Top 10 PPG Tips & Tricks

- Опубликовано: 13 июл 2022
- This video is my Top 10 recommendations for using PPG Automotive Paint. I will list them all here in the description, you can copy & paste or print it and put it in your paint room for future reference. In no particular order here they are.
1: Add extra thinners to the basecoat, this will help dieback. Here in Australia, they recommend 15% thinners, I recommend you double it and use 30%. If you can get some T492 this will also help, but for now, it's not available in Australia.
2: Add extra thinners to the clear also, LVC-136 & D8173 clears are very thick and gluggy, I find adding an extra 30% of the reducer works excellent, so if they ask for 100g of thinners I will pit 130g So it's 3:1:1+30% of the 1.
3: Preclean panels with microfibre cloths, I find this gives a deep clean and also stops a funny fisheye reaction that can occur on humid days.
4: I find the Wet-On-Wet (Sealer) primer can profile if you don't prime the full panel, this results in an uneven surface for the basecoat. So generally as a rule of thumb, I do entire panels or avoid using it where possible.
5: Sometimes the suggested 'G Shade' primer is way off, if your gut says to use a different shade, trust it.
6: Create a colour library, the Spectro is hit and miss, more miss than hit!! Although I hear it's not as bad in the USA, possibly a regional issue. Colour chips before Spectro!!
7: For whatever reason, the reps don't recommend using a wet bed for metallic colour blends, I highly recommend using some T490 mixed with 20% thinner on light metallic blend panels.
8: Dieback is bad with PPG, a bake between base & clear can help, I believe T492 would help also, but as I say, it's not available in Australia.
9: Be sure to strain your colour, it's very clumpy & lumpy.
10: Be sure to read your Tech Data Sheets, there's lots of helpful info in there, you never know, you might learn a thing or two. They should all be on the paint computer.
Bonus Tip 1: You don't need to use SATA guns for your basecoat.
Bonus Tip 2: Check your viscosity with a viscosity cup. Having the right viscosity is important.

You wouldn’t believe how many painters have never seen a zahn cup in their entire life lol
Super duper crucial mixing up for spraying a plane!
Well worth your effort Gunny. Lots of info for me to think about. Thanks.
Good to hear your tips, in the UK we have PPG but also Max Meyer which is basically PPG but under another name. It works the same way, I get on really well with it, I found the suggested grey shades can be wrong too and go for gut instinct.
Hey gunny thanks for sharing your thoughts and wisdom it really helps a lot especially for the beginner cheers man
Great stuff Gunny, learning alot from your channel, thanks!
Great content, thks for your suggestions,on how to avoid costly mistakes
Yes I start to use the microfiber towels and it works well
Some useful tips there for those that use PPG, I found that using microfibre cloths really changed my paint finishes from the base laying down better and a much cleaner finish with the clearcoat👍 I bet you are pleased you are back using Standox now Gunny and from what I've seen on your Insta page you are loving it👌🙏 John UK.
Thanks gunny, always appreciate the tip videos- I was painting a wing last week and I had the fish eye effect like you said, I baked between the base and clear and that seemed to help, I’ll try a microfibre next time as it was exactly as you said with the panel wipe and G-wipes. I like the PPG stuff though- spent years using their Delfleet and Deltron stuff 👍🏻
Just done a bonnet/hood and thinned base and clear and it's so much better! Cheers gunny👍
Haha, I definitely hear you on the spectro! Sometimes it's bang on, others it's a mile away 🤣 I'm with you on overthinning the base too. In the UK they recommend up to 30% anyway. And try the t492 if you get chance, it does make a worthwhile difference.
All very good advice
Thank you so much brother!!
T492+494 is a game changer. Been using it for 3 years and dieback issues are very rare now
Also, blacks are definitely thick and yellows are definitely thin!
👍 Wszystko jak w zegarku Szwajcarskim. Super 👌
Some painters live by what the recommendation on mixing sheet said if I don't like how something is spraying I'll try something a little different not crazy but like you said add more thinner if something don't come out right you have to do something as long as what you do isn't going to totally screw it up.
Great tips
Some sound advice Gunny, it's not only PPG I have had some of these issues with two other premium brands.
I pretty much always thin my clear by 30% additional ESPECIALLY for the last 2 coats. I prefer to lay down a tack then 3 thinner coats vs lay a tack then 2 heavy, I feel it looks less chunky. Usually shoot my clear using the tulip head Awata gun because it really atomizes the clear.
Great video gunny. The shop im working in currently has the octoral eco plus system which as far as i know is identical to envirobase; when using t490 (w23 in eco plus) as a wet bed for blends, do you let it flash off between applying your colour or not? I've heard conflicting information from reps and TDS.
Hey I finally got to trial a dv1-c clear gun. I wanted to like it but had problems replicating peel. I use prolite with 1.3 te10 for clear and it out sprayed the crap out of the dv1, any chance you could do a prolite vs dv1 clear coat edition? And show how you found to control that dv1 gun. That'd be awesome if you could, thanks. P.s. nice to see your Orange peel in videos has flattened out again. Noticed when you started ppg it was nice but not your regular
Same issue with the Delfleet system too.
I reduce black 10 percent and everything else to 20 percent. Don’t have any problems with die back.
That is the right thickness of the basecoat and clearcoat in the measuring cup how many seconds must it measure through the cup
Great watch some tips il use some I won’t. Good video 👍
What works for me may not work for you. Always good to be open minded enough to try something new
@@TheGunmanChannel 100% agree we do have different climates as well though which we have to bare in mind :-)
Yea thort say thing bout the chunks in the colour when used it at tafe. The orange peel i struggled with straight up with my devilbiss , had to lay it down really wet, on verge of running. But ppg is no longer there. 😆
Used envirobase for 8 years. 136 clear at .8 reducer is fine you just need higher pressure for atomization. Never ever reduced base more than 20 percent and the coverage with 2 60 percent coats is brilliant including colours like 3r3 or coarse 1co. Wet on wet everything with a blend out reducer and you will never have problems 👌
I've since moved back to Standox and PPG is absolute garbage compared. There is no aspect where PPG is better.
Cool will have to check it out
@@TheGunmanChannelppg is the most popular water system, must be the painter, I make $130k usd a year easy using EHP. But I am a real pro.
@@TheGunmanChannelyou where fired or QUIT and where MOVED back to the minor leagues, no wonder the other painters didn’t take a liking to you, you are a drunk or just a whinny sub par painter blaming everything but his own entry level skill. Keep doing garage jobs, you changing jobs as is, is a bad look gunny
PPG is the 👑 of automotive paints, it matches! Axalta is colorblind 😂
Ppg has terrible matches especially since they took away chips that camera is awful!
@@ricardorivera2836stick to painting cabs then vato

Even though I am not a painter I still keep learning and having some useful information from this channel .I want to spray the parts, accessories on my car. What is the better paint and where to get it? Have done the research some stores sells concept paint, debeer do not have good reputation.
You should look at cromax solvent. It's great and easy to use at home
@@TheGunmanChannel could you please tell where to get the Cromax? The one you use on the Jazz? Thank you
I'm doing a full restoration on my XY would you recommend cromax or PPG haven't painted in 4 years I'm a licenced painter been a while. vermillion fire clear over base is the colour. I want it Flat off the gun no runs🤞
Will the over reduction help with micro pop when using 2021 clear?
so on paint manager do i select 30% reduction option instead of using the typical 20%? Im new to ppg so ive been having cloudiness in my metallics... and not sure how to spray the wet bed because some peple said spray at the edges of the damage area or light mist across the whole panel
have you tried ppg d8175 clear? How hard/scratch resistant is it?
Is the sand paper in america the same grades as australia say 400 grit in oz the same size grit in america and other countrys no ones ever been abel to tell me?
What spray gun and what needle size do you recommend for ppg waterbase metallic and solvent?
1.2 mm for PPG waterbase
What's your top 10 gun for clear coat in 2022?
I was just about to ask the same!!!
Hey mate i been watching you on RUclips for some years now I have learned a lot from you tips wise how to get beautiful paint job ok thanks a lot men ,am from Jamaica but am in the cayman island, question fior automotive we here ultra high solid clear 92-60 hardener 38-72 can you give me some tips on how to get a really good finish with that clear cote,i use a sata jet century 3000 1-3 ok,so please throw it out there an please i could really love to get a respond on it ok mate, thanks for program it does helps us here a lot.
Just went to I a new shop switching from axalta Chromabase to envirobase. Been about 2 months now, so far I'm way happier with Envirobase then I was with Chromabase. We use EC530 clear, and It seems to lay down very smooth and not much peel. What I do get is kind of like "boils" or "specks" in my clear, not sure what the actual term for it is. They do sand and polish out pretty easy but would like to avoid the issue all together. Any tips from you or anyone out there can talk me where I'm going wrong? I don't think it's "pop" from basecoat but maybe I'm wrong? Tend to be able to bury it with my clear if you dump the clear on heavy enough
Make sure viscosity from 23-28 seconds out of a Din 4
I prefer ppg solvent than the water system better for sure
Hi gun man
Love to hear your thoughts in the hb body clear
I'm not sure I've ever seen it in Aus.
@@TheGunmanChannel body shop sells it Hb body hs it’s about $170 for a kit I used it for years holds up well
@@carblingautomotive that's cheap!!
When are you going to review the Iwata w400 series 2?
They still haven't been released in Australia and Iwata won't let distributors cross borders
@@TheGunmanChannel can't wait for the review.
👍👍👍👍👍
Do you happen to have discount code to use for "spraygunsdirect" wanting to buy the FG5 & ANI regulator. As you recommended them many years ago
Unfortunately I don't, but their prices are very low already.
@@TheGunmanChannel That's a shame, prices sure are reasonable i'm just scraping the bottom of the barrel to fund them.
I get random fisheye paint separation going on in the base
Try applying it lighter, usually sorts it.
Called splash....lighten your application
How is it that PPG is making tech sheets so far off compared to what is being used in the field? Is it how they say their product is better for the environment?
I have a feeling that's what it is
Gunny what do you mean by die back ?
The gloss dies, it's noticeable under high powered led lights.
People seem to be blaming the basecoat for this. I’m using Deltron 8131 with Envirobase water basecoat. Never get die back at all. But when using Spectrol Clear I did get die back randomly but not on every job. Switched to 8131 not had it once
You got problems covering because your using to much reducer. Yes sealer will make a difference but if you are over reducing your paint will not cover as good
1.3 spraygun price please
Which spray gun are you talking about?
Ppg water dies back repeatedly. Buff- die back. Buff again- die back.
The only way I’ve found with that issue in water is to wait till it gases out after couple of days and sand the crap of it without rubbing though and wait again and reclear it.
Never had die back in the Uk on Meyer or Envirobase. Be good to find out why some people are getting it
The only tip you need is to actually read the data sheet. Particularly the part where it instructs you to apply the basecoat in light coats and avoid heavy application to prevent issues. Go look at that blue falcon respray video and you'll see someone doing the exact opposite. It'll never dry properly lathering it on that heavy. I've always liked your content and reviews but you're really far off the mark with your opinions on enviro. I've used it for years and I've never seen anyone have so many issues with it.
So what, we're expected to do 7 coats just to get it covered? Because we're doing so little per coat. PPG themselves massively miss the mark when their data sheets say 24-26 seconds viscosity for base but they recommend 15% reducer, so as far as I'm concerned I'll make it up as I go because they can't get their own system straight. PPG colours are terrible, I moved to a Standox shop this week and haven't matched one colour all week. PPG is so slow and the colours don't cover well at all.
@@TheGunmanChannel 1 very light dust coat followed by 2-3 medium coats gets me there on 90% of colours with the right grey underneath. I don't have a problem with people using a viscosity cup, 15% can definitely be too thick in winter without a heated tinter cabinet.
Or a Walcom Thermodry. Give consistent heat no matter what time of year. Its a game changer
Were a prestige smash shop in Oz and we use ppg enviro and it does not have any issues with coverage for us and we just use it as directed and no dramas
We’re new to it but also no issues. Love it to be honest
# 9 dudeeee ! Everytime it happens i think the same . “That chunk of yellow would have been helpfull 🥲” .
