i played this in 1995.. i was a wee bit over 10 years old.. it was my first time having a computer and this game blew my mind away. BOOM! so much magic! i became an adventure game fan.. i spent many good hours playing with a close friend and we had exciting telephone calls just to tell each other we'd made some progress with the game! there was no walkthrough or even the internet for us back then.. Sierra was the Disney of computer games for us.. it was magical!
Same here. I was 10, and had to call my friends dad many times to get through clues as he beat the game. The ending was magic, and I beat it several times just to hear the sing at the end. I haven't played it since spring 1995.
Both endings are shown in the playthrough. The main path with the best ending finishes just after 3hr 20min in the playthrough, and the path to the alternative ending is shown after that.
@Anifco67 To go on the alternative ending path, don't go back to the Isle of Mists since the bonfire burns Beauty's clothes. Instead, go back to the castle and put on Beauty's old clothes in the guard post and follow the other servants into the castle.
That green "Sierra" logo at the beginning.....what a blast from the past. I received this game for Christmas in 1993 when I was 12. I was kind of bummed since I was not in to RPG's at all. I ended up playing it a bunch and really liking it. Pretty cool watching this.
I loved this game so much as a kid. I remember when it first came I used to show off that opening sequence to all the friends. No one had seen rendered graphics yet. lol
Ah, memories! I used to play this game with my sister all the time when I was younger! One of the greatest computer games ever made! Tricky as heck, but awesome!
John A. He makes it look easy. The game's fun was from figuring out what to do next. This specific King's quest was considered the best not only because of the story and voice acting, but also its challenge.
My mom and I played this together when I was a kid, and we got it down to a science of beating it in single sit-downs. The only thing of course is that we had made a map of the entire minotaur lair the first playthrough... sooo we did have a cheat-sheet. Them's were the days. I'd play through again just to play 'Dem Bones!
Had this game as a kid and loved it. Never could beat it as I got it second hand and it lacked the manual needed to solve the riddle of the cliffs of logic. I come back about once a year to watch your playthrough just for nostalgic purposes. Thank you for making it, and for actually recording the story as opposed to skipping it! One humorous thing I noticed this playthrough though: At 2:30:39 when you first have Singsing deliver a message to Cassima, due to the fact you waited till later on in the game to do so, Shameer Shamazzle is still present watching as a snake in the tree despite the fact that you previously tricked him into believing you're dead and being ordered to stop following you around. Just a funny little continuity error the devs seemed to miss.
You can also have Shamir show up as the weasel on the Isle of the Beast even after pretending to die ... just an oversight, like you said. I think it's still an awesome game and one of my all-time favorites. :)
Friend of mine had this game on his PC back in the 90's. We got stuck at the area with the boiling spring. How in THE HELL were we supposed know to take the ice cabbage which (from my memory anyway) is on another island entirely and then hurry back to the spring (because y'know ice melts pretty quick) and THROW IT INTO THE SPRING?! Like that makes any sense LOOOL Anyway the voice acting in this game blew me the f*** away as soon as Alexander gets to that store on the first island and the story clerk starts talking to him. Just so good. I'll remember certain characters forever I think. :) The other part that stumped us for a good while was getting that sailor in the boat to give us the map to the other islands. I forget how we did that but I guess I'll find out soon enough watching this video.
agreed on the voice acting. I usually played these games in text mode because the voice acting was so painful to listen to... especially police Quest 4
Just click on everything and take anything you can, then look at every single thing in your inventory when you're trying to solve a part of the game for something that maybe... might... could... make sense to use.
I loved this game. I had a PC without a CD ROM back in the early 90's. When I was about 14, I got a CD ROM that came with a collection of Serra software for Christmas. After I had to install the CD ROM and sound card myself, I got to play this as my reward. I still have the hint book put up somewhere
I remember misplacing the instruction booklet for this game and pulling my hair out when I got to the Cliffs of Logic. You absolutely need the booklet to solve the puzzle. And this was before internet so there were no GameFAQs for help; just a 1-900 help line for a couple dollars a minute hahaha. Anyway, I did end up finding the booklet and made it all the way to the Catacombs, only to find out I was missing the Hole in the Wall!! So my whole save file was bricked, trapped with a minotaur for all eternity.
If you don't have all the required items for the Catacombs, the Winged Ones will give you one chance to leave and go acquire them. Of course, you had no way of knowing what items were required 🙄 😅
Back in 1995, I use to watch my older foster brother play KQ religiously. For me, it was an escape into an enchanted world filled with adventure and magic. This game was so captivating for us kids. We would all gather around the PC and watch the magic unfold on that old Dell computer. I can still hear the noise it generated. Hats off to Sierra for this timeless classic.
I LOVE THIS GAME! IT IS MY CHILDHOOD! I GOT IT FOR MY BIRTHDAY AND IT WAS THE MOST AMAZING ADVENTURE I EVER BEEN ON! never will a game hold a vibe like this one
I couldn't find any info on it, but I'm certain that Benson also voiced the main character of Lunacy on the Dreamcast, Fred the Wandering Traveler. The tone of voice he uses with Alexander is exactly the same as with Fred, but I can't find a single source to confirm it.
This game was beyond hard, it probably didn't help that it was littered with an abundance of "instant death" situations, and it was released during a time when you couldn't just Google the solution.
In the text version Cassima i s abit more deadpan about the alternate route. She just says "Too bad my parents are still dead...and you had to kill the genie...and the islands are still at war..." and Alexander just answers "Yeah, I know."
2:23:30 the king and queen never seemed enthusiastic about being brought back from the dead?! Lol! I mean, you think they woulda sounded more enthusiastic and grateful for being resurrected...which has never happened to anyone else in history! Lol
I am so confused. So, you decided to give Alexander’s ring to sing-sing later in the game which means you got the ribbon at 2:31:50 ... yet you were somehow able to get hair to use for the Charm A Creature Of The Night spell earlier in the game? I was letting this video play in the background so I didn’t get the details of how you got the hair. I guess I will rewatch. Edit: at 1:57:36 , a hair comes from Beauty’s clothes. I didn’t know there were two ways to get the hair ingredient.
I remember watching this introduction (the seagulls were additional) when it was released on CD and thought, wow, those are amazing graphics. Scary to think that now. You forget how far it's all come.
I was in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade when I played this. I learned so many words and a lot of new things while playing this game. :) Looking back, I remember it quite vividly... learning and hearing some of these words, expressions, and other things for the first time.
1:53:10 The three OST songs for the Beauty and Beauty storyline alone are underrated, especially when heard back to back. One of those examples of how the same notes song will communicate a wide range of emotions depending on the instruments and the key.
I remember playing this 25 years ago and being amazed at how great the graphics were. It was nice to see someone has uploaded game play of KK6 this brings back so many memories.
What a great story, honestly this whole game is probably the best fairy tale I've heard ever. I know its not a true fairy tale but it sure feels like one
It's games like this requiring so many floppy disks to install that the CD-ROM was starting to be accepted by the mainstream. The reason the 7th Guest and Myst were released only on CD-ROM is they would require far too many floppies to install and would be a major inconvenience.
Something interesting I noticed. The snake in the tree with the nightingale has a shiny eye, like the genie, and all the people he pretended to be to attempt to lure Alexander to his death, so it can be assumed that the snake is also the genie in disguise. However, in this playthrough, you send the gifts to Cassima after faking your death (in both versions) so wouldn't it be illogical for the snake to be there? I suppose that they didn't consider you might make that progress afterward...
Yeah I found that when I played as well. Prehaps the only continuity error there was. Hard to thing of everything all the time. I was a little frustrated that after drinking the potion and then sending things to Cassima, via her nightingale, after that that the snake with the flashing eye turned up.
I played this game as a kid so many times when my now late mother would be in the hospital. It passed the time, and I loved the puzzles sprinkled throughout it all. Regrettably I never managed to complete it before our computers in the house were upgraded, and the disc lost. It's wonderful to see this posted--thank you so much!
First played this back in 1993 on a Windows 3.1 processor that had a CD-ROM drive. CD-ROM games were fairly new back then, but many of those games from that era of gaming were good. Kings Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow was probably one of the best ones. We've come a long way since then, but every time I look at this game I get nostalgic. Jane Jensen did such a terrific job on this game. All in all, it offered a mixture of adventure and love, something you don't really see anymore.
Sucks when you realize years later that a mother and her child died in Princess Cassima's castle. Dead mom made it to the Land of The Dead but her son was still stuck in the cell they died in.
I like Jallo. He's like a combination of the late Dom Delouise and Snagglepuss. This really is a unique game. The only KQ game that I played was the fifth one, and I got stuck on the beach where the deaf hermit lived :P
I played this game for years and gave up. Then went back like four years later and beat it the second way that you showed. I never actually got the awesome win! That's cool to know that was an option!
For thousands of years I have sat upon this throne. I have heard every sad tale that can be told by human lips. I have seen tragedies that ended empires, injustices that defied reason, love that would let the very stars turn cold and hard, I have seen torments that could not possibly be borne, but must be for centuries.
I remember this game being so badass that the "enhanced" graphics freaked me out as a kid. I had to drop the portrait quality (or whatever the setting was called) down in order to play it at my uncle's house without getting totally unnerved.
To be fair I never liked those new portraits. The have higher resolution but worse colors, and some of them feel extremely out of place, like the servant girl and Jollo.
I still have this game on disk and the booklet to go with it. This was actually the second rpg game I ever played, the curse of monkey island was my first. Great games of growing up ☺️
Nice game. I never played any other King's Quest game other than V. As much as I was into it, there were too many instances where I was completely unable to go any further cause of some very specific actions I had to take. That strategy guide (with the spoilers that were annoyingly covered in red) saved my ass though. There's no way I had a chance in that game without it. Ugh... that desert... Oh and... Cedric... enough said. >.>
Given the size of the ears on guardian of the Isle of Wonder, you'd think he would have heard Alexander wind up the nightingale and know it wasn't a real one.
How did Alexander's parents get to the Land of the Green Isles safely without the Ferryman in one week when it took Alex 3 months? I guess they really wanted to see the wedding...
cassima's parents are still trapped in limbo if alexander doesn't come to their rescue, and none of alexander's family is present at the wedding either. cassima never learns what actually happened to her parents, so there's no closure. overall it's a huge chunk of the storyline that's completely missing there and to me personally it feels just... wrong. cassima deserves better than that.
Playing this again as an adult I now find it weird that Alexander fell in love with a girl he barely spoke to in the 5th game. But since they (at least in the new continuity) ended up having Gwendolyn, it's cool, because Gwendolyn is funny.
so intresting game and imagine it was released 1993 and it had os good graphics!! tho the problem is now 2015 they have graphic games nad first person shooter games are most popular ... =(
Played this game as a kid and never got very far, yet it was so memorable. I'm pretty amazed to find this playthrough on RUclips. Although I have no plans of replaying the game, watching this brings me great joy and nostalgia. I knew this was a special game
Thanks for sharing this. I used to play this game day in and day out. But could never get through even a quarter of the way. I lost the CD when I moved out of house. Good to know the full story is here. Thanks.
I guess KQ1 was the first adventure game me and my older brother played on a computer. Now, some 25 years later I chronologically watched all longplays on RUclips and must say, that it was a great pleasure to see the whole yourney of Alexander. Sierra and Roberta Williams will probably stay in my mind for the rest of my life ;_)
When I was a kid my parents purchased this game for me (CD Version). I would play the game and get stuck on the Island with the trolls and die all the time, also my computer would freeze during that scene. It wasn't until we got the internet (around 1997) and a faster computer, that I decided to try again. Went online and found a walkthrough and was so pleased to finally finish the game!! Now I have played it I don't know how many times! Fun Fact: The guy who does the voice for Alexander is the same guy who voices "BEAST" in the cartoon Beauty and the Beast :D
One little oversight - and probably the only one. They should have programmed the game so that the nightgale stopped appearing in the tree after Alexander drank the potion. They would have expected people to give the items to Cassima, via the nightingale, before Alexander 'brought back' Cassima's parents. I'm frustrated by that little error but it's hard to think of everything all the time.
It's interesting to see how the games evolved just in terms of playtime, to say nothing of graphics and sound. King's Quest I-III could all be completed in under an hour if you know exactly what to do. King's Quest IV is just about an hour, and V is a little under an hour and a half. And then you hit King's Quest VI and you're up to THREE hours of time to complete the game. It's fascinating to see just how the complexity of these games evolved in less than 10 years.
So the land of the Green Isles seems to have a very low population. Only five islands, and the capital only has one small village, the isle of the beast seems to only have the beast’s castle, which might have servants, but probably not, the winged ones have a city, at least, and the druids seem to have a village that only consists of old men. Seriously, is there a huge civilization in Chessland or something?

Yes!!! Me too. The memory will life forever!
Was it on a compaq.
you have lived! :) my walkthrough was phone calls to my cousin!
The Death's challenge scene is one of the greatest moment in all fantasy fiction.
+camilobedex The entire underworld sequence is remarkable.
I'll say.
The taming of "Nightmare" has some of the best, most appropriate music I've ever heard in my life. What a GORGEOUS theme. ✨✨✨
🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
Totally agree! The narration is so well written that I have even sampled in a techno track of mine: ruclips.net/video/waOoB7e6XIo/видео.html
Alexander feels a strange pulling sensation.

@Anifco67 To go on the alternative ending path, don't go back to the Isle of Mists since the bonfire burns Beauty's clothes. Instead, go back to the castle and put on Beauty's old clothes in the guard post and follow the other servants into the castle.

I have to admit the part where you had to make death cry is in my opinion one of the most heart-wrenching moments in video game history.
this game was so well written
I loved this game so much as a kid. I remember when it first came I used to show off that opening sequence to all the friends. No one had seen rendered graphics yet. lol
While the 3d textures don't hold up well these days I'll always love the hand drawn sprite animations. They almost feel and look alive
Roberta Williams was the digital Shakespeare of faerie-tales and
sci-fi/fantasy for PC gaming. And I mean that- on levels!
Ah, memories! I used to play this game with my sister all the time when I was younger! One of the greatest computer games ever made! Tricky as heck, but awesome!
Man watching this playthrough makes me feel dumb hahaah...I played as a kid and found this soooo difficult :D
+John Andelfinger Not only you. Even now it's hard for me =(
Well if its any consolation, there was bugs in the game that made it unfinishable.
Heh. I had to backtrack at least three times to get the necessary items to get through the catacombs.
Had this game as a kid and loved it. Never could beat it as I got it second hand and it lacked the manual needed to solve the riddle of the cliffs of logic. One of my favourite games of all time! I used to play it a lot when I was a kid. It was 1995! Pure nostalgia!
I spent so much time as a kid playing these games with my uncle. I absolutely love the Kings quest series.
Me and my uncle played different games...
My sisters and I used to play this all the time when we were kids. Ahh...... the 1990's were good times, good times.
Best narrator is gaming history.
Gi Nattak oh one of the best... but the narrator from Willy Beamish's Adventure was hilarious. A close second if not equal.
Sadly, they then got rid of a narrator for the 7th instalment. I loved them in 5 and 6.
Darkest Dungeon would like to have a word with you
The magic map is a callback to KQ3, Alexander's first adventure
This game makes me feel so nostolgic. It was my first real adventure game and my intro to the King's Quest series. Thank you for posting!
'83 baby here. The first KQ game I played was KQ4. Typing the commands was a challenge, but fun! Loved/and still love V, VI, and VII!
Nice to hear Dave Fennoy pop up as the Pawn Shop owner (24:26) aka Lee from Telltale's Walking Dead games
I still laugh at "yee-gads! Is that cold!" So many memories watching this!
This was the pinnacle of point and click greatness. Played this back in 1993 on a Windows 3.1 computer when CD-ROM drives were brand new.

I like Jallo. He's like a combination of the late Dom Delouise and Snagglepuss. This really is a unique game. The only KQ game that I played was the fifth one, and I got stuck on the beach where the deaf hermit lived :P
I like the voice of Alexander- Robbie Benson, who also was the voice of Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast! And Captain Saladin was Tony Jay!
Robbie Benson also voiced Prince Valiant in The Legend Of Prince Valiant cartoon
Iain Cowell I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers he played that character. Prince Valiant was my hero as a child.
Tony Jay?! The Elder God in Soul Reaver?! I'd also in KQ VI? This man contributed more to my childhood than I ever realized.
I played this game for years and gave up. Then went back like four years later and beat it the second way that you showed. I never actually got the awesome win! That's cool to know that was an option!
The Oracle at 1:32:00 sounds like Yzma from "The Emperor's New Groove"
Played this through several times. Got to ask was I the only one who tried to put the crown cursor on the portraits heads?
Nope I've seen some people do this and I do this to.
Yep! Hahahaha. I put it on Alexander's head, Casimas head, even the guard dogs. But I think the crown goes to the pawn shop keeper.😋
LMAO I did this!!!! I put the crown on everyone's head
1:32:00 When Alexander met Oracle. His face is blue and make him look like Captain Planet or Ice-Man (From X-Men)
For thousands of years I have sat upon this throne. I have heard every sad tale that can be told by human lips. I have seen tragedies that ended empires, injustices that defied reason, love that would let the very stars turn cold and hard, I have seen torments that could not possibly be borne, but must be for centuries.
This thing I have never done: I have never shed a tear. Make me cry, thou man of flesh. That ... is my challenge.
Dude, thank you. I have been looking all over for the fully narrated version.
I still have this game on disk and the booklet to go with it. This was actually the second rpg game I ever played, the curse of monkey island was my first. Great games of growing up ☺️
My all-time favorite PC game. Thanks for the play through. Makes my younger self happy.
Played this long long ago. We had a crap PC, so I never heard the audio. So awesome to hear Tony Jay's voice on this. May he rest in peace.
I guess they really wanted to see the wedding...
joepass87 short answer: Magic.
The sierra logo is enough to take me back and it’s 😢❤
I beat this game so many times as a kid I knew this game inside and out all by heart lol
My dad upgraded the RAM in his pc so I could play this. Thanks dad.
Alexander of Daventry for President !!!!!!!
the second ending is so so so much darker and sadder :'(
why i dont get it
cassima's parents are still trapped in limbo if alexander doesn't come to their rescue, and none of alexander's family is present at the wedding either. cassima never learns what actually happened to her parents, so there's no closure. overall it's a huge chunk of the storyline that's completely missing there and to me personally it feels just... wrong. cassima deserves better than that.
Playing this again as an adult I now find it weird that Alexander fell in love with a girl he barely spoke to in the 5th game. But since they (at least in the new continuity) ended up having Gwendolyn, it's cool, because Gwendolyn is funny.
2:05:37 The manual and wiki describe the Isle of the Dead being "beyond the edge of the world". It would have been cool if the animation showed this.
Such a blessing to have this in childhood . The PC gaming was way ahead of its time
I love this so, so much. Thank you for letting me enjoy this game once again.
This game has a very well written story and character!
so intresting game and imagine it was released 1993 and it had os good graphics!! tho the problem is now 2015 they have graphic games nad first person shooter games are most popular ... =(
This game and King's Quest 3 are my favorites in the series.
One of the best games I played in my childhood. Took me nearly 6 months to get through....
Played this game as a kid and never got very far, yet it was so memorable. I'm pretty amazed to find this playthrough on RUclips. Although I have no plans of replaying the game, watching this brings me great joy and nostalgia. I knew this was a special game
Never managed to complete this as a kid. Massive e-props to this video!
Same here... it was amazing to play.. and so frustrating!
Thanks for sharing this. I used to play this game day in and day out. But could never get through even a quarter of the way. I lost the CD when I moved out of house. Good to know the full story is here. Thanks.
Easily the best King's Quest games. Also some pretty good voice acting for the time.
I will never forget this game
Mine always froze in that same spot too!
Genie sees Alexander "poison" himself and reports on his death.
Genie sees Alexander give his ring to the nightingale.
Hmmm...
You can give ring to Sing-Sing way before that false death
scene.
As a kid this game both fascinated and scared me 😱
Thanks for uploading this game brings back memories
I love this game, it's one of my favorite games of all time
LMAO l love the rotten tomato is SO cool. he is funny!
Everywhere in the world of King's Quest seems tiny in general for some reason. Sierra's other series...es don't seem to have that issue.
