    GG went thru 3 labels since 8y ago (older pre-2010 has Her Majesty 's emblem) had more sherry and were more punchy. Today's GG has less sherry , but still uses Golden Promise barley and malt (same as Macallan) - along slow kilning, resulting in a rather "farm yard'y" profile - this is what some folks LOVE this GG. Compare it next Speyburn or Aberfeldy or Dufftown and u shall see. Great video.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +2

      Well I said in the video that I can see what people like in here, it's just not for me. I don't deny that I like big sherry flavours in my whisky, and this type of profile often underwhelms. I'd rather have an entirely bourbon matured whisky than a sherried whisky where the flavours taste light and tired. Personal opinion of course.
      Lol pass on the Dufftown/Aberfeldy. 😉

    Nothing wrong with harshness as long as there is honesty and thoroughness. Those 2 elements are there in this review. Thanks again for the help. I found the older bottling for $48 plus tax. I’d rather take that money and put it towards a Springbank 10 year.

    Glengoyne used to be my favourite distillery but I think I’ve outgrown it at this point. I don’t hate the fact that it’s 43% at this age; what I can’t accept is that the 18 YO is only 43% especially when it’s now over £100! All in all, I think it’s a good step-up from the “beginner” scotches like Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, Glenlivet, but I wouldn’t call it a top tier distillery

    For once I think you're being a bit harsh! I hear you in that it doesn't knock your socks off like an Edradour 12 or something but for me there's always a spot for a lighter-style sherried malt in the cabinet and this one is a fantastic value imo at under $60 CAD ($50 US) if you shop around. I prefer it to the entry level Glenfarclas offerings and after trying Tamdhu 12 (also bottled at 43%) on your recommend I don't think the Tamdhu is worth the premium in this category. Tamdhu 15 different story, but different price tag as well. On another note, finally got a hold of a bottle of Bladnoch 10. Loving it so far. Interested to hear your take, cheers.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +2

      I do like some lighter sherried expressions. My go-to right now is Glenlivet Illicit Still, for example. Yeah I'm not quite sure why this one doesn't click with me. I much prefer the Tamdhu 12, however it's only CAD $10 more than the Glengoyne here, so the price bump might be less dramatic for me.
      Man I really wanna get my hands on a Bladnoch 10. Bladnoch in general is one of the few brands that's never sold at a decent price in my market, and the 10 is simply not available at all. Tragic.

    • @lewisduffy675
      @lewisduffy675 3 года назад +1

      @@Gwhisky On further reflection I was being a bit of the devil's advocate. "Unremarkable" it is. That said you have to put Glengoyne above several more expensive, yet lesser single-malts from mass-marketed distilleries and that's why bottles like this always have a home in my stash. On the Bladnoch note maybe I'll have to send you something in the mail bud...

    Where I shop, it's usually available in a gift set with a Glencarin which can be a selling point. About the whisky itself, I tend to like it and while I too prefer 46% as a minimum strength for premium malts, 43% ain't too bad and it drinks well, but not as well as Bunnahabhain 12, Deanston 12, or Craigallachie 13 for just a few bucks more.
    That being said, I still prefer the 43% 10 yo Glengoyne for under $35; that bottle at that price represents an excellent value ✌️

      Personally, I didn’t find the Glengoyne 21 to be any better than their 18. The 25 and 30 year olds were excellent and a big step up (and you finally get to a good ABV with those) but they’re very very pricey.

  • @Nikolay_Nikolov
    @Nikolay_Nikolov 3 года назад +3

    Where I live, Glengoyne is presented mostly by the 10 and 12 yo expressions, plus the Batch Strength and Legacy Chapter II NAS. I haven't had any of them, but considering the presentation they are overpriced IMHO. On Bulgarian market that is. Again, considering the presentation solely, I think price-wise the 10 yo and the 12 yo belong with the Glenfarclas 10 and 12, which is far from the case. I haven't come across any of the older expressions but they also appear to be "premium" priced. I have heard only praises about the 25 yo, but even if I ever see it available my entire being will oppose the idea of shelling out that outrageous amount of money for a bottle of booze. We have a saying here: "Enjoyment is priceless", but, I mean, I'm trying to keep it real here :) So, for me, Glengoyne is absolutely "try before you buy" brand. The same as the Tamdhu, by the way. Although I'm interested in the 15 yo, it's price here is something like 90-100 euros which I'm hardly willing to part with :)
    Cheers :)

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +1

      Fair enough. Agree about the 25. I'm sure it's great, but well beyond my budget. I tend to avoid whiskies beyond a certain threshold in terms of pricing. If there's there's premium whisky on my wishlist I have to carefully consider it and do as much research and/or sampling as possible. I've been “burned” several times in the past when I paid what I considered to be a large sum of money only to have the whisky fail to meet the high expectations that come with such a price tag.

    • @Nikolay_Nikolov
      @Nikolay_Nikolov 3 года назад

      @@Gwhisky Same here. I have set a limit of 150 euros which I would pay for a single bottle of whisky or other spirit. And it must be something of proper age (21+), well presented, highly praised and realy special😀 Generaly, for malt whisky, I consider the range between 30 and 80 euros to be the sweetspot for high price/quality ratio. Some exceptions aside the offerings below 30 euros are mostly super-market basic stuff and those above 80 belong in the realm of "diminishing returns". Again, this is regarding the current status of Bulgarian market.

I’m hoping the 21 is much better, as I plunked $130 for it and haven’t opened it yet. I did enjoy the 18 but I found it to be too gentle of a sherry.
