  • A quick evaluation of the Banggood set of seven tool holders with inserts - for well under $50 ($44.99), excellent value. These are on a 1/2" shank and overall perform very well, although some inserts might benefit from a slight tip radius increase to improve finish.

    Nice set and I think I'll order one! I'll caution you that those turning inserts are polished with a high rake and intended mostly for alyoomineeeum and plastic. The edges are pretty sharp and fragile so they will die quickly in steel. OK for a skim cut but can't dissipate heat so I'd advise keeping under 5 thou in steel. You can get CCMT and DCMT inserts in that size for steel and they will have the larger tip radius you want. The parting and threading inserts are more general purpose so you're good there. The boring bars are angled down to get the point of the insert on centerline and provide clearance - same with the treading bar. All insert boring bars I have are like that. The turning holders have 0 (zero) rake and you'll want to stick with single sided inserts for them (CCMT as opposed to CNMT). Polished as they are the small size doesn't move heat well even with aluminum and you will get fusion welds on the tip so flood them for high speed or go slow with a lube brush. Just some stuff I learned the hard way, Chris.
    Take care.

      Hi Eddie,
      Point taken re insert's purpose - and will probably only use small cuts on steel. As you say, probably best kept for Al etc. Many thanks for the useful info - I have a few tools that serve well for hogging so will keep these for finer work... plus perhaps employ the spray mist.

    Good little Video Chris. I'll have to check and see if they have 5/8 or 3/4 holders. That's what I use on my LeBlond. It's a CXA tool post. Take it easy till you get better

      Hi Gary - thanks. Not sure if larger sizes are available - haven't looked but certainly for AXA folks like me they come out pretty good.

      Yea, I checked. They don't have a kit but I can get the 2 main ones I want in 16mm, which is almost 5/8. So that's what I'm going to order. Thanks for the tip.

      Hi John,
      Hopefully cost would not be too bad for your region even so.
      The combo of low back and the damn hip are unlikely to really improve - just a case of trying to muddle along and still not give up :-) Sympathies with you having had to deal with RA - that's no fun at all.

    Hi Chris,
    This set is a great value, those inserts are more meant for aluminum, and will still operate in steel as long as you keep it for lighter removal, and since it's easy to get some inserts more adapted for steel at about $10 for a box of 10, then, you purchase what you need to get satisfaction on the type of work you usually do.<
    Remember that carbide needs speed in order to perform at it's best like 400 to 600 fps. and under 1" you're gonna find much harder to get super great finishes.
    I've used some of those inexpensive inserts for AL and the ones for steel and I'm pretty happy with the results myself even now I'm not doing any more professional or production work.
    This was a great demo useful to small shop owners.
    Cheers, Pierre

      @ChrisB257  7 лет назад

      Hi Pierre,
      Thanks - had wondered about those re Al usage - I never take super heavy cuts anyways so reckon these will be a useful addition even on steel.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 7 лет назад

      Remember that carbide tooling will generally give much better finish with heavier cuts, when trying to sneak in with cuts of only a few thou, you'll ruin your great finish from the previous heavier cut... :(

    I was most impressed with the narrow parting tool, with such shiny swarf coming off that is a very good cutter, especially as the steel you are cutting is not lead bearing, the screwcutting tips, well, I think one good thing about these is that when the tip breaks,(as it always seems to), you can index in another edge and keep going where you left off, without having to re position the cutter, I find these need a very generous run out groove to even hope not to chip the cutter, your excellent hand cranking system is the way to go! Chris B.

    Hello Chris, Always good to see viable tooling for those of us with shallow pockets. I have been buying direct from China on Ebay lately. Some are really good some not so much. But I do a lot of stainless shafting which can be very hard so I give them quite a workout (they are designed to cut metal after all). I can say that for the money one can afford to experiment. Take care. Doug

      Hello Doug,
      There is always a sort of lottery with import tools but here I reckon there is good value for the modest cost. As you say - we can afford to experiment a bit more when the pocket doesn't take too big of a hit!

    Good review Chris. I agree that the inside/boring inserts need rounding, or the feed rate reduced quite a bit (given the small radius tip being used).
    That mystery metal looks/cut like mild steel.
    Certainly excellent value tooling. Not worth trying to make any at that price.
    Keep the camera rolling.
    Cheers Rob

    Thank you for review, man! I think, this (diamond and rhombic) inserts looks like inserts for nonferrous metals. Too shiny...

  • @PeterWMeek
    @PeterWMeek 7 лет назад

    Before you put extra radius on those inserts, remember that for proper chip breaking you need to engage the entire radius and then a bit extra. (bigger radii require deeper cuts). If your machine can't manage enough power or rigidity for those heavy cuts, you don't want excessively large radii on the inserts. I suspect that this is the reason the supplied inserts have such small radii - a 1/2" shank sort of implies a smaller lathe (AXA size tool post). This is not to say that *smoothing* the radius with a diamond hone wouldn't improve the cut; just be careful not to increase the size of the radius by too much.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687 7 лет назад

      Those inserts look like positive rake inserts made for aluminum, the positive helps a lot on smaller machines in demanding less force to cut, also carbide is performing so much better at higher speeds like 400 to 600+ feet per minute...
      And at less than $10 for a box of 10 it's easy to order different nose configurations, the honing ruins the coating...
      Chris is using a shaft less than 1", and, under that diameter, it's getting harder to achieve great surface finish unless you're running the lathe at speeds over 2000 rpm.

    • @ChrisB257
      @ChrisB257  7 лет назад

      Hi Peter, thanks,
      The machine though small is fairly capable. When I refer to radius increase I usually mean super small change. Looked at under high magnification it would be just discernible. Pretty much I think what you are describing.

    Hello Chris, greetings from wildest Bedfordshire, another wrinkly old-school machinist here. After watching your video I got a grooving tool with ten inserts from Banggood. I was amazed to see the inserts were a well known brand of very good quality items, of the brand we normally buy. I looked them up from our usual supplier and ten of them would cost six times what the tool holder and ten inserts cost from Banggood. I don't want to publicise the make or someone will stop Banggood selling them. It would be interesting to find out if they supply other inserts of this make, so I have submitted a question.
    Best Wishes, Alan

      Hi Dave,
      Thanks. I haven't actually explored the insert aspect, but I know that they do packs of 10 various suitable inserts for amazing good price. For now, I am satisfied to follow that route for these holders.

    Chris I just received my set of Bang good tools and noticed the boring bar was angled downward also. I know this video was made a while back. Did you determine the flats was correct on the boring bar or was the angle correct. The downward angle looks to much to me ? At this point I'm not sure whether to use it or contact them about it. Any help with what you figured out would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Saludos Chris, I bought a set of the tool holders. They look pretty good for the money. One question for you. The carbide bits that come with the holders. I think they are okay, but do you think they need to be sharpened. The edges I'm seeing look like they could be just a bit sharper. Thanks in advance, Keep the videos coming.

    • @ChrisB257
      @ChrisB257  7 лет назад

      Hi James,
      Best I remember, all the inserts seemed ready to go without any grind needed. "Sharpness" is not necessarily what we expect, as cutting action is still a function of geometry and rakes and reliefs etc. Some folks thought these inserts were best suited for AL - and on the site, the same insert profiles are available as the gold color. I haven't yet explored those but will.
      Bottom line IMO - inserts are ready to go.!
