  • Well guys I start the week off with a horrible job that you may want to see being done. Also, we get a supposed engine rebuild in that’s just blown up after 500 miles, this company should be taken to court over this!

    As a lifetime engineer, buy some Cobalt Drills and end mills. Drill a piece of 12 mill bar to braze a eight mil end mill in to true the hole up first. Use Rocol cutting grease not WD40, which is not a cutting oil. Just trying to help!

      Or just buy a spark eroder and save all that hassle - will also remove broken drills & taps.

      dont think Lee is using wd40 its more like worth broaching oil.

      Yes the end mill braised to a length of drill rod is the best solution and use tapping fluid not oil!

    What I have is a long centre drill, about 6" long ... and I turned up a few sleeves, 6mm hole in the middle, various diameters I can drop into holes to act as guides ...

      Snap-on tool makes a kit of drill bit centering sleeves. I found them to work great for broken bolts deep in. Bobcat had issues with broken bolts for engine to pump brackets. Horizontal & very hard to center for drilling.

    Hi both, i'm a retired toolmaker, now 71 about the same age as 'Uncle John', and I still flinch hearing that horrible noise when drilling something really tough. You do a great job and I enjoy your machining videos, as well as the rest of course, I laugh when you mention 'Heath Robinson' methods to Isaac. Don't worry Isaac if you don't know who he was as help is on its way😆🤔. Best wishes, Bob M, South Wales

    There’s all sorts out there, and they give the good folk a bad name.
    I’d done the last service on my parents van, but the next time they needed it done I was away. They went to a “reputable” shop to have it serviced, and they convinced them that they needed a new air filter. I’d just installed a brand new K&N the last time. When I got home, I went back to the shop to find out what happened. Wouldn’t you know it, the shop manager who was decidedly unhelpful, had the same van my parents had. He was quite insulted when I asked him to show me his air filter, and got really pissed and threatened to call the cops.

    Life time engineer, think your process is correct. But buy some rocol cutting compound. Should stop that chattering.

  • @AndyHumphries-cs4rv
    @AndyHumphries-cs4rv Месяц назад +4

    Please, please use Rocol cutting fluid as my fellow engineers are saying, a spray lubricant just won't "cut it" (no pun intended!!).
    I would use an end mill to true up a hole as long as the hole is bigger than the core of the end mill, slot drills are more robust but have less cutting edges, that stud sounds hard rather than "tough" as it should be.

  • @stevefuller1779
    @stevefuller1779 Месяц назад +3

    If you read the decriptions for these van engines, they actually say "re-built" not reconditioned and rebuilt they have been, what they seem to do is dismantle loads of failed engines (plenty about) and select all the "best" bits to build a working engine, buyer beware!

    I am afraid you boys are stuck in the past with drills and end mills. In the 1970s I was acting inspector for a small engineering company in Essex. Yes they used a drill on a very hard casting. Even with a centre drill the holes were out of position. Ironically they possessed a machine that could have machined the holes in the correct position. They couldn’t believe when I showed them how it could be done and that was to use their spark eroding machine with suitable electrodes. Lee hasn’t got one but I would have sub-contracted that job and changed the customer.

    My mate just got his 71reg Custom with 28k back from dealer after a new engine , he was half way home ( 50 miles) and discovered air con wasn't working. Oh our machine wasnt working. That was after discovering they had knocked the front valance / skirt off . He didnt however notice they had also damaged the wing and painted it and said nothing. They never got him a replacement 5 seat courtesy vehicle but said they would make him a payment in recompense, it looks like its 25 quid a day !!
    He now has a Ford case officer on the job so we will see what happens.
    Ps he has a new one on order for next month. At the moment

      A neighbour wanted me to drill out a few broken screws so I asked him to get me some left hand drills and told him why, he called a local engineering company to find out if they sold them, the guy thought he was taking the piss but understood when it was explained to him so he learned something that day but they didn't sell them but suggested another local company that might. When my neighbour contacted them they did stock a limited range for drilling out common thread sizes and when used half the screws backed out but the rest had to be drilled through as they were loctited in, a thread insert was then installed.

    Some tips from an engineer . . . lube that damn drill up, use anything BUT wd40!! even used engine oil would have been better. flood the cutting edges if possible. Chisel point drills don't give you a good centre, the 5.5mm drill will have definitely wandered when it hit the flat point left by 12mm drill bit. you want to use cobalt split point drill bits . . . And run a stone down the sharp edge of the flute of the 12mm drill to take the edge off if you're going to use it as a pilot down a bore Otherwise its less than a five minute job to make up a a nice fitting guide bushor they can be bought for a couple quid . loving your work. peace
