This just shows the most important part of any machine tool is the person operating it! Some top level work using some very low end equipment, very impressive. I can hardly imagine how many hours you put into this, just turning down those lumps of cast iron must have taken forever!
Nice work. A reasonably easy to implement fix that can be done using the tools most hobby engineers have at their disposal. Too many people showing "Chinese Mini Lath Fixes" on RUclips end up showing how they fixed it using only an angle grinder, a tape measure......... Oh, and the fully kitted out machine shop they have !!!! It's like being given the middle finger when someone uploads a video trying to demonstrate that the only way to make your budget machine worth owning is to use several BETTER and more expensive machines to fix it. The reason most hobby engineers own budget metal working machines is because they can't afford or can't warrant the expense of anything "Better". YOU demonstrated that using the actual machine you're improving (Plus a couple other bits that could be bought for less than some might spend for the TAXI RIDES on a night out, you can make the parts needed to greatly improve the quality of this lathe. Mind you, I'm surprised as hell that this little XY table was strong and ridged enough to do what you did with it. I bought one when BangGood had them on offer ages ago, and thought it was barely good enough NOT to go straight in the bin !!! I may have to dig it out from the back of the draw I've stuck it in and have another look at it. :D

I absolutely love this. I really like my own mini lathe but the frequent adjustment required of the saddle plates is extremely annoying. This is by far the finest fix I have seen. Such creative engineering and design and such excellent workmanship! I love what we can do with these small machines with some creativity and persistence. Excellent job on all fonts!
Nice mod. Small tip: you should chamfer the bottom edges of this bronze bar - end mills always left some material in the bottom corners of the groove, so it will not fit properly until you do that.

This is very significant, a worthy upgrade. Now if someone can be so clever with the compound so that one does not have to back it almost fully off to set an angle, these mini's would be serious competition for more mainstream lathes. You should have more views! ☺

In this regard, how do you proceed to adjust the parallelism of the grooves of the table with respect to the direction of the cross slide. In the video we don't see anything about it. Several levels of genius here. Kudos to your ingenuity using that cheap X/Y table like that for milling. The adjustable gibs are a flat out stroke of genius. I have seen several different attempted fixes for this problem , Steve Jordan tried twice before he was satisfied but your design is head and shoulders above his in the end. Hard to believe you did all that without a mill.. Count me in, I'm subscribing because I have to see what else you come up with. i

I made the same mod to my mini lathe year's ago I don't have it any more but the new owner is also very satisfied with it cause it improves the clamping to the bed so much that is the weakest part in the construction of all mini lathes. Afterwoods the better rigidity brings much better results I would do it again...
VERY clever! I've been thinking about getting this type of lathe, or something similar for a while and the tricks you used to improve or outright replace poorly designed parts was inspired! I definitely like how you used the cheap XY milling platform, even more idea's!!!
Virtually all the videos featuring these Chinese mini lathes are about working on the lathe, not doing work with it. At least this one sharpened a pencil.
haha that's because if you're a content creator, you probably already have a big lathe and as mini lathe owners come to find out, their machine really isn't good for precision works. it's ok for small doodads, but when you get past about 3" in any dimension of workpiece, it's flaws start to show up. I do love my Grizzly G8688 tho several upgrades to it were needed

Actually, making parts to upgrade your lathe IS doing work with it. And it's generally quite creative, very precise work. And it's work that you probably use and appreciate every day. And further, it adds to your understanding of the lathe, its internals and the many sources of errors that any lathe may suffer from.

novel use of those Chinese X-Y tables! I thought about getting one to make a small milling machine, but decided since they are mostly aluminum it wouldn't be rigid enough. for the money though, I guess they'd be great for hobby projects

I just purchase a 7x14 chinese mini lathe was delivered a week ago it has some issues, 1st problem no retaining pin in the tail stock quill useless, 2nd saddle jump around with just a 5 thou cut no adjusting grub screw in the retainer plates, 3rd cross slide leadscrew nut stripped bolts, 4th compound slide in made out of aluminium haft to tighten the gibs to make it inoperative to stop it flexing no biggy as never used it, 5th tool post is aluminium bends when you tighten the tool retainer bolts manufacturing a new steel one, normally this is a big deal but not to me as I'm a machine tool fitter I repair all machine tools and CNC's and onsite repairs, but folks before you buy one try buy the earlier model as the 1 I have is pretty much useless out of the box its currently in pieces on my work bench so far fixed tail stock, saddle plates, lead screw nut, manufacturing new tool post out of steel, and I have hand scraped all bed and slide ways to near perfect, the only things good was spindle was good and had a 2 thou out of square for flex when cutting which was a supprise and tail stock was accurate less than 1/2 thou both ways i didnt expect that as its not common knowledge I should all so say this puppy didn't have a single drop of oil or grease anywhere, I purchased this little fella as I build guitars in my spare time and for model parts as i also build wooden ships parts which are tiny. if anyone wants to buy one do your homework as repairs can be quite expensive once fixed i'm going to modify it to be a great little lathe, will change spindle bearings for some angler contact precision bearings, i'm swaping every nut and bolt on it as there rubbish, changing out nylon gears for steel, new chuck, larger hand wheels, and swap out the motor for 1hp to start with
It was difficult to understand what was being done until the end result: a trepidation inhibitor! Very good! Just one tip: in drilling, milling and thinning the use of coolant increases the life of cutting tools. makes some mess but saves a good money!

I really like that improved gib setup. I may have to fit a similar one to my lathe. Question: Was that bronze you used for the gib strip? If so, do you think brass would be a decent substitute? (I have some brass in my stockpile, but no bronze at the moment.) Thanks!
I would think brass would wear quicker. I thought gib were always made out of harder material. Then I saw this video and was like oh. He's doing it. But if that's what you got I'm sure it won't damage your machine.

Along with the adjustable gib's you may have given thought to gluing Turcite B to the female surface's.... Turcite helps to eliminate stick slip and extends the life of the way surface.. Also look into replacing nylon / plastic gears with metal gears.... great job on what you did.

I bought the mini compound table to use with my mini lathe. I have tested today and do the work. I can´t make any agressive pas through the piece. No more dan 0.3 mm each pass. The finish was very rough, maybe because my tooling was just 2 flutes. Also, for flatenning the sides of one piece of aluminum 13 cm x 4.4 cm x 3 cm thick took me 15 minutes per side turning the handle very slow. I will try with new tolling 4 flutes tungsten if the finish could be improved. Any advise to upgrade the compound table to eliminate some movements when I dialing? Thanks!!!

I do love videos like these. But I had to turn it off. All you did was point at things, and expect your audience to know what you mean by the pointing. I am guessing many of your positive comments are very experienced with lathe work, and were happy with the pointing. But for people who have limited metal working experience, looking to learn, all this does is cause confusion. If you don’t want to talk, maybe type up what you are doing and add it to the video during editing. I hope you read my comment, it looks like you are very knowledgeable, and would be a great person to learn from. I hope to see more videos with the less experienced in mind for the future.

I'm planning to maybe buy a chinese mini lathe and I know that they're quite awfully build, but I think I could handle it and make some improvements myself. However at 0:27 is that actually out-of-the-box slop on carriage?!? I mean I really wasn't expecting quality to be that bad. I mean if it is, it looks like they totally need a bit of tlc everywhere :D
You have to assume that what you get are just parts from which you can build a passable lathe. If you count the value of your labor, you may come out cheaper to buy a better lathe to start with.
First thing I did with my mini was rework the carriage shims to a more acceptable tolerance, but still nothing near what this guy accomplished so I think I may revisit mine; another plus for his method is that you can lock the carriage too quite easily for maximum cut rigidity. The more you invest in these machines the better results you get. As a hobbyist with spare time, this is the best value for me as opposed to buying a more capable product, plus I get to improve my knowledge base with these upgrades, so it's win/ win for me. ☺
@@aceroadholder2185 if I find one for modest price and get one, I'll definitely count it to be just a hobby. If I'd even think that criteria would be to manufacture something for someone and make money I'd definitely not look into Chinese minilathe 😄

But is that actually just something like xylene, acetone or similar to remove glue residues then? Btw I was kind a "what in the name of fuck is he trying?" at when I you bolted that crossfeed table to lathe. Kudos for the idea. That was actually kind a neat idea to use it as an temporary mill :D

great for gear making, many others use a vertical slide for that, this could be better. it should be possible to make helical gears easier this way.

Why do you show two spacers under one end of the square stock, but when you do the actual cutting there is a single spacer under each end?

It is so hard to set the saddle to where it has no unwanted movement because the underside of the bed ways are not machined or constant thickness.😢

thats pretty nice but i think i would have gotten my self some brass flat bar instead of all that extra milling to get it out of that round bar but i dont make you tube videos

I do love videos like these. But I had to turn it off.
All you did was point at things, and expect your audience to know what you mean by the pointing.
I am guessing many of your positive comments are very experienced with lathe work, and were happy with the pointing.
But for people who have limited metal working experience, looking to learn, all this does is cause confusion.
If you don’t want to talk, maybe type up what you are doing and add it to the video during editing.
I hope you read my comment, it looks like you are very knowledgeable, and would be a great person to learn from. I hope to see more videos with the less experienced in mind for the future.

Awsome. I bought mine a few days ago, and not done a proper job on it yet, so I think this project will be my first, but I need to order a cross vice like yours , as I have been looking for one but they are a bit pricey.

I'm planning to maybe buy a chinese mini lathe and I know that they're quite awfully build, but I think I could handle it and make some improvements myself. However at 0:27 is that actually out-of-the-box slop on carriage?!? I mean I really wasn't expecting quality to be that bad. I mean if it is, it looks like they totally need a bit of tlc everywhere :D
You have to assume that what you get are just parts from which you can build a passable lathe. If you count the value of your labor, you may come out cheaper to buy a better lathe to start with.
First thing I did with my mini was rework the carriage shims to a more acceptable tolerance, but still nothing near what this guy accomplished so I think I may revisit mine; another plus for his method is that you can lock the carriage too quite easily for maximum cut rigidity. The more you invest in these machines the better results you get. As a hobbyist with spare time, this is the best value for me as opposed to buying a more capable product, plus I get to improve my knowledge base with these upgrades, so it's win/ win for me. ☺
@@aceroadholder2185 if I find one for modest price and get one, I'll definitely count it to be just a hobby. If I'd even think that criteria would be to manufacture something for someone and make money I'd definitely not look into Chinese minilathe 😄

@@hammerland4028 I first though that 6:18 chemical is flux and you'd solder something with ie. silver. But is that actually just something like xylene, acetone or similar to remove glue residues then? Btw I was kind a "what in the name of fuck is he trying?" at when I you bolted that crossfeed table to lathe. Kudos for the idea. That was actually kind a neat idea to use it as an temporary mill :D
