go into the bush, staying overnight, to carry out Egg Extraction. By monitoring the movement of the male (in the Reserve I volunteer in, as in most Reserves, all our birds have radio transmitters on their legs) and listening for the female calling him we know when he is 'off the nest' to feed at night, and go in during that time slot. This way the bird is not disturbed (other than by getting back to an empty nest).
Would this happen to spur the couple to mate again sooner, since their nest "failed"?

@@BirdsNation That's fair enough, survival of the fittest. Just don't complain when we pull out hunting rifles and start firing. Anyhow, I live up in Northern Quebec. Sometimes I end up having to shoot animals to survive. Just because you think it, not everyone has the luxury of getting food at a store. Some people have to hunt sometimes.

The closest thing to a kiwi I can think of is a Dodo. Not gonna lie a Kiwi seems much cuter though 🤭 I'd love one as a pet, I understand I can't, but a girl can dream 💞🎀

I do wish it was easier to get them as pets... Yes, You would hear some horror stories about neglectful owners... But trust me! There are a lot of caring and crazy people in the word that would treat them right and encourage breeding! Get a multi-generation adaptation to human interaction occur, And now there would be a big population of captive bread Kiwi's that would be more fun to own and info and supplies would become much more common! :D
