Coke Train Goes Over & Under BIG Railroad Bridge! Ever Seen This Much Coke? West Virginia Trains

  • Coal Train Passes Heavy Coke Train On Railroad Bridge, Then Coke Train Goes Around & Under The Bridge While Other Trains Pass! Norfolk Southern & CSX trains in Kenova, West Virginia. Epic train horn salute! Coke, coal, tanker train, mixed freight train and an intermodal train are featured. Have you ever seen this much coke before?
A single GE locomotive, Dash 9 40CW, pulls the most coke that I have ever seen. Look how powerful this locomotive is! It pulls the train from southern Ohio into West Virginia. It goes over the big bridge by me and then a little time later it passes me again but this time below the bridge. I didn't know it was the same train at first. The coke was taken to a terminal in Kenova on the Ohio River. While the train was passing me there were several other trains that passes by it and under it. Check out the CSX manifest with the cool boxcars. Some of them would look great on a model railroad layout.
The engineer on one train gave us an epic horn salute. The train crews in this area are friendly to the railfans. This is a great place to watch trains. There is a grassy area that is kept mowed and a nice gravel parking lot. Stores and restaurants are nearby and the police station is within walking distance. Best frequencies are 161.250 for Norfolk Southern and 160.230 for CSX. Of course there are other frequencies but I prefer to keep the chatter down and just listen for the trains approaching. The EOT frequency wouldn't do much good hear because you would be picking one up about all the time since railyards are nearby.

Photographed at the intersection of CSX and NS one the Hobo Shoestring Highway It's ironic as you show the coke train USS is in the middle of decommissioning 3 Coke Ovens at their Clairton works whose production was sent to Gary IN. Last year Cliffs closed their Coke plant in Follansbee WV and there are only 16 operating Coke plants in the US. Actually a Popeye energy day with the coke train then lapped by a coal train and concluded by an ethanol train. CSX tossed in the oldies boxcar Roundup for another classic Jawtooth Trackside visit

@@BradleyRobinson-vi7gf sadly since I live in Milwaukee I don't know where that coke came from and coming down to that lower-level makes me think it's going to go into a barge. The closest Coke customer in the area would be AK Steel in Middletown Ohio. We had a Coke plant in Milwaukee that closed in 1982 and they finally got the property cleaned up about 2 years ago. There also used to be a Coke plant in Ironton Ohio but that's been gone a number of years also. It's an impressive operation watch them make it but that sulfurous rotten egg smell was horrible. I hope someone knows the answer but since they use NS cars it most likely originated on NS

It’s incredible that one un rebuilt old Dash9-44CW can pull this train all by itself. In south Miami Dade County on the CSX S Line in the Kendall area in the late 70s and early 80s before the line was rebuilt, a single 4 axle u-boat, dash 7, or GP 38 or 40 would pull in excess of 100 loaded rock cars on light bent rail, muddy right of way and lots of weeds. At 10 to 15 mph. No six axles at that time on this line.

Thanks for another video from your 23 March 2023 trip to Kenova, West Virginia, Jaw Tooth! The Norfolk Southern coke train coming across the bridge from Ohio was impressive because of its slow steady pace. When you said that the coke came around and then passed under the bridge, I was wondering how the train did that. I looked at Google Maps and saw that when a train goes across the bridge and then makes a left turn the train goes down a grade into a Norfolk Southern yard. There is a track in the yard that makes a U-turn at the east end of the yard that allows a train to come off the bridge or trains created in the yard to head west on the Norfolk Southern tracks that go under the bridge. The CSX manifest train that went westbound under the Norfolk Southern bridge was a nice addition to all the Norfolk Southern trains. I also enjoyed the horn salute that the engineer on that intermodal train gave you and 1960gambit. It must be a wonderful feeling to get acknowledged by the train crew as you are railfanning.

Another great video JT! I enjoyed seeing that area back in 1991. That's the only time I've been there. At 73 now, I don't travel as often. Thanks for bringing back memories!

I never knew that a hopper car weighs 28 tons. Those Norfolk Southern trains and the CSX train were recorded into "sure shots" made by you. I am pleased that you caught some rare, uncatchable shots. I wish I were with you just to watch those trains with my eyes trained on those freight cars. I wonder if the locomotives and freight cars have flanged wheels that are exactly alike.

Great good video, mr Jaw Tooth.
A look from above on the tracks under and above on this location. The spotters in the Netherlands say: lijkt mij een strak plan.
