Dear Michelle, To answer your question, I like REAL and that is one of the reasons why I've been watching your videos for so long. Staying real was also my compass since I started my channel, however I do sometimes feel exposed and question my direction. From the comments that I get, I see that realness is what people appreciate, but then again maybe that is only my audience. Having said that, there are also times when I simply want half an hour of completely superficial content of just handbags and shoes... so I can't really judge :) Again, as a content creator feeling exposed is a big one, and because of that I fully understand why a lot of us don't choose that road, and that is perfectly ok. Pleasure as always. Kisses. Ivana ❤
Yes, I can relate. I often want to have a conversation in my videos but I also like talking about all the things I like too. And I watch videos about stuff too, mostly homewares and gadgets, lol. Thank you for this thoughtful response. I absolutely see your channel as very genuine and I adore the glimpses into your home, your garden, and your making process. And I LOVE that you started a blog. I've been afraid blogs would vanish so that is good to see. I am excited to make time for your sweater recipe in the coming year. I really think it would be fun to mention it here and maybe others will join me in knitting it along with your viewers. I have some things I want to explore in self-drafting patterns in the next year (mostly just discuss) and your recipe is a perfect starting point to recommend for anyone who is afraid to step outside of a rigid pattern. I'm gonna stop now and take this over to your comments, lol... I will enjoy seeing where you take your channel in the coming days. I have realized that keeping things real takes precedence over everything else, so that may limit some things but it certainly frees me to enjoy myself and be myself.
I have always enjoyed your intro and exit music. I love that you are authentic. I enjoy real life sprinkled in amongst the knitting - cooking, gardening, other artistic endeavors, even sore backs (LOL). Hopefully you will continue sharing your thoughts, knits, and the comments of many of your viewers - that is a nice touch.
Thank you, Carrie, for letting me know! I don't think I could have too narrow a focus for my vlogs, but it is good to know you enjoy a more full vision of RUclipsrs you follow. I feel that way, too. I love when a video sidetracks, lol.
Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry I got busy and missed this video. This is my favorite type of RUclips content! Personal, real, witty, informative, inspiring, and intelligent! ❤ p.s. Thank you for highlighting Olga Poltava’s beautiful Scarlet Skirt! It’s definitely a dream project which would be perfect for Valentine’s Day or another special occasion. ❤
Another great and entertaining podcast Michelle. I always appreciate the things you talk about and share. As far as what I look for and watch on RUclips? I love, follow, and share other knitting podcasters that mostly do a “standard” format. I love those with great personalities. I love seeing what others are making, using, and looking forward to making. That’s pretty much what I do on my channel as well. I find it soothing to watch while I’m knitting and I love being inspired by other projects. Maybe it IS the same thing others are talking about and doing but it IS what what I find most helpful and entertaining. I do also enjoy those that share a little of themselves and their lives. It helps me to feel like I “know” them. I’ve become friends with others this way and it’s fun to share my love of knitting with others. Thank you for being true to who you are. I share you to my viewers over and over again because of it. ❤
I really appreciate that, Christie! I was watching your podcast the other day and my husband sat down by me and asked who I was watching. I told him you're a knitting friend that is refreshingly just being herself and inviting us into her home to talk knitting. I love that and it is the only kind of knitting podcast I watch. I'm glad there are other podcasters who like the show progress and talk about projects and future projects format because it's the closest thing to a knit night for many of us. Thanks for your comments. I will get better about commenting too. I think I don't comment much because I watch podcasts thru Apple TV and can't leave a comment easily - then I forget to go back and do it. Every time. But if it makes such a difference to me to get feedback, I should be doing it for the RUclipsrs I enjoy too.
I'm so glad to hear this Alison! I was blown away by how many great summer tops (and the winter designs too, ahem) you all talked about. I got so many new ideas, too.
For Content: I find that I stay a long-term viewer of people who clearly present ideas and solutions to knitting challenges. A knitting friend who can relate to the passion we have for our craft. I'm not a fan of very long "yarn hulls" but do appreciate learning about new tools, books, or misc. items of interest occasionally. Next Question was is that what I watch: Yes, 65% of what I watch on television is related to knitting. But it is not just content. It's also the aesthetic - clean, fresh, relaxed conversation, etc... There are people I really focus on and yes there are times when I have it playing in the background like an audiobook. It's connecting with others that is most important. Even though we may never "talk" it's comforting knowing the people you have come to know are out there and what they are experiencing.
I think I do the same thing with a video in the background while working on something. Home DIYs, campers, and decor stuff are probably most of what I watch. With knitting coming in second. And it is just about the person's way of communicating with me. I typically just go to websites for details on products. The feeling of their videos is as important as the info they communicate, kind of like you invite a friend over not so much for how up-to-date the things they say are, but for who they are and how it makes you feel. Thanks for sharing, Stacy!!
I enjoy personal stories and video bits. I enjoy fiber content but I don’t watch these videos for a lesson. I prefer that the fiber content be about things that you are making or considering making. I am enjoying your questions and thinking. Other crafts are interesting also.
I just wanted to add that you are new to me and kept me engaged for the whole show. I enjoyed having thoughtful questions! I continued to think about those questions and how I could apply concepts within my own businesses. So I think you are doing a fantastic job.
Thank you for letting me know this, Stacy! I expect viewers to fade in and out, especially in long episodes, but it is nice to hear these videos are engaging. I'm curious to know how you'll apply the things said here or in the comments in your own work if you feel comfortable sharing?
I really enjoy your effort to interact with those watching. Also like hearing your views on the process of producing content. You always include a variety of patterns which always engages me. I would like to find a way through all the choices and just what is possible to accomplish. I’m looking for a knit night kind of experience where people just chat, share tips and ideas on knitting and their life.
Thank you, Maureen! I am thinking when you say you'd like a way to organize all of the choices and see what is doable you mean that hearing about skill required, cost and time commitment would be helpful when we talk about projects? I have a couple of other topics I'd like to talk about in the next months that may take a few episodes each and I want to keep what you said in mind as I plan how to break things up and progress on the subject. I always filter projects thru how approachable and affordable they are when I search online. Thanks for the feedback.
Another summer yarn to try is Juniper Moon Zooey. It’s made up of 60% cotton and 40% linen. Other than occasional splitting, I am enjoying knitting with it.
Tyres melting 😱🥵 omg no!! I’m so lucky our temps are moderate 95F and that’s when we whinge but thankfully don’t have too many days above that maybe 10-14 each year. I feel for you guys 🫠 Hope your back gets better soon, nothing worse than doing something mundane and boom out goes your neck or back! Ouf, rude! Thanks for the fun that was epic and love all the photos, wow! That was so much work. Content wise on RUclips; oh boy, I swing all over the place depending on my mood. Number one is knitting 💪🏻number two could be interesting interviews with people I’m curious about and lastly would be any (usually creative) rabbit hole I’ve fallen down that I just want to learn about. Also a bit of current trash every now and then 🤯🤮 makes me thankful I’m “normal” 🤭 I can listen/watch while I work sometimes too so I’m lucky. My knitting podcasts are my online friends (yes that’s you) that I like to catch up with who have no idea we’re friends 🤣 I know no one irl that knits and my hubby can only listen so much 🥱 2: nope I take control and I will use the search bar if the algorithm gets controlling 🤭🤣 or if it’s time to come out of a rabbit hole and switch it up I’ll mess the algorithm up, I’m sure it thinks I’m either 3 people or need medication. Content from you…. whatever brings you joy as you’re fun to hang out with! Time is my most precious resource and I guard it well. I’m a rebel too, you do you! Much gratitude, Karen 🥰
Thanks for the feedback, Karen, and the well wishes. My back is just about normal again and hasn't been hurting for over a week. So I'm feeling great. I like the idea of purposely throwing the algorithm off. Have you seen the Diary of a CEO episode with a Google AI expert? I'm glad you recommended that podcast to me as there are so many different topics covered. I really try not to get sucked into too many time-wasters online. By time wasters I mean outrage focused, click baitey things. I also have to watch out for an hour-long collection of clips of animals doing weird things, lol. BUt when it comes to makers I enjoy, I also am cool with seeing a variety of content on their channels. I don't mind simple things, like someone cleaning out a kitchen cabinet and talking as they do it, lol.
@@mysocalledhandmadelife Yes I saw that episode on diary of a CEO, very interesting. I try not to go too deep in things that I have no control over otherwise I end up anxious and overwhelmed 🫣 I watch all sorts of things as well, sometimes I’ll find a channel of what people are wearing on the streets in New York or Italy, it’s like being there people watching like I would do on holidays, so I find that fun. Then I’ll listen to audiobooks while I work, escapist and makes my mind colour in the characters, don’t read a lot these days so audiobooks fill that gap while I work. I’ve just done another clothes clear out. I’m finally at the stage that my wardrobe has nothing that I have to throw away, you know that category of keep donate or throw away? If my clothes are not good enough to donate then they shouldn’t be in my wardrobe. I keep a set for painting and getting messy and the rest need to go to rags. I’ve given away quite a bit that were taking up space that I know I’ll never wear it because I’m picking something else over it. My life has changed a lot in the last few years so I am being ruthless in my wardrobe to make it a place of joy. Not judging myself too harshly, just letting go and letting them find a new home 💪🏻 I like creating so clothes are just the end product of what I like to do. I could spend money on coffee and lunches and have nothing to show for it except happy memories so I’m learning not to be hard on myself for what brings joy and just enjoy the good fortune I have. My mum gives me such a hard time so it’s been a lesson in shame and not accepting her judgement!!! Ah life 🤭🤣💕 thankfully my husband is my cheerleader
In knitting/crochet podcasts I like the style of “here’s what I’m making, here’s what I want to make, here’s what I acquired, here’s some life stuff.” Within the last year or two I tried to expand who I watch for knitting podcasts because my usual ones weren’t updating enough and I ran out. I absolutely hate topic- or influencer-style podcasts and I tried to watch a few and it just did not work for me. All RUclips videos that I watch, regardless of topic, are longform slice-of-life authentic vlogs/podcasts (as much as RUclips allows - I understand the need for people to promote products and do ads if their podcasts are their job - as long as it isn’t like, a good chunk of the content). I love that style so much! HG Designs Crochet does all thing granny square and they’re sooo cute! Re: your response to the AI. You’re right, we do like predictable 😂 I think when I imagine AI-generated patterns I picture the error-ridden bad patterns from big yarn brands - I have never had a good experience using a pattern from those places, but I do like a comfy simple pattern as much or more than a complex, super detailed pattern. It absolutely is a dance/balance of information, skill, and art. Upon reflection, yes for me the difference is “knowing” the designer - I love promoting the designer and the yarn if I like the pattern.
Oh, and by topic-based I mostly mean the article-style you described - “top 10 back-to-school patterns YOU NEED TO KNIT!!” “Must-have notions!!” Etc. Pointless to me!
@@EventualKnits Yeah I feel like we got to see content change to commercial-sounding listicles in the 2010s and I thought it was an annoying phase. I had no idea it would become the norm and then the end of the blog era. I hope it's not signaling the end of the podcast era, too.
It sounds like you're on the same page with everyone else here, Leah. It's got me thinking that I really need to go a step further when I enjoy watching things by commenting or liking more often. I watch on my TV while I knit (often at night) and say," I'll comment later when I'm in front of my computer." but then I forget. I should just keep my phone handy and do what I can to promote content I truly like in the hopes that it will survive the algorithm bc those comments mean a lot to me and it's selfish to not do the same for people I really enjoy watching. Then there's the bonus of guiding the algorithm to recommend better stuff for me, hopefully. Speaking of podcasters I love, do you think you'll start podcasting again, or is life just too full now? I'm sure your stepping away from the consumerism and chaos of social media makes podcasting harder to get back into- not to mention your little one :) I took a step back and haven't stepped back in fully so I don't know what all is happening in the knitting community or what patterns are the most popular but I'm interested to see how it will shape the channel. It's kind of an experiment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. If anyone has an excuse to be too busy to comment it is you!
Another fantastic episode with lots of good knitting AND lots of thought provoking questions! And thank you for calling me out TWICE during this episode (once when you talked about the crochet skirt, the other time when you talked about STRANGE ATTACHMENTS lolololol just kidding!!!). The patterns - so many fun, new-to-me designers! My knitting energy has been replaced by sewing over the last few months, but this episode definitely relit the fire! the garments are all beautiful, but I’m not sure I need another knit summer garment (we are quickly edging toward 100 degrees here…) so I’m thinking I’ll do some crochet accessories after I finish my current Musselburgh beanie project. Although I do LOVE that Calad Shirt pattern! Don’t tempt me, I am still working mostly with stash… And I loved that crochet skirt, it looks very 40’s. I added a bunch of new stuff to my Favorites. In terms of content, I love creators who infuse personal in their videos. I actually don’t think it even matters to me what the specific content is (although I have my topics I love - crafts, camping/hiking/backpacking, and productivity type stuff). Those are the channels that make me hit subscribe and watch all their videos. And I LOVE videos like your First Person series. I think I’ve told you that one of my favorite channels is the aesthetic camping channel. That said, I also love watching/listening to music on YT and YES I will sometimes get drawn into pop culture videos, etc. But it’s rare that I will subscribe be and watch those channels over and over. From YOU, I love the mix you have done over the last week or so. I know that was a big output from you and WOW, I am truly impressed!! But I love your podcast style because it highlights your amazing personality (and leads to questions to engage your watchers) and I love the First Person stuff because it’s a different side of you and it’s very soothing to watch and listen to. You’re making me think more and more that I should start my own channel…
Yeah, I love when knitters give me recs because I'm not online as much to see new stuff or old stuff I missed. I'm committed to finishing two crochet pieces this official summer and getting Calad off of my hook before October, which is still our summer. :/ Housewares and accessories is a good focus for knitting or crochet right now. Like you, we are scorched. I can't even walk the dogs because dirt and pavement is hot much later than normal. Lately, I mostly watch home DIY videos ... or UFO hearings stuff, lol. There are a few informative shows I watch too, but I never watch all the way through those videos. I like "meeting people" thru their videos and seeing how they're cooking or decorating their homes. I subscribed to the camping video you recommended and get regular notifications of new videos. They are very soothing and inspiring, like a bit of outdoors even when I can't go anywhere. I did produce a lot in a small amount of time, especially considering I had software trouble and my Mac died. But I'm back to being a slacker this week since it was our last real week with Jesse at home from school. We did as much stuff with the kids as we could because we have one more Xmas holiday and then he will be moving out for real. It took a little arm twisting but I'm sure he'll be glad he spent some time with us, lol!
Oh and I only wish all of my "strange attachments" ended in a trip to Iceland, lol! I just looked in my rav messages history and we friended in 2012. Sniff, sniff... that's eleven years of strange attachment.
I like how you are like sitting with a friend, thank you. I so enjoyed your hike and knit episode I like vlog style podcasts I like ones that show more than just knitting. We are more than just knitters. We have various interest and I assume you do too. Ones where they’ll cook and share recipes or other crafts sometimes. Maybe sometimes out and about stuff. Pretty much just life stuff and sharing. Really shy from podcast of someone talking for over an hour is at times is too much. Okay that’s my 2 cents. Kat from Oklahoma
Thanks for sharing Kat! I completely agree about wanting to see a well-rounded look into people's lives - if they want to share. I like when a talking head video is occasionally substituted with a thrift store trip vlog, etc. I can see how more than an hour would feel like too much, though I have certainly made videos like that, lol. I can handle someone talking to the viewers for a long time, but I really can't take watching someone talk to camera and reply to live stream questions and comments at the same time. That is too much stimuli for me. Thanks for the feedback.
So many of the suggested patterns are beautiful. Unfortunately, I just cannot focus on knitting right now. I'm in California and it's 100 degrees at 8pm when I finally go outside to swim in my warm bathtub of a pool. I will save a few of these and consider knitting in the fall. I can also see wearing some of these as vests over a turtleneck shirt in the winter. CONTENT: My ideal content may be unique as I am INTJ. I love (and ONLY watch/listen) to content that makes me think. I love learning new things. With that said, your content does just that, think and teach. I refuse to even follow knitters/crocheters who follow the format that others are using (Welcome back..., and if you are new, welcome..., WIPS, finished projects, acquisitions....). Yes, I want to talk about knitting! but I do not want to hear the same spiel as the video before. Be unique. Be yourself. Do your own thing. Show your personality. What this channel does and is great at; sharing your individual ideas, thoughts, trials, and tribulations. You do not follow a "standard" format. You do not apologize for not putting on make-up or for the style of your hair. You are not being sponsored by a jewelry, shoe, perfume, or purse company. Your fingernails are not painted. You do not sound rehearsed or scripted. You do not say, "super, super cute" (your vocabulary is larger than that). I like seeing how much you have grown/changed. I like seeing how human you are (missing the heel on a sock). I like that you don't rush through things as if you must squeeze in as much content as possible. Your speech is comfortably slow/normal and pleasing to the ear. What would I suggest adding/changing: I cannot think of a single thing.
Every once in a while, as I consider a change in how I do this channel, I take the temperature of viewers, to see if this is something people really want to see. Clearly, my views aren't in the influencer realm (but I think that would stress me out, lol). It is so good to hear these thoughts, Edina because I feel the same way about what I watch. It doesn't have to be super informative, or deep but just a touch of a human being presenting something I can relate to, or phrasing something in a way that sends my mind off on its own tangent. I love that. Even just watching someone who feels familiar provides an emotional memory that also satisfies that need. I recently took the personality test and saw that I'm an INFJ-T. I don't see it as the end-all definition of myself, but I was quite startled when I read my results. It was like the site had overheard a conversation I'd just had with my sister that discussed many of those traits, lol! It was uncanny and also cast helpful light on certain ways I relate to people. I love that you find this a place for ideas, thoughts, trials, and tribulations. Because that is the stuff of life!! And I haven't read the comments on the last FPM video yet, but I wondered if hearing about difficulties resonates with you all or if it is just too much. I mean, I felt like it was actually a pretty positive vibe overall, but sometimes you gotta go thru the details of the pain to get there. Anyway, I'm encouraged that the direction I'm going here is the right one for now. Thank you!
Absolutely! So do you enjoy working with summer-type yarns or are you stuck on wool? I love the feeling of knitting wool but I am feeling a need for summer knits and so am thinking of keeping one working in the background all thru the next year. We'll see....
I enjoy making baby gifts in the summer and setting them aside for when they are needed. For my summer knitting, I started the "Staple Linen Top" by Joji. I bought a budget linen blend in white, but I don't have it near and can't remember the name.
Yes, the Staple Linen top is beautiful. Light, airy, and sleeveless. I have the pattern, too, but have queued too many things to even focus on it, now. Did you use sport-weight yarn for it? I was thinking I might could get away with Lindy Chain when I favorited it. I do like Remix Light, too (as a sportweight). I'm sure you'll love that top and wear it a ton in summer.
I really enjoy your podcast because you are not trying to copy other people. I have found a lot of podcasts are the same format with the same big name pattern designers. If you do what you want to do hopefully that will mean you enjoy making and we enjoy watching because you are having fun. Does that make sense?
It does. It's very simple isn't it? Much like anything else in life: when you like what you're doing and it doesn't feel like a chore, you're a whole lot easier to be around. I do like making videos. I'm surprised by how much. It's like I said in the first one. I missed talking to my grandmother regularly, so I talk to you all instead. I really don't talk much in my everyday life, lol. So I guess I save it all up for you. Hahaha! I think the idea of RUclips as an income has changed podcasting too. It's not all bad, I like thinking that people I enjoy make some money so they can continue on. But I do think it leads to a lot of repetition. Thanks for the encouraging feedback, Heather!
I completely agree with your take on the algorithm. It’s actually why I stopped making videos. I really value authenticity and I didn’t feel like I could be authentically me if I wanted views, which is a bummer, and I wasn’t willing to ‘fake it’. Maybe one day I’ll get over the need for views LOL, I did enjoy putting out content when I did. As far as your content, I love the direction you’ve taken with first person maker. Keep going with it! 😊
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Eunice! I wondered what happened to your podcast! I went looking for your progress on the Spicier Life blanket KAL. I am so grateful to you for suggesting Sandra Paul to me! I know other viewers are too. SHe's a treasure trove of crochet projects, especially ones that work well with stashbusting. Making videos is a lot of trouble. Even when you tell yourself you're not into slick, pro-looking videos, a simple video takes a lot of uploading, compressing, and editing time. It is hard to find time for it when you also need to be earning money or have a busy life. I'm not sure how I will balance it all in the coming months as I begin to work again. I am frustrated by the algorithm hiding makers who don't have a certain amount of interaction from me and I don't like the artificial template I feel many podcasters have placed over their channels recently. So, I can see why you'd not enjoy being part of it and stop trying to do it. But if it is in any way good for you to make them, I'd say make them just for you, close friends, and/ or anyone who happens to meet you along the way.
Isn't growing older interesting? Picking up a piece of paper off the floor can bring many surprises. I often wonder if our elders kept the surprises of aging a secret from us for a reason LOL
Ha! I don't think my relatives hid it from me. I just think I didn't realize I was nearing that age. I have quit stretching and doing yoga or Pilates for a few years, just because I like to get out and walk or b like or run. But I am going to work it back into my week and hopefully, I won't have these back sprains as bad. While dealing with this I found myself making a grunt as I reached to get something and remember my grandmother doing that when I was young and I thought it was funny. Not so funny now🙄

I feel for you guys 🫠
Hope your back gets better soon, nothing worse than doing something mundane and boom out goes your neck or back!
My knitting podcasts are my online friends (yes that’s you) that I like to catch up with who have no idea we’re friends 🤣 I know no one irl that knits and my hubby can only listen so much 🥱
2: nope I take control and I will use the search bar if the algorithm gets controlling 🤭🤣 or if it’s time to come out of a rabbit hole and switch it up I’ll mess the algorithm up, I’m sure it thinks I’m either 3 people or need medication.
Yes!!!!! Do it! More response later when I have time, lol....
Yeah, I love when knitters give me recs because I'm not online as much to see new stuff or old stuff I missed. I'm committed to finishing two crochet pieces this official summer and getting Calad off of my hook before October, which is still our summer. :/
Housewares and accessories is a good focus for knitting or crochet right now.
Thank you!
I have found my people - Texan Knitters! Well, I'm in both TX and CA, but both are ideal for summer knits.
By the way- the Tolsta tee is available as fingering or dk in same pattern. I’m doing striped bright pink and orange stripes.
Thank you so much for telling me that! I changed how I "filed" it my favorites to make one day. fingering bumps it higher on my list.
@@mysocalledhandmadelife I am well into this knit and am quite pleased with how it’s coming.
@@maureencapotosto9257 good to know!
