  • This past weekend I completed my first Grand Ride (aka Iron Butt Ride | SadddleSore), going over 1000 miles in under 24 hours. These are the highlights.       I was honestly fine the entire time until about the last 20 miles. The scariest part was probably the 100 miles on the interstate just given how the idiots drive in Arizona!

    You did the extra hard version. Most people I have seen stay on the highway and average around 65mph. Glad the adrenaline kept you going and that you were close to home when it wore off.

    I plan to do the Iron Butt Lower Great Lakes with the Honda Shadow Phantom. I live in Rochester, NY. I don't like to fail, so, I'm training for it: 250 mile ride, 500, 750, then the Big Kahuna.

      The seat concepts seat was excellent! This was the first real long range test of it and it was superb. Honestly my knees were more sore than my backside.

    Just joined your channel and absolutely love it! I can’t wait to get my Royal Enfield as well just deciding if I should go with the Continental GT or the Himalayan. It’s a tough choice but I am now thinking if I am going to take long cruises the Himalayan may be my best option.

    I toured the Morenci mines back in the early 90's during a Geology field trip (It is a copper mine BTW). They had some really cool polished natural azurite and malachite pieces in the office where the Geologists were. It was cool! Congratz on the Iron Butt Ride!

    Fan bloody tastic 🎉 Top stuff mate! I couldn’t imagine doing that distance on my Himmy in one stint. Furthest I’ve ridden in a day is 620km (only 385 miles). And that coldest temp - far out, that’s cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey!😳

      Thanks! One of the skills I've gained from 15 years of running ultramarathons, is how to maintain my stubbornness during a very long outing ;-) Even still though, sitting down for 20+ hours on a bike, is a lot different than moving for 20+ hours on foot...

      No mods...strictly stock engine and sprocket config. (I do have aftermarket air filter)

    The road at 10:58 was hairy - spectacular view though. I can see the blind bend at 11:40 being a killer if it was night-time. The sunset at was epic. The engine sounds really rough at 16:52 onwards though, is it just the camera?

      Yeah some of those turns along the Coronado Trail were definitely a bit hairy...and wouldn't want to do at night for sure! Thankfully, the tone and behavior of the engine didn't change at all for the entirely of the ride...woohoo! My helmet microphone dropped down in my helmet and picked up much more wind noise in the last few hundred miles. I did my best to edit it out in processing, but it didn't work well :-(

      Honestly, I think the Seat Concepts did great! It was very comfortable and since I don't really intend to ever go more than 1000 miles again in one go, I'd say I'm pretty content. I have heard that Corbin seats are also quite good though!

    Well done! What's your rule-of-thumb for how you use the "Trip F" meter? How far do you comfortably take it before you gas up?

      On this ride I fueled up at every half tank in order to get more receipts for tracking. Normally though I’ll go 30-40 miles on F comfortably. I did a fuel range test a while back on all high speed riding and got 210 total miles with about 80 on Trip F

      @@On2Feet Thanks, good to know. I'm only at 1000 km (600 miles) on my new '22 so still trying to get the hang of that fuel gauge. I'm really not liking that it gets to E so fast!

      I’ve gotten up to 75 miles on F mode but I carry an extra pint of reserve fuel with me. Too scary to see that gauge on E. 😂

      @@advmike That checks with what I'm thinking. My odometer's metric so I'll use 100 km (62 miles) on the F trip meter as my "GAS UP BY NOW" point. That should still give me a margin.

      @@PeterBeens have a 2020 Himmy in Australia. With a loaded bike I don’t like to push the F trip past 100km. At F 100 I was able to squeeze in 13.3L when refuelling, which equates to just under 2L of reserve left in the tank.

    I have a Himalayan. Endless battery replacements and electrical problems. Too slow and weak to ride on a highway. Poor fit and finish. Can't wait to sell mine.

      Aww man...bummer to hear that. I'm still rocking the factory battery 3 years in...no issues. I had a few glitches with my fuel pump relay causing stalling...but after I replaced it, it's been fine ever since. As you see in this video, the himmi definitely isn't ideal for interstate, but it does fine for me at 70 mph on secondary highways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Probably because I was either going up hill, or into a hard headwind ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .....it is a Himalayan after all. Doesn't do well in 5th gear on highways.

    What did fuel mileage work out to be? I saw "cost of fuel" but not gallons.
    Just curious.

      I will look at actual fuel totals, but a rough estimate given gas prices is that I used about 20 gallons (so 50 miles per gallon). This aligns with my earlier fuel range test I did on the highway where I got about 210 miles on a full tank (~4 gallons).

      @@On2Feet that's roughly what I figured. Was the bike loaded? I'm guessing that you ran it pretty hard in places to get the 50mph average as well.
      Impressive ride for a bike that's not made to eat the miles of highway.

      Indeed! I stopped many times for snacks but was also not really burning a lot of calories either. I carried 2.5 liters of water on my back that I sipped constantly too so was never dehydrated.
