    "Out of kindness, I suppose..." What a trio. The lyrics are intriguing and the melody and harmonies are so very sweet...

    Willie’s perfect on this song. For years I thought he’d written it. Still the best at conveying it.

    Each of these are one of my three favorite people Emmy Lou from Birmingham, I am from Mc Calla, Alabama, and I was the perfect age to marry her someday,, and I always thought I could, and of course I never would. j And I was a nobody, and I love her.
    Lyle Lovett, ugly from the front, what a man. So talented he can accompany anybody. I saw him at the McCallum in Palm Springs one night, wow, and he deservedly was chasing a 'Pretty Woman', and while he was 'ugly from the front', he caught her.
    And Willy Nelson, he does not know it but I was on his stage crew in South Lake Tahoe a couple times, 1981-1983( O was a room service cook in the hotel kitche, worked stage hands in the theater a few times, got to listen up close and personal during his shows, before we then busted our butts and packed them back up, his sister Bobby was always there, would not know me from Adam. Now here they all are, in front of my face in one song. Happy days are here again, on RUclips.
    Thank you

    I do like one guy with a guitar esp. cuz this strikes me as a simple story & a simple song...I was always really partial to Hoyt Axton on this song, but then I was exposed to that version first, when I was very young, 5 years old or so,..we were always big on Hoyt Axton, he played our county fair the same year he was in "Gremlins" I believe it was..that was really cool..my dad & uncle Jeff talked to him after & gave him the lyrics & maybe the basic chords or whatever that he used for a song Uncle Jeff wrote, about picking ferns, peeling cascara bark, & timber work here in the northwest, & how hard times were, I remember Hoyt just walking up & talking to em like just bumping into someone at the store & striking a conversation, he didn't put on any airs, whatsoever...(not saying Hoyt recorded it, cuz he didn't, but it was still awesome & a good memory, & story of how down to earth Hoyt Axton was),.

      Yeah, Mickey Raphael. Larry Music-Man got it right. Back in the early '90s I so badly wanted his job! I was a good blues and country harp player, with experience on the tremolo harp that Mickey uses on this song (only other guys I had ever used it before was Utah Phillips and Jim Ringer). I also played some button accordion, maybe even before Mickey started. O, I so wanted to audition for Willie's band. Willie, though, is one loyal s.o.b. He'd never double cross a friend. And Mickey was Willie's friend.

    One of the greatest songs...absolutely right. But give credit to TVZ; say his name.
    And then they destroy the song by changing the lyrics. The Federales did not let Pancho "slip away" in the first chorus - they let hime "hang around". They did let Lefty "slip away" in the second, after his part in Pancho's biting the dust, and then let Lefty "go so wrong" in the third. There's quite a story here...please tell it right!

    I've loved this song since I was a child, I'm sure these singers in their own right are ok singers, but not with song this was very bad.. emmylou tried too hard she wasn't singing it she was straight up shouting it and Lyle well idk he was trying to be epic.. Willie was spot on yea it was 30 years later his voice has aged but it's what we knew... not tryin to harp on anyone person but this wasn't Epic at all.. it was epically a let down those three voices didn't match up at all or once in this song

    • @88HEATHENWOLF
      @88HEATHENWOLF 4 года назад

      it's because Willie and Lyle are actually hitting the vocals just right in terms of timing, Emmylou is about a beat faster and she's fucking up the entire thing.

    • @ngzcaz
      @ngzcaz 3 года назад

      Have to agree... I expected better from all the talent that was on the stage.

    • @ngzcaz
      @ngzcaz 3 года назад +1

      @@88HEATHENWOLF The timing certainly wasn't on. Willie traditionally has his own timing, EmmyLou was a bit fast and Lyle was along for the ride. More importantly for me was the arrangement of the song and the inflections of the singers themselves. I've heard many versions of this and this was perhaps the least impressive for me..
      I wonder what the performers themselves thought of it when they heard it played back ? Individually I enjoy all the singers, but in this case, not together.

    Despite the Stars on show that was a poor effort - Emmylou starts off ok but Lovett shouldn't have been on the stage , ruined it - I discovered a version of Pancho & Lefty yesterday by two guys named Tim Gregg and Jay Wickizer - look them up , the BEST version or your money back . It really is SUPERB . Townes Van Zandt was a Genius , not a bad song in him .
