  • Reviewing and testing this 16 x 16mm seven pieces tool holder for medium sized lathe equiped with BXA ( Someone tells me that also an AXA holder will do, just check before ordering...!!! ) or similar type tool holders, This is a complete set for turning inside and outside, threading, parting, finishing...
    The quality of this set is real good, this is a set I would purchase for myself and use on a regular basis. After testing on a lathe with the appropriate size and capacity, the set reveals to be doing an excellent job as is with the supplied inserts. I'll test the hardness of the shanks, and even supply some high resolution microscopic enlargments of the inserts before and after use.
    I've tested in the past some smaller sets for mini or smaller lathes, this is the first decent that comes to my attention that is worth mentionning, at around $50 USD, for the seven shanks, the inserts, wrenches and keys, it's a real good value for the money.
    This set is directed mainly to small shop users, serious hobbyist, amateurs, basement machinists, or anyone that is on a tight budget when it comes time to buy tools for the shop.
    The set was given to me for eveluation purpose by Banggood. Banggood is an Asian Trading plateform similar to AliExpress, Amazon, etc...

    I bought a kit for my south bend 13'' from Accusize and I'm pleasantly surprised how well it works even though my machine cant always hit the required FPM/rpm for carbide inserts!
    Nice video!

      There are some great inserts for general purpose work, not optimized for high rate production on special alloys, but, perfectly suitables for hobbyist and small shops.
      Unless you use those on CNC machines with tightly optimized parameters, you'll rarely use them within their best portion of the efficiency curve, don't worry about it though... 👍🙂
      Enjoy your time in the shop...
      Cheers,
      Pierre

    Thanks for putting real tests to the stuff that you review, with real world conditions. Granted, Phil's lathe is a skookum piece of equipment and can do DOC and feeds that a lot of ours can't do, but it shows that the inserts can take a serious cut. Good to see (and hear) the two of you at it again!

      It's always better when ever possible to test the tooling in the conditions closest to what it's designed to be used for, I was surprised with the quality of the set, this makes a tool with a great quality/price ratio, it's nie to get the flashy brand names on a tool, but if you have a choice between putting food on the table or lower priced tooling, the choice is obvious, I'm not that worried about the flashy company, their cost is even lower than we're paying those economy tools... ( They also got more food on their table than they can ever eat... )
      Was heard a few times, Robert was also present...!!! Rare occurence on a week day...!!!
      Ever tried to push your lathe to see about where was the limit...??? ( just get there progressively and you'll feel the slowing down. That will you plenty of time to disengage... )

    Pierre,
    I, for one, appreciate the reviews, especially the Rockwell testing feature. I was surprised these tools tested so well for hardness. I have a few Banggood cutting tools that have performed well. I do need to get a decent threading tool and proper inserts. May just get this set. Can’t beat the price.
    I also appreciate the fact you are up front about how you acquire the items you review. Some are supplied, some you purchase outright. Some who do these reviews never mention it.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      It's important to make reviews as objectively as possible, I'm quite picky on what I'll accept for review, even if it's free, it's got to be a product that looks like a good item.
      Reviewing those take quite some time, and, not wanting to take precious moments with lousy products, a good pre-selection has to be made, I'm not gonna accept or purchace something that don't looks like something worthy in the first place.

    Pierre,
    This is a bit off topic but have you ever tried free hand turning metal with a hand held cutting tool on a tool rest like in turning wood? I saw a video Dale Derry did where it was demonstrated.
    I actually tried it today and was surprised how easy it was. I needed to make a handle for a saddle wheel and want to match the other handles on my lathe so I thought I thought I would give it a try. It’s a slow process and the tool has to be held at just the right position but I actually got curled chips. Of course I was cutting 12L14 so it was easily machined. I imagine aluminum or brass might be easier.
    It’s not something I would want to do regularly as it’s way too slow but thought it interesting. Just wondered if you’ve had any experience with it.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Dale, not tried for big areas, just small corners for a quick shaping, to do so I get a solid carbide boring bar in the toolpost and use it as a rest, quick and easy. Got to be careful with softer materials they possibly catch easier... Safer with a longest possible shank or handle, though...
      Your idea of taking it easy is to me the best idea to stay alive and healthy... ;)
      Cheers, Pierre

    • @dalegriggs5392
      @dalegriggs5392 5 лет назад

      Pierre,
      I agree it’s best to remove as much material as possible with tool post held cutters. Any hand held tool absolutely requires an adequately firm handle incorporated into it. The tool I used yesterday was HSS and ground with a large frontal radius.
      I understand the softer materials are subject to grabbing the tool. This is true in woodworking as well which I have done much more of. Hardwoods were much easier to turn than the softwoods and a much better finish is achievable. T
      Free hand metal turning isn’t something I plan to do a lot of and wouldn’t recommend it as a viable option in the norm but it does work in a pinch as with the unusual shape of my lathe handle. As one who has much more machining skill and experience than I do I just wanted your take on it. It’s all too easy to end up with a tool in the face or elsewhere if proper caution isn’t applied.

    Nice video,
    But I'm struggling with the forest of inserts and when to use these inserts. All of them can be used for turning or boring or facing or grooving. For example: turning with ... 90° or 85° or 75° ... aproching angle.
    And then the positief, neutral or negatief angle.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, I get your point, inserts are quite numerous, lots of configurations and shapes, can't promise, but it would be interesting to give a basic understanding of how to sort things out in the most commonly used shape of inserts...
      Those tutorials are quite demanding and need some thinking ahead, I'll put that on the "To do" videos long list...
      Also depends a lot with what size of a lathe you're using, material you're turning, etc...
      Just as an example: In this video, used a steel insert to cut Aluminium, wasn't ideal, a better insert for Al is an insert with a sharped edge and more agressive angle of attack, you need to look for an insert they say is for Al, then take a closer look at the cutting edges...
      Manufactueres will often give some good descriptions of the intented use for their product.

      @@pierresgarage2687 That is just my Point, I'm new at this. But I use these same 250-201 toolholder 16x16mm insertholder.
      Most of al is hot rolled steel.
      I have trouble to find steel that can be harden. Here in Belgium you need to be a manufacturer to get the good stuff. And it is very expensive to get small amounts

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      Here also, small amounts are very costly. Depending on the alloy, hardenable steel is basicly from 3 to 8 times or more expensive than regular hot rolled steel, one possible source would be some local a machine shop that has some surplus or would be willing to order some for you. Just be carefull with your machining parameters not to harden your material as you machine it, then, it will be hell to get rid of that hardened surface.
      There is a lot of work you can do using HSS tools, mostly with AL you'll get great finish as a bonus, also it will give you good feel for how materials behaves at very low cost, then, you introduce the use of inserts as you gain experience, this will save you quite some breakage... As for HSS, try finding HSS with Cobalt content, it's much more durable. A good source for HSS would be local adds from people getting rid of lots of tools in old tool boxes.

  • @jagboy69

    I can tell you first hand the 16x16 WILL NOT fit into the 250-101 tool holder. I picked up a cheapy AXA holder and just going to open her up to hold these cheap tools. If it's like the rest of the chinese stuff, it's made out of ramen noodles and harden cat poop. I'm not tossing out my aloris AXA tool post at this point. Great video.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  4 года назад

      Chinese products are as good as what we order, they manufacture just about everything you use, if you order the good stuff it's good, but, if you get the lousy stuff, then you get lower quality tools, as far as I had the chance to experiment, those tools are quite decent for less critical manufacturing or serious hobby use.
