Switching Railroad Cars, Entire Job, Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET

- Complete railroad switching job. Switching & shunting railroad cars on Cincinnati Eastern Railroad in Sardinia, Ohio. CCET had to switch out some covered hoppers from a long string of railroad cars on the Sardinia Holdout siding. They were taking all the cars except the David J Joseph ( DJJ ) cars to Winchester Ohio to be loaded with grain. Winchester Ag Services does not want these cars anymore for some reason. This video shows them having to sort out the mixed up cars and then finally crossing Tri County Hiway near Macon Ohio. Not many videos show the whole switching maneuvers but this one does. The locomotives are a General Electric B36-7 recently purchased from TTI Railroad of Paris Kentucky and an EMD GP49 purchased from Alaska Railroad back in 2014. Filmed April 2, 2019. With the recents events going on in America it has made it a little more difficult to video. Some of the trains that I planned on recording have been cancelled. Also, coal production keeps declining and I have had bad luck recording coal trains on branches in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia. I spent 3 days at Natural Tunnel, Virginia and no trains went through in daylight. I spent 2 days at West Brownsville, Pennsylvania with the same results. I'm going to West Virginia later this month. I never run out of Jaw Tooth videos to watch. Why? Because there's more! There always is.
Take this train and shove it! I've watched this one 3 or 4 times now, I like that you are close enough to the tracks, as well as there not being trees blocking your view, that you can catch all the action each time they switch, you can see EVERYTHING that happens, that was cool, and when they made a mistake somebody said, "You know they're filming you."
I like how you professionally used the background trees to accent the smoke from the first engine. It's also neat how this railroad can take larger railroad castoffs (the engines) and what appears to be an ex-Duke pickup and the rail lines abandoned by CSX or NS and make it all work, serve the customers and still make money. Plus they put the people who work for them in a money paying job. Then they gave you and me some railroading to watch. That's the American way!
It's great to see those old Locomotives still earning their keep. Great catch
Technology a plus using radios back before my time they did that with lanterns. Good filming!
Love the old Delaware and Hudson hopper car! Nice!!!
Nice to see they left old light tower
Great video showing the delivery process via rail. They do that here at the Purina Dog food plant, the trains and dispatcher say on the radio Ok to go feed the dogs!
@Wide World Of Trains: It’s funny you say “via rail” in which I know what you meant but here in Canada our passenger train service company is called,”VIA Rail” in which i’m sure you’ve heard of & obviously in the States you have “AM/Trak”. ~ Cheers from Canada.
@@sudsysutherland359 Oh yea LOL yes Ive known about VIA Rail passenger service in Canada for many years. I have watched Canadian TV and some news since the 70's since we get those channels here near Buffalo and used to get them w a rooftop antenna before cable was around
@@sudsysutherland359 My favorite TV sports show was on Global TV I think it was called sportsline w hosts Jim Tatti and Mark Hebshire, they were on every weeknight at 11:30 this was during the 80's
man, that was a ton of switching cars.
My bonafides: worked the local on the Hearne sub [SP] for years. The following is NOT meant as criticism, but only as an observation. For the purposes of identification, we will denote pickup guy, since he arrived in a pickup, and switch guy. I was taught when the train is backing up, you mount the stirrup with your right foot. When the train is moving forward, you mount with the left. Pickup guy takes a couple of running steps and mounts with his left foot when the train is backing up. He swings his right leg out when mounting. PUG also runs behind the train moving forward to open the knuckle. PUG makes the wrong cut in the siding thus initiating a repeat move. Some of PUG's instructions to the engineer results in jarring coupling of cars.
Switch guy makes one wrong move that I could see and that's trying to catch the cutlever to open the knuckle as the train is moving by him.
While the moves can be considered unsafe, and I suspect there's some old railroad video about safety, everyone does it their own way. As for me, I made a few wrongs moves as a newbie, but that's another story.
One day someone will be asking how railroads worked in 2019, and your video will still be a source of knowledge. And me personally, I like to see the variety of cars, as too many videos end once the locomotives go past. Soo Line, Rio Grande, Delaware & Hudson, and Union Pacific stood out, so a 2019 era modeller can include these cars with patches. I even saw a full B&M blue car in Chicago two years ago...
Are they attempting to put more modern signalling on that subdivision? I see what appears to be modern signal heads on a straight mast (with protective caging for climbers) on the left side (as the camera faces the crossing) and on the far side of the tracks. Also visible at times are the older position-style signal head (seen off to the distant right), as well as a very tall twin-headed mast with lots of rust on it to the extreme left on the close side of the tracks.
Hello nice video it really shows the amount of effort it takes to switch cars locally or kicking cars in the yard. This job is not always easy and can kill you if safety procedures aren't followed. Have a nice day and keep up the good work.
Some of that rolling stock should stop by the paint shop.😎👌👍
Great video of the task of fluffing out the needed cars. Very enjoyable. As the party album from 2011 told listeners & this crew you filmed, "Every day I'm Shufflin' ". Thanks for taking on the damp spring air. I feel like I should have Ubered you a cup of coffee from Speedway.
Those ole Alaskan GP39s are really neat, it’s a shame the railroad won’t repaint their engines in its own livery. Also the B36 has a perfect horn, the new engines don’t sound to good because they don’t have a manual valve.
I love hearing that B36 horn. When I hear that I always head to the railroad as long as it is heading east since that is when it is leading.

BEST SWITCHING VIDEO EVER!
Nice to see what it is that causes those clang-bang sounds that I hear coming from my local classification yard day in and day out.
Hi Brian: Yes I enjoyed the video, my only experience with switching was in the early fifties in Douglas Az, all gone now. I remember laying bed in the early morning and hearing the SP switchers, steam, shunting cars making trains for transit to El Paso or points west. Great sounds. Thanks for this video, good one. Edward
Great video sir, nice to see the old road names still peeking through the rust. Thanks for taking the time to do this!!!
You took some interesting footage. Drinking my coffee and enjoying some trains. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 🚂 Thanks for the share.
Yet another superb video Brian -the weathering boys will have a field day with those older cars -multiple owners -all painted or faded out -what a treat! I don't know what was ticking on the Gp -maybe the air compressor??? Your on a roll at the minute -one after another superb filming job! Keep them coming please!!
That GP49 was retired from the Alaska Railroad sometime in 2004-2005, and was owned by a leasing company before the CCET purchased it.
Oh okay. Thanks!
Excellent video JT! Glad to see that Ex. Seaboard engine getting a second chance.
Nice Delaware & Hudson hopper, got a smile from this Schenectady man!
Glad to hear it!
27:35 anyone notice the Rio Grande hopper? Incredible! Jaw Tooth, great work. I switch rail cars for a living, and I barely come across anything worth while. Good to see some live action!
There was also an ex-Delaware and Hudson hopper that visited the line quite often around this time.
Reminds me of when I worked down at P&G for RailServe. The cars we needed were always mixed around and had to do this type of back and fourth switching. Was fun though.
I have one video of Railserve. I always wonder how the cars get mixed up so much. Whenever I watch long mixed freight trains I wonder how the cars got all mixed up. Someone has to unmix them at some point. That would have been a cool job working for Railserve. I have a few of their locos in my videos as intros and outros.
@@JawTooth I always wondered how the cars get mixed up as well. I recall watching long coal drags on L&N CC Line back in the 1970s. Almost all hoppers had the L&N reporting mark but somehow an odd Monon or Clinchfield hopper would get into the mix. I always wondered how that happened.
Hay Jawtooth finally got Sardena crossing fixed😁👍
That was a lot of switching. Good job!
Lots of shuffling.Thanks for sharing.
Great video Brian! Early in the video that old pole to the left of the road that has the double pointed ends on top looks like it used to have semaphore signals. The old Monon over here has semaphores on those same kind of pointed poles. I'm surprised we didn't get to see how shiny those rails got after all that switching :)
Another great video.....enjoyed it very much. Thank you!
Excellent video - no annoying music!!! It was a pleasure to watch ...
@1:25 ? Why neglect the moisture valves like that ? That ticking sound reminds me of the Penn Central & early Conrail years. Not totally neccessary maintenance work ? True.
Maybe it's just a pet peeve of mine, 'cause most times it's just a simple fix. If not, a simple replacement....😳
another awesome video. Thanks for sharing!!
This is the best old train action I have ever seen yet, get'er done boys
Very interesting Mr JT. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Wheeeeww! Some really good live switching action!!
Great vid!! SOO Line and Delaware and Hudson cars were nice to see.
Excellent video. Thanks JawTooth
26:41 that noise when they coupled the other hoppers sounded cool
Love local action, switching, shunting. Thank you!
Great patience and time well spent.
Many thanks!
Very interesting how they do this work. Thanks for this good video
a awesome catch Jawtooth, I sent you Facebook friends request your awesome you rock!!!
Awesome! I will look for it when I get on Facebook.
I just LOVE it when u say "But wait there is more!"
Hey John to thanks for doing that is really good especially when you said Paris Kentucky that I read in the description
Great action out in the country. I would be out there with a pre-packed hot lunch.
Great job jaw tooth love your show
Great video. Thanks for showing the whole switching process
Glad it was helpful!
Its nice to see old railroad cars with old names on them. Great video
Nice Video Well Done Thank You For Sharing
Awesome switching!!!
If only those rails from the Norfolk and Western days can tell you stories...
Jaw Tooth I enjoy your train videos a lot I am a huge railfan.
Love the old RR and the old signals
Excellent commentary from you mate
Great vedios I come from a long line of railway workers and I'm also a ham operator an a retired firefighter
Awesome! I was a volunteer fire department on a station in Ohio and paid by the run volunteer on a station in Kentucky.
Ahhh, Delaware and Hudson goes to the times of my youth. That huge yard in Mechanicsville is now gone and just intermodal now.
Brian, If you are ever in sacramento, look me up, we have a great train museum and lots of train spotting. Oh, not to mention a fair share of farming. Plus, I will show you what a steak is supposed to tatse like
really enjoyed
Great Video Jaw Tooth
great video all round😀
Awesome video!
Nice Video Every Saturday I Try To Catch This Action In Los Angeles But This Was Amazing Because I Never Seen This Action Take Such A Long Time But Good Video
Great video!
Jaw Tooth, speaking of NORFOLK SOUTHERN, when I was in the service, during the 1980s, I used to take the train home from Philadelphia to Chicago. Back then, it was Amtrak's "Broadway Limited". It ran on CONRAIL's tracks, now owned by NS. I remember our train, "Broadway..", ran on Horseshoe Curve, in Pennsylvania, kind of scary.
But unfortunately, the "Broadway.." train was discontinued in the 1990s. 😒
I also rode the, "Capitol Limited", from Chicago to Washington DC. That train took a similar route like the "Broadway Limited", however it bypassed Horseshoe Curve, if I remember correctly.
I would love to ride a train around Horseshoe Curve. I have filmed Amtrak going around it. 90s were some good days
@@JawTooth
Sorry Jaw Tooth, when you replied, I was still typing more words, revising my comments. I added more.
18:58 That's ok you're on camera
Best rail videos on the internet! Im just sayin.
Wow, thanks!
Great Video Brain!
Wow! Awesome video my friend!👌🙂
That was cool! Woo!
Always can count on you for great videos. Do you ever go over to Portsmouth. Like to see how much of the yard they still use
I don't go there very often. I was filming the yard from a road bridge and a couple people followed me after I left. I went in to a restaurant and they followed me inside but never said anything. I think they were NS police. I like Portsmouth but you have to watch what you do there.
Great video
Nice Video Brian every Saturday In Los Angeles I Catch This Type Of Action And I Love It And My Name Is Also Brian. Amazing Video
Just got some new surround sound system and just say damn was it loud.. lol.. just say I might have some pissed off neighbors now.. but we'll worth it
Nice one. Thanks.
Thank you too!
Another good one Son ...
Nice !!!
Interesting y they would leave all the dj cars unless they are used for a different commodity then the others
I like train videos on RUclips jawtooth 👍
Triple XXX Railroad crossing action!! Live Trains on stage! Adults only
Nice video!
awesome!
keep those videos rolling
I think the engineer was slammin those cars alil too u should have let him be in the video too his friends were 😂
Good video Jawtooth
Thanks!
Before they had radios, that must have been really difficult.
Back in the day, most railroad crewed at least 2 brakemen (front and rear) for their industrial and local moves. All sorts of hand and lantern signaling got the job done back then. A lost art to most of today's crews because many present rules require the use of radio during switching. Safety first. High ball!
It's not easy but sometimes the old way gets it done faster and it can be fun
Great catch. Did anyone count the total moves to get all the DJ cars separated?
i think their lease of these cars has expired, found documents dated this time last year
i love the thumbnail and the video jaw tooth
What this tells me, is that individual car owners have different lease arrangements within the pool. I was not aware that was permitted. I thought that uniform lease arrangements and rates were the beauty of the railcar pool system. I guess DJ just wants more than their share!!
It's DJ Vous all over again!
Awesome Video Question JT If ever Find out Why they Stopped Using DJJ Cars Could You Please Let me Know Just Wondering being Nosey LOL Thank You Again AWESOME Video.
I use to see them all over Cincinnati but seems not so much any more. Their websites don't work so I have to wonder if there bought out. Bloomberg says they are still around. They are owned by NUCOR Steel though that might have changed.
@@eottoe2001 Thank You for Replying to My Question I Really Appreciate it LOTS Again Thank You For He Information.
Super Video. 🇮🇳
Nice video big like
It was really funj watch9ng the switching, that is sh0pw i did it on my lay out.
thats some interesting action there mate
*😀🔍fully viewed✅ supporting one another🔎🎭✅ it got our like 👍🇦🇺👍😀*
That's a good hogger ... gentle couplings, very little slack action "banging'. Some deft train control. I had a sphincter moment when that truck came up to the crossing in the end .. does he hear the horn? I was thinking.
Nice:D
