Old Man Parker is one of the greatest fictional portrayals of a father. McGavin treads such a fine line between the grumpy disciplinarian who talks a big game but never quite acts on it, and a loving father who retains a childlike aspect or two.

I remember the Puyallup fair growing up in Washington state. I still remember the (1980?) TV commercial jingle... Let's see......
"Saw a duck and a chicken down on the farm kickin' up the hay and raisin' up a storm that I asked the farmer what they were up to and he said PUYALLUP, THAT'S WHAT THEY DO! You can do it at a trot you can do it at a gallop you can do it at a walk so you heart don't do palpitate. Just don't be late. Just do the Puyallup." 😉

The story is cult. Why does this actor's material go classic? Because he's a good actor. He handled this silly interview marvelously well. Eaglegards...

I'd feel worse about his fate if he didn't escape any and all consequences from triple dog daring Flick into licking a light pole in winter. It doesn't even matter if his obstinacy in matters of pure physics was willful or otherwise.

I said IF...you know if say they were to make a Broadway Musical of it (as nauseating as that sounds)..or IF..they did a Movie or TV remake of it (which sounds even more nauseating)...and since Darren McGavin is deceased...well who would YOU!!..think might take his place??:-)

Enjoyed this because I like Darren McGavin, but the actor drops his voice and the sound editor doesn't correspond by increasing the recording level so we HEAR what he's telling about his Christmas memories at the very beginning. Frustrating!
Right off the bat, Bobbie embarrasses herself when she states they met years prior for 'something . . . on NBC.' Ed. - the journalist can't check her notes so we and Darren don't have this 'dead air?' A pro WOULD have; or if not, then don't bring it up. Darren tries to come to her assist -- her rescue actually -- and suggests "The Outsider" ('68 - 69 series). . . then "Law & Order" ('76 TV movie). And she STILL doesn't know / remember. She doesn't even 'bite.'
'The Invasion of Kevin Ireland" was such an outstanding, acclaimed episode of "The Bold Ones" 'The Lawyers' with resultant significant influence on the credit reporting racket -- even if Bobbie Wygant hadn't seen it, as an entertainment journalist she'd at least be aware of it -- 'up to speed on it.'
Her question of "Darren, just HOW do you do it all -- stage, television, movies?" comes off as sounding lame; sounds pure 'Jiminy Glick.'. And it's certainly not original or inspired. These movie and television 'junket' interviews test the patience and stamina of the performers. They (usually) hear the SAME questions over and over. And they have to fake smile throughout. A new reporter every 12 - 15 minutes getting 'exclusives' for their local station's audience.
I was in college and missed a number of "The Bold Ones" but I lucked out and saw 'The Invasion of Kevin Ireland' -- the title alone is enough to pique one's interest. And made certain to get the DVD sets.
McGavin's gubelievabilityest shots as outlaw characters on gritty westerns in the '60s -- "Gunsmoke" ('Gunfighter, R.I.P.') and "Cimarron Strip" ('The Legend of Jud Starr') were very effective all because of his commanding presence and his believability in the role; he commanded each scene. This third of his three "Gunsmoke" guest appearances is also a BEAUTIFUL love story opposite France Nuyen.. . . . What a thrill to recently be introduced to his "The Outsider" series, kind of a precursor to James Garner's "The Rockford Files" -- both created / produced by Roy Huggins.
The "Jiminy Glick" put-down / reference, elsewhere in Comments, was not far off the mark.

First of all, so called "Darren McGavin" wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name, William Lyle Richardson. Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Studio or Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?! The ONLY reason a name change should be done, is for a woman when she gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her name, then she doesn't accept the sanctity of marriage.
