  • Hi, this is my original piano arrangement of David Wise‘s "Stickerbush Symphony" from Donkey Kong Country 2.
    ---
    UPDATE (11/21/20)
    Sheets have been transcribed by DJA28 and can be downloaded from the video description of his performance video of it:
    • Stickerbush Symphony b...
    ---
    This one took a lot more work than I had expected, and I got caught up in all kinds of little details, but it was more than worth it. Stickerbush Symphony has been requested from me ever since I started out on RUclips back in 2009, and I am so glad to finally play it, because it had been on my mind over the years, and it‘s amongst my favorite pieces of VGM ever. After I made the video of Forest Interlude a while back, I‘ve been feeling the desire to finally tackle it.
    There‘s just something special about it. It plays during some of the hardest parts of the game, yet it has this very cheerful, happy feel to it. The combination of hard gameplay and the upbeat music makes for an unforgettable experience. I am sure anyone who has played the game can relate. It does such a good job of encapsulating this feeling of keeping your spirits up in the face of struggle, which makes the struggle more manageable (as did the music in these stages, as many people who have played this game will recount).
    This arrangement was amongst the most complicated ones I‘ve ever made, and few others have ever given me such a challenge. You can‘t believe how relieved I am to have finished this, and how satisfying and rewarding it feels.
    As I have noted elsewhere, my performances are currently edited in order to compensate for finger issues and to achieve the best possible sound.

    WOW so enchanting, so nice to hear this piece played by a true pro. I used to play shima's arrangement of this song as a teen when I was obsessed with listening to the DKC soundtracks. I think Stickerbush Symphony is probably my favorite 16-bit VGM ever made, even over anything from Square's games. I'm glad completing this arrangement gave you such an immense feeling of satisfaction, as I'm sure it's fittingly comparable to finishing the bramble part of Animal Antics ;)

    • @Verdegrand
      @Verdegrand  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you. Yeah I remember how it felt having my mind blown by how good this game actually was back when it came out, and how much of an improvement it was over the first one, and how well it could position itself against the other big 16 bit franchises, Final Fantasy included. Rare really pushed it in every regard possible. And the music was obviously a big part of that. For recording the gameplay footage I played some parts of it again and was shocked how well it still plays and feels today.

    Lovely work! I grew up listening to the Grant Kirkhope arrangement for the GB port Donkey Kong Land 2, which added some changes due to the limitations of the Game Boy. In any case, this song is a great showcase of atmosphere, light, and melancholy in any of its forms, including the wonderful Super Smash Bros. Brawl arrangement a few years ago for the Wii.
    What can I say, I love this song in a million ways! And yours is as wonderful as ever.

    • @Verdegrand
      @Verdegrand  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you very much. And very interesting. For some reason I was not actively aware of the other versions of this piece. The GB version feels very different, and it also handles some of the voices differently. I only actually played the first DK Land game, didn't get the later ones. I found the rendered style to be a bit hard on the eyes on the grayscale screen, since the GB didn't yet have background lights. Might be another story on the later models.

    It always amazes me how much you manage to put such complexity in your left hand. It struck me in the Castlevania medley, especially the "super castlevania - simon theme" part, and here again. Very nice.

      Thank you. The left hand was very tricky with this, because it has so many things to do. Interesting that you would bring up the CV piano medley, because it was basically among my first videos and it's almost nine years old now. I would certainly arrange different today, so it's interesting that you would cite that as a reference.

      It was the video with which I discovered your channel, so it stuck in my memory ;) I learned a lot by listening to it too !

      @@sqliqbild Nice, that's good to hear. I think that video got a lot of people to my channel. It has a certain atmosphere to it, which has to do with the circumstances of when I arranged and recorded it. I have a vivid memory of it, and it was a very special time, brimming with both very dark and very light things at the same time. I'm still looking forward to get back to CV music as soon as the time is right. Thank you!
