I picked up on great Australian and NZ music after being an exchange student in 1980 in NZ. Returning home to US, it was a struggle to always find the imports. It was always bit a shame Cold Chisel never really made it outside of Oz, cos in Australia these guys where monster huge, and still considered on of the most important ozzie bands of all time.
In my opinion this is the definitive version of Bow River. Check out those killer harmonies in the beginning of the song. Barnsey and Mossy had voices that perfectly complemented each other.
It's the right version, but is it missing a solo? Or am I mixing it up with another version? I mean this is *definitely* the right version, no question. They tried to recreate the magic but never quite topped it.
Agreed. the original album version doesn't come anywhere close. This live version was the one which they included on the 1991 compilation album "Chisel".
@@Cynwidion That’s because Chisel was, in heart and mind, a full blooded live band. I read Barnesey’s autobiographies and he explained that they only ever felt at home on stage, not in the studio

God how I love this song! Whenever I have a crap day at work I crank this up in my car on the way home and belt out the song with Mossy and Jimmy. It has kept me sane for many, many years. AND I LOVE THAT HARMONICA!!!

I've always loved this song , arguably the best song on Circus Animals . Its great the way Jimmy backs up Ian . I think that is where Barnsey is at his best , backing or harmonizing with Mossy or Richard Clapton or anyone . How about Phil's bass ? So funky and spot on . He is is one of the great rock and roll ( Blues style ) bass players ever . I reckon he could fit in with any of the great rock bands .

As a truck driver myself I downloaded the album straight away and will be playing it on the long lonely highway next week. Thank god for random songs from random tv shows
Yes indeed. These days, I go to pubs, and the live music is one half thud-thud-thud from a really large drum kit, and the other half of it is vocals, if you're lucky a lead guitar, and a backing track with the rest of the instruments on it. :-( I'd rather than drum kit be on a backing track, turned down, and the guitars, bass and keyboards live. Oh, and Barnesy isn't a screamer compared to a lot of what's out there, that IS just screaming without really much at all in the way of melody being sung in between. Angry fast-spoken bad beat poetry to me does not a song make, either. You know a band or artist isn't fully there musically when they have to depend on gimmicks like backup dancers picking them up and carrying them around stage to create a show.
I saw Cold Chisel in the Darwin amphitheatre last December, it was still 30 degrees when they came on stage at 9pm. I'd definitely go and see them again but nothing will ever beat the pure Aussie experience of listening to songs like Bow River and Khe Sahn in the Darwin heat. It was such a great night!

This version is so much better than the studio version. The harmonica adds so much more to the song, and it's a faster tempo than the studio version which is the cherry on top
There's a reason the studio version didn't do too well as a single, but the live version did. The studio version is decent enough, but the live version has so much more dynamism and energy to it, whereas the studio version feels like they're holding back.
"Swing Shift" is still one of the greatest concerts and live recordings of all time, a rocking rolling experience I have spent a great deal of life enjoying, Thanks CC.

Funny thing about Aussie rock bands - it's the little things, like a guy with a harmonica, or a guy with a flute in Men at Work's Land Down Under. In an American rock band, they'd do all that with on the lead guitar.

I never get bored reliving my teenage years, listing to this amazing bad. Thanks for the memories!
One of the best songs OF ALL TIME.
That was the best song ever! I'll certainly be listening to that again
The time when aussies were aussies, ruff and ready anytime.
"I been working hard, twelve hours a day
And the money I saved won't buy my youth again"
Actually so true.
What a voice 🌤🥵🍁💕💕💕
My 15 year old son is onto them now, he’s absolutely obsessed with them and solo Barnsey. It warms my heart.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face
Mossy always was the best thing about Cold Chisel.
when music was music. RIP rock'n'roll.
Hi. How are you doing. Hope you are fine and enjoying your day today.
I'll tell you what, when Jimmy and Ian harmonize it's magic (Saturday nights another one)
100% agree, Barnsey might be the front man but it wouldn’t be cold chisel with out Mossy.and yes Saturday night is a masterpiece, I love the way Mossy’s vocals are some how able to calm amazing rawness in Barnsey
I just thank my lucky stars I got to experience Cold Chisel live so many times in their hey day from the start all the way to the Last Stand.....bloody brilliant
The money I save won’t buy my youth again...live by that and hasn’t done me wrong yet 😂
Still goes gard iver 40 years later. I did a half decent impromptu version of this at work on friday night and my mate gave me the hest compliment, he said it felt like he was at the pub!
Been listening to cold chisel since the 70s..its now 22/08/2020..timeless
makes me think of my days running across the n/w miss it so much!
Ian Moss plays a HOT guitar!!! DAYUM!
Just Ian Moss
and a better singer than Barnes
Used to fly over property in the kimberlies to work . Where mossy wrote tis songs. Was bo river station. His brother or something worked there. He liked it. Visiting.
I'm there after the intro :)
I love this soooooo much - Go us Aussies
Barnes / Moss. The rough and the smooth. THAT'S why Chisel was so very exceptionally good.
