Been listening to the Clash since 1978 but never heard this before.
Same here. It is OK but Small Faces and the original are the best with Spencer Davis Group doing a great job as well.
It was a demo that only came out in 1994
The only big band who saw the bullshit and said, 'We're out.' Roger Waters saw it too, but he was earlier, in the days you could still get record deals and publicity that counted. Whenever you get above the crowd you are given two choices: are you in, or are you out. And by in, they mean your soul, literarily. The Clash never lost their soul. Their connection with spirit. With the unknown. They got it :) My favourite band since I was 13, and they never let me down.

Been listening to The Clash for over 15 years, but I just listened to this song for the first time. Even though they always tried many different styles I was surprised with this, they almost sound like an entirely different band. Great song!

Every now and then a forgotton classic is unearthed. Yes there are many great versions of this song, but for me, this is outstanding.
Mick showing his romantic, lonely side, heavenly influenced by the extremely wonderful Steve Marriot and Faces and Humble Pie. RIP Joe and Steve etc.

ok i get your point, but i really cant understand that anyone can say that the clash version is painful to listen to ... like i have said the song is a sad one, they make it sound like its happening to them ... awesome version with real feelings i would say

I loved this song ever since I heard it
this song makes me wanna hold mick and cuddle him. I feel the pain in his voice and I've felt the same pain with a girl who was my best friend and I fell in love with her. but anyway this song is fantastic. haven't heard any other version but I don't need to. this is instantly my favorite. I always loved mick's songs because they are either about love (I think mick is a heartthrob) or his voice is just really good!(ya got to admit his voice is super hot)

Better than than the Jam version. Mick Jones doesn't wish he was a soul singer here but gives it his unpretentious stint for real.
It does the same to me, the most important line in this song for me has to be "I just can't go on giving my life away"

I will admit the first time I heard this I chuckled a bit, feeling like Mick was being melodramtic (even though he is my favorite). The second time I actually caught the desperation in his voice. I feel like a damn fool for dismissing it first. It's such an honest cover, I really empathize with him now.
Even though I think the vocals are not as good as Stevie Winwood, this one is prob my fav version

well m8 i was there,punk/clash was in my teenage life and i will say it even now, the music scene was nothing before and it`s been more or less pretty crap since, there are a few bands worthy of credit before and even since punk/clash but punk was the voice of a new generation which will never die and to me and many others there is only one band that mattered from that generation and that was the clash.
