Lol yesss you & One Month Two Cameras are both rocking Fuji medium format rangefinders 😆👏 My Nikon F100 is my workhorse 35mm camera, you will absolutely adore it! I thought the FA would be perfect for you as soon as you mentioned the F100 😁 It and the F4 are the only Nikons that give matrix metering to all AI & AIS lenses 👏 Personally I have an F4 to which I added the K split prism manual focusing screen but it's a big brick compared to an FA 🧱

I have been using my Olympus OM-D E-M1 cameras a lot in the past but this past year I revived an old Pentax ME Super film camera which gave great results and will see more action in 2023. I have a Sony a6300 with some Pergear, 7Artisans and TTArtisan manual lenses that I will be making more use of. My main kit will be an Olympus OM-DE-M5 mark ii with a 14-150mm zoom that I use for shooting live theatre, and my old E-P3 with 17mm f2.8 for street photography. 2022 was a fun photo year for me and 2023 looks promising.

I got my own Fujica GW690 this year and I love it. It's 6x9 which is the same aspect ratio as 35mm, so you should be comfortable with that.
Yes it's totes mechanical, so you'll need a light meter. But the negs are AMAZING. A 1200dpi scan on my flatbed shows great detail. The big downside is only 8 shots per roll of 120 RIP
But, there is still ONE company making the super rare 220 rolls: Shanghai GP. It's b/w only, but if you want 16 whole shots for this beast, I recommend it.
    Anyway, great video and enjoy!

The Nikon FA is a brilliant camera, I used one for many years before selling it; if you can, find the MD-15 drive as you can power the camera with 4 AA batteries. The metering system is brilliant, and I never missed a shot with it! As for 2023, I'm looking forward to working more with my Minolta Maxxum 70, and finally trying out some higher-end Mamyia and Leicas (all on loan of course). Plus exploring some new developers and films.

I will be starting to use my Hasselblad 500C again. I sold my first one many years ago and I do regret doing this. Some of the best photographs I have taken were with taken with this camera. I will be getting rid of my rangefinders as they are difficult for me to use now. I gave my nephew my most highly rated models he uses them all the time. I stick with B+W as I can develop the film myself. When I use color I tend to use digital cameras such as the a6000. I also have a few of the older digital cameras to use. I enjoyed your Post. Thank you.

I actually always had a love for photography, and this year I was able to get a camera that is actually decent! :D
I bought a Sony dsc - H70, and I'm so excited to shoot with it this year.
Taking photos has been my passion for years, and I'm so excited to start a new moment of my life and see myself get better overtime.
I'm 17 years old, just getting started in adulthood; I'm pretty sure a camera will do fine for company when I start to feel alone :')

Cool video Lucy. I'm thinking about shooting at least one roll through each camera in my collection as a kind of project for 2023. The Nikon FM2 and F2 (A) are still my "go to" sentimental favorites and will probably get the most use. Digital wise is the Fujifilm X-Pro2 shooting jpeg film simulations.

I have both the M645 1000s and the Fujica GW690. Both are nice and it's hard to pick one. The Fuji glass is great (very sharp and has a beautiful contrast), the range finder is super clear, but I 3:2 is not my favourite aspect ratio.
I picked up a Canon EF for €30 on a camera market. That camera was like a predecessor of the AE-1 and was built as a cheaper and electronic brother of the Canon F1.
At the moment I have a Pentax LX at a technician. I never shot that camera and bought it with the knowledge it needed service. So I am also definitely looking forward to shoot that camera. It's a wonderful piece of engineering.
Besides those two new camera's I am also looking forward to continue to use my medium format cameras. I love medium format and that is what I use most of the time. The most used ones are the Mamiya C330, RB67 and the Fujifilm GSW680 III.
Usually I buy every year one medium format camera, the GSW680 is the last addition and a big shout-out to that. I love the wider angle and the aspect ratio is much better. I now have covered everything from 645 to 69. So who knows, a Fuji G617 in 2023? It would be nice but damn they are too expensive.

Enjoy the F100. It is awesome but simple in use. It does everything you could wish for and if you set it up for back button focus only, it makes a quick and very intuitive portrait and street camera. I love all my Nikon cameras but the F100 is a strong contender along with my F4 and F5.

Good call on dropping the Mamiya 645 for the Fuji 690. I too simply couldn’t harmonize with the 645 and sold mine long ago. I have the Fuji GL690 with 100mm and 65mm lenses and love it, despite its weight. My most recent camera delight was taking my not-used-enough Olympus Trip 35 to Japan for 3 weeks and really enjoying using it for street and urbanscapes. Once you get used to zone focusing it’s a blast to use and produces great results as a manual point-and-shoot with an accurate battery-less selenium exposure meter. I definitely plan on using it on a more regular basis, even over my high-end cameras.

Super jealous of your Texas Leica find!
I honestly think the F100 is a great value for what you’re getting these days. I picked one up when I decided to shoot film again, and while it’s no longer my primary shooter (mostly due to size), it is still my first choice for slide film and anything else that I want more control over exposure times for.

I daily use a X-Pro1, X-Pro2, X70 and Ricoh GR2 as digital cameras for streetphotography.... i tried the newer cameras from Fuji.... but the magic from the older sensor really has gotten lost on their newer cameras... the Fuji lenses were always super sterile and lacked some character (except the 27mm and the 56mm IMO) but they're amazing cameras to adapt old M42 glass for example... my favorite for portraits is my X-Pro2 + Super Takumar 50mm

My biggest purchase this year was the digital Olympus PEN-F. I initially got it because it combined vintage aesthetics and solid specs, especially the 50/80 megapixel High Res mode, which has been great for camera scanning my negatives.
I'm slowly but surely incorporating it into my workflow with the Olympus OM-2n and the Instax SQ6, which I always use when I'm out doing jazz photography - although the Instax is almost more of a social tool than a photographic one for me. The flexibility is nice, and I can use my Zuiko 55mm 1.2 as a 110mm on the PEN-F with the 2x crop factor on the fly. It doesn't take much fiddling with exposure, contrast and grain in Lightroom to match the shots pretty well, and it allows me to get close-ups without swapping to a slower lens on the OM-2n, which would quickly become a problem in low-light situations.
I'd like to try an affordable medium format folder like an Agfa Isolette next year, since my camera scanning setup should work well with medium format too. It would be fun to try more tripod-oriented portrait work without breaking the bank!
PS. Congrats on the Texas Leica, I'm curious to hear your impressions on it 😊

I get excited to use my 'antique' 35mm film SLR cameras: Nikon F, Nikon FM, Nikkormat FT2, Nikon FG, Pentax Spotmatic. Just so much fun to use and an immersive experience in photography. I have a digital camera: Fujifilm X100F it is a very handy easy to carry 'travel camera' and no denying the flexibility of the built-in film simulations, filters, metering pattern options, along with it's other multitude of features. But when I really want to be involved in the photographic experience I reach for one of my film SLR's. The Nikon FA would be a great film SLR to get..the matrix metering was quite an advancement for the day. Prices for good used examples climbing.

The Nikon AF cameras from the 90s are remarkable bargains nowadays. I had a number of MF Nikons in the 70s and 80s (F, FTn, Nikkormat, FM2, FE2, FG, FM etc), but the best Nikon I've ever owned was my 8008s (801s); which is the only Nikon film camera I have left. It can be had ridiculously cheap today, as can its immediate successor, the N90. I took that 8008s on many a fam trip, as a travel journalist. Hundreds of published shots from that camera.

Not that you asked but I'd be careful with the FA. I thought the same as you before I got it, that it's the perfect camera for me. But I found the metering was just not accurate enough, and since there is no AE lock it's center weighted mode is useless. I sold it and got a FE2 instead which is perfect. Aperture priority, center weighted meter with AE lock, TTL flash, fast shutter, all while looking and feeling like a mechanical camera from the 70's.

It's April 2024. I'm going to shoot a few rolls of film this year, probably all on Canon: A-1, FTb, EOS 650. But I'll shoot mostly digital for all the reason expressed here. I suspect the cameras I'll use most are these: Canon 5D, 70D, and R50; Lumix G5; Nikon D40X. I'm working hard to resist buying any more camera gear for a while.

  • @Dahrenhorst
    @Dahrenhorst Год назад +1

Whoa, that's many cameras to use next year. I'm coming from quite a different angle. I don't change my cameras very often, actually quite rarely, and I very seldom shoot 35mm or digital, I shoot mostly large format and frequently medium format. There are two cameras on my shelf, which I haven't used yet and want to shoot next year, to have done that at least once: a Werra IV and an Exakta Varex IIb. Besides that I have another around 20 or 30 medium format cameras at home which I have to try out some time, most of them I have to repair first, though.
I'm a wheelchair photographer (not that I take pictures of wheelchairs, I'm sitting in one😉). That has the advantage, that I can bring lots of equipment with me, when I'm out for a photography trip. The cameras I use in 2023 will be the same I'm using in 2022:
Left armrest bag: 2 Kodak 3-A (with coupled rangefinder, Optimo Shutter and Tessar lens) modified for 120 film, thus providing 6x14cm negatives. One is loaded with color film and the other with b&w film. I use those for architecture, cityscapes and full body portraits.
Right armrest bag: 2 Pentacon Six cameras, one with the 50mm Flektogon and b&w film, and the other with the 120mm Biometar and color film. Sometimes I switch the lenses. I use them when I want to use the wide angle or telephoto angle lenses, and between those, I use the b&w and Flektogon combo by far the most.
Back bag: A 5x7" large format camera with tripod and 10 film-holders loaded with photographic paper (mostly 40 years old Agfa Brovira) for reverse positives. With this I take portraits from strangers I meet on the street. This is somewhat my main camera and I'm done with my trip, when the film-holders are used up. Also in the bag is a Moskva-5 loaded with b&w film for 6x9cm format negatives (mostly architecture and cityscapes) and a Fuji GS645 Pro 6x4.5cm with color film, the latter the camera of choice when I need perfectly sharp color pictures (I'm usually not out for perfectly sharp).
In my lap: I have more than a dozen TLRs, and one of those TLRs is in my lap for classic candid street photography. Mainly I use a Voigtländer Brillant S with the Heliar lens (it's by far the smallest and most lightweight TLR I have and has the brightest viewfinder of all), an Olympus Flex with the 2.8 F.Zuiko (the TLR with the best lens), or my Koniflex with its five Element Heliar-type lens (something like a combination of the Voigtländer and the Olympus). The Voigtländer is always, the other are mostly loaded with b&w film.
In my trousers' or jacket's pocket I additionally have an Olympus TG-6, just in case. In the very rare occasion I want to bring a 35mm camera, there is an Olympus OM-1 with an array of lenses sitting at home waiting for its next job. When I decided to get rid of all my 35mm SLRs, I kept this one, even over a Leica R6. To me, it's - together with its lenses - my favorite SLR ever, no other looks better, feels better, works smoother or has a better viewfinder (if the prism is ok or already refurbished, and maybe with the exception of the Leicaflex SL), and few other brands have lenses which are mechanically and optically on the same level as its Zuikos.
And when I'm not out with my wheelchair, I have an 11x14 large format camera which I use for paper reverse positive 1:1 close up face portraits (think Martin Schoeller, just even closer), again mostly on 40 years old Agfa Brovira, in my little home studio and take such portraits of family, friends and invited guests.
Also now almost exclusively at home is my digital Olympus Pen-F, which I mostly use to "scan" my negatives and pictures with the 30mm macro lens and its high res mode.

Brilliant video! Enjoy hearing your take on cameras and your specific views. I have to agree the film and development cost is crazy. Over the last 2 years I managed to pick up a good amount of film cameras, digi cams and other photo related objects at local thrift stores. The 3 cameras I am going to be using this winter and most likely next year ( digital) Pentax KP, Q and Mx-1 as for film, I really enjoy the point and shoot cameras and have several in my collections. I have a bit of hesitance with range finders too, But with the cost of film, just not worth doing it as of right now.

As far as I'm concerned, the Fuji 6x9 is the Tokyo Leica. I have a Mamiya m645 1000s that I'll be using a conversion kit with to shoot 35mm with sprockets. I have a Fuji GA 645 Pro and a Pentax 6x7 (best shutter sound ever). For 35mm I mainly use a Canon A-1, Olympus OM-1 or Canon QL25. For compacts I use a Canon Prima Tele an Olympus Mju 1 and a Mju Zoom panorama. Just one digicam - Fuji Finepix A600. I do shoot a lot with a Canon EOS R and RF lenses. I keep a cute little Leica C in my glovebox, mainly for street photography. I used to have a couple of 110 cameras as well - Minolta Weathermatic A and Agfamatic 8000 sensor, but I sold them as I don't intend to ever shoot 110 again.

Speaking of the QL17, I will probably be selling mine now that I have the P since it feels a little redundant. I do love that camera and the quality of images it takes though. And yes, the shutter is distressingly quiet. I legit thought there was something wrong with mine when I first got it. 😅

Adding a Texas Leica to my collection is on my bucket list, which makes sense, as I love rangefinders. But, they are rarely put up for sale around here - and when they are, they are far too expensive.
I don't have an F100, but I do have both an F4 and F90X (and an F50 and N60) , and Nikon simply knew what they were doing when they made their 35mm SLR cameras - and DSLR cameras as well.
    So nice going!
I'm looking forward to shooting withmy Leica gear and my Mamiya 645 Pro more in the new year (when the sunlight returns) but also digicams. I've just ordered a Sigma DP1 Merrill with a Foveon sensor, and I can't wait to see how it renders color. I also picked up the last DSLR Minolta ever made - before Sony took over (as a Minolta fan, I had to), and I look forward to testing that old DSLR a lot, when the light returns.

Before the digital camera's came I always shoot with Canon's, so when the digital errar began I bought Canon,'s. I own a lot of Canon's full frame and so on. Lucy, you have some interesting videos on film photography. I have shot film for many years, and I have to wonder why some people on RUclips refer to the Canon A1 or AE1 or Nikon auto SLRs for beginners. A true beginner camera should have a fully manual approach for f stop and shutter speed, such as Pentax Spotmatic SPII (and there are plenty available at low cost or Nikon FM2 which uses LEDs in the viewfinder to guide the f stop and shutter speed). Beginners are better off learning on a fully manual camera to appreciate the effect that adjusting the f stop and shutter speed can give you. You might already have a Pentax Spotmatic, and I think you should show how to use it.

@@LucyLumen Sadly, he died before the digital revolution, and so far, I never have been able to find the picture because as far as I know it was never on the net. It was a picture of the Taj Mahal. My friend's last name was Moyer and first name James, but I am afraid that he has been relegated to obscurity for other reasons as well. I saw the photo just after it was printed many years ago but there was only one print made and that was for a royal family whose name I was not allowed to know. My understanding was that they were to get the negative as well. Not only was it a beautiful picture but there was a distant figure in the photograph which had something to do with the photo's eventual ownership. It was all a bit mysterious, and I am not sure how much he was paid but he assured me that he would never have to work again. My friend lived for 2 more years but was tight lipped about further details.

Nice collection. As far as early to mid 00s digicams go if you want that filmic look, pick up a Fuji Finepix with the SuperCCD sensor. It's the closest look to film I have ever seen, especially if you get a model like the F70EXR, one of the first to get the film simulations like Provia, Velvia and Astia. I picked one up recently for $45 but prices are going way up on them. I have an extensive list on which Fuji cameras have a version of that sensor if you want it. Also look at the early to mid 00s Panasonic Lumix cameras. They are super cheap still and produce some great photos. I really like the DMC FZ8 I got recently in a pawn shop for $30. I would also include the Nikon Coolpix P series cameras which were the top of the line. I picked up a P7100 last year for like $50 and it's great. Has more pro features on it than the lower end models, even has an ND filter built in. Just a few ideas.

What I'm really interested in is the fact that Pentax are looking at making brand new film cameras!!! I don't know if they'll be coming out next year, but I hope they go ahead with it and it's a success. I'd be really interested in getting one!! I'd love to get a Texas Leica, but they're a bit on the expensive side. Great for portraiture, though. The 6x9 negatives really lend their size to getting really great portraits. If you ever get down to Melbourne, you want to go do a street session with Hashem and get him to give you some pointers on street. I'm just trying to think of someone around the Brissie/Coast way but I can't think of anyone offhand. Might be able to with a little bit of thought about it, though. Depending on where you are, street photography can either be a relatively pleasant experience, or one that's rather stressful and confronting. It's a bit of the latter up here. Some of the yobbos around town can get in your face at times and you have to be careful depending on when and where you decide to go out and shoot. Best not to do it alone, especially at night.
