Arthur Lowe's character reminds me of my grandmother;- we all came to Australia from England in 1965 and to her, everybody that wasn't English was a foreigner.
Brilliant writing but, Arthur Lowe doesn't get the credit he deserves, he was class, his comedy timing and character acting is second to none. I genuinely believe he was one of the best that ever was. Just brilliant.
A lot of people don't recall this gem of a comedy.Arthur is magnificent in this.Anyone who hasn't seen this you are in for a treat. His comic timing and long pauses have yet to be bettered
17:49 The intonation so the audience gets the joke halfway through the line, the pause; the man was a legend. When an actor can play essentially the same character so many times and still make you smile, that's something special.
Arthur Lowe + Galton & Simpson script = Comedy perfection. Many echoes of the Hancock episode “The Lift”, again with a superb script deftly handled by a master craftsman. Wonderful.
I love anything with Arthur Lowe (and also that Le Messurier fellow). . . always have. But what I find tremendously heartwarming is the fact that there are so many other normal people out there who love it too. So comforting to know I am not alone. 👍
In Norway we have a Norwegian version of that episode titled "Høyt Henger Vi" (We Hang High) (1982) in the Norwegian-Swedish-Danish television comedy series "Fleksnes", created by Swedish writer Bo Hermansson and based on Galton and Simpson's scripts for the British series "Hancock's Half Hour" and "Comedy Playhouse". So fascinating to see the original version and so funny. Now that's British humor I ever heard and watched as a Norwegian.
Arthur Lowe was a comedy genius. I loved his humour, timing and characters. It's uplifting to read the kind and supportive comments for him here. I don't recall seeing this before, but laughed to the core throughout. Typical Arthur in pompous character. With Galton and Simpson writing and Arthur in the lead role, you could not wish for more. Comedy heaven.
Totally agree with you. Its like a Hancock's Half Hour episode that didn't get made. The criticizing and chuntering the character Arthur Lowe is playing feels pretty much like Tony.
The guard seems to be Maurice from Yes Prime Minister! The official from Brussels, a meeting arranged by Sir Humphrey Appleby to sort out the English sausage problem!
God, I haven't seen this for years, and I could only remember watching the bit about the war years and their military record. It's taken me a fair amount of time (almost a couple of years whenever I thought about it) to find this, I didn't know who played the German or what the program I watched was even called, I only knew that it was Aurther Lowe in this scene. Really enjoyed watching this again. Thanks for putting this on. All the Best......
The German in this was played by the great Anton Diffring 1916 - 1989, who is perhaps well known for portraying Colonel Kramer in the film, Where Eagles Dare.
nice combination of ideas probably formed from g and s classics the lift with tony hancock and the wonderful steptoe and son episode pilgrims progress with harold and albert on a plane to france!
I can remember watching this with my dad when i was young,we were both Dads Army fans too,you wouldnt get great comedy like this nowadays, the pc brigade have made sure of that.
'for all my xenophobic friends' ..eh?? - no doubt one or two people will think that we are supposed to laugh along with Lowe's Character in this but you can be quite sure this is a satirising of certain British attitudes and assumptions at that time.
Oh ha ha ha - foreign people, aren’t they funny they are different to us. Actually this is a lot cleverer than that as you would expect from Galton and Simpson - the joke is always on Arthur Lowes character, the pretentious little Englander who aspires to be more than he is. Similar to his Captain Mainwaring character in Dad’s Army and Also Tony Hancock in the Galton and Simpson Hancocks Half Hour and Hancock. It does a better job reflecting the class obsessed British society and the the insecurities of those desperate to move up the social hierarchy - coming up against the structures that limit them and i turn being blind to the limitations they are putting on themselves. This isn’t the outright Xenophobia seen in utter tosh like love they neighbor, mind your language and curry and chips. Shows that weren’t just bigoted but also utter crap and not in the slightest bit funny.
0:58 irresistible character was Lowe, not the man, the part he played at 0:50 allowing that women to wear that heavy back back (she was struggling) he did nothing, this was bang out of order in the script, and I stopped watching after this...
@Knickertwist Copperby I'm very much afraid he probably is. Understanding humour in its performance and reception is far from standard equipment in people.
Arthur Lowe's character reminds me of my grandmother;- we all came to Australia from England in 1965 and to her, everybody that wasn't English was a foreigner.
Anything with Arthur Lowe in is brilliant
Brilliant writing but, Arthur Lowe doesn't get the credit he deserves, he was class, his comedy timing and character acting is second to none. I genuinely believe he was one of the best that ever was. Just brilliant.
I had to look this one up and it aired 1n 1977, over forty year ago. RUclips really is a treasure trove of gems like this.
haha I remember laughing so much watching this as a kid!!
Natural "Staight-Guy" comedian. Impeccable comedic timing.
As a Dad's Army fan, this is like a post war Captain Mainwaring.
He's essentially playing the same character, though more bigoted.
Me too!
I am old enough to remember seeing this when it was shown on TV .
I am so very grateful for this being posted.
An absolute gem
A lot of people don't recall this gem of a comedy.Arthur is magnificent in this.Anyone who hasn't seen this you are in for a treat. His comic timing and long pauses have yet to be bettered
It's good to know that Anton Diffring never forgot his mother tongue.
17:49 The intonation so the audience gets the joke halfway through the line, the pause; the man was a legend. When an actor can play essentially the same character so many times and still make you smile, that's something special.
This should have been a series. Arthur Lowe plays a wonderful comic creation assisted by a great script.
-could have passed as a demobbbed Capt. Mainwaring.....
It sort of was, see the series (available on RUclips) called "Potter".
Arthur Lowe + Galton & Simpson script = Comedy perfection. Many echoes of the Hancock episode “The Lift”, again with a superb script deftly handled by a master craftsman. Wonderful.
Still amazed to see this proper International film actor Anton Diffring appearing in a domestic British comedy. Great stuff.
Both Ray & Alan are gone now and should be grinning as much as I am. Genius script, genius timing throughout.
Fabulous hilarious what happened to the country famed for its immense comedic talent,I could cry.
Absolutely entertaining.Thank you so much for posting.

Not alone 🙂
Do you think that's wise?
brilliant arthur lowe at his best truly british
The character was rather like 'Potter' that Arthur did for the BBC
Absolutely agree. He had the pompous middle class character down to a tee. Shame he only made two series of potter
@@cerijamesking2209 Yes, Sadly Arthur died just before the 3rd series started
More Mainwaring than Potter.
Best one-off galton & Simpson ever. Perfect circular half hour comedy. Genius by Alan and ray.
Thanks for uploading this classic. Haven't seen this since i was a child.l

What a gem. Stands out from most of the other comedies from that era. I laughed all the way through. Brilliant.
What a gem, never thought I'd see this again,I remember watching this with my dad.
this a great comedy sketch. the Heinz bean gag the best.
Wonderful comedy writing and acting
I remember this in the late 70's. It was funny then and still is.
Reading the tins...Spaghetti...Mussolini, Heinz....Ja? Baked beans.
its ironic ..we shared much more in common with europeans than the type they claim are british nowadays . . . .much more . .. .!
Absolutely first-class.
Great upload and many thanks.
I can imagine Hancock playing this part too. Typical Galton and Simpson. Arthur Lowe was pure class.
Totally agree with you. Its like a Hancock's Half Hour episode that didn't get made. The criticizing and chuntering the character Arthur Lowe is playing feels pretty much like Tony.
A little comedy gem from another age.
Heinz... Ja? ...Baked beans! What a line! Lol!
They gave us Hancock, Steptoe and many comedies like this. God bless Galton and Simpson.
the 'Burt Reynolds play with Rossiter was another of these.
anton classic
Nice to see Anton Diffring in this also! Great scene!
He was fantastic in everything he was in
He was an actor much integrity. An actor's actor.
Such wonderful comic timing from the brilliant and much missed Ted Lowe.
I can almost hear Arthur Lowe doing all the Hancock shows. And anton differin. What a coup.
I mind of this play when it was first broadcast. A classic.
I remember this from when I were a lad! Brilliant stuff.😂
they do not like it up them Captain Mainwaring !
Stupid Boy William!
Brilliant, arthur was great. As were the rest of the cast in this.
Brilliant . Arthur Lowe just superb
Arthur Lowe at his best.
'Potter' on holiday.
Fantastic thanks for sharing
I thought it was very funny. Thanks for uploading this.
genius script. much loved, much missed
haha ,you could break up a demonstration in cairo with that
The guard seems to be Maurice from Yes Prime Minister! The official from Brussels, a meeting arranged by Sir Humphrey Appleby to sort out the English sausage problem!
Thanks. I was wondering where I knew him from.
Englisher Wurst!
He was also Andre in the Fawlty Towers episode Gourmet Night.
Thanks for posting. Brilliant.
13:00 hours, at last he got the 24 hour clock. ;)
From The Galton & Simpson Playhouse - aired 17 Feb 1977.

Ah! Thank you !
And who played the other parts ?
His wife looks like a famous model of that era
Arthur Lowe is a fantastic actor and one of my hero's.

Yeah, mysoginy, racism, homophobia and xenophobia just aren't as good as they used to be
@@neilpower60 But your neuroses and hypersensitivity are still on full blast petal.
Brilliant...loved it 🤗
My goodness, where did this come from. Enjoyed it so much.
Brilliant! 👌👍👏😊
The brilliant Arthur Lowe 🤣
Superb!
Good old days...
Excellent comedy. 😅
Arthur Lowe's character is simmilar to Hancock in terms of attitude
This would have been a good Hancock sketch!
Brilliant!
I am smiling
Lowe was the main man, when it came to deadpan remarks.
From The Galton & Simpson Play house
Mainwaring in all but name.
Mainwaring would never have been so mean to his wife. He was scared of her and under her thumb.
Love it.
A classic, xenophobic ? How many french people do you know 😂 they love us you know 😬
is this a series? where can i see he other parts?
'for all my xenophobic friends' ..eh?? - no doubt one or two people will think that we are supposed to laugh along with Lowe's Character in this but you can be quite sure this is a satirising of certain British attitudes and assumptions at that time.
Of its time but still hilarious
Hilarious!
Lol is this meant to be Mainwarring after the war ended and he has retired and went on holiday.
Interesting, not many have confessed to liking this...
I have never seen this one before, but there is a Norwegian version and I love them both!
Classic Arthur Lowe. 😊
Typical potter
Brilliant
I love Arthur Lowe's voice. I've never seen this. Was it a regular show or just a one-time thing?
Galton & Simpson Playhouse.
@@retepsnikrep: Thank You!
A one off.
Was the joke that he was rude to everyone?
Rubbish! Made of steel, not of spaghetti!
Who was the guy in the bowler hat? Was it Lionel Blair?
It was Aubrey Morris
