우리는 왜 영화를 사랑하는가? 이 질문에서 작업은 시작되었다. 영화는 1부와 2부로 나뉜다. 1부에서는 영화를 왜 사랑하는지에 대한 모색을, 2부에서는 그래서 어떻게 영화를 사랑해야할 것인지, 그속에서 일어나는 고민을 털어놓는다. 같이 고민해보고 사랑하고 싶다.
1부, 영화를 왜 사랑하는가?
- 한 평 정도의 어두운 방 안에서 두 사람은 영화만이 세상의 통로이다. 서로에게 쉽사리 꺼내기 어려운 마음의 상처와 위로를 손전등으로 비춘 영화 속 캐릭터의 대사로 건넨다. 단순히 대사 하나를 가져오는 것이 아니라 영화 전체를 훔쳐 와서 자신 안에 담긴 수많은 서브텍스트를 담는다. 파편화되어 있지만, 그 파편성으로 어떤 사이가 강하게 생겨난다. 이것은 타자와 더불어 영화에서 만난 사랑할 수밖에 없는 캐릭터들과의 소통이자 뒤섞임이며 결핍의 부분을 되돌아보게 한다. 그러니까 우리는 우연하게 세상에 내던져진 우리를 안아준다. 고요하면서, 따뜻하게. 그리고 다시 물어본다. 우리는 어떻게 다른 사람들이 존재한다는 것을 아는가?
2부, 어떻게 영화를 사랑할 것인가?
- 그들은 계시가 내려오면 나가자고 약속한다. 여기서 계시는 ‘영화 같은 순간’이다. 아무쪼록 믿고 싶은 강한 마음이다.
“아무도 안 계시인가요?”
“계시인가요?”
하지만 ‘계시’라고 여긴 검침원이 문을 두드리자 나가기보다는 오히려 영화로운 힘과 함께 집 안으로 끌어당긴다. 그제야 빛은 색으로 흩뿌려지고, 발이 둥둥 떠오른다. 약속한 사람들처럼 춤을 춘다. 무엇 하나 문밖으로 내보내지 못하고 ‘오! 열어줘요. 그대 마음을. 떠나지 않게(노래 가사)’를 외치고 있다. 우연과 필연처럼 들어온 영화가 우리에게, 우리가 영화에게, 또한 이 영화를 보는 모든 이가 마음을 열어주기를 바라는 간절함과 그 간절함으로 비롯된 약속이다. 나가자는 약속을 접고 우리를 우리에게 맡기고, 모든 당신이라는 타자는 영화의 빛깔 속에서 세상의 모든 우리가 된다.
“우리 여전히 사랑하지, 우리가 가장 잘하는 게 그거잖아.”
Why do we love movies? My short film begins with this question. It's divided into two sections, with the first section exploring why we should love films and the second part exploring how then we should love them.
Part 1, Why Does One Love Movies?
- The only way for the two people in this small, dark room to engage with the world is through film. They use dialogue from movies to bring forth words of pain and comfort that they cannot say on their own. Not simply bringing in singular lines of dialogue, they steal entire films and imbue them with their own personal subtexts. Although this process is fragmented, they create a strong relationship with each other through these fragments.
This process reflects the communication and melding between characters who can only love through movies, and allows us to reflect on the areas in which they are lacking. In a sense, we embrace the self that we fortuitously threw out into the world. Calmly, yet warmly. And we ask ourselves once again: how do we know that others really exist?
Part 2, How to Love Movies?
- The two people promise to leave the room when a revelation comes. By this they mean a 'movie-like moment'. They have a strong desire to believe in this moment.
“Is nobody there?”
“Is it a revelation?”
When a meter-reader knocks on their door, they think he is the revelation, but rather than them leaving, he is pulled into their house with filmic power. The light scatters into colors, and their feet float off the ground; they dance together as if they had planned to all along. They're unable to let anything out through the door and instead sing the lyrics, "Oh! Open up your heart! Don't leave".
Films which come to us through both chance and inevitability, reflect the desperate desire and promise that the films and the audience members will open up their hearts to one another. Abandoning the promise of going out and entrusting ourselves to ourselves, we all become the universal "we" within the color of the film.
“Let's love forever, that's the thing we do best."
