Gladys Knight has one of the best voices in the business. She and the guys are very entertaining. Great hosts.
Gladys was smoking hot in her prime , still over the years every time I hear her sing Midnight Train To Georgia it gives me chills when she hits that I got to I got to go at the end of it.
God broke the mold when he made that talented and beautiful woman.
Happy 80th birthday Gladys 🎵👑🎶🕺🏾🎤💜💜
The Empress is still going strong, looks like she's in her final year of touring.
Finally, Spooky Tooth is performing "I am the Walrus", that clip is monumental and greatly anticipated, thank you 🙏💎🎸
It was so psychedelic! I was amazed!
Big shout out to Mr. Curtis Mayfield. Great to see him doing “Right on for the Darkness” on the Midnight Special. A very underrated artist doing a very underrated track.
I am sure that Curtis is in Rock and Roll Heaven and appreciates your comment!
He passed on in 1999.
I didnt appreciate Gladys and the Pips in the seventies because I was a teenager. I sure do now and she was funny, talented and everything else that is good.
Gladys knight is great and she is the bomb
Gladys Knight and the Pips rock! So cool
Gladys Knight has one of the best voices in Pop music. They are great entertaining hosts.
Wow, Gladys Knight kicked ass!
The last time I heard singing like that, was the last time I watched The Midnight Special.
Spooky Toothed rendition of I am the walrus was righteous. Love it. Some thirty five years ago a couple buddies and I use to play Strawberry Fields Forever with a different spin on it. Dang I miss them days. RIP Jodie brudda.
Nothing better than Midnight Special and SNL in the 70's. What a great Era of music.
I love Miss Gladys.
I had the pleasure of seeing her perform in Smokey Joe's Cafe on the very night of my 40th birthday, way back in 2000.
It was an extra special treat because she wasn't the featured performer on that tour but was on that particular date.
Looking forward to seeing this show.
Gladys and the Pips always delivered stellar performances.
I saw her in 95 at state fair
@@clinttaylor3779
She's a beautiful soul
@@Royale_with_CheezeI'm jealous! Missed the live again tonight. Lots going on with the grandson.
You were so very lucky - what a birthday gift!
Yes they were really great tonight I love the showmanship & choreography! Gladys has a beautiful voice and is a very pretty lady she had the men swooning, so sweetly.
I love her red dress … my favorite color.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze
I’d say so ⭐️⭐️⭐️!
btw on a sillier note - every time I see your “pic” I get hungry for a 🍔, is there a story behind it? Am a curious 🐈⬛ …
Jim Weatherly was a terrific songwriter. Among other songs, he wrote "Midnight Train to Georgia", "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me".
All those were greats, Gladys' redition make them classics
I had no idea before last night who he was and that Jim wrote all of those romantic 💘 fantastic songs. He’s very handsome and has a great voice, also. That’s called grade “A” TALENT. 😅
@@KittyGrizGriz Me neither, I was shocked when Gladys said that
When music really was music! Loved Gladys Knight
Another great show with lots of surprises! Jobriath was pretty unique and interesting, and Spooky Tooth was great! Even Les Variations was an interesting group! All the rest were great, as expected. Thanks, TMS!😀😊💜
Yes, while I've never seen him or heard much music, Jobriath was massively hyped at the time, as the first openly gay rock star signed to a major label. He signed with management to a 10 year contract but, of course, got screwed and his album tanked. Actually at this show, one of the songs he was supposed to do was scrapped coz it allegedly was sadomasochistic. He retired in 1975 and was one of the first 'stars' to die of Aids in 1983. Quite fascinating actually
The music from the 1970s was so good. I'm glad that we have these uploads of The Midnight Special. Gladys Knight is great. So are Spooky Tooth. Cheers! ✌️
@@timguzz8844 Wow. That was brave of him at that time. Sad to hear how he passed. 😢✌️
He died because he got someone else's fiecalmatter.Mixed in with his bloodstream. no one else is fault but his own
One of the best episodes yet. I was 9 when this was broadcast and I can't believe what was going on around me. I was too young to appreciate it then, but it's awesome to be able to see it now.
I was 8 back then.
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
Gladys is amazing!
Loved all these great artists. What a great show!
One of my first introductions to Rock n Roll was actually via a French-Moroccan Orthodox Jewish Hasidic rock band called “Raya Mehemna” formed by newly religious French rock musicians who put out their first album in the early 1980s. The drummer and lead singer was Isaac Bitton. That’s him right there drumming and singing in Les Variations - recognized him right away. This is great footage!! Tx!
@unityloveful
I LOVE ALL OF YOU❤
Love you, too!💜💜💜✌
❤❤❤🙂.
Right back at'cha, Pynky!!
We all love you too, sweet new friend!🙋🏼♀️💓💓💓
🤟💓💓💓
Spooky Tooth was amazing!
I’m here for Spooky Tooth with Gary Wright! ❤❤❤
... and Mick Jones of Foreigner on guitar!
@@dgtlgrfiti5551 Yes! Love Mick Jones and Foreigner I was glad to see them several years ago with Mick, unfortunately without Lou Graham on lead vocals but still a great show. Headknocker & Dirty White Boy are my favorite songs. Great band!
... and drummer Mike Kellie, later of the British band _The Only Ones_ - here's Mike in action on "Another Girl, Another Planet" (1978), one of my all-time favourite power-pop anthems 😃 [ruclips.net/video/ilDD5SeHxXE/видео.html ].
... And Gary Wright the Dream Weaver on keyboards!
@@garyhenson117 Thanks for the information on Mike I’ve never heard of him before, it’s fun discovering new bands and great music - together!
The next episode coming up from March 15, 1974 was hosted by The Pointer Sisters, and also features appearances by The Butts Band, The Crusaders, Focus, Dan Hicks, Billy Paul, and The Strawbs.
Do you know which episode will be featured on Mondays members only upload?
SPOOKY TOOTH Great with Mick Jones before forming FOREIGNER with great guitar riffand that spectacular voice .
original guitarist Luther Grossvenor had just left the band ,did a solo lp and then Joined Mott the Hoople as Ariel bender
My lord, I just LOVE The Empress!
wow this has some extremely choice Curtis Mayfield that I have never seen before. amazing
Another Friday night of The Midnight Special. Listening to the show on my 12 speaker sound system.
Twelve! Wow, I'll bet that's awesome!✌️
@@StephanieJeanne I have to replace the windows every Saturday. JK LOL
@@DannyHaralson-ol1io 😂🙌
12 Speakers, izzat 12 cabinets or just 12 drivers. I usta have some old Pioneers with 6 speaks in each cab, so I could say the same back in 1975
Reminds me of my stereo in the 70s, some in each corner, a wall of speakers on each side of the amp 12-inch woofer, 4ft cabinet, and when my parents were home a set of headphones (Cans) that took up both sides of my head, lol
Great to see the great Gladys and the Pips
No doubt Gladys is the star shinning brighter here; Still, Richie was a great artist, a street's poet, with a huge sensibility and emotion in his performances.
Man these Midnight Special videos are morphing me back to my teenage years in the 1970's.
That first song by the Gladys and the Pips could have been a hit. Very good arrangement, and catchy.
Liked the song by Les Variations as well.
Curtis Mayfield’s guitarist is highly inventive!!!!
Pretty sure he was using an E- Bow.
Im white and 55 Gladys so cute and talented
I was apprehensive to watch this, as the original recording of Midnight Train to Georgia is so outstanding, I thought no way Gladys Knight can be as good live. She was actually even better! Incredible performance of a timeless song.
Thank you so much for sharing this, for those of us missed is since it was on past our bedtime. 😉
Excellent show! 🎉
Though they're all great musicians and bands, the two I wish I could have seen live back then would have been Gladys and Mayfield.
This Midnight Special was Jobriath's "Worlds Premier" apperantly a 3rd song was rejected as being to "Sado-masichistic". He was heavily hyped, but never caught on with mainstream listeners. He died in 1981 due to AIDS.
A good episode.
This is 2 days before my 14th birthday (Royal has his B-Day a few days before), This is the episode where I fell in love with Gladys, and developed the strong desire to be a Pip! Richie Havens is a class act, Curtis Mayfield always 1st rate, Spooky Tooth will own I am a Walrus, The rest are obscure to me, but when they play they may bring back a memory. Stellar line up, I'm warming up the Way Back Machine for a wonder evening!
Have a happy birthday Rob!
@@StephanieJeanne 🎉😉
*Happy Birthday, Rob!!!*

What’s your favorite kind of b’d cake??
Mine’s German Chocolate 🍫
superb episode
Gladys was one of my first crushes. I just wanted to kiss those lips in the worst way.
I'm very nearly certain the line started behind me.
And its pretty long!
I could be wrong but ..no, no..I don't think so.🤘😎🤘
Rock on y'all!
When I watch this as a kid I wanted to be a Pip SO Bad! Partly because I could see Gladys ever night
These uploads are so great. Thank you!!!
Gladys Knight kicking it out- they sound so good! Beautiful!
Another well spent Friday night!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Jobriath was supposed to be the next big thing, there was all this hype and then boom goes to Dynamite and away he went
kinda reminds me of David Bowie.
I’m laughing at his pretentiousness. Bubblehead?
@@moorlock2003 given some of the other things that were going on at the time I don't know that he's any more pretentious than anyone else. Watch some of the Genesis shows around this time and some of the odd outfits Peter Gabriel was wearing on stage. David Bowie of course was always pushing the envelope and Todd Rundgren went on the midnight special wearing some outlandish costume and makeup that damn near killed his career or at least hampered his top 40 success
@@AldousHuxleysCat True. I was into Bowie, Elton John, and Alice Cooper at the time but I wouldn’t listen to any of them by choice now. I got rid of all their records long ago.
Gladys looks hot here😘
I didn't know Jobriath appeared on the show! This alone makes this episode historic, he's amazing and so overshadowed in rock history.
Gladys knight and the Pips performed very well and they were entertaining hosts as well.
Love how GK starts the first song low key and by the end blows the doors off! Powerhouse act. They must have hosted a half dozen episodes?
They were very popular in the 70s.
I am the walrus
I get what your saying
With 4 chickens I am the egg man!
That band with the violinist, and singing drummer ?
That dude in front center stage ?
A pre-incarnation of David Lee Roth ! 😳
All the time Gladys Knight & the Pips have done the Midnight Train to Georgia on TMS. They still don't know how to end the song.
Hey guys, another Monday has passed. We had Ep. 341 with blondie. A great show, enjoying my membership. Thanks, THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. What's next on the membership page?
Love the clips of Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jobriath and Curtis Mayfield. The Jobriath in particular is cool because there's very little footage of him, and because the music is good glam rock. Les Variations are a pleasant surprise -- had passed over their albums in used bins for years, but their two performances are excellent, particularly "Morocco Roll" (a play on words?).
Never heard of Jobriath. He was a cross between David Bowie and Dylan Mulvaney without Bowies talent.
Yeah I dont recall him at all myself seems he was quickly forgotten
I miss you all!! I hope to be back soon!!
Les Variations.. amazing groove... great musicianship... song and singing was not up to snuff .. but damn that groove!
Bass player giving droog/glam/Dennis Dunaway feels...
 for Fresh Flavor 20:18
I was asleep in London UK when this replay was broadcast so I was going to check the 'live' chat to see the reaction to Spooky Tooth's performance but I see it's been disabled for this episode. AFIK that's unprecedented - anyone know why it was turned off?
Yep, Jobraith was the next big thing. Wonder whatever happened to him?
He died of AIDS in 1983.
@@DerekDominoes
… Oh my that’s so sad. A very good friend of mine from work got AIDS from the blood platelets he used for hemophilia. He had a wife and a young daughter, his wife left him - took their daughter & moved back home several hours away. It destroyed him he started drinking heavily & died by suicide 10ish years ago. He was a very sweet - funny man. R.I.P. 💔😿
Dang disappointed only one Spooky Tooth cut. Mick Jones that guitar tone was crazy good
Was that Gary Wright on keyboards?
@@mxxjsssure was and he thought up their name too
@@stephengriffin1428
He did? Do you know the “backstory” on their band name? I’ve always wondered as it’s so unique. Ty
@@KittyGrizGriz All I know is that Chris Blackwell hooked up Gary Wright with a British band called Art and Gary wrote a turntable hit for them called Better By You Better Than Me. Spooky Tooth should have been enormously popular but Gary of course would go on to have massive hits. RIP Gary.
@@stephengriffin1428
“Better By You Better Than Me” is a pretty cool song title … I’ll have to dig it up and have a listen. Gary was vastly talented I’d read he was studying to become a doctor but his true love - music won out. Thankfully.
Yes R.I.P. Dream Weaver ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Les Variarions hot, gotta check them out
Spooky tooth guitarist ? Mick Jones of foreigner !
unfortunatley YES!
Spooky Tooth keyboards? Gary Wright of Dreamweaver!
I thank the lord that there are channels I can watch like this one where the songs don't sound like they were made by someone who actually knows how to do music right.
A glutton for punishment, huh? I would argue that there are actually several musical acts here--Gladys Knight and Curtis Mayfield most of all--who know a lot about how to do music right.
@@harmonium8198 Well, I did mean all of these acts. Today's music is starting to sound like it's being created by AI version 1.0.
