they missed the opportunity to add something like a grocery store or a small corner store bc 7 11's (and other convenient stores) are very common in Japan!

It's weird you can't even buy anything at the train station. Almost every real train station has a kiosk. Even a vending machine, as they are a big feature in this pack and used heavily in Japan.

I miss the open world. And the cars....and pretty much the gameplay that was in the other Sims. You could get a burglar in your house, call the police,edit every neighbourhood to your liking, making new lots etc. O yeah THE COLOR WHEEL OF SIMS 3!

It's still jarring to see they finally make sims walk and talk at the same time even if it's only for hiking. Despite some of the downsides that you've mentioned I kinda have some hopes for this pack. Great review Jesse!

You know what would have been perfect for hiking/taking a walk? A stroller, bc in the stream Graham had to literally send the toddler away bc they are no use for hiking. But imagine how cute it would have been to take your toddler for a walk in a pushchair
That or carrying them on your shoulders would have been super cute
@@merchantfan as a mother of a toddler I kept thinking about a carrier like why can’t the carry the toddler on their back or front, would have been a great feature.
It’s weird how little focus there is on any life stages other than young adult/adult. As a family player, it’s off-putting.

I'm a Sims 2 player and get annoyed at how easy Sims 4 is. I need something to make the game harder and have more depth.
@Zachary Khan I've only ever played 3 and 4, but I still felt a difference when I moved over. Not sure if it is the difference in difficulty or the difference in the amount if things to do. Or both.
@@kellygallisdorfer8454 Yes, I’ve been playing Sims 2 for a while and going back to it was kind of hard because Sims 3 is easier, and Sims 4 barely takes ANY effort. However, once I got back into how Sims 2 worked, I enjoyed having some challenge and some setbacks (like forgetting to put an alarm and having several items stolen from my sim family who barely had anything, anyway, lol). Sims 4 has ZERO challenge.

Yeah all the shells in Sims 4 really make me miss rabbit holes. I think the town for Get Famous might have actually been the worst off for "emptiness, total emptiness". There's like 5 residential lots total. There's like 5-6 community lots. Want a restaurant there? You have to not have a gym or one of the two clubs. Barely anyone can live there- even most of the celebrities have to live in other worlds. Those little fake houses especially in the non-celebrity area just remind me how no one can live there
@@merchantfan the get famous is good for a one time game play but after that yoh don't even visit the del sol Valley. Like what an I getting there, nothing. Even the NPC other than orange Bailey moon, rest all have horrible traits. The sims team have tried something with the lifestyle thing that I actually like here

I think this pack is just the kind of expansion pack needed for a game that's been out this long -- a little niche but still with enough variety for lots of people to like it. Definitely not essential, but adds genuine value to the game also.
I kinda feel like adding Lifestyles and Sentiments feels like a base game necessity, the base game is so boring and anything to liven up the sims feels so important 😵
I like how it’s not something like seasons or university that I feel a pressure to buy whether the quality is good or not cause they’re just essential parts of a life simulator whereas this is a niche addition.

@@hanbanan404 Apparently we're getting some sentiments with the update. We're getting some specific ones with the pack like hiking or doing an expedition. I just wish they'd released this idea much earlier so we could have been getting some sentiments with each pack. Imagine having happy sentiments for sharing a holiday together or negative sentiments towards the other players on your team if you lose a soccer game

Like if your sims always have a good Winterfest, they'll have a positive emote on winterfest. But if they've had a bunch of negative Winterfest, maybe they're tense on the day. Like wow, that would be soooo rich and amazing. I'm excited to see how sentiments work anyways though. I cant wait for the update
I found it funny that during the livestream when they went to the town square it was dead and the dude was like "it's still early morning so there's no one around". It was 11am.

not agreeing with the 'don't like it don't buy it sentiment' is exactly why i absolutely love and appreciate your honesty about the packs. within the sims community on twitter, tumblr and even youtube sometimes there's a lot of bitterness towards people who are 'ungrateful' for shite content and i think you're so right that we deserve better and have the right to demand it!
i also love how respectfully you articulate your opinion on the subject, and i think there is a lot that can be learned on both sides of the journey to batuu shitshow that erupted. thank u for this hen
@Zachary Khan Part of why that ideology doesn't necessarily always work is because you won't really know if you truly don't like something unless you try it. Luckily, reviewers are here to give us the info, but in some cases it might not even be enough to know for sure.
But apart from that, I think what they dislike about the whole "don't like it don't buy it" sentiment is that people literally use the statement specifically to subdue criticism and pleas for better content. The way it's used matters. Similar to the "all lives matter" sentiment. It's a sound statement, but it is mostly used in conversation to downplay people's complaints and issues.
Sure, but you have to know where to draw the line. This community is never ever satisfied. The skin tones update came out recently, and all they did was complain.

@@LL-wu5ui skintones update was broken, and if simmers hadn't complained it wouldn't have been fixed. that pretty much can be applied to all areas of the Sims 4 that need improvement- if nobody brings light to the subject, they won't know it needs sorting out🥴

A. being a supportive consumer (who feedbacks constructive criticism to better gameplay and ensure longevity of a franchise)
vs.
B. being ignorantly biased fans from financially privileged backgrounds which enable them to frequently blow $$$ on obviously shoddy products that don't warrant the price compared to market standards, indirectly perpetuating EA's culture of delivering profitable mediocrity.
No game is made perfect to cater to everyone's needs hence it's common sense to expect dissatisfaction. The issue is many community members take it personally instead of staying in their own lane & berrating with "If you don't like it, don't buy it". Ironic, considering how they don't take their own advice: "If they don't like the sentiment, don't get involved in it". Hypocritical busybodies.
Bear in mind, it took people's relentless complaints (and ultimately white voices for the most part) to get EA to acknowledge the flaw in their skin tones. And don't ever forget the half-assed skin tone update they initially put out thinkkng it would shut everyone up. It took a lot of noise to get to the level of this upcoming Dec update.
I feel like it’s good they’re bringing renting places as an option. I live in Canada and In my real life the only people I know who own their own house are people who are married. The rest rent. It’s just unrealistic to say some owns a house as young adult tbh.
Having a rentals like that reminded me of AirBnB's too. That's pretty cool.
I don’t think that’s what they mean by rental lots. They mean it like when you go on vacation in Outdoor Retreat or Jungle Adventure - you rent the lot for the period of your stay. You still have to have a home lot. I’m sure you could rent it indefinitely and effectively live there that way, but you’d still have to have purchased a home lot.

Oh please, sitting a few meters above the ground in a freezing temperatue for about 10 minutes is part of the experience. Especially when it breaks and you're just kinda swinging in there with strangers

I really hate that they keep adding more shell houses than usable lots. And also, I'd love useable shops even if it was just a themed shop to buy things that was a rabbit hole postbox menu type of thing. But you click on the clothes one and clothes of that region (pack) pop up to be bought, like if you went to buy local stuff when travelling.
I grew up and live in a ski town and the biggest bummer of the whole "teleporting gondola" thing is you don't get to have the interactions you usually get while riding on a ski lift. Whether that would be the random conversations with your friends, the casual chat or lovely awkward silence with the stranger sharing your chair, or even when you're on your own on a four-person seat and you can just stretch out and lie back on the chair, one foot resting on the seat while your other foot dangles below with your snowboard. Not to mention when you drop a glove or a pole or an ipod, or you get stuck on the restraining bar and have a momentary panic before you get it up just in time to get off the lift...
Damn, the sims team really missed out on a gold mine of funny animations here.
Still looks like a fun pack, though.
Edit: there are some awesome hot springs places in Colorado that are big enough that they can make them into actual swimming pools.
I was really disappointed with the lack of content for the skiing/snowboarding parts of the pack. The world should've been bigger with more slopes and lifts.
Yeah, I live in the desert-ish part of Colorado and I’ve been to Pagosa Springs and I love their hot springs. Great first experience! I’ve never really been to ski towns but I’d like to one day.
@@jennatandy6272 I can't actually remember if I've been to Pagosa Springs (maybe for a middle school track meet but who knows) but I have been to the Ouray hot springs which were pretty awesome. I'd recommend Crested Butte for a ski town visit but I may be slightly biased. ;-)
You just made me realize how much i wish there could be an animation for falling flat on your back getting off a chair lift with low ski skill
The fact that sims can walk and talk with each other in this pack is amazing , they should add this to the base game, just going on a walk

It does. And, along with the extended Instagram, was just a ‘creative choice’ for the trailer and nothing more.
The one downer about every great sims expansion pack: 40% of all the space in the pack is essentially empty shells to make our builds pretty 😶

It seems to be getting worse aswell. In Eco Lifestyle two out of 3 neighbourhoods were horrible and totally unusable as there was two actual houses and 20 fake ones. They used to just be in the background
Yeah it's a real downer for people who do continuous family games bc you keep running out of room. They don't even put in blank lots so you can add more places depending on your system. I'd really like to have Sims who 'move' there but eventually something needs to be sacrificed
I hate it, I would rather just have trees around the houses so my builds don't look out of place all the time.

Having lived in a snowy mountain town in Japan for 4 years, the attention to detail in this pack is incredible.
That being said, an empty city center (aside from festivals) is not uncommon where I lived lol. Bad for gameplay, but it would add to the realism for me 😂
I was really hoping we could have our sims ride in trains too because that was a MAJOR part of my life when I worked in Japan.
This pack looks amazing, but I really wish that it had taken time to go up the gondola. As someone who skis a lot, gondolas take a good amount of time (15-30 minutes) to ride, but it makes it so much more rewarding to get to the top if you have to wait. also - why aren't there ski lifts? (ski lifts are basically gondolas except they take you up one ski run instead of the whole mountain, and instead of a box, ski lifts are benches.) The pack still looks amazing, but having gondolas as the only way to get up the mountain (asides from walking and climbing i guess) is pretty unrealistic.
Can you imagine the potential animation of falling over trying to get off a ski lift 😂 (definitely me the first time I went skiing)

What’s funny is that your sim takes one minute (in sim time) to go up a mountain, but an hour to eat cereal.
It would have been great if the shells in the town centre of Wakaba were small individual lots instead. So we could go in and add our own little shops around the festival space. Basically a functioning town centre as a mini shopping district. Missed opportunity for slightly more lots.
Aside from the train station being set dressing, there is also a notable large amount of set dressing cars and a gas station near the said train station. 🤣🤣 I do over all like this pack and definitely think that it is one of the best Sims 4 packs we have gotten in a long time. 🤩
Starting with Island Living, the TS4 team has been getting a little too comfortable adding too much set dressing. Idgaf how pretty the world is if I can’t interact with half of it.

@@aliceroared I think the problem is that the set dressing have creeped a bit to close. it was okey when it was you know outside the playing board like its in most game.
but when you have masive part of the map taken up by empty set dressing it gets weird.

I also feel it would have made more sense to add apartments to the modern neighbourhood instead of houses. Like the old neighbourhood looks a lot like old Kyoto with those beautiful old houses, but modern Kyoto (and most Japanese cities) is almost entirely apartments. I think that would have added that extra realism to the game and given us even more options.
Kyoto is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and yeah agreed.

Lol same XD who wears shoes 24 hours a day (except when bathing/showering/walking around in the nude)?? Even when sleeping they keep their slippers on if they were wearing a pair 😂 I literally also thought psychopath, but characters in movies wear shoes in their homes too a lot of the time. So at some point I thought it was just an American thing since I saw that on American TV lol
YES when i play any sims games it drives me crazy.
I’m english, and I generally just like wearing shoes😂 i’m not a slippers fan but i’ll be wearing my converse and unless i’m on my bed or going to put my legs under me on the sofa i tend to keep my shoes on

In buy mode there's a no-shoes sign you can place on a wall. If placed on the lot, Sims will take their shoes off. I'm assuming it will work in other worlds as well?
I watched part of the gameplay livestream, and the Sentiment System looks amazing!
For anyone who didn't see it, the wife actually felt sad because her husband felt angry and tense. EMPATHY!! For another sim!! And luckily, that part's going to be in the update.
Gotta give a round of applause to the Sims Team here 👏👏👏👏👏 The Lifestyle aspect is only for Snowy Escape, so I can see why they pushed that as a feature of the pack. But I'm so happy that a game-changing aspect like empathy is going to be given to everyone.
So does the Life Style only work in the pack´s areas or, if you purchase the pack, in the rest of the game as well? I´m confused now :)

And honestly? It's kinda meh. Sentiments are great, imho. But I don't even notice the lifestyles most of the time, except when they get cranky. Like, if you have a sim that got the Outdoorsy lifestyle, they get tense if they're inside a lot.

Be prepared for eccentric humour (which her fans love as it’s never mean and she often makes gentle fun of herself) and mispronunciation though (she sometimes mispronounces English words and in her latest video the dropdown info lets her viewers know she used google to pronounce a Japanese word but viewers pointed out the word should be pronounced differently). Her runaway teen, single dad and Cobbs family LPs are my favourites. Some people don’t seem to like that she wants her channel to be a positive place but I appreciate that. She’s very open about her anxiety and most aspects of her personal life in a way that makes many people feel they know her and aren’t alone in some experiences.

I loved that Sims team collaborated with simmers but I think it would have been nice of them to pick at least 1 Japanese simmer. You know good ol' representation. I think in James Turner’s video of how he did the build, he said he added one of the new mini half walls around the platform and then put the wallpapers on the half wall. It gave the illusion of the platform having wallpapers.

Owww I think the hot springs touch of having to rinse yourself before entering is kinda cute. The whole concept, bc it's Japan inspired, is very cute, I like the little details. It's been a while, I never thought that EA would actually make something decent. Not necessary, but at least decent.
the japanese apartment videos are insane on youtube...I can't wait for the pack...but i question why the lack of japanese creators...we should have had builds by japanese creators who live and breath the building style. I don't want to hate on any of the youtubers they partnered with as I love a couple of them but Japanese pack man, come on.
This would require EA to spend money on the Sims and actually put effort
fully agree. although i don't live in japan, my heritage is japanese, and i am seriously impressed at the level of cultural accuracy in this pack. there are some parts that irk me a little (such as the torii gates which are only outside of shinto shrines, even though the big religious site in the pack is a temple). but mostly i'm annoyed with the inaccuracies in the gamechanger builds, because that could have been easily avoided by letting japanese or japanese diaspora creators work on some of the lots. also, REPRESENTATION MATTERS and the sims youtube scene is overwhelmingly white from anglosphere countries so why not give opportunities to others for once instead of constantly relying on people from a very small and very homogeneous pool?
I mean in theory with fitness stuff you could imagine having the climbing wall to practice for your real rock climbing on boliday if you're getting very into story.
It's just that it's no more work to go to the gym than pop to the mountain in sims 4 loading screens closed worlds no transport lol 😂

LITERALLY everything I said that would be problematic with this pack and how SHALLOW it would be and how much it would re-use things we already have in the game..were spot on. The people that were defending them and telling ME I was being negative... well TOLD YOU SO.

@S C He is going to review this pack! He talked about it a bit on Twitter, I believe he's got a review scheduled for November 20th (we'll see if he can get it out then, since he's been experiencing the game crashes a lot of us have been getting).
He also mentioned a possible future video about Batuu, but it won't be a full review because he "didn't want to dignify it with a proper review"

I'm kind of surprised by how many people are excited about this pack! The items are cool for sure and there is more gameplay, but it doesn't look like it will be enough. I for one can't imagine being entertained by sims going down a hill for too long, and the hot springs do look beautiful but they don't bring that much newness to the game? And I'm kinda appalled at the world Plumbella showed, it's so annoying when they add empty shells just for decoration! I'm glad the rental lots are coming as a general update though because that will motivate me to finally get Island Living lol.
I could listen to Jess talk all day, I always feel sad when the video is coming to end.

I honestly first thought this was a game pack and was overall impressed. Like are they finally listening to some of the critique and make something that is worth the money. However, seeing that it feels empty and incomplete yet again (for €40,-) just made me a bit less excited.

I do wish there were like 4-5 more blank lots so you could have a lot more people living there and also still have 2 rental lots

Sims 4 in a nutshell...with that said, I am so happy you like this pack because you look for the same things as I do with EPs. I'm super excited for this one, and I'm glad it's Plumbella approved!
God the more I think about it the more I'm like, this is a good pack (one of the best we've had in awhile), but it's missing things. Wakaba is a glorified shell and should have had actual (even small) lots. Strollers for toddlers so they can come on hikes, populated town centers for once, PONDS, more town lots in general, things that were in this dlc that really should have been in a free update ect...

Are we surprised about the amount of shells and sets? We went from willow creek where every lot was playable and only the background was set to GF, DU, EL and now this pack all consisting of way too many shells between playable lots. Honestly how hard would it be to give us more lots and just leave them blank???
I’m pleasantly surprised but I’m still going to wait a few weeks to purchase in case opinions change. The gondola and train are so disappointing, they could’ve at least put a second option for you to take a trip up the gondola in which it’s slow and with a plumbob over a carriage just like how you described the train should’ve been, that way you get both options. At this point I just want the sims 4 to be over but even then I’m worried about how bad they’ll mess up 5

Yours is the first video I wanted to see about this. idk why, you're honesty and the way you talk maybe. You just always seem to cover the things I want to hear about most, and we usually share a similar opinion on it. I went through a rollercoaster of being amazed, happy, excited, and disappointed, but then excited again while I watched this. Seeing all the great new stuff that I ACTUALLY LOOK FORWARD TO was really nice. I actually WANT this pack, I want it in my game. The build/buy, the CAS, I already knew from the trailers I would have probably bought the pack just for those things. I love the styles. But there's just SO MUCH MORE that seemed so promising about it. I was really scared that once we got to see how it was in-game, it'd crush my hopes and dreams and be a big disappointment. But, I'm pleasantly surprised. Journey to Batuu had me losing faith in EA, and fearing for the sims franchise. And while they still seem to have issues with things being empty in the world, at least only one of the neighborhoods seems to have that issue in a noticeable way. The train and gondola were a bit of a letdown, but I expected they would be. Honestly, I'm glad you can interact with the gondola at all, I thought both of them would be set dressing, like the train unfortunately is. I'll say it now, I am in a toxic relationship with the sims 4, and I am going back to them after they hurt me again. I love this pack, I'm buying it for sure. But, this DOES NOT mean that all is well and fine. I'm not going to just ignore all the bad and forgive that easily, as they've only given us this one good thing after a really bad thing, while we still have a lot of other issues in the game. While this pack is a start, they still have a lot of work to do to re-earn my trust.
I'll forgive failures (batuu) and the fact they ignored the community for years AFTER I get to see the ins and outs of this pack for myself, see the new fixed skin tones in-game, and see them actually trying to make the game better over time (by listening to us, giving us what we've been begging for) then I might start to come around again. This is progress. But we need more. Much more.
... Unless of course if the next pack they drop is generations, and they make it almost exactly like the sims 3 generations but better. If that happens, then I will probably forgive everything, forget Batuu ever happened, and love the sims like it's my wife.
What can I say, it's a toxic relationship. A generations pack would be like the "make-up woohoo" after a really long rough patch in the relationship.
