- Johnny was born in 1944 and I knew him for over 5 years. He could say Mama clearly. He died March 30, 2007 and is missed terribly by all that knew him. Johnny is gone now but his buddies could use a little help from his friends. If you can help the sanctuary has a PayPal account and the email address is spsfi@aol.com

It's fascinating to me that their voices are real deep and raspy when they murmur like that but when they scream it gets real high. Kinda reminds me of Axl Rose. Super deep when he talks and really high when he sings.
That’s correct
No wonder he made a song called “Welcome to the Jungle.”
yea it doesnt sound much different from us since we can make identital chimp noices idk excacly the differences tho
It is because of their vocal tract

Johnny called everyone Mama. He was a marvelous animal and lived to 63 years of age.
Mann, r u here???
Wow. It Lived Enough To Learn Things. Did He Explored the World? Or did he lived in cages all of his life
He passed 11 years ago 😮
@@mkviis no, he actually passed away before the video was uploaded, so it was 15 years ago
Aw man
“can you say Mama-“ “*NO!*”
Johnny passed away at 63 years old. In the wild the animals fight and catch diseases. In a good sanctuary, the health care plan and a good diet is important. The licorice is sugar free.
Sorry for your loss, seemed like a good ape tho
wow that’s old for a chimp, he lived a good life

THAT VOICE IS FUCKING TERRIFYING. THE APE REVOLUTION IS UPON US
Yes 😖
APE NOT KILL APE
Ape revolution? Hell, they were brought here in ships in the 1600s.
Powerful voice, amazing
I thought they weren’t able to say words this is incredible
They can vocalize (incredibly loudly, if you ever watch videos of them fighting with each other) but don’t have the biological structures in their throats to be able to speak like we do. But they can certainly pass enough air through their throats to approximate simple words. I’d imagine the guttural, raspy sound in this video is about as close as a chimp could get to sounding human.
Mine says like 7000 words
@@peterp2153eh not true. It's not the vocal structure they lack but the brain structure. They got the right tools they just don't have the right brain to speak
@@jamesgutierrez4695I think it's both.

I dont know if 'play' was a typo or intentional but it bloody works. I dont wanna play taxes either haha
@bebopola Johnny was 63 when he passed away and he was never mean but we still did not go into the enclosure with him. A chimp could break your ribs with a huge, affectionate hug.
*"Caeser is home"*
He lived in a sanctuary. I have heard of abuse of these amazing animals and cannot imagine how anyone could do such a thing.
Well it appears he is still in a cell
I don’t know what the deal is with the place in the video, but sanctuaries usually have indoor areas where the chimps will sleep at night or where they can isolate them to check them out if they’re sick or to keep them away from other chimps if there’s some serious issues going on within the group.

Johnny sounds like he smoked for 30 years :) Seriously though its amazing
I love how she gasped and then suddenly changed accents
What a wonderful day
There is zero disparity in how awesome I thought this video was, and the type of comment thread I expected.
Well done, everyone.
It is the length of their vocal cords that does not allow human speech. Johnny just knew that Mama would get him anything he wanted as long as it was on his diet and he was allowed to have it.
Are you here man??
I wanna talk to you..
Wow...he actually said "mama". That's crazy as hell, I didn't know Chimpanzees could do that.
Their Body are the same With Human. They can Talk when they teached Enough. There was an Talking Baby Chimp too!
He would only say Mama More and flip his fingers for emphasis. We don't think he was really calling any one person Mama but did know that it got a positive response and smile.
it's Weird he looks and sounds like koba
That third 'mama' was startlingly human.

Apes together strong
Nice talking... Actually vocalizing! But have mercy on him! Chimpanzees aren't stupid, and you don't have to talk to him with that baby-talk voice. ;-)
@@anonymouscoward2491 the way their vocal cords are built it would be harder for them to talk like humans even if if they were 100% as smart as humans. I imagine they could a little but wouldn't sound as good sense thier not really meant to talk like that.
@@KentPetersonmoney they are as smart as humans, they all have the iq on average of a toddler, 44.6
@@KentPetersonmoneyIt's not the vocal cords but the larynx. The reason they can't use it properly is purely neural. Humans have much better control of the larynx, not because of its position, but because of the neural connections that connect it to the brain. Parrots don’t even have a larynx, but they have wonderful control of their speech organ, which enables them to articulate intelligible words and phrases.
Born in 1944? Man, they can live long!
Once he screams "NO",
It's all over.

He is just calling out his interest. Mama is the candy that he learned to relate to the word mama. He is not articulating but repeating the open-close combination (ma)
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
NOOOOOO!! That reminds me of such an iconic scene
this is creepy! had to switch on the lights. damn
Ofentse Modise 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
John(the chimpanzee) can easily tear apart that fence , he just doesn't know it.
Holy crap this video is old. This is actually the oldest video that I've ever seen on youtube. Fortunately it's just so cool.
you can clearly tell that chimpanzees have an aincent relationship to humans. in this video the chimpanzee has learnt to impersonate human sounds. just as we can impersonate other animal noises it suggests that the chimpanzee could have a similar mind set and vocal cord structure too a human, even though from what we can hear they have no set language and speak with their bodies like humans would, though body language is a trait most primates possess.
That’s why we are brothers to chimps.
Well, don’t worry parrots talk too, I am sure they have no intention of replacing us
A parrot can mimic words, but has no idea what it means. Not saying John necessarily knew what Mama meant. But chimps and gorilla's can both learn sign language. In that context, they know tge meaning. Look at Coco the Gorilla. Not saying they'll take over the world! Just an FYI...
Wait a minute. Why tf isnt this more popular. That boy just spoke😂😂
yes, that's because they havn't got human vocal chords. they can't form the sounds we can. but chimps were taught to communicate with a sign language and they actually managed pretty well.
i'm also doubting they knew how to train a chimp in the 50s. as far as i know people back than had large misconceptions of how to treat an animal.
I think the same. Even the apes who were trained sign language were never taught it by fluent speakers. The scientists themselves talked broken version of sign language. If the apes were taught by someone very good in it, they could be better in it too.
😮Omg! What!! I never realized this one can really talk!!!
Train it to say "ooooohhhh didn't mean to make you cry" after
He could only say "Mama" and it got him everything he wanted. He would point and show you what he wanted also. His teeth were pulled by his former owner.
WHERE CASESAR????? WANT CAESAR, CAESARRRRRRRR
Caeser : noooooooo, no no no no
Chimpanzee vocal cords are not made for human speech. They are shorter and designed for specific sounds of the chimpanzee. Johnny learned this many, many years ago and used it to his advantage. How can you resist??
I like this video smart chimp, but when I saw it all I could think of was that scene from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Cesar: NOOOOO!!!!
We got chimps speaking English before gta 6
We got chimps speaking English before GTA 4 check when the video came out
If he can say mama he can definitely say nooooooooo
Actually, the only way to communicate with them and know their thoughts is American Sign Language. Johnny could say Mama and More. He used it as a method to get something special. He knew what he was doing and we knew what he was doing and we totally indulged him if it was a sugar-free treat or drink or a blanket. Chimps vocal cords are physiologically different than ours and are not effective for normal, human speech. So, no, chimpanzees cannot "talk" as we do.
Oh my God, he knows so many words. Geek.
It was all fun until 0:16. Felt like she was talking to me, and it hit me harder than my step-dad

He probably can't live in the wild
Have any linguists ever tried to work with John or spoke with you about when John had learnt to speak a word. It is widely shown that human babies pick up language directly from a person between 6-10 months old. Good luck with all your work. Such great animals.
Could you round up, uh, Johnny Chimpo and, uh, Jerry Giraffe and Arty the Alligator and bring them in for a lineup.
i don't see how this is any more interesting than a parrot repeating words.

@paulychep This does look like a very good sanctuary. I like the spacious enclosures.
If he says "No" its over for humanity
@Joyness333 No one goes into the enclosures with the chimpanzees for safety purposes. Most of the sanctuary animals are elderly and do not have to compete for dominance as seen in the wild or large groups. They are pretty mellow. To my knowledge no studies have been done on diet and temperament. The sanctuary animals all receive primate chow and fresh fruits and vegetables.
