Wait if Aang was able to master air in 12 yrs but become a low level master in water and proficient user of earth and a gifted and strong fire bender in less than a year does that make him the strongest avatar ever because he was able to have relative mastery and control over all the elements within a yr without any help from the white lotus?? I mean Korra (let it be said I dislike LOK a lot but I digress) she had all the white lotus members, the greatest masters of their respective elements, to help her. And every other avatar had yrs of training to become masters of each element. But by Aangs rate of mastery it should only take him another half year to master earth and fire plus elevate his water mastery to its max.

Nobody is putting down Aang, this is just clearing things for those who exaggerate Aang's abilities. The boy was gifted to say the least and he learned from even more gifted masters of their respective elements. With how Toph taught him to see the world through earthbending alone puts him in elite class of earthbenders in terms of what he can do.
However elements arent that easy thing to master and while Aang got good understanding and practice with all of them, he didnt Last Jedi-ed through them. Which is a good thing. He keeps on learning and growing after the war was over and that makes him even better as a character and an avatar.

    • @rowanmiller7062
      @rowanmiller7062 4 года назад +37

Yeah, it’s not dissing Aang to say that he didn’t master 3 elements in a few months. Nobody could’ve. I’d say Aang did a remarkable job, though. He was an extremely powerful waterbender, and obviously absurdly good at airbending. On top of that, he was great, albeit not ridiculous, at Earth and Fire, despite having a natural aversion to the former and hardly any time for the latter. He was likely the most powerful Avatar that we’ve seen, when comparing him as a twelve-year-old to Roku and Korra.

Rowan Miller True, in terms of combative bending, he’s probably one of the most skilled Avaters. Aang honed & sharpened skills by battling the most skilled benders & fighters of his age. He fought Azula, Combustion Man, the Dai Li, Mei, Ty Li, & many other skilled deadly opponents which propelled him to proficiency very quickly.

Yeah the only element he really mastered was Air. He still had work to do with the other 2, especially fire(he has seismic sense which is very useful). And even though he was a great water bender I wouldn't say he was a master. Because he wasn't on par with other master water benders. I would say he would be right below S tier if it was water.

While Aang struggled with Earth bending, who but an Earth bending master could use that fighting style so efficiently during a battle with the overpowered Fire Lord during Sozin’s Comet? I’d say he absolutely mastered water and earth. He wasn’t a prodigy like Katara and Toph in those elements but he certainly mastered them.

I think the point of the entire ATLA series is to drive home the fact that physical mastery or power should NOT be considered the ultimate triumph of a bender. There are things far more important in life- humility, selflessness, ahimsa. That is why the Avatar is able to bring balance to the world- not because he is the strongest bender, but because he embodies Spirituality.

If there was another Element (besides Air) that Aang would have mastered, it would be Water, but only because it came easily enough to him. Earth and Fire were challenging for different reasons; Earth was opposite to the Air Nomad philosophy of avoiding conflict, while Fire was due to a personal issue.

I am a big homer of the OG series too guys but I do have to give credit where credit is due with Korra. This comment is a very surface level look at what I consider each of their skills with the elements but another commenter put it best...it isn't about who is strongest but about the philosophy and who that bender is as a person and this comment here does not reflect that. I know this edit is 4 years late but wanted to clarify *edit message*

I would also like to point out that to me Korra never fully mastered the philosophy behind each element as Aang never fully did either. However he did have a better overall knowledge of the philosophy behind the elements. This excludes Water for Korra and Air for Aang.

    • @thatmetalhead9000

Naruto Uzumaki - Energy bending can be counted for both, even for Jinora. However, I dont consider it to be one of the four elements or something one can train to be a "master" in. Since it is based off of your personal spiritual energy.
Having an understanding of a philosophy is different than actually fully embracing or even knowing. I know the basics of certain philosophers but I cannot claim to be an expert. This can be seen with Aang and his Earth bending or with Korra and air.

    • @ingenjannik
      @ingenjannik 7 лет назад +153

+thatmetalhead9000 I agree and disagree with your assesment. Like you point out, Korra never truly mastered the philosophy behind her bending (except for fire) thus making her not a true master in the other elements. Her fighting style was to randomly throw out one element after the other,, hoping to overwhelm the opponent without utilizing the individual strength of the elements.
Korra was a firebender at heart, she didn't know how to properly counter with water, defend with earth or evade with air.
In terms of sheer bending power, Aang was inferior but used the abilities to their fullest potential (except for firebending, even at the end of the series he was too traumatized to fully utilize the offense of firebending).
All in all, i claim that out of these two Aang was the better bender with 3 elements but simply lacked the same degree of bending prowes for unexplained reasons.

My only problem with this is the implycation that Korra is a better earthbender than Aang. He said did Aang master all the elements before the end of the series and did he even need to? That is two questions in one so considering the outcome from mastering the avatar state I’d say he mastered the elements by the end of the series due to his connection to all the past masters skills but once he comes out of the avatar state he is back to not being a master on his own. By comparison Korra never mastered the avatar state so Aang was ahead of her in combat skills from this one fact alone. I know she has nothing to do with either question I’m just using her as a bench mark here.

@@molson9059 Korra mastered the Avatar State in LOK, Aang doesn't in ATLA. Korra had control of herself in Avatar State AND she can activate it at WILL which is already the proof that she had mastered it. Aang however cannot activate Avatar State at will and he doesn't have full control of himself while in Avatar state. This is understandable since Korra had 12 years to master avatar state along with the 3 elements while Aang only had 6 months to learn the 3 elements and don't have time to master Avatar state.

Aang's greatest strength and ally was the Force( the Avatar state). I think he learned to master that more than any of the other elements by the time he became a mature adult. This would only make sense seeing that he was an air monk, which are very spiritual people already. And once one has mastered the Avatar state it matters very little( if at all) if one has a manual, individual mastery of any of the elements. The Avatar state takes each and every one of the elements and boosts their natural effectiveness, while also being able to nullify all of them. This is proven when adult Aang was in the clutches of Yakone's powerful bloodbending( Yakone's being perhaps the most powerful bloodbender at that time) about to be killed, and he then suddenly bursts free of it through the might of the Avatar state alone. I doubt any other method could have worked to free him of the blood bending short of the Avatar state. That alone should be testament to the Avatar state's power. And then other examples we have are his fight with Ozai when he utterly overpowered him, his merging with the Ocean Spirit, his decimation of the Earth kingdom general and his troops, the creation of the iceberg he was frozen in and also the huge water spout. There are other things we could site too, but that be too long a list. I am a great fan of the thought of mastery of each element through one's own efforts of hard-work and determination over time, but realistically no amount of training or practice could really come close enough to equaling the power of any element infused with Avatar state energy. Avatar state level bending is literally on a mega/perhaps global scale at its full extent.

I read this now more as expository information about who the avatar is, not as a prerequisite for saving the world. But I do think the language is intended to set us up for the expectation that Aang needs to master the 4 elements. I agree with the other commenters that what was more important than physical mastery of the elements were the friendships and alliances team avatar built. Could they have stopped the fire nation without the order of the white lotus, earth kingdom, or northern water tribe? Could peace have lasted without Zuko on the throne? I doubt it. I totally understand why they wrote in the idea of Korra losing her connection to her past lives from a story perspective. She had to be able to rise up again from the bottom and find her strength within. Otherwise, every time she had a problem we'd all be wondering why she can't simply ask Aang, Roku or any other past life for their expertise. That said, it still always bothered me that we never saw her get it back in the show. I haven't read the comics yet but I also really hope they dedicate a story to her regaining that connection.

i like to think that Korra is the first and last avatar. when Rava was destroyed the connection to the past avatars went with them when Rava was reformed from the core of vato, it started a new line. that is how i see it atleast. so when Korra passes on, there will only be one avatar for the next to learn from and so on down the line. i think the parrals to the first avatar in season 2 were important for us to understand her role as the avatar and what her position is now since the cycle was reset.

@@AntoineBandele you say in the video that Aang opent his last 'chacra' (I don't know how to spel that word) in the fight against Ozai. But I don't think that happend and I also don't think it was stone-out-of-nowhere-Avatar-ex-machina He didn't unlock his last 'chacra' at the fight with Ozai, he already opend the last 'chacra' at the end op season 2. But before he could do annything with the avatar state Azula struck him with lightning. Katara say while healing him that there is a lot of energy stuck there or something like that. That is what was holding him back from going in the avatar state. Him getting hit by that rock set this energy free in his body so he could use the avatar state again. This is what I think not stone out of nowhere. It may be ex-machina but it is nothing like the ending of season 2 ex-machina. That was stone out of nowhere. And while I'm already putting al my thoughts out here I also want to say that the giant lion turtel was not a bad thing fore the ending because it did not change the fight. It only changed the outcome of the question if Aang should he ready to kill. And the answer was no. The lesson told was that if you fight hard enough good will come out on top and you never have to kill. This is not the true world but it is the answer we want to give joung kids fore there daily life. It also rounds of the theme of never giving up hope witch the show had a lot of. 1. Air (My answer: Yes)
Yes, he literally got the tattoos.
    2. Water (My answer: No)
Doubtful, he trained with Katara and a Northern master, and was proficient, but I don't think he "mastered" it. I don't think that he even learned to heal, which is supposed to be a relatively simple water bending technique.
    3. Earth (My answer: Yes)
Debatable, he trained with Toph, who was almost unequivocally the greatest earth bender to ever live, and from her became an impressive earth bender and even learned seismic sense. To my knowledge he never learned metal bending, an advanced technique, but one that his teacher, Toph had invented.
    4. Fire (My answer: Yes)
Debatable, he trained under Zuko, with advice from other fire sages. He never mastered lightning bending, but he did manage to redirect a bolt from Fire Lord Ozai under Sozin's comet. He never properly understood the popular fire bending, but the more spiritual kind taught under the original fire benders(dragons) was something he excelled at.
Edit: While I respect your opinion on Earth, Fire is a different story. Aang was an insecure 12ish year old at that time, and he would've been hard on himself, and Ozai has logically been training since a very young age, and this shouldn't be a "beat him and you win" type of thing. Ozai's fire bending was also augmented by the comet, and even if their bending was normal, you wouldn't say someone isn't a master of earth bending if they couldn't beat Toph in a fight. That shouldn't be a reason to dismiss him.

I think Aang did master waterbending. Katara remarked that he had the reflexes of a waterbending master. (I wanna say book 2 episode 9?) Waterbending: the element of change is all about taking the enemies attack/energy and redirecting it back at them. This requires quick reflexes. He out of all the elements he's shown learning, it also came the easiest to him. Redirecting lightning is also a reflection of his mastery of waterbending principles. My own thoughts.

Aang did not master Fire Bending in any way shape or form, heck I'm not even convinced that he could beat Zhao with only his fire bending.
as for healing, not everyone is capable of doing it, and its made clear in the Kyoshi novels and the fact that Katara has to go to classes that true healing is not only difficult but can be lethal if not preformed properly.

I always kind of think the Avatar (at least from what we've seen so far) is strongest with his initial Element (Example Roku was best with Fire, Aang was best with Air, Korra was best with Water). This isn't to say their talent with the other elements couldn't rival that though. (particularly in the case of Korra her Earthbending and Firebending were arguably equivalent to her Waterbending and Roku seemed to be fairly masterful with the other Elements as well)
As to this video, I agree with the verdict. I think Aang was best with Water and Air because those focus more on evasion and redirection (typically) and they were more suited to Aang's personality. I would consider Aang a Master of both Water and Air. I'd consider him Exceptionally proficient with Earth but not masterful.I think that's why in his fight with Ozai using Earth was fairly ineffective, I wouldn't count that as an examples of a bad showing for Aang so much a good showing for Ozai. Fire I think was his weakest due to his previous reluctance to use it, lack of experience, and the fact that the usually aggressive and rapid nature of fire clashed with his personal fighting style. I do feel it's a bit unfair to use his showing with Ozai as an example simply because Ozai had more experience with the element and had the same amp as him buut I'm not disagreeing that his combat proficiency and use of Fire in that fight was fairly lacking.

At best I think he spent a couple weeks at the North Pole and then Katara continued teaching him on the road (which isn’t very practical) and Toph also only taught him on the road and she joined their group in the beginning of spring. Then he had like a couple of weeks or just over a month at best with Zuko (who isn’t the best fire bender out there tbh) to master fire while having to prepare to fight Ozhai. It’s kind of a miracle he pulled it off at all and I think that shows that he is one of greats. Imagine the level he could have gotten to if he was given 12 years like Roku.

The real-life criteria for being a recognized Master of a Martial Art is having thorough knowledge and proficiency of that Martial Art's techniques. In the case of Airbending, its canon that being recognized as a master requires the invention of a new technique, in Aang's case, the Air Scooter. It doesn't take a leap of logic to infer that creating something new in a pre-existing system requires a robust understanding of said system.
So the question to ask is "Did Aang demonstrate thorough knowledge and proficiency in his non-native elements?" The answer to which, with the minor caveat of Waterbending, is No. His Airbending, as one would expect, and as stated, is top notch. His work with the other elements through the course of the series is much more rudimentary.
Don't get me wrong, he's good with the other elements, but calling him a Master Fire/Water/Earthbender is stretching it at best, and being disingenuous at worst.

    • @houseofaction
      @houseofaction 5 лет назад

yea thats actually bullshit. 1 in order to master airbending you have to complete all 36 forms. Aang didn't do so instead they gave him the title of master after he created the air scooter but thats not a requirement. in real life martial arts the title of master is really just an oxymoron no one can truly be a master because its about continued growth.

House of faction that was perfect exactly that he was a master avatar because he mastered himself

Considering how skilled Aang was in each element, he almost undoubtedly had then all completely mastered by the time he died. It is arguable that LoK doesn’t portray that well enough but from we can see, as an adult Aang was at least slightly better at several things: the air scooter (which he invented), resisting bloodbending, trapping people with earthbending, taking down moving targets with swipes of air, energybending, and especially controlling the Avatar State. He did all of these without any major difficulty against Yakone, who was probably not enough of a challenge to push Aang to his full abilities (either that or he was “nerfed” by the LoK writers).
Now there are some things that we don’t know if Aang ever was able to do-some of them perhaps aren’t learnable and are simply up to genetics: metalbending, healing, lightning generation, bloodbending, and lavabending. The only thing that he almost certainly would have never been able to do is combustionbend, along with specific things that didn’t exist until LoK (i.e. fly without a glider or firebending, since Zaheer was the first person to do so) or things to do with plot (i.e. bending in the Spirit World due to Raava semantics). All of the other “subsets” of bending have evidence of potential and reasons for lack thereof but they are all highly plausible. I personally would love to think Aang just completely learned everything possible.
So, the sum things up, here are all the intricacies/special abilities of bending for Aang in each category and type-I would say he did in fact master every element in terms of how they are conventionally used-i.e. abilities that any bender would be able to learn for each element:
    *CONFIRMED TO HAVE LEARNED*
*Air:* Air scooter (entirely mastered, including the ability to stand on it and maintain it for an indefinite amount of time), gliding (flying without propulsion, rather manipulating lift in his flowy outfit or wings of a glider), air sphere in Avatar State, levitating while in the Avatar State
*Water:* Just bending massive volumes of water
*Earth:* Seismic sense (including blindfolded earthbending) and mid-air bending in the Avatar State (in his battle against Ozai we saw that he could send rocks flying at high speeds in rapid succession, while requiring no physical connection with the ground to earthbend)
*Fire:* Lightning redirection, fire-breathing/roaring even outside of the Avatar State, creating fire as hot as lava in the Avatar State (we saw that he could melt solid stone)
*Other:* Energybending, agility without bending, chi sensing, being a spirit medium, being able to contact past lives as well as various other Avatar Spirit abilities, even outside of the Avatar State, and completely resisting bloodbending in the Avatar State, as well as being a very talented dancer-also, gymnastics without airbending and degrees of musical and artistic talent
    *QUITE VERY PLAUSIBLE-LIKELY:*
*Air:* Air sphere outside of Avatar State
*Water:* Healing, bloodbending, completely resisting bloodbending outside of the Avatar State
    *Earth:* Metalbending, lavabending
*Fire:* Propelling himself with fire, making fire daggers, generating lightning, bending different-colored fire, creating fire up to 3000 degrees outside of Avatar State
*Other:* Offensive hand-to-hand combat, spiritual projection, bending in the Spirit World
    *SLIGHTLY UNLIKELY-SURELY NOT LEARNED:*
*Air:* Flight/weightlessness outside of Avatar State
    *Water:* Spiritbending
*Earth:* Nothing I can think of
    *Fire:* Combustionbending
*Other:* Astral projection, connecting with Avatar Wan and/or Raava
    I’ll continue this later.

I agree with you that Aang did not master all four elements by the end of the series. I do believe however he did mastered the Avatar State which means he was close. I also believe Aang deserves the title of the best or most skilled avatar. Now I have nothing against Korra or any of the other avatars for that matter they had years and years to master the elements were as Aang only had one and while he did have his friends to teach him and they had mastered their elements, they were still kids. Every other avatar had fully grown masters who had been teaching for years. So for the one year Aang had, I think he did amazing in nearly mastering all the elements. Lastly to master the avatar state you must master all four elements, which means he must have been on the brink of mastering them all. So I agree with you Aang had some work to go, but I have to cut him just a little more slack.

I agree that Aang did not have full mastery with Earth(Toph blatently said), but your examples were pretty weak. Azula damn near unbeatable on a 1v1 and Ozai had sozen's comet on his side.

Katara in that same fight handled Azula very well. At the western air temple in Book 3, Zuko was her equal.

Antoine Bandele Zuko got trained by the dragons and the best firebender if not second to his brother Ozai, Zuko was an amazing bender easily second or 3rd most powerful bender in team avatar

Earthbending Aang is very underrated. He managed to have multiple rock formations protect him from SOZIN COMET FIRELORD OZAI attaks. One even lasted mutliple blasts. These are quite possibly the most powerful fire attaks out there. And while yes Toph said his skill could use work, she is the most powerful earthbender, so her standards might be a bit higher.

Why did aang still like katara since he unlocked his last chakra? the monk said that he had to let go of what he loved in order to unlock it. Also wouldnt that mean he would be able to fly? since in korra you could fly if you let go of your earthly boundings which aang did by unlocking all the chakras right?

From someone who study physics, I can tell you that you need to learn and master periodic table as much someone who studies chemistry, (nearly all modern physics are based on atomic scale)

Whether or not he mastered all of the elements aside from air by the end of the series, he also had a very short amount of time to learn/master in order to defeat the fire lord. I'd say it was impressive of how much he did learn and accomplish. In short, I'll say he hit the level that would be right before master at least.
