Brilliant tutorial Ian - and the clearest yet. You put a lot of work into it, and done a good job which will help a lot of Flyers. Every Flyer and Operator should watch this. I just wish that other Content Creators would take down their videos that are past their use-by date. If you take them down or make them private, you lose all the viewing figures and it actually dents your channel figures quite badly. But you can edit the title and mention it's now out of date. 90% of hobbiest owners will continue to ignore these, forgo registration etc. It's too over-complicated and most folks just want to snap some nice pics or footage of a landscape.

@@ChazTyldsley Yes I agree, but if you stroll into curry's or some other bricks and mortar shop, they will likely be obligated to tell you all this. its only if you buy from a Chinese seller or the grey market you will be oblivious. Charles imagine being totally new to the drone world, you are browsing around currys and get talking to the sales rep. After telling all the things it can do, he then proceeds to tell you, that you need to take a test, pay £9 for a license and then consider indemnity insurance price unknown (just in case). Would you still be keen to cough up £1000 to £1500 for the privilege of owning the drone?
Here in sweden it were really easy to take A1/A3 and A2. It were only to download a pdf file, we have 24h to take the licens from you start. I did the questions on my mobile and had the pdf file open on my tablet. Took around one hour to take both licens. If the test are the same in UK like it were here, just do the A2. A1/A3 are included in A2
funny that. been flying years, big homemade things in the big park early when no one around, guess what, no one died. now i'd be a criminal, could impact a lot that if prosecuted, like getting credit, bank accounts, car insurance costs, all those things have higher premiums if you cant tick the box saying no criminal convictions, they dont want or expect explanations, just a box ticking
My biggest issue is the recurring annual fee. I'm happy to stick an ID on my drone and hold an operator ID, but I detest the fact that I have to renew each year. Just another way to extract cash from Joe public.

I'm happy to pay my national insurance to receive healthcare from the NHS, I'm happy to pay council tax for rubbish collection, local facilities (e.g. libraries, schools, recreation/parks, street lighting, law enforcement, fire service etc. I'm happy to pay for a fishing license to fund the environment agency and look after our waterways. But it doesn't cost anything to keep my name and number on a list. Happy to pay an extra £16 if I buy another drone or an admin fee to swap a drone over. But I won't be paying each year.

Instead of spending money to fix them, the council spent it all making cyclist routes, closing actual roads and turning them into cyclist only, beyond disgusting. Don't forget you have to pay to park on the roads, Pay annual fees for the permit...it's getting too much.
@@randymch there's gdpr rules about keeping personal information up to date. So they can't just take your details once and then that's it for life. I doubt they make any money when you think about the administration and computer costs. You'd pay more to change your address with your car insurance for example.

Being able to do bits for commercial work is a great addition - but not being able to fly in recreational areas like parks early in the morning is annoying :( Again really appreciate you putting this together!
Exactly the same situation... Appreciate the video explaining. My Mavic Pro is pretty much useless now (disconnection issues) & was looking to upgrade to Air 2 or something, now the Mini 2 is looking like the only feasible option for most circumstances.
Oh I know you :D Still kind of confused, so with the mini I can technically fly in residential, industrial and commercial areas so long not endangering anyone or anything? Basically can fly anywhere as long as it's not restricted airspace? And need the operator ID for the camera?
This is a great video but the simple fact is that because such a production needs to exist, the rules are doomed to failure. We shouldn't need the rules to be broken down into understandable chunks. They should be clear, concise and proportionate. They're not, especially for a lay-person - and as such I believe they will be ignored. Great job, CAA - way to improve safety.

I’m in the US and our FAA just passed a 400+ pages of regulations. We have about 29 months before it takes effect. I appreciate your time and energy to go through the new rules, not easy task as it’s time consuming. Great job Ian. Happy new year!
The very fact this is happening both sides of the pond tells you it's a concerted move to start changing the nature of access to airspace for ordinary citizens. 1. Restrict access 2. Close access 3. Hand over areas to military-only use. 4. Sell off commercial access rights 5. Tax companies to access it.

Was building DIY drones and tricopters since around 2012 out of poplar wood and tuppaware. Got into racing drones around 2015. Quit 3 years ago after constant persecution. I even joined the oldest RC club in London (Chingford) back in 2015 to stop being hassled but even they won't allow 'drones' anymore. Shame. Met a lot of good people and had a lot of good times building tracks at parks and quarrys etc. Gave up 3 years ago as it was just getting ridiculous. Always feeling like a naughty school kid every time I went out flying waiting for somebody to complain, have a picnic or being playing football on the runway we were paying to be maintaned! I have been registered with the BMFA and the UK drone regulator fopr the last 2 years anyway. Just bought a Mini2 and watched this and got depressed. Thanks for the detailed and clear info.

Spent so long trying to desipher the written rules I actually gave up, insured my Mini2 and used my own common sense rules. Now I 99% understand. Great explanation 👍

I looked at this issue when I purchased my mini 2 a few weeks ago. I was tempted to get a mavic air 2 but knew it was going to be a big issue flying it after 2020. Glad I went for the mini 2 as it is an amazing little drone and does everything I need it to. It was really easy to register online with the CAA for my Flyers ID and Operators ID. Loving it.
Same I’m glad I got the mini 2 as the rules aren’t as unfair on them as the heavier drones. Hopefully they don’t change either if people don’t fly them too low over peoples houses and spoil it.
Hi Paul, very interesting to hear from someone considering exactly the same choices as I have been. Without the clarity Ian has given us, I've been swithering and as late as yesterday was still on the point of going with the Mavic Air 2. (Unlike you and Ian, I'd not dug deep enough to understand the severe restrictions on the Air 2 and others from today.) I'm so glad I didn't make an expensive mistake but found this video first! These regulation changes smack of a lack of clear thinking though, which is worrying from a regulatory body like the CAA.
I ordered a Mini 2 today after being sorely tempted by the Air 2. I'm not going to complain though because the Mini 2 looks amazing from nearly every angle as a beginner drone.
@@davidmchutchison3041 The decision about what to buy next is going to be a difficult one, especially when no manufacturers have taken the plunge to produce a CE marked product. So I can understand the frustration! For me it is a waiting game, but I did decide to take the A2COFC qualification...the only reason I did this was because it means I can fly in the a1 category with drones up to 500g... and my spark is 304g... also I can fly my p4p in the a2 category because it is under 2kg. Having the A2COFC qualification means I can fly for another 2 years within those categories. It was worth the price, and the deals for that course in December were really good... £99 and it lasts for 5 years! So for me it was a no brainer, but if your looking for your first drone then it's best to hang on for a bit and wait for the CE mark.👍
I just want to fly my drone no more than a handful of times a year. I've complied with CCA rules so far but this is too restrictive and complicated for the occasional hobbyist. I may as well just rip my ID off my drone and chance it. I know that's not the right thing to say but that's how I feel.
How often you do something is irrelevant when it comes to rules and even fees payable. Whether you drive a car every day or once a year, you still have to pay for an MOT, road tax and insurance. The rules are not complicated and frankly, if someone doesn’t have the intelligence to read and understand the rules, I don’t want them taking control of a drone which in the hands of an idiot can be a highly dangerous machine!
And bingo, the hand goes up from someone declaring themselves to be one of the irresponsible fools that give all of us a bad name and are usually the ones causing crashes and accidents because they can’t see that rules are not just for the sake of it, they are there to stop people taking drones lightly and not realizing the damage they can do and how to avoid it.

(And so I disagree that these are dangerous people) Like a fpv pilot Vs some guy with a Mavic air and a loiiisense, who knows more and who is more skilled? My mini 2 arrived this week. It is my 1st drone. I did a lot of research and reading of the regulations and have got my user ID. This is a great video as it has helped confirm my understanding of what I had read. I still feel like I am doing something illegal when I fly though. Like you said, everyone who doesn’t fly a drone seems to have a dislike towards drones.

@@IaninLondon Hello Ian. I think some of the rules are needed but generally I thing they are a bit excessive. I do think it’s a bit too much and is in line with this country’s nanny state. I don’t think I will change much except drive some of the pilots underground and not register. The only prosecutions will be those pilots who really abuse the system. Great video. Many Thanks. I can see why the Government encourage people to fly drones in the category of under 250g to minimize damage to properties and people. I used to fly piston powered remote control helicopters on land "far away from people and properties". Most of them are over 2Kg and they can kill so I had to join a flying club to fly them in field in the middle of nowhere. I would not dream of flying them in built up area. I was thinking of doing the training course 3 years ago in order to fly drones in built up area. I am glad I waited and just bought a DJI Mini 2. It is much more steady than I thought. The camera quality is very good indeed.

As an Air 2 owner, I've already received comms from the CAA regarding the new rules but you mentioned more inwas not aware of. I can only see drone flying becoming more and more difficult as more incidents occur due to irresponsible people. As a responsible drone flyer, it frustrates me but also makes me determined to continue my hobby whilst doing so safe and responsibly even if it limits my freedom. This has also confirmed that I am currently flying in accordance of the new rules anyway so for me, very little will change as these rules begin. Thanks again.

They basically made laws that make flying an mp1/2,one of the better camera quality and safer drones around recreationally, against the law anywhere worth flying, and given mini2 and similar tiny less stable drones permission to fly where like, talk about killing a hobby dead. (And if they don't make small drones just as restricted within a few yrs after everyone interested has splashed out to buy them, i be VERY surprised) Excellent video btw, but new rules are generally giving people with cheap drones who don't care if crash them ability test their lack of skillz and at same time making those with expensive drones who too scared of crashing them because of cost unable now to even fly damn things anywhere worth flying! (yes i own an mp2, hence annoyance lol) And £250 1 day course to get an A2 cofc (price quoted from heliguy) REALLY?? Talk about killing a hobby dead....

In fairness, there have been incidents in which ‘the presence of a drone is believed to have been involved’ but to say drones have caused a lot of deaths is unsubstantiated press reporting. Having said that, I 💯 agree with your comment that these rules are long overdue and every responsible drone flyer should welcome them.
Ive just ordered a mini 2. I will only be operating it in remote areas and generally where their are no other people / buildings around. Ive watched your other videos on the mini 2 you produced hence my purchase (you made up my mind for me as a complete novice). I’m a photographer and just getting into video of my walks so the drone will be an adjunct to my work (photographs from different angles and video footage I ordinarily can’t get). This is indeed a great insight into our changing world / laws/ restrictions. Brilliant thanks ....
Great video. I am now glad I refrained from buying the Air 2 in November and switched at the last minute to buying the new Mini 2. The registration and operator ID is so simple to do and even though I didn’t need to, I also got my ‘Flyer ID’ as it just consists of 40 common sense questions. If I was ever stopped or questioned by the authorities, I would rather have the option to say that I have taken the online test and have the pilot ID, which is over and beyond the requirements of just reading the user manual of the sub 250g Mini 2. It also shows you have something from the CAA and that you are taking the new rules seriously. It wasn’t difficult and I got all 40 questions correct after quickly reading through the drone code. I understand that not everyone with a Mavic Mini or Mini 2 drone will agree with my logic to take the online test to get the pilot ID, but that’s my personal choice. Hopefully the lack of rules for the A0 classification drones, doesn’t lead to a few silly incidents that spoil it for the rest of us. But with the new rules restricting sales of drones to the likes of DJI, I think we will hopefully see these smaller drones being vastly improved and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 4K at 60fps on the Mini 3 later this year!
Yes I agree man, I have a mavic mini, and also have flyer id and oberator number, I just wanted to do test also just to keep me correct and making sure we stick to the rules I suppose, do you know what the max weight we can fly a drone up to?

E.g. if you add weight to your mavic Mini and take it over 250g, then you move it into the next category/class and rules then change dramatically and you can no longer fly anywhere near people as you can in the C0 class. Ignoring the rules hasn't brought these worse rules into effect, much as you would like to blame your fellow citizen. Nobody was getting killed or hurt. Cigarettes and alcohol still fully legal causing death every single day.

Great video, excellent summary of the new rules. If the CAA think they’re solving a problem by implementing these rules then there deadly wrong. The majority of the users of the medium/bigger drones will be well aware of the safety side of the hobby and respect those rules. The people who are irresponsible with drones already are the people who aren’t going to abide by the new rules, because they won’t know there even are new rules 🤷🏻♂️

Thanks Ian for clearing up the new rules starting today, great instructional video, sadly and rather true to form, the CAA and the public just does not like drone users, however, most of the comments below are true, its hardly likely that anyone is going to be out at the time you decide to go and fly your aircraft, looking at your permissions and or checking what your doing, as many have said, if you were being robbed in your house, they would not come out unless they've actually injured you, and then it would take them time, Im not sure how they are going to police this, lots of drone officers, with all the relevant laws in their head and sub categories of flying classifications and legacy drones, like some of the guys I switched to Mavic Air 2 recently, and got rid of my Mavic Mini, here we go again, moving the goal posts when people have spent their hard earned money, and then finding there sparkling new kit is unclassified and likely to be obsolete....C'est La Vie...

This did clear up that I thought I could use my Pro 2 in built up areas with my A2 CofC as didn't realise it at only my mini 2. So for me I read it as : Busier places = mini 2 and over uninvolved people (not crowds) Countryside = Pro 2 not over anyone Seems pointless anyone having an Air now.
Madness. The least invested in drone flying, in terms of investment in training, expenditure, experience and just about everything get to fly in the most complicated situations. And to be totally transparent, I could be classified as one of those. I can see a big rework coming once the incidents start to arise.

I'm really relieved to hear that my Mini 2 puts me at the ‘good end’ of the new regs spectrum. I was fearing I'd have to sell up and get a different model. But I see now that simply because the drone is so light, the Mini 2 has potentially the best regulatory freedom vs. creative freedom. Big relief.

As a BMFA Member, I'm already paying my £9 a year registration fee...All model aircraft became "Drones"...overnight...I knew they'd ditch the 250gram rule....so predictable.
@@chrislloyd3198 Well, the BMFA just rolled over and agreed...The irony is, the vast majority of BMFA members do not own or fly "drones" Now, every one of them has registration numbers on every plane and it's £9 a year.

So basically, 1000s of drones are going to become obselete despite having the same specs but no classification. What a pisstake. I hadn't realised my phantom is now not allowed in recreational areas. That is insane. They really need to reconsider retrospective classification and that 150m from industrial and recreational area rule. I thought I was allowed to fly over congested areas with the new laws (but keeping 50m horizontal separation), but clearly that isnt the case. Thanks for clarifying this!
Nahh I would not say obsolete just un registered ;-) If there illegal why the heck would you put a sticker on it telling who it belongs too. The chance a someone catching the pilot if your being careful because its now illegal is almost zero. This is so irresponsible of the CAA as it will just drive these underground and we will loose the safety as why comply with any rules if just by turning it on your a criminal. Up yours I would say after 2022 and just fly stealth. If is falls out of the sky well shit happens no one will know who's it is hence why I say this rule is stupid becasue its making the safety aspect much worse. After all a criminal even today won't register ;-) only the good guys. I'm not going to stop flying my 500g drone after 2022 but I may still have a legal one so any footage was always filmed on that one ;-) if any dork asks.
@@michaeldawson6309 I might well do the same. I have a Ph3s at the moment, and after 2022 will probably get a 'classified' drone for work, and keep my phantom for personal use in the a3 category. They really need to see the potential issues with the new laws and what they're gonna force people to do. I have mates with Mavic minis, and they're not bothering with OP IDs. Can't blame them

I really can’t see how this will be policed people will still fly where they want. You can’t get a policeman to visit you house if you are burgled these days so they are not going to waste time searching for someone flying at a beach only to find they have the training to allow it!

Yeah don't take test because f ing council are very busy puting up no flying drone signs, I have bought an e scooter to find some spots and have to travel miles now

Now the question is will they just had the fine out and let you challenge it in court probably. But no the only agancy which can regulate drone use is the CAA

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of UAVhub. I'd just upgraded to an Air 2s from a mini 2 and was starting to get brassed off with which online drone company to go with for my A2 cof c. Weirdly this vid popped up one morning, I watched it, and as always, you explained and put across from your personal experience, the ins and outs of the UAVhub course. Anyways, that was last week, and I took the exam this morning and passed! The course was excellent, with much more than needed for the exam, but that was the bonus, I now have much more knowledge than just passing the exam. Great stuff! Congrats on passing.... Make sure you actually need the GVC; a lot more paperwork and no actual extra permissions; it's just a base requirement for those who need to apply for other, additional permissions.👍
@@IaninLondon hi ian , great videos. just to be very clear on flying a mavic pro (i have the mini 2 also), regarding distances from buildings. i am a club flyer with bmfa insurance. am i correct in saying i can fly it (safely) within 30 meters of any buildings rather than the new 150m distance now the new laws are in place ?
Would love to know how they will police this complex law. If we who fly drones are struggling to understand it, are they going to train special Drone police to have all of this information and patrol the place looking for illegal drone flyers. I agree there need to be rules. I am responsible, but not everyone is. I do not want someone flying a drone spying in my backyard. I do not fly low over anyone's house. But we do want to fly on beaches, parks, etc. I think drone users need to organize and lobby to have a say in these policies because my fear is at some future date we will just not be able to fly at all. For now I am in SA and while drones are popular I rarely see any.
It's not going to be about policing the drones themselves, it's going to be about policing and restricting the airspaces - I'll bet money that within a few years airspaces will be increasingly classified as drone-unfriendly in legal terms. This is just "enabling" legislation for what's to come later.
Thank you for putting the time and effort into explaining the changes for people before they get caught out. It wasn't publicised for recreational pilots at all well. Very interesting to see the different interpretations. Myself and colleagues consider a3 to be the same as the old recreational rules. All those places you've listed we considered congested areas anyway. You've completely hit the nail on the head about it needing to be clarified and I personally see it as a good thing rather than unfair, but that comes from the definition of congested area in the ANO being hazy, the question we've all had was can somewhere like a beach be congested at 3pm but not congested at 3am. We interpreted a place people live work or do recreation didn't actually need said people to be present.
I would say that sums it up. If you fly in a field you have 100% chance of not being caught by anyone. Especially the old bill. If they turn up worse case fly it off or land it a mile away ;-) sorry plod I lost it.... stupid twats the lot of them.
To fish you need a licence, to ride an ‘E-scooter’ your soon need a licence, you can’t kayak without a permit, you can’t do this, you can’t do that, without someone either trying to make money or just stop you having enjoyment. So much red tape to fly a drone for 10 minutes.
Government just want us kept prisoner in our own houses or in the workplace. Soon all leisure or pleasure activities will be taxed, licensed or restricted in some way. We have a camper van that we can't take anywhere other than overpriced overcrowded sites and that was before covid.
Very informative video. I bought a Magic Mini in lockdown 1 mainly to take on holiday for getting footage of our kids etc. After watching this I'm even more pleased with my purchase. I took my test and purchased my Flyer ID just before Christmas too. Thanks 👍
Anyone started a petition yet to the CAA re retrospective classifications? I know it’s early days but we’re out of the EU as of the 1st too so can’t we make our own rules as a country. Seams all to rubber stamp to me. Making way for the likes of the delivery drone crowds to £££ their way in & push us enthusiasts & lighter commercial peeps out.
These "rules" are from EEC regulators and have been "rubber stamped" in the UK as "Retained EU Law". This is completely out of order as we are no longer in the EEC. Just how many other "Retained EU laws" are there. What a stitch up!
Very informative, but as with all laws how and who will police this. Yes the drone has remote ID, but with all public bodies there aren't enough staff. Just look at track and trace....
@@IaninLondon I shall be applying for ID and user ID and thankfully I have just purchased the Mini 2. But as for criminals and those that can't be bothered, how can this be inforced. We had several drones fly over our Refinery sometime ago and security could not locate any pilots.
Well it was essential because of all those aircraft brought down by drones. There was that one in ... and that time near ... and well, for Safety, you know.
Your drone is probably tied to your phone so they will know your GPS location and when you been flying. Even your car post 2018 has a GPS locator in it now!
Just come across this video which is really well made and full of great info. I recently got my Flyer ID and Operator ID to fly my new DJI Mini 2 and I completely agree with the rules the CAA are setting out in my eyes. Not because I have a sub 250g drone but that it gives people more safety over heavy weight drones that can cause real damage if they crash land. I a m loving my Mini 2 and will continue to do so until such a time that something may change in the laws as they always change every year. I think places like schools should however have zones that are not allowed to be recorded at all full stop along with the military. airports zones etc

In other words they don't want us to fly model aircraft, They can't ban it, so they just make it so wrapped in regulations/rules that people don't bother. They did a similar thing with CB radio years ago and how many CB ers are there about nowadays, I don't know any, the new rules/regs effectively destroyed that hobby overnight, and that's the aim now, Only the commercial and very dedicated pilot, prepared to jump through hoops will continue flying. Their aim is to wipe out the hobby, and it looks like they will succeed.
@@iamrocketray CB radio is alive and kicking , you dont need a licence anymore and the old AM, USB LSB channels have been legalised , the only problem now is to much noise on the frequency in towns and citys so people go up hills and run nets , ive been back on for 2 years and its not the same as it was , but i would say its alot better. I also have a mavic air and im considering selling it and going for the mini 2. Just a shame everything has to be policed all the time.
@@iamrocketray People will just ignore the rules or plead ignorance, I've got a Mini 2 and a Phantom 4, if the police ever turn up at my house I'll just say I was flying my Mini regardless of which drone it was. I fully intend to ignore the rules, I've always flown considerately and will continue to do so.

if you fly safe, there shouldn't be much to worry about. I think a lot of people will buy the mini2 thinking they can do exactly what they want causing more rules. Just fly safe.

Will NOT happen, nobody cares for drones and neither will judges, especially when regulation and the state making money is concerned. They wanted to get rid of drones anyway so regulation will only get more complex and expensive and will never go back to the old times.
Just in case the Uk hadn’t become stupid enough with Tories in power, we go one step further with this nonsense. I am all for rules about people’s privacy or airports and jails etc but with zero cases of serious injury or damage so far, and not one documented risk assessment carried out to show the reasonings behind these rules, yet here we are with regulations for quads that haven’t even been made yet. Furthermore the people in the country who will deliberately ignore the rules will carry on regardless, yet the lawful ones will continue to be forced to sell or leave what is potentially a really nice hobby as they have no place left to fly anymore. Additionally, how our police force are expected to enforce such rulings when they cannot even manage with their current workload just goes to show you have totally out of touch such authorities are and how easily anyone with half a brain will be able to get around them. I.e. “All my footage was taken pre 2021” and “ it weighed X anyway” so unless they are carrying a set of scales and or speed gun and can catch you actually in the act, then I can’t help but feel it’s going to be a nightmare for our already overworked police force to uphold. Also, what exactly is the £9 quid for? To file a form so that the police can just consult a list and go door to door should an incident occur? Great Britain my arse, total sham these days and we are allowing it to become worse everyday
Same as covid. The government is incapable of doing a decent job of anything. I see you like to hate the tories but the fact is they are all equally incompetent. Imagine Diane Abbot trying to write up drone regs, she can't even put her shoes on the right feet.
The bottom line is that public opinion, supported and encouraged by CAA and government, don’t want people flying drones recreationally, so the chances of CAA willingly entertaining retrospective certification of ‘legacy’ models is slim at best. They have nothing to gain by making it sensible and easy, and everything to gain by restricting our hobby. It’s a sad philosophy that has permeated all levels of government and civil service.
But when C1 classified models come out, you'll still be able to fly in towns... So these rules are great for new drones but Crap for existing drones...
Predictable Government approach to most things they can't make money from...Corruption starts at the top and we only need to look at who benefits from this Draconian nonsense for which is a hobby, I've flown model aircraft safely for over 40 Yrs and haven't seen nonsense like this...

90% of hobbiest owners will continue to ignore these, forgo registration etc. It's too over-complicated and most folks just want to snap some nice pics or footage of a landscape.

Charles imagine being totally new to the drone world, you are browsing around currys and get talking to the sales rep. After telling all the things it can do, he then proceeds to tell you, that you need to take a test, pay £9 for a license and then consider indemnity insurance price unknown (just in case). Would you still be keen to cough up £1000 to £1500 for the privilege of owning the drone?

Here in sweden it were really easy to take A1/A3 and A2. It were only to download a pdf file, we have 24h to take the licens from you start. I did the questions on my mobile and had the pdf file open on my tablet. Took around one hour to take both licens. If the test are the same in UK like it were here, just do the A2. A1/A3 are included in A2

funny that. been flying years, big homemade things in the big park early when no one around, guess what, no one died. now i'd be a criminal, could impact a lot that if prosecuted, like getting credit, bank accounts, car insurance costs, all those things have higher premiums if you cant tick the box saying no criminal convictions, they dont want or expect explanations, just a box ticking

My biggest issue is the recurring annual fee. I'm happy to stick an ID on my drone and hold an operator ID, but I detest the fact that I have to renew each year. Just another way to extract cash from Joe public.
And whats wrong with extracting cash from Joe Public? The NHS, Schools, Army, Police, Fires Stations, Government, & Roads run on free air.

I'm happy to pay my national insurance to receive healthcare from the NHS, I'm happy to pay council tax for rubbish collection, local facilities (e.g. libraries, schools, recreation/parks, street lighting, law enforcement, fire service etc.
I'm happy to pay for a fishing license to fund the environment agency and look after our waterways.
But it doesn't cost anything to keep my name and number on a list. Happy to pay an extra £16 if I buy another drone or an admin fee to swap a drone over. But I won't be paying each year.

@@randymch there's gdpr rules about keeping personal information up to date. So they can't just take your details once and then that's it for life. I doubt they make any money when you think about the administration and computer costs. You'd pay more to change your address with your car insurance for example.

Being able to do bits for commercial work is a great addition - but not being able to fly in recreational areas like parks early in the morning is annoying :( Again really appreciate you putting this together!
Exactly the same situation... Appreciate the video explaining. My Mavic Pro is pretty much useless now (disconnection issues) & was looking to upgrade to Air 2 or something, now the Mini 2 is looking like the only feasible option for most circumstances.
Oh I know you :D Still kind of confused, so with the mini I can technically fly in residential, industrial and commercial areas so long not endangering anyone or anything? Basically can fly anywhere as long as it's not restricted airspace? And need the operator ID for the camera?

This is a great video but the simple fact is that because such a production needs to exist, the rules are doomed to failure. We shouldn't need the rules to be broken down into understandable chunks. They should be clear, concise and proportionate. They're not, especially for a lay-person - and as such I believe they will be ignored. Great job, CAA - way to improve safety.

The very fact this is happening both sides of the pond tells you it's a concerted move to start changing the nature of access to airspace for ordinary citizens. 1. Restrict access 2. Close access 3. Hand over areas to military-only use. 4. Sell off commercial access rights 5. Tax companies to access it.

Was building DIY drones and tricopters since around 2012 out of poplar wood and tuppaware. Got into racing drones around 2015. Quit 3 years ago after constant persecution. I even joined the oldest RC club in London (Chingford) back in 2015 to stop being hassled but even they won't allow 'drones' anymore. Shame. Met a lot of good people and had a lot of good times building tracks at parks and quarrys etc. Gave up 3 years ago as it was just getting ridiculous. Always feeling like a naughty school kid every time I went out flying waiting for somebody to complain, have a picnic or being playing football on the runway we were paying to be maintaned! I have been registered with the BMFA and the UK drone regulator fopr the last 2 years anyway. Just bought a Mini2 and watched this and got depressed. Thanks for the detailed and clear info.

I looked at this issue when I purchased my mini 2 a few weeks ago. I was tempted to get a mavic air 2 but knew it was going to be a big issue flying it after 2020. Glad I went for the mini 2 as it is an amazing little drone and does everything I need it to. It was really easy to register online with the CAA for my Flyers ID and Operators ID. Loving it.
Same I’m glad I got the mini 2 as the rules aren’t as unfair on them as the heavier drones. Hopefully they don’t change either if people don’t fly them too low over peoples houses and spoil it.
Hi Paul, very interesting to hear from someone considering exactly the same choices as I have been. Without the clarity Ian has given us, I've been swithering and as late as yesterday was still on the point of going with the Mavic Air 2. (Unlike you and Ian, I'd not dug deep enough to understand the severe restrictions on the Air 2 and others from today.) I'm so glad I didn't make an expensive mistake but found this video first! These regulation changes smack of a lack of clear thinking though, which is worrying from a regulatory body like the CAA.
I ordered a Mini 2 today after being sorely tempted by the Air 2. I'm not going to complain though because the Mini 2 looks amazing from nearly every angle as a beginner drone.
@@davidmchutchison3041 The decision about what to buy next is going to be a difficult one, especially when no manufacturers have taken the plunge to produce a CE marked product. So I can understand the frustration! For me it is a waiting game, but I did decide to take the A2COFC qualification...the only reason I did this was because it means I can fly in the a1 category with drones up to 500g... and my spark is 304g... also I can fly my p4p in the a2 category because it is under 2kg. Having the A2COFC qualification means I can fly for another 2 years within those categories. It was worth the price, and the deals for that course in December were really good... £99 and it lasts for 5 years! So for me it was a no brainer, but if your looking for your first drone then it's best to hang on for a bit and wait for the CE mark.👍

I just want to fly my drone no more than a handful of times a year. I've complied with CCA rules so far but this is too restrictive and complicated for the occasional hobbyist. I may as well just rip my ID off my drone and chance it. I know that's not the right thing to say but that's how I feel.
I flown drones in London (not a park but a street) and I have never been caught lol.
How often you do something is irrelevant when it comes to rules and even fees payable. Whether you drive a car every day or once a year, you still have to pay for an MOT, road tax and insurance.
The rules are not complicated and frankly, if someone doesn’t have the intelligence to read and understand the rules, I don’t want them taking control of a drone which in the hands of an idiot can be a highly dangerous machine!
And bingo, the hand goes up from someone declaring themselves to be one of the irresponsible fools that give all of us a bad name and are usually the ones causing crashes and accidents because they can’t see that rules are not just for the sake of it, they are there to stop people taking drones lightly and not realizing the damage they can do and how to avoid it.

Drones ARE to be taken lightly, atleast the light ones, (below 3 kilos) safety first obviously but no need to paranoid about it.

My mini 2 arrived this week. It is my 1st drone. I did a lot of research and reading of the regulations and have got my user ID. This is a great video as it has helped confirm my understanding of what I had read. I still feel like I am doing something illegal when I fly though. Like you said, everyone who doesn’t fly a drone seems to have a dislike towards drones.

I think some of the rules are needed but generally I thing they are a bit excessive.
I do think it’s a bit too much and is in line with this country’s nanny state.
I don’t think I will change much except drive some of the pilots underground and not register.
The only prosecutions will be those pilots who really abuse the system.

Great video. Many Thanks. I can see why the Government encourage people to fly drones in the category of under 250g to minimize damage to properties and people. I used to fly piston powered remote control helicopters on land "far away from people and properties". Most of them are over 2Kg and they can kill so I had to join a flying club to fly them in field in the middle of nowhere. I would not dream of flying them in built up area. I was thinking of doing the training course 3 years ago in order to fly drones in built up area. I am glad I waited and just bought a DJI Mini 2. It is much more steady than I thought. The camera quality is very good indeed.

As an Air 2 owner, I've already received comms from the CAA regarding the new rules but you mentioned more inwas not aware of. I can only see drone flying becoming more and more difficult as more incidents occur due to irresponsible people. As a responsible drone flyer, it frustrates me but also makes me determined to continue my hobby whilst doing so safe and responsibly even if it limits my freedom. This has also confirmed that I am currently flying in accordance of the new rules anyway so for me, very little will change as these rules begin. Thanks again.

They basically made laws that make flying an mp1/2,one of the better camera quality and safer drones around recreationally, against the law anywhere worth flying, and given mini2 and similar tiny less stable drones permission to fly where like, talk about killing a hobby dead. (And if they don't make small drones just as restricted within a few yrs after everyone interested has splashed out to buy them, i be VERY surprised)

Thank god all these rules have come out, this will drastically lower the amount of drone related deaths which were, frankly, getting out of hand.
They've been building all those nightingale, er ...... i mean Amy Johnson hospitals to cope with the massive surge in patients.
In fairness, there have been incidents in which ‘the presence of a drone is believed to have been involved’ but to say drones have caused a lot of deaths is unsubstantiated press reporting.
Having said that, I 💯 agree with your comment that these rules are long overdue and every responsible drone flyer should welcome them.

Ive just ordered a mini 2. I will only be operating it in remote areas and generally where their are no other people / buildings around. Ive watched your other videos on the mini 2 you produced hence my purchase (you made up my mind for me as a complete novice). I’m a photographer and just getting into video of my walks so the drone will be an adjunct to my work (photographs from different angles and video footage I ordinarily can’t get). This is indeed a great insight into our changing world / laws/ restrictions. Brilliant thanks ....

Great video. I am now glad I refrained from buying the Air 2 in November and switched at the last minute to buying the new Mini 2.
The registration and operator ID is so simple to do and even though I didn’t need to, I also got my ‘Flyer ID’ as it just consists of 40 common sense questions.
If I was ever stopped or questioned by the authorities, I would rather have the option to say that I have taken the online test and have the pilot ID, which is over and beyond the requirements of just reading the user manual of the sub 250g Mini 2.
It also shows you have something from the CAA and that you are taking the new rules seriously.
It wasn’t difficult and I got all 40 questions correct after quickly reading through the drone code.
I understand that not everyone with a Mavic Mini or Mini 2 drone will agree with my logic to take the online test to get the pilot ID, but that’s my personal choice.
Hopefully the lack of rules for the A0 classification drones, doesn’t lead to a few silly incidents that spoil it for the rest of us.
But with the new rules restricting sales of drones to the likes of DJI, I think we will hopefully see these smaller drones being vastly improved and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 4K at 60fps on the Mini 3 later this year!
Yes I agree man, I have a mavic mini, and also have flyer id and oberator number, I just wanted to do test also just to keep me correct and making sure we stick to the rules I suppose, do you know what the max weight we can fly a drone up to?

Hey there,
Depends on a multitude of things.
E.g. if you add weight to your mavic Mini and take it over 250g, then you move it into the next category/class and rules then change dramatically and you can no longer fly anywhere near people as you can in the C0 class.

Ignoring the rules hasn't brought these worse rules into effect, much as you would like to blame your fellow citizen. Nobody was getting killed or hurt. Cigarettes and alcohol still fully legal causing death every single day.

Sometimes you have to consider wind resistance. For example mountain flights might not always work with mini.

Great video, excellent summary of the new rules. If the CAA think they’re solving a problem by implementing these rules then there deadly wrong. The majority of the users of the medium/bigger drones will be well aware of the safety side of the hobby and respect those rules. The people who are irresponsible with drones already are the people who aren’t going to abide by the new rules, because they won’t know there even are new rules 🤷🏻♂️
Great, we leave the EU and we’re suddenly hit with all these onerous regulations, this is not what I voted for. Hundreds of pages of regulations to restrict my hobby, no way. I’m going to totally ignore these extra rules.

Thanks Ian for clearing up the new rules starting today, great instructional video, sadly and rather true to form, the CAA and the public just does not like drone users, however, most of the comments below are true, its hardly likely that anyone is going to be out at the time you decide to go and fly your aircraft, looking at your permissions and or checking what your doing, as many have said, if you were being robbed in your house, they would not come out unless they've actually injured you, and then it would take them time, Im not sure how they are going to police this, lots of drone officers, with all the relevant laws in their head and sub categories of flying classifications and legacy drones, like some of the guys I switched to Mavic Air 2 recently, and got rid of my Mavic Mini, here we go again, moving the goal posts when people have spent their hard earned money, and then finding there sparkling new kit is unclassified and likely to be obsolete....C'est La Vie...

This did clear up that I thought I could use my Pro 2 in built up areas with my A2 CofC as didn't realise it at only my mini 2.
So for me I read it as :
Busier places = mini 2 and over uninvolved people (not crowds)
Countryside = Pro 2 not over anyone
Seems pointless anyone having an Air now.
Madness. The least invested in drone flying, in terms of investment in training, expenditure, experience and just about everything get to fly in the most complicated situations. And to be totally transparent, I could be classified as one of those. I can see a big rework coming once the incidents start to arise.

I'm really relieved to hear that my Mini 2 puts me at the ‘good end’ of the new regs spectrum. I was fearing I'd have to sell up and get a different model. But I see now that simply because the drone is so light, the Mini 2 has potentially the best regulatory freedom vs. creative freedom. Big relief.

Anyone else remember the CAA dropping the no fly perimeter around airports and airfields to 1km not so long ago!! 🤔😮😁 That was quickly amended to 5km!! 😎👍

As a BMFA Member, I'm already paying my £9 a year registration fee...All model aircraft became "Drones"...overnight...I knew they'd ditch the 250gram rule....so predictable.
It is just not worth owning one. These new rules will kill the sport for most hobbyists

Now, every one of them has registration numbers on every plane and it's £9 a year.
I believe you get extra exemptions as a BFMA member. You can fly in recreational areas.

So basically, 1000s of drones are going to become obselete despite having the same specs but no classification. What a pisstake. I hadn't realised my phantom is now not allowed in recreational areas. That is insane. They really need to reconsider retrospective classification and that 150m from industrial and recreational area rule. I thought I was allowed to fly over congested areas with the new laws (but keeping 50m horizontal separation), but clearly that isnt the case. Thanks for clarifying this!
Nahh I would not say obsolete just un registered ;-) If there illegal why the heck would you put a sticker on it telling who it belongs too. The chance a someone catching the pilot if your being careful because its now illegal is almost zero. This is so irresponsible of the CAA as it will just drive these underground and we will loose the safety as why comply with any rules if just by turning it on your a criminal. Up yours I would say after 2022 and just fly stealth. If is falls out of the sky well shit happens no one will know who's it is hence why I say this rule is stupid becasue its making the safety aspect much worse. After all a criminal even today won't register ;-) only the good guys.
I'm not going to stop flying my 500g drone after 2022 but I may still have a legal one so any footage was always filmed on that one ;-) if any dork asks.

They really need to see the potential issues with the new laws and what they're gonna force people to do. I have mates with Mavic minis, and they're not bothering with OP IDs. Can't blame them

Similar rules over here in Norway. I am so happy I just got the Mini 2..! Insurance and registration OK, so it is just to go flying, did my first flight yesterday. Good fun.
I really can’t see how this will be policed people will still fly where they want. You can’t get a policeman to visit you house if you are burgled these days so they are not going to waste time searching for someone flying at a beach only to find they have the training to allow it!

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of UAVhub. I'd just upgraded to an Air 2s from a mini 2 and was starting to get brassed off with which online drone company to go with for my A2 cof c. Weirdly this vid popped up one morning, I watched it, and as always, you explained and put across from your personal experience, the ins and outs of the UAVhub course. Anyways, that was last week, and I took the exam this morning and passed! The course was excellent, with much more than needed for the exam, but that was the bonus, I now have much more knowledge than just passing the exam. Great package, Matt explains things brilliantly, I'm looking into the GVC now. Without your vid, I'd still be looking though. Nice one and thanks.👍😁
Great stuff! Congrats on passing.... Make sure you actually need the GVC; a lot more paperwork and no actual extra permissions; it's just a base requirement for those who need to apply for other, additional permissions.👍

@@IaninLondon hi ian , great videos. just to be very clear on flying a mavic pro (i have the mini 2 also), regarding distances from buildings. i am a club flyer with bmfa insurance. am i correct in saying i can fly it (safely) within 30 meters of any buildings rather than the new 150m distance now the new laws are in place ?
Would love to know how they will police this complex law. If we who fly drones are struggling to understand it, are they going to train special Drone police to have all of this information and patrol the place looking for illegal drone flyers. I agree there need to be rules. I am responsible, but not everyone is. I do not want someone flying a drone spying in my backyard. I do not fly low over anyone's house. But we do want to fly on beaches, parks, etc. I think drone users need to organize and lobby to have a say in these policies because my fear is at some future date we will just not be able to fly at all. For now I am in SA and while drones are popular I rarely see any.
I don't think the bobby on the beat is the issue its going to be RUclips video evidence ;-) Don't post illegal evidence keep it vague.
It's not going to be about policing the drones themselves, it's going to be about policing and restricting the airspaces - I'll bet money that within a few years airspaces will be increasingly classified as drone-unfriendly in legal terms. This is just "enabling" legislation for what's to come later.
The police don't bother about the law a lot of them don't know the law anyway they will just see you flying a drone so you are obviously guilty
Thank you for putting the time and effort into explaining the changes for people before they get caught out. It wasn't publicised for recreational pilots at all well. Very interesting to see the different interpretations. Myself and colleagues consider a3 to be the same as the old recreational rules. All those places you've listed we considered congested areas anyway. You've completely hit the nail on the head about it needing to be clarified and I personally see it as a good thing rather than unfair, but that comes from the definition of congested area in the ANO being hazy, the question we've all had was can somewhere like a beach be congested at 3pm but not congested at 3am. We interpreted a place people live work or do recreation didn't actually need said people to be present.
I've had further clarification from the CAA on beaches and the central element that crowds play..... 👍🏻

I would say that sums it up. If you fly in a field you have 100% chance of not being caught by anyone. Especially the old bill. If they turn up worse case fly it off or land it a mile away ;-) sorry plod I lost it.... stupid twats the lot of them.
To fish you need a licence, to ride an ‘E-scooter’ your soon need a licence, you can’t kayak without a permit, you can’t do this, you can’t do that, without someone either trying to make money or just stop you having enjoyment. So much red tape to fly a drone for 10 minutes.
Government just want us kept prisoner in our own houses or in the workplace. Soon all leisure or pleasure activities will be taxed, licensed or restricted in some way. We have a camper van that we can't take anywhere other than overpriced overcrowded sites and that was before covid.

I know it’s early days but we’re out of the EU as of the 1st too so can’t we make our own rules as a country. Seams all to rubber stamp to me. Making way for the likes of the delivery drone crowds to £££ their way in & push us enthusiasts & lighter commercial peeps out.
These "rules" are from EEC regulators and have been "rubber stamped" in the UK as "Retained EU Law". This is completely out of order as we are no longer in the EEC. Just how many other "Retained EU laws" are there. What a stitch up!
Very informative, but as with all laws how and who will police this. Yes the drone has remote ID, but with all public bodies there aren't enough staff. Just look at track and trace....

Your drone is probably tied to your phone so they will know your GPS location and when you been flying. Even your car post 2018 has a GPS locator in it now!

Just come across this video which is really well made and full of great info. I recently got my Flyer ID and Operator ID to fly my new DJI Mini 2 and I completely agree with the rules the CAA are setting out in my eyes. Not because I have a sub 250g drone but that it gives people more safety over heavy weight drones that can cause real damage if they crash land. I a m loving my Mini 2 and will continue to do so until such a time that something may change in the laws as they always change every year. I think places like schools should however have zones that are not allowed to be recorded at all full stop along with the military. airports zones etc

In other words they don't want us to fly model aircraft, They can't ban it, so they just make it so wrapped in regulations/rules that people don't bother. They did a similar thing with CB radio years ago and how many CB ers are there about nowadays, I don't know any, the new rules/regs effectively destroyed that hobby overnight, and that's the aim now, Only the commercial and very dedicated pilot, prepared to jump through hoops will continue flying. Their aim is to wipe out the hobby, and it looks like they will succeed.
@@iamrocketray CB radio is alive and kicking , you dont need a licence anymore and the old AM, USB LSB channels have been legalised , the only problem now is to much noise on the frequency in towns and citys so people go up hills and run nets , ive been back on for 2 years and its not the same as it was , but i would say its alot better. I also have a mavic air and im considering selling it and going for the mini 2. Just a shame everything has to be policed all the time.

if you fly safe, there shouldn't be much to worry about. I think a lot of people will buy the mini2 thinking they can do exactly what they want causing more rules. Just fly safe.

Will NOT happen, nobody cares for drones and neither will judges, especially when regulation and the state making money is concerned.
They wanted to get rid of drones anyway so regulation will only get more complex and expensive and will never go back to the old times.

Just in case the Uk hadn’t become stupid enough with Tories in power, we go one step further with this nonsense.
I am all for rules about people’s privacy or airports and jails etc but with zero cases of serious injury or damage so far, and not one documented risk assessment carried out to show the reasonings behind these rules, yet here we are with regulations for quads that haven’t even been made yet.
Furthermore the people in the country who will deliberately ignore the rules will carry on regardless, yet the lawful ones will continue to be forced to sell or leave what is potentially a really nice hobby as they have no place left to fly anymore.
Additionally, how our police force are expected to enforce such rulings when they cannot even manage with their current workload just goes to show you have totally out of touch such authorities are and how easily anyone with half a brain will be able to get around them. I.e. “All my footage was taken pre 2021” and “ it weighed X anyway” so unless they are carrying a set of scales and or speed gun and can catch you actually in the act, then I can’t help but feel it’s going to be a nightmare for our already overworked police force to uphold.
Also, what exactly is the £9 quid for? To file a form so that the police can just consult a list and go door to door should an incident occur?

Same as covid. The government is incapable of doing a decent job of anything. I see you like to hate the tories but the fact is they are all equally incompetent. Imagine Diane Abbot trying to write up drone regs, she can't even put her shoes on the right feet.
The bottom line is that public opinion, supported and encouraged by CAA and government, don’t want people flying drones recreationally, so the chances of CAA willingly entertaining retrospective certification of ‘legacy’ models is slim at best. They have nothing to gain by making it sensible and easy, and everything to gain by restricting our hobby. It’s a sad philosophy that has permeated all levels of government and civil service.
But when C1 classified models come out, you'll still be able to fly in towns... So these rules are great for new drones but Crap for existing drones...
I really hope they classify the old drones. They know all the specs so it is possible.
Predictable Government approach to most things they can't make money from...Corruption starts at the top and we only need to look at who benefits from this Draconian nonsense for which is a hobby, I've flown model aircraft safely for over 40 Yrs and haven't seen nonsense like this...
