      Shorts that are supposed to be like comedy skits (even if I think they're not funny) or just clips from podcasts and stuff to showcase content are fine, but so much of it is designed to either be addicting to children or just spread false or incomplete information that it's not worth engaging with it. I almost miss the days where let's play content was the content people hated for how prolific and artificial it was and cringe personalities like Fred and RWJ were so prevalent because this kind of nu-content is abysmal

    My younger brother watches shit in this format all the time on youtube shorts. I also saw him throw a tantrum the other day after being told he would have to spend longer than 15 minutes on his math homework. The internet ruining kids' attention spans is a very real problem

    • @justsomehalofan4386

      I'm in my early 20s, I think a lot of it started with the rise of smart phones/other smart electronics, social media, along with parents giving their children these devices (with unrestricted access to the internet) at such young ages (cause they are either to lazy or too busy to tend to their own children). The worst part is we already seeing the affects of that on both late Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and it's only bound to get worse in the coming decades when they eventually enter the work world.

    • @AsperTheGhost
      @AsperTheGhost 4 месяца назад

      Technically "inner speech" is only found in 25% of the population. That accounts for a separate "audible" voice in your head. (Not to be confused with audio hallucinations). While some people can mull over ideas in their head, not everyone has the "voice" that some people do. Some people can't even think in pictures or visualize anything significant in their heads. It's all just "concepts". They aren't dumb by any means, they just cant picture stuff.

There are a lot of people who do not have a VERBAL internal monologue, but they might be hungry and think about food they want to eat, or think about stopping what they’re doing and getting food. They don’t need to think the words ‘I’m hungey, I need food’ but they still have that thought process happening.

    To add to what Fringy noted about lessening attention spans. There has been tons of conversation around TikTok brain, a phenomenon where people are noticing their attention span, cognitive abilities, and memory have been significantly reduced due to the overuse of short form social media. Many of the stories I came across were quite shocking - young people not able to remember simple things, feeling anxious if not being fed constant entertainment, and getting bored of in person conversions within second of engaging in them. Perusing those discussions boards made it clear to me that there really are real and serious consequences to the abuse of social media sites like TikTok.

      They're not funny, they're just confusing, and I firmly believe that the "jokes" are that your brain gets overstimulated with all the loud noises and fast forwarded visuals that you laugh by default just to cope with the confusion. The Onion has been going downhill for many years but get ready for the decline to accelerate- it was recently purchased by a group that includes NBC's former "misinformation" expert, who despite his title was less of an opponent and more of a proponent of misinfo. I'm sort of with Fringy on this issue. If I'm doing something that doesn't require attention, I can do a podcast as "second monitor" content. Think of doing dishes. Mowing the grass. You know, mindless tasks.
      I cannot follow a podcast and truly play a game. Having to pay attention to the game makes me miss things people are saying.
      I'm not with Rag's comparisson about being in a conversation. A conversation automatically demands attention because you're supposed to respond. It has interaction. You don't need to constantly pay visual attention to people because your mind is on what people are saying. But a podcast doesn't involve me. Just tuning out something you're only paying passive attention to happens automatically when you also have something you're paying active attention to. Say moving from a random encounter in Dsrk Souls to a boss fight. I could lusten to EFAP during random encounters. But not during boss fights.

    Something must have happened to attention spans overall, if not at least the constant need for dopamine. The amount of restless and easily distracted people (especially young adults, teenagers and kids) seem to have increased a lot.
    Maybe it's just my personal experience, 'cause I don't have numbers to back it up, but something really seems to have happened with a lot of people's ability to focus on things that aren't giving near-constant gratification.

    I think being able to focus on something is more depending on who you are. Like with EFAP I’ll put it on while I’m at work. However, I have a hard time, if I’m at home, being able to focus on just one thing in general. It’s why I don’t watch much TV anymore unless I’m REALLY invested in it and most of it is crap these days so i end up just playing my guitar or video games which keeps my mind occupied enough with different things. TikTok and social media has just diluted the senses and people’s taste in general, just look at Disney Star Wars lol
