The double fake-out with the helmet is clever. Armour works best when it leaves room between metal and body to absorb blows. When you kill Smough first, Ornstein absorbs his power, but during the cutscene, he remains the same size, but its actually the room that gets shrunk. 4. I always found it so haunting that you can see Ornsteins hand twitching before he’s crushed by Smough, he was still alive and Smough delivered the final blow
Somewhat reminiscent of the frog-mouth helms we see the Ruin Sentinels wearing as well. That’s probably more due to it being a good visor design than Drangleic being inspired, though.
Smough crushes Ornstein with glee because that isn't actually Ornstein his friend and compatriot. What you fight in DaS 1 is an illusion summoned by Gwyndolin. The real Ornstein left Lordran to find a cure for the Undead curse elsewhere, in Drangleic. The Ornstein you fight I'm DaS2 is the true one.
Yet we can get the actual soul of Ornstein in DS1, hinting he's real. And what about reading in DS3 that he had abandoned his post in search of the Nameless King? It's like the timeline is so convoluted that we see an alternate fate of Ornstein in each game. Or could it be (gasp*), a plothole? No, impossible.
@@gooeyking What you said might be true. Although Dark Souls 2 is very much canon. We get a lot of references to characters and places of DS2 in DS3, clearly showing DS2 was not written out.
@@gooeyking Two things though: first, there's a difference between leaving something open to interpretation, such as what is "The Deep" in DS3. There's a lot that's not spelled out for you. And then there's just direct retcons to major events that happened. It's just unusual for Dark Souls to so directly contradict previous events, which I don't remember it doing any other times. Second: If Dark Souls 2 is not canon then how do we find ourselves in the ruins of Earthen Peak in DS3? How do we find the shield of King Vendrick and the armors of Drang soldiers, warriors who were originally from Drangleic? Creighton returns in DS3, so does Alva and Zullie the Witch is also mentioned. Their lore has also stayed the same from DS2. If DS2 isn't canon you'd think their lore would be rewritten to reflect that. But DS3 does acknowledge events of DS2. Or is DS3 not canon either? XD
The ornsteins we fight in both ds1 and ds2 are almost certainly golems made with pieces of Ornsteins soul that he left behind for that purpose. Ds3 tells us explicitly he left to go find the firstborn

Smough was truly enlightened to the lie of the first flame. He understood his position as executioner, and took advantage of this to bottom feed off his victims. He fed off the table scraps from the ones above him, to gain their souls and become powerful.
Ornstein and Smough was without a doubt the hardest bossfight I’ve ever went against like just the idea of facing them again on normal difficult gives me PTSD flashbacks
I think it’s his item description that also mentions he made himself taller inside the armor by stuffing the boots with the crushed bones of his victims. And not just that, those bones were rendered so by he himself, as he was a cannibal.
I don't know how many years it has been since I've played Dark Souls, but only now do I learn that Smough laughs during the fight, and that apparently Ornstein inherits his laugh after absorbing him. This game just keeps on giving. Truly one of the greatest of all time.

I'm currently farming medals for sunbros so i help other people with these two a lot. its hard to focus on sounds when you are doing it for yourself, but after dozens of fights you start to notice all these small things
Yes you can, quite esily in fact. I was not awere that this wasn't common knowledge
@@namethefifth7315people like you are insufferable
The whole interaction between the two remains me of when Vegeta told nappa “ I have no use for useless fools “
I was expecting you to tell us Smough’s eyes were in his moobs!
I was baited!
"Hey A-hole, my eyes are down here!"

I don’t think he could’ve noticed the finger twitches, especially with how he sees through the slits
He can look down. And see something. Possibly
Even if he could, I don’t think he’d care

That bit at the end was great, really tied the lore and the gameplay mechanics together.
He's also the only one not to abandon his duty.
Smough is not one of the four knights of Gwyn, what you mean with abandon his duty ? Gwyn's knights were Dragon Slayer Ornstein, Artorias the Abysswalker, Lord's Blade Ciaran and Hawkeye Gough. BTW that's not the real Ornstein in the fight.
If you're referencing DS3, you literally run into other Silver Knights still guarding the place in that game.
@@demilung Nothing in this video is about silver knights so if he means that idk wtf he talking about.
@@demilungI think he meant of those who were on this (powerful) level, yes they still sat but as foot soldiers, odds were much higher they were killed (maybe even by other silver knights) for abandoning their post
@@gorytarrafaI mean it could be the real ornstein. Dark Souls 3 isn't a direct continuation of 1. The flow of time is convoluted.
Lowkey always laughed at how Smough crushes Ornstein, but Ornstein puts his hand on Smough like he just lost his bro😂
How is this 'lowkey'? Hur dur LoWkEy
Always new meaningful details. I never noticed that Ornstein's fingers were moving.
Ornstein: „Let me tell you something! Let me tell you something!“
“Vegeta help me”
“I have no use for a saiyan that can’t move”
*dies*
Been playing this game since 2012, never nade the connection that that noise was Smough laughing. That's makes him so much more unsettling.
Ironically, a resurrected Smaugh would be the last one to die fighting to protect Gwyndolin from the armies of Sullivan and Aldrich
Resurrected?
I always found it so haunting that you can see Ornsteins hand twitching before he’s crushed by Smough, he was still alive and Smough delivered the final blow
Smough sounds like a chad strength user to me 🗿

To be fair, not all coworkers are friends
When you look at his helm the way its supposed to be, it actually looks bad ass. I didn't know those were his eyes. Great video
Ohmygod with that little bit of context his helmet just became the coolest and most disturbing piece of armor in the game!
Excellent video ! ! The twitching fingers at the end gave me chills ! !
The slids/visor also look similar in shape the silver and black knight helmets now that I think about it
Somewhat reminiscent of the frog-mouth helms we see the Ruin Sentinels wearing as well. That’s probably more due to it being a good visor design than Drangleic being inspired, though.
That double illusion fucking works! had me going for like 10 years, I always though his eyes were in the neck ones!
Dark souls is goated
Out of every boss from the souls borne series smough will always be my favorite boss
When smough dies: freind let me accept your power to finish the fight: smough when ornstein dies: *forcefully applies pine resin*
That pine resin line made me laugh. Thank you
Almost a decade playing this game. Nev3r noticed smough is laughing
Excuse me, my eyes are down here.
Nope too far, back up a bit… warmer… yup right there
Ornstein: Agh! Im hit! They got me good! Uggh!
Smough: (●__●)
Ornstein: I…..I think this is it for me buddy!
Smough: (●‿●) hee hee hee
Another creepy implication to me is that the laugh sounds like a sample from Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick.
Just got back into this game after taking a year-long break. Finally beat the Fire Giant and now into the Forge of Giants. What a wonderful game.
More like a Doublet illusion ^^
Ornstein " jeeez my back hurt"
Smough " I gotchu bro"
XD
@@gooeyking would love to see proof of this thing you made up lmao
The ornsteins we fight in both ds1 and ds2 are almost certainly golems made with pieces of Ornsteins soul that he left behind for that purpose. Ds3 tells us explicitly he left to go find the firstborn
Reminds me of Kenpachi Zaraki. He's just enthralled & enjoying the fight.
And that's why I kill smough first he has no honor and orntstein dosent deserves this he is a legendary warrior and deserves an honorable death
true but that orstein is not the real one cuz the real one went with gwyn firstborn to cuddle with dragons
@@SkillfulCurve or, you know, time is convoluted and all that

@@hensinks thx
I mean Giants are an oppresed race in dark souls and he was probably denied education and a good life and the only thing he knkws is voilence but that doesnt really esxuce him from his deeds
I always did wonder what that sound was, no clue in the past yrs of me playing would I have known that was smough laughing 😂
Smoughs laugh is just part of the track now
I once listened to the OST and was so ready for the laughs that I wondered where they were until I then finally realised that they are not part of the OST
The whole bulbous part of the head and the face being all one helm is a pretty cool design, never noticed it before
Smaug is a mighty dragon, even Sauron seems to respect him
I like to believe the only reason he crushes Ornstein so suddenly and laughs is because he knows hes gonna get the huge power up, so hes basically laughing and saying "you killed my buddy... but now your dead"
is it only me that the last line "hes is a gruesome man" made me laugh
One of the most iconic boss fights of all time, featuring two of the most unique armor sets of all time.
Of course he’s gleeful and laughing, every execution means he gets to eat
Smough was truly enlightened to the lie of the first flame. He understood his position as executioner, and took advantage of this to bottom feed off his victims. He fed off the table scraps from the ones above him, to gain their souls and become powerful.
This is why I always kill Smough first
This guy is the Majin Buu of dark souls
pretty W video ngl
You know, I never really thought about how awesome of a design Smough's helmet is.
Booba
You gave me PTSD vietnam flashbacks from OST alone
Ornstein: *a mournful cutscencd for smough to be large*
Smough: *Mercilessly crush Ornstein to absorbed lighting*
Ornstein and Smough was without a doubt the hardest bossfight I’ve ever went against like just the idea of facing them again on normal difficult gives me PTSD flashbacks
I'm always so in the zone I never noticed the laugh.. that's wild
These guys were one of the most memorable fights for me on ds1
Literally getting no hit runned to death
Smough *eerily gleeful laughs*
What a great short! Well done!
Back when we thought this fight was hard... ahhh old times
The two slits and double illusion look insane bro!
I think it’s his item description that also mentions he made himself taller inside the armor by stuffing the boots with the crushed bones of his victims. And not just that, those bones were rendered so by he himself, as he was a cannibal.
I like how Bonelab has character/avatars based on both of them
Ornstein: Smough, my friend, hel-
Smough: BEEN WAITING FOR THIS A LONG TIME!!
I didn’t even realise he laughs 😮
And somehow, one of the most intimidating enemies in the game is actually more horrifying than I ever realized.
I like Orenstein's phase 2 cut scene more. He lays his hand on his fallen comrade to briefly mourn him before absorbing his power.
I don't know how many years it has been since I've played Dark Souls, but only now do I learn that Smough laughs during the fight, and that apparently Ornstein inherits his laugh after absorbing him. This game just keeps on giving. Truly one of the greatest of all time.
It gets even worse when you realize that he a cannibal
I love smough as a character, a rejected knight of gwyn still devoted to furfill his purpose even after aldrich appears, truly an honorable knight even if a cannibal executioner
One must imagine Smough happy
One thing to consider is that he did notice the twitching fingers and robbed the kill to be able to absorble his friends power before the player does
He kills Ornstein because he's an executioner, that's it.
If somebody dies in his boss room he should be the one to do them in, it's his job.
Somehow I've never seen them as friends, kind of always saw them as rivals trying to best each other and when one falls they are eager to finish them off.
Only sounds I heard in this fight were mine curses to this beautiful game
