  • Johnny was born in 1944 and I knew him for over 5 years. He could say Mama clearly. He died March 30, 2007 and is missed terribly by all that knew him. Johnny is gone now but his buddies could use a little help from his friends. If you can help the sanctuary has a PayPal account and the email address is spsfi@aol.com

They can vocalize (incredibly loudly, if you ever watch videos of them fighting with each other) but don’t have the biological structures in their throats to be able to speak like we do. But they can certainly pass enough air through their throats to approximate simple words. I’d imagine the guttural, raspy sound in this video is about as close as a chimp could get to sounding human.

you can clearly tell that chimpanzees have an aincent relationship to humans. in this video the chimpanzee has learnt to impersonate human sounds. just as we can impersonate other animal noises it suggests that the chimpanzee could have a similar mind set and vocal cord structure too a human, even though from what we can hear they have no set language and speak with their bodies like humans would, though body language is a trait most primates possess.

yes, that's because they havn't got human vocal chords. they can't form the sounds we can. but chimps were taught to communicate with a sign language and they actually managed pretty well.
i'm also doubting they knew how to train a chimp in the 50s. as far as i know people back than had large misconceptions of how to treat an animal.

    • @Mysikrysa

Actually, the only way to communicate with them and know their thoughts is American Sign Language. Johnny could say Mama and More. He used it as a method to get something special. He knew what he was doing and we knew what he was doing and we totally indulged him if it was a sugar-free treat or drink or a blanket. Chimps vocal cords are physiologically different than ours and are not effective for normal, human speech. So, no, chimpanzees cannot "talk" as we do.

It was all fun until 0:16. Felt like she was talking to me, and it hit me harder than my step-dad

¨You're a good boy John. Love you Johny, love to keep you in this cage. You like that? You like the idea of stay behind these bars for the rest of your life? You like that concrete floor? Sure you do Johny. Love you Johny¨

Have any linguists ever tried to work with John or spoke with you about when John had learnt to speak a word. It is widely shown that human babies pick up language directly from a person between 6-10 months old. Good luck with all your work. Such great animals.

@Joyness333 No one goes into the enclosures with the chimpanzees for safety purposes. Most of the sanctuary animals are elderly and do not have to compete for dominance as seen in the wild or large groups. They are pretty mellow. To my knowledge no studies have been done on diet and temperament. The sanctuary animals all receive primate chow and fresh fruits and vegetables.
