  • This is a review of Tool Holders from Banggood (an Asian trading site like Amazon, AliExpress, etc,) using current types of carbide inserts, DCMT, CCMT,CCGX, 16 ER A60, 11 IR A60, MGMN200. This is a set of 7 12 x 12 millimetres holders, 3 for external turning, 1 for parting, 1 for internal threading, 1 for external threading and one for internal boring. The set comes with 1 insert for each bar. The good news is that the replacement inserts are Really affordable as prices starts at about $5 per box of ten up to something like $16 for the bigger ones…
    The testing was performed at my Friend’s workshop since he owns a mini-lathe capable of showing what can be achieved in real work conditions on smaller lathes. People with just about any Mini-lathe or up to an Atlas or South-Bend or similar machines will benefit from this complete set of tooling.
    The availability of low price carbide inserts makes possible to people that may have problem with sharpening High Speed Tooling, the inserts solution provides a simple way to get up and running very fast without the worry of grinding usual HSS tools.
    After performing the test, my impression of this set is very positive, the price versus quality is rather an unexpected positive surprise, we were able to achieve a good level of performance and quality work on different materials like Aluminium, Cold Rolled Steel, Hot Rolled Steel, and, even some very tough Allow containing some Tungsten as an alloying element.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Make sure you check for the latest promotions, Banggood will have all sorts of great extra discounts at different occacions along the year...

      @@pierresgarage2687 Yes I bought the Craftex cx-709 from Busy Bee. I'm just an amateur lol. I'm buying a lot of carbide cutters and holders from Aliexpress, so far so good.

    Pierre,
    I bought this set following one of your previous reviews. I've used hss for years and wanted a better selection of carbide options for my 13x40 lathe. While I haven't used them all, the external threading tool works great, and the DCMT & CCMT tools/inserts are EXCELLENT! My only complaint is with one of the DCMT tool holders (straight), which doesn't hold the insert tight enough. With the CCMT inserts, taking a 0.050" cut on the radius (0.100" dia) is no problem, and the chip breaks well, even in 17-4PH stainless. I would highly recommend this set.

      Hi Robert, Nice feedback about those tools, though,I think the previous review on those were probably from Chrisfrom Chrisb252, but, agreed that those little CCMTs are great sets of toolong at an irresistible price... About the DCMTs, I havent used them much yet, but I'll have a closer look at what you mention...
      Thanks for taking time to write the comment, Pierre

    I purchased this same set based on a former review. I think that it was Chris at OMS. My only complaint is the the screws were a little soft and it pulled the threads off of a couple of the screws. I purchased some better quality hold down screws and it solved that problem. Thanks for the review.

    WOW! The tested product seems good, but I am really impressed with the lathe. Inserts can be usefull on a lathe like this, probably because the speed can be turned up quite a bit, aside from being preformed/ground.

      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад

      Hi, that little lathe is a nicely made tool, for it's size it performs really good, as carbide feels better when running at higher speeds, mostly on small diameter parts, then, the combination is near ideal...

      Hi Chris,The holders seem the same, the ones you tested were sold with Aluminum inserts, but could be easyly changed for steel type inserts, there are a few nose radiuses available, some of the last numbers in the descriptive are the radius size. Someone will have to look around to get the proper radiusses if really needed.
      Now the set is selling arouns 35 CDN$....
      This is something nobody can live with out... lol

      Yes, you are right. I really need to get me some more inserts when I can. However, what I had when pushed a bit could manage with steel to do some adequate work. For my sins I am often a bit non-fussy over the inserts I use :)

    this stuff they also use in their own factories, they have an interest to make them decent and a fair price,(such is the way chinese prefer to be self sufficient as possible) many industrial use and common parts and tools are the same, they have become solid and decent performers, (or chinese machining would not get done) to the extend many well known western names would put their name on it and treble the price

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад +1

      Yap...!!! We're asking them to produce quality products at a rock bottom price, they got to use their creativity to the best to get the job done, the problem is when the tooling companies over here gets the goods cheap and multiply the price by 20 times... something is kinda unfair somewhere, and this is why direct export from China is so popular...

      this is all right if you move the compound that would be set at an angle but not if you're using the cross slide, then, the angle don't count.... If it's what you're suggesting.

    Nice video Pierre, I have had good luck with those inserts, and they are cheap enough to buy a lifetime supply ( for a hobbyist) in one order.
    Where did the lathe come from? I think the shortcoming is the ball bearings they use rather than taper rollers, but great bang for the buck, cheers mon ami!

    The website says 45HRC, seems that several of them were down in the 20s from your testing.:(

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      I've tested only on the middle of the shank, if I get a spare moment I'll try to make tests in more spots... Although, the RC results aren't critical with those much smaller inserts, since there is no mini or micro lathe strong enough to twist those...
      The inner boring bars were well within the best standards and those are the most important ones to get right...

    • @TraditionalToolworks
      @TraditionalToolworks 7 лет назад

      Sure, but if a vendor advertises their product as being XX HRC and they show up much less, it's deceiving at best. Herein lies the problem with imports, the quality is not consistent and the hardness test you did shows that. For people looking for the absolute cheapest tools they can find, hardness is probably not as important.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Depends on the application also, I would be much more critical with some holders destined to big machines and heavy cutting... Then, the parameters are prime concern...

  • @howardtoob
    @howardtoob 6 лет назад

    I know this is asking a lot to answer but will these be suitable for a 10" Sheldon lathe? Certainly that is NOT a mini lathe but I'd like to get some carbide tooling for it. As a hobby hack I can't justify spending a ton on tool holders and inserts. Also can anyone tell me if a negative rake might be OK to use as well?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  6 лет назад +1

      I'm sure you could use those tools, at least for a start, how powerful is your lathe ( ??? HP ) The trick is to adjust the removal to the weakest link in the chain, those tools can still get a decent bite in steel with the proper power to drive it, CCMT inserts can be loaded near half their cutting side, keep your tool holders close from the toolpost holder use minimum extension to minimize flex...
      Great news as the inserts for those cost real low price and do a real decent job... ;)

  • @RobB_VK6ES
    @RobB_VK6ES 7 лет назад

    I really don't know why North American turners like the compound permanently offset 29 - 30 degrees. It is not like you are screw cutting every single job. In any case for finer pitched threads say < 1.5mm pitch plunge feeding is not really a problem. By turning the compound back to 0 degrees and you will notice an improvement in machine stability by reducing effective tool overhang and all radial cutting forces are opposed by the cross feed screw only. On light machines like the lathe shown here it is not uncommon for the compound to creep when offset at an angle which will change your set cut. A further benefit is you have an auxiliary axis parallel to Z with and accurately graduated collar making facing to a length easier.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 лет назад

      Here the coumpound is mainly used for chamfers or angle cuts, 99.9% of the time I thread entering straight in at 90 degrees, so much faster and easier to manage, normally a threat doesn't nee much more than 3 to 6 passes total at the fastes possible RPMs...

    Here is a page with some good inspiration on what cutting angles to use. NTK Swiss inserts are interesting to learn about. They are designed with smaller DOC in mind, might be optimal for the minilathe although probably not affordable. If you can grind your own instead, I would try using them as a starting point.
