Risk vs. Reward? 2 mile detour vs. Assessing situation and seeing road grade is smooth and No Train approaching. Worth the self assessed risked Reward.
@@michaeldomansky8497, please understand: Common Sense, Risk vs. Reward. You can see that there are Road Closed signs. You can take the 2+ mile journey at the direction of those signs. OR you can assess a situation and take a calculated risk and potentially be rewarded for thinking and ascertaining, rather than blindly following.
@@AuroraRancher I doubt anyone made any such calculations. I believe most of these are people who are so fixed in their thinking that they panic at the slightest change to their routine. BLINDLY following their known route and incapable of handling the detour. Besides, without knowing what the dangers are and why the road is closed they are incapable of assessing the risk vs. rewards. I know of people who were killed when they ignored road closed signs because the dangers are not always readily apparent. This time, they got lucky, next time, maybe not so much. So by my calculations, my life is never worth a two mile detour. So I don't freak-out when I see a road closed sign, I am smart enough and flexible enough to figure out a detour.
Most of the time these are up when the pavement is cooling...or when concrete is drying. Thanks to these asses the road is ruined before the repaving is complete. There is always a reason even if you don't know why.
Having spent 30+ years doing underground utility work on public roadways, I have personally seen more gross ignorance among drivers than you would think possible. That was the scariest part of the job.
As glad as I am that nobody got hurt trying to beat any of the trains, I am disappointed that no dummies got stuck in a hole from ignoring the road closed signs.👍
There are a couple of railroad crossings in my area that divide 4-way intersections, but those roads aren't heavily used and are featured on Virtual Railfan Did you or anyone else try to call local or railroad police to stop people from doing such? 5:28 that DC to AC unit has a nice horn! 12:34 nice catch of that SD45-2!
I don't know man. I just looked at a google map display of this town. Going around that one tiny intersection looked like it would take people more than 2 miles out of their way just to avoid a section 25 feet long. I don't know man.
If it's closed, it's closed for a reason. Where I live, there are 4 crossings in less than 2 miles. But when a gate stays down too long, people drive and it instead of going to another crossing. I've actually had people yell at me, because I was turning sound to go to the next crossing, and they had to wait to illegally go around the downed gate.
In my area, there have been several times when I followed the road closed/detour signs and it turns out the work was done, the signs weren't taken down and all I did was waste my time taking the detour. The fault lies with the workers not barricading the roadway completely.
True story - about two months ago, I was coming home from work and stopped behind a few other vehicles at a crossing without a gate - I think the track belongs to Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern - and the driver at the front of the line decided to sneak across before the train arrived. Once the train passed, the rest of us who patiently waited were treated to the sight of the not-patient car PULLED OVER by a police officer! Right time, right place; I wish that happened every time.
Not exactly related to a train crossing, but I've seen at an intersection in a residential neighborhood where construction completely closed and blocked a residential side street at the intersection, people were driving across the front lawns of the houses on the corners to go around the barricades and not have to turn around and go out the long way... Seriously. And they couldn't even hide the evidence because there was a foot of snow on the ground, so they left tracks behind. The sense of entitlement in many of today's drivers is crazy.....
Would take about a mile for those double stacks to pull up, and the route obviously handles plenty of traffic. Good case for an overpass I would imagine. No way those signs were going to stop many cars without a guard on duty!
That might be the busiest intersection on the railroad line in the city for traffic with those road closed signs up for anything. Sometimes most people disobey on road closures and railroad safety for a train and crossing the tracks without notice and need to learn what to do when you approaching the railroad crossings and watch for road closures for pavement and construction on that location. Great video here. I really enjoy watching trains and railroad crossings as a railroad spotter for spotting trains and railroad crossings. Thank you. Great video recording.
I think this is where you filmed two trains racing! Agreed that the road dept. did a lousy job of "closing off" that road!! Some Jersey Barriers would have stopped them!
The quality of your videos is outstanding, man. My favorite railfanning channel on RUclips for sure. if you don't mind me asking, what's your camera setup?
I was thinking "someones moved some signs", The gaps are a bit wrong. There was a similar one in a suburb near where I live they ended up under-passing it about 10 years ago, mind you the blue prints were dated from the mid 1960's
**generic comment about drivers ignoring warning signs** I think the best part is when the hi-railer came to take the signs away. Really puts the size of the train in perspective.
Good video man. In my previous job, all I dealt with was ignorant drivers and this video proves that fact. Like some of the other people who have commented said, that crossing could have more done to it, either having law enforcement or having flaggers watching that crossing for the duration it was closed for; personally I was cringing through the entire video waiting for something to happen. Good work.
Those barriers are terrible, in my experience you have to physically block the road (or have a cop there) to actually stop 100% of drivers. Even then I've seen people move cones out of the way so they can get past.
In fairness, how long were those signs just standing there? In my town, crews like to put the road closure signs up at 8AM, then leave for two days, then come back and get to work.
Long ago I learned that you had to button down a closed road completely with no gaps as there was always someone (including some cops) who would ignore barricades and signs if they saw a possible way around.
This makes me think of the “Work Zone” with no workers in view. How long would you wait at a red light if it didn’t change? Look listen and proceed with caution!
We deal with this type of stuff every day, and it looks like some moved the Barricade so they can go around them, that is a big fine for going around them.
I'm sure somewhere some railroad employee's head just exploded watching this video. I guess they need to start using concrete K rails to block the crossings entirely when they are closed.
In my other HO scale railroad layout, I had a quad crossing signal set on a three point intersection. The only thing different is the bells(WCH E-Bells) ringed during the whole duration of the actuation, according to a temporary authority ordered by INDOT/Public Service Commission. That signal configuration was based on a crossing located on the CN(ex-GTW) in Saint Joseph county, Indiana.
@@haraldgriefbacon1373 Calm down bacon-boy; I've witnessed many drivers in California exhibit this level of stupidity behind the wheel. My comment isn't based upon stereotypes, it's based on observation, which makes it comedic, grounded in reality.
One time I was driving through the back roads coming home from my grandma’s house(at least her old house, since she lives in a new one now) and there are a couple railroad crossings out there that the freight trains of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad use, and one time there was one coming and my dad and I did the right thing at stopped before the line before the gates. But there were several idiots who didn’t want to wait for a long train like that, so once part of it was through, one person decided to drive over the tracks in his 4x4 Jeep Cherokee somehow not knowing that he could get stuck and hit by another train
Neat footage, though really there isn't much wrong with going around those signs. It's a small town, and word travels quick. If the locals knew the work was done and the gates still went down, there's really no reason to add 2 miles to your commute. Especially if what you need is right on the other side of the tracks! If this were a more populous area or there was something wrong with the gates I would agree that they were being idiots, but as it stands I don't think they did anything wrong.
nono... people are stupid when they see "RAIL ROAD CROSSING". I'm talking going around closed gates, jumping lights, racing a speeding train, and now this... they would obey it if it WASN'T at an RXR
I can understand people's frustration--I'm in a small town that has one main road through it that also intersects tracks. The only other way to cross the tracks is about a mile away, and that's it unless you want to drive out into the country or the next town over. When one of the crossings was being worked on, it had a major effect on traffic flow. However, we were also notified well beforehand of what construction was going to be performed, what roads were going to be affected, and a general timetable. There is no excuse to ignore "Road Closed" signs, people just need to plan accordingly.
I did construction for a long time...if you leave an opening big enough for a vehicle, they will go through it.

Not a good idea. #1, tires are not cheap to replace; #2, Flat tires could make a bad situation worse; #3 (also see #1), insurance won't cover the replacement cost unless a wreck is involved; #4, tacks/nails/spikes/etc. could be shot out by wheels, potentially injuring nearby pedestrians; #6, contractors, and the city or county could be subjected to liability lawsuits. There are probably other reasons which do not immediately come to mind.
Or a sniper in the trees.
Risk vs. Reward?
2 mile detour vs. Assessing situation and seeing road grade is smooth and No Train approaching. Worth the self assessed risked Reward.
Tony Vowels, could have been a sink hole or underground void condition .... Follow posted signs!
@@AuroraRancher ...thereby potentially ruining the fresh road surface... no wonder American roads are in such poor condition.
Man, an unmarked or two would've made quota in an hour.
Awesome great catch this would be a cops paradise in ticket writing and arrest LOL
Erik Max Q Mcc and get lots of money
Having spent 30+ years doing underground utility work on public roadways, I have personally seen more gross ignorance among drivers than you would think possible. That was the scariest part of the job.
As glad as I am that nobody got hurt trying to beat any of the trains, I am disappointed that no dummies got stuck in a hole from ignoring the road closed signs.👍
You do a great job with your videos, probably the best train channel on youtube. I've been watching for some 8 yrs now. Cheers !
Hey, thank you Joe Wlos! That really means a lot!!!
There are a couple of railroad crossings in my area that divide 4-way intersections, but those roads aren't heavily used and are featured on Virtual Railfan
Did you or anyone else try to call local or railroad police to stop people from doing such?
5:28 that DC to AC unit has a nice horn!
12:34 nice catch of that SD45-2!
I don't know man. I just looked at a google map display of this town. Going around that one tiny intersection looked like it would take people more than 2 miles out of their way just to avoid a section 25 feet long. I don't know man.
Doesn't matter, it's illegal.
@@DTGee64 illegal smeelegal... who gives a fuck.
What special pavement did they use that requires a 24 hour road closure?
If it's closed, it's closed for a reason. Where I live, there are 4 crossings in less than 2 miles. But when a gate stays down too long, people drive and it instead of going to another crossing. I've actually had people yell at me, because I was turning sound to go to the next crossing, and they had to wait to illegally go around the downed gate.
2 miles is nothing in a car
In my area, there have been several times when I followed the road closed/detour signs and it turns out the work was done, the signs weren't taken down and all I did was waste my time taking the detour. The fault lies with the workers not barricading the roadway completely.
Drivers can be sheep. What they see another car doing they will follow, safety be dammed.
Just how FAST are these trains moving?! Those locomotives are HUGE & the rail cars are a blur. I would look for a detour!
Thank You! ☮︎
I don't see the reason for this crossing to be closed!
of course you don't
They repaved the railroad crossing and the pavement was still setting.
Do you walk on wet cement if a sign says keep off? Asphalt needs time to cool down and set up before traffic is allowed on it.
@@cdarting91 -- If the concrete was still wet they should have completely blocked the road.
@@gregb6469 It was pavement. People have bigger issues if they can't figure out what CLOSED ROAD means. lol
What kind of roadwork was being done? And why were railroad workers handling the signs instead of DOT?
Because it was railroad property not department of transportation. It’s basically private property.
I really like that map that you added at the two minute area
I can tell you had so much fun putting this one together :-)
Haha I did, most definitely a for-fun, humor type of video for once.
Central Penn Rail Can you plz film more on NS Reading Line and in Hamburg and Walnutport
So apparently driver will go around any barrier whether the railroad crossing barrier or a construction barrier
If there’s anything I’ve learned from working in a grocery store, it’s that people NEVER read signs, no matter how large you make the text.
If you are going to close a street, then close the street. All you did was suggest. Make a decision.
This spot is a perfect location for a Grade separation
I think this is where you filmed two trains racing! Agreed that the road dept. did a lousy job of "closing off" that road!! Some Jersey Barriers would have stopped them!
This is the same crossing, but it got new signals, lights and gates since I filmed that video.
not a very good barricade setup, but thats besides the point.
actually, that is the point...if the barricade was a full barricade, drivers wouldn't be able to go through.
The road is closed because they were laying down fresh asphalt and it has to have time to cure and solidify.
People are just asking for death wishes what if the white truck got stuck between to signs I swear some people are so inpatient and stupid
There so impatient they will risk their life for it.
May all be blessed with comfort, abundance, confidence, love, freedom, safety, and joy💖
The quality of your videos is outstanding, man. My favorite railfanning channel on RUclips for sure. if you don't mind me asking, what's your camera setup?

@@CentralPennRailProductions Thanks!
Great video! Still a shame that the classic cantilevers that were there are long gone.
if the road is closed don't go around the road closed signs ! Road wasn't closed down good enough !🚧🚧🚧🚧
Oh yeah and they came flying right on through!
Seems like the contractors are wanting their work damaged. Such a halfassed barricade.
Good work.
If they would have taken the time to set up the barriers right, nobody would be going through
Would have been funny, if that hi rail truck had it's passenger door open !!!😀
Those barriers are terrible, in my experience you have to physically block the road (or have a cop there) to actually stop 100% of drivers. Even then I've seen people move cones out of the way so they can get past.
"and dangerously driving across an active 4-Way railroad crossing" no danger at all
That looks like a pretty busy road. Maybe the people that closed it in the first place need to come up with a better idea
I'm not going to detour 2 miles when my house is right there. Generally when a road is closed it still allows local traffic.
In fairness, how long were those signs just standing there? In my town, crews like to put the road closure signs up at 8AM, then leave for two days, then come back and get to work.
Don't close the road until you're ready to do the work ! You see it all the time, lane closures for no reason!
The work had already been started and mostly done. They had just repaved the railroad crossing and the new pavement was still curing.
@@cdarting91 get a life Chris
Long ago I learned that you had to button down a closed road completely with no gaps as there was always someone (including some cops) who would ignore barricades and signs if they saw a possible way around.
Park a police car blocking the crossing, with lights and siren going. That would have stopped almost half.
Nah....Those signs are there ,just to give the sign people something to do !!!! LOL
This makes me think of the “Work Zone” with no workers in view. How long would you wait at a red light if it didn’t change? Look listen and proceed with caution!
“Long line of traffic.” Four cars lol
I saw that same train with 4260 leading that same day at bound brook
We deal with this type of stuff every day, and it looks like some moved the Barricade so they can go around them, that is a big fine for going around them.
This is Pennsylvania, what did you expect? lol
A very true statement! Statistically the worst in the nation
Same in Texas
New Jersey as well.
Also happens in Kentucky!
Same as every state in the nation.
A train never loses and the driver gets a free ride
Some people have nothing better to do all day then complain about what other people do.
If a train had passed through and hit one of those cars, somebody would have tried to sue. Even though the sign says road closed. Wow!!!
Why did they close the crossing for?
They repave the road road crossing, and the pavement was still setting up.
Chris Darting Ahh ok I see and thank you for the response!
Gosh, I feel somewhat cheated of the joy that it would've brought seeing somebody trying to argue with a train.
It's all about me mentality
I'm sure somewhere some railroad employee's head just exploded watching this video. I guess they need to start using concrete K rails to block the crossings entirely when they are closed.
It's just like when someone gets close to a railroad crossing their IQ's just go down
In my other HO scale railroad layout, I had a quad crossing signal set on a three point intersection.
If I didn't know any better I would have thought this was somewhere in California.

Thanks for the heads up
One time I was driving through the back roads coming home from my grandma’s house(at least her old house, since she lives in a new one now) and there are a couple railroad crossings out there that the freight trains of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad use, and one time there was one coming and my dad and I did the right thing at stopped before the line before the gates. But there were several idiots who didn’t want to wait for a long train like that, so once part of it was through, one person decided to drive over the tracks in his 4x4 Jeep Cherokee somehow not knowing that he could get stuck and hit by another train
It clearly says the Road CLOSED
Not clear enough for a lot of people.
I seen 40-50 drivers pass thru a flood barricade in my neighborhood. Even a pizza boy
In my area, there have been several times when the signs were up past the point of the work being done.
Stupidity runs deep with these people. The signs clearly indicates road closed and yet people continue crossing the tracks. It also lazy driving.
Do you open doors on airplanes?
The pavement has to set
@@cas3909 Actually, yes. It is the only way to exit the aircraft.
Why is the road closed? Nothing worse than a road closed for no reason.
If you watched it you'd know that there was a resurfacing job done
nono... people are stupid when they see "RAIL ROAD CROSSING". I'm talking going around closed gates, jumping lights, racing a speeding train, and now this... they would obey it if it WASN'T at an RXR
Just ask the people that drive past closed road signs when the roads are flooded. Lol
Why not actually “close” the road and don’t leave openings like that? Would it also hurt to put “fresh paved” so they know why it’s closed?
Damn if they are going to be inconvenienced... So foolish....
So, why are there so many gaps for the drivers to drive through?
Because a sign that says road closed does not mean go ahead anyway.
May I use this video for a sparta remix of mine? I will give you credit.
