- Today the Angry Video Game Nerd reviews Dark Castle for the Sega Genesis. This game was released in 1991 by Electronic Arts and swiftly panned by critics and gamers alike. It stars a Peter Pan-like character that appears in the entrance of a castle without any prior explanation or storyline. There are multiple doors to enter, but they're each as much of a mystery as the first. Upon entering a door, the game switches abruptly to a side-scroller which features even worse graphics than the introduction. In addition to the horrid graphics, the game plays a repetitive loop of ominous piano music which can only be deactivated with careful timing at the dawn of the game. These issues are considered petty when compared to the gameplay and controls that turn out to be a complete mess. The Nerd struggles with awkward button combinations and unresponsiveness to complete the simplest of tasks like ducking and throwing items. Watch as the Nerd plays, in his opinion, the worst Sega Genesis game he ever has.

This has got to be one of the best AVGN videos. The editing, writing, pacing...everything is perfect. I always come back to this episode.
This is AVGN gold standard. I also love the Tiger Electronics one, the Action 52, and the most recent of the bunch, The Town with no Name (or Town with no Name). No overacting and the writing seems perfect.

So I did some research and discovered that this was actually a port of a game for Macintosh. Apparently in the original Mac version not only did the main character not get dizzy as easily and as often, but throwing the rock was done with the mouse, which explains why it’s so clunky on console.
It's actually a Mac classic.
That explains a lot. I’ve never owned a Mac myself so I never really heard about it.
I had this on MS-DOS and you could press the number pad keys to quick aim. I still never beat it.

The "DARK CASTLE ON CD-I" part is probably one of AVGNs greatest moments, up there with when he punches Bugs Bunny out of nowhere, or the search for "ass" in the King James Bible on Gameboy.

Well, actually it kinda is. Granted, they could've not ported it, but it was a popular title on the PC and SEGA obviously wanted to bring on as many popular properties to their system to compete with Nintendo. The game isn't fundamentally broken or anything, it was just designed for an entirely different system and was outdated at that point... EA probably could've done more to update the game to match the Genesis' strengths and capabilities, but it's not like it was uncommon in those days for system to PC ports to not always be optimized. Hell, that's an issue we still have today and Dark Castle was ported in the early 90s lol.
My point is, saying "well, it IS an EA game" doesn't really ring true as an intended insulting accusation. EA actually made some really great Genesis games and didn't have the reputation then that they do now. And again, it comes down to the fact that EA didn't even make this game, they just ported it, and fundamentally what you were getting was a VERY similar rendition of a popular, if outdated, PC port for your genesis.

Played the hell out of this game on the family Mac when I was a kid, and loved it. It had quirks in its movement mechanics, but I got pretty good at it. Don't know how it plays on a console given how it's designed for the mouse to control where you aim, but I liked it on the computer. The console port seems to be pretty broken by comparison.

well, to be fair it was a port of an 86 PC game; and one of the head developers wasn't even out of college yet. That doesn't excuse the pointless ports to non PC systems though.

Antonio Oyarzun Dark Castle was originally a pretty good Mac game with awesome sound for 1986, these ports were FUCKING HORRIBLE. The mac keyboard was meant for this game
