    Video Transcript:
Hi, I'm Kaye DeSelms Dent with Dent Coulson Elder Law, here with an elder law minute for you. These videos are intended to educate you about the elder care journey, which begins earlier in life than you might think. We hope that you find them useful, and if you have further questions, please call us at Dent Coulson Elder Law.
I'm here to talk to you about the importance of aligning your assets to match your estate plan. What does that mean? Well, that means that if your will, for instance, says, "I leave my car to my son Gary," your car should not be titled jointly with your husband. Because if you die first, your husband gets the car, and Gary doesn't. It also means that if you say, "I want everything left to my spouse," but all of your assets have beneficiary designations to your children, well, your kids get the assets.
Beneficiary designations are contractual, and they supersede your will. The same issue applies to really any asset, whether it be your house, cars, or financial assets. You need to talk with an estate planning attorney about how to properly align your assets, each and every one of them, so that your estate plan actually works with them. You create one smooth pipeline through which your assets flow after your death, so that they are distributed according to your wishes. If you don't do that, it's very likely, and it's very common, that your assets will go out in different directions, and possibly, if not probably, not as you intended.
At Dent Coulson Elder Law, we don't talk to you just about what you want your will to say, but we talk to you about what you want your will to mean and how to effectuate that meaning, again, so that your final wishes are honored. We'll be happy to talk with you. Call today to schedule your consult.
