    Good morning, Juliane. The scenery was outstanding today. The mountains and trees were great, very beautiful. I love the feeling and sight of you walking through those big, tall trees. Looking up through the canopy to catch glimpses of the sky must be quite awe-inspiring. I really appreciate all the work you do to bring us these daily vlogs. I thank you for making the extra time to film all day, edit, and then upload them to YT. And you're good at it. When I hear choppers, I, as a former Army medic, always think first of rescue. But if I were hiking the PCT in the heat of summer, I'd probably think fire. So glad you're able to continue to hike and get around them. Look forward to you and Somewhere hiking together again. I think it will be fun and good for both of you to be able to end your hike together. I'm gonna miss your videos though, when you finish. Take care, Juliane. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

    While we can only rely on ourselves, no person is an island. I learned to make sure I could always take care of myself while also trying to build relationships that would help build me up.
    Communication...truly a two-way street including compromise and listening. If a person is not open to real communication you might as well be talking to one of those stumps you hike by daily.
    As for being dragged...comes with the territory, haters are always going to be there. My advice is to block and move on, no need to explain yourself. If one pays attention they will see the truth, If they want to, if not, nothing you can do will change it. Wasted Energy!
    Somewhere, your lesson, your teacher, your bringer of growth, she truly is a remarkable woman, someone we can all learn from, as are you Juilane. Can't wait to hear about your next adventure.

    Another beautiful day on trail. You have to rely on yourself and your abilities, first and foremost. I love the relationship that you and Somewhere have. You are both independent and don't try to change the other person. You can go without seeing each other for a while and then meet up. It seems easier to hike with others without too many expectations and enjoy the company. Whenever you say "WE" are doing something, I just assume that you mean yourself and all of us stuck in your phone. Thanks for sharing your whit and wisdom. Happy trails. 👣👣👣

    It is possible to do. When Eric Ryback became the first person to hike the PCT in 1970, he did it 100% on his own relaying on no one but himself. No tramily, no trail angers, no trail magic, no other thru hikers, no social media. Though the last one was probably a big plus.

    Regarding 2025 plans...our family camps every year on the 4th of July at Plasses Resort near Carson Pass. This year I told my son, who did the PCT in 2016, that I want to do Trail Magic this year and what day I want to do it. Well, it just so happened that when we all arrived at Carson Pass, my son saw the legendary Legend, who was a trail angel for my son in 2016. I was moved to do trail magic on that day and I'm so glad I listened to my own sixth sense because meeting Legend was a truly amazing experience; especially knowing that he took care of my son all along the his PCT experience. Anyway... we decided that we will do Trail Magic at Carson Pass every 5th of July. Next year will be the 2nd 4th Annual Carson Pass Trail Magic Event (named by Legend). We will make T-shirts for the event and will be either at the Carson Pass Ranger station or at the Meiss Meadow trail parking area. You are welcome to come. We will have a shirt for you. PM me if you'd like to join.

    Very often helicopters are out simply training - because they are obliged to do x-y-z amount of training scenarios pr month/year to be “licensed “ to do a lot of what they do :)
    (I live by an area where there are a couple of spots where there are “tricky” landscapes to navigate, and we often see them over there training to be able to do the difficult stuff when they really need to - and thank you so much to them for keeping that work up! :) )

    Wisdom 1 and 2 are more Life wisdoms than just PCT only. And #3 is definitely PCT or ACT. Very pretty views today, nice hike except helicopter noises which should make you a little tense. As you can see there is a lot of dry wood around, the floor of the forest is green but the rest of it is not. Fires start easy and spread fast. Maybe not as bad a North California but still scary. Hope you can do your reroute vs another skip. 2025 will include your missing sections and Trail Days on the AT and PCT? Then how are you going to get in a thru hike around those dates?? Eager to see your plan! Stay safe!

    It seems you only “rely” on others when it is a benefit to you, ie, latching on to Bosbay and Birdcall to get you through the Sierras. Now that they are no longer needed, you’ve left them.

      Lots of hikers latch onto each other for the Sierra - it's the safe thing to do. But if someone is slower/faster than you, you either can stay frustrated at their pace or separate. HD is keeping in touch with them.

  • @rfbolton
    @rfbolton 21 день назад +3

    This episode was fascinating to me. Early on you mentioned that another hiker had claimed that he or she had never seen such beautiful scenery, and you were anticipating it. Then when the fog burned off, you were in the midst of that scenery and only showed it minimally. I commented on yesterday's video that I thought the scenery north of Snoqualmie is far more interesting than even the Goat Rocks section, and indeed to my eyes that is VERY true, but you made absolutely no mention of it. It shows how different we all are from one another. I've climbed and hiked in those mountains all my life, and for me the big verticality and the bare, rugged peaks and ridges inspire awe and wonder that I can't even express, while for you and others, the "green tunnel" is best. That long 6-mile uphill where you were sharing your trail wisdom - I hiked that 41 years ago in 1983, and the memories of the fabulous, expanding views were burned into my brain so that I will never forget it. If it were me hiking that section I wouldn't have even been able to think of trail wisdom, much less talk about it. I would have been ooooing and awwwwing about those amazing views! 🙂 I have taken many photos of the scenery in many mountainous areas around the country, and my favorite scenes are always the rugged Cascades of Washington. Yet nobody in my life seems to see what I see, and my photos seemingly aren't even noticed by my friends and family. What is it that makes us all react so differently? I used to think that when my friends and family didn't notice my photos of the rugged wilderness it was because they had no clue what they were looking at, or couldn't fathom the scale because that is impossible in a two-dimensional presentation created with a wide-angle lens. But I always assumed that if they saw it with their own eyes and experienced the awe and wonder that I experience, surely that would help them to understand my reactions and see what I see in the photos. But after watching this episode and seeing that you hardly noticed, I'm thinking I still have no understanding of the differences between people in this regard. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but you did open my eyes with today's episode. One more thing - I'll be very sorry if you decided for an alternate route because you'll miss some of the most outstanding mountain scenery imagineable through the Glacier Peak Wilderness and the first 30-odd miles of the Pasayten Wilderness (north from Rainy Pass to Harts Pass). But I have to wonder if you would even notice, given your preference for the green tunnel and views of rolling tree-covered ridges. I would love to hear/read your "trail wisdoms" and perspective on this topic if you would be so inclined. Cheers!

    • @meme9775
      @meme9775 21 день назад

      I would imagine that in the 41 years since you hiked that section, quite a few trees may have blocked the views that you enjoyed, no? I also wonder if the trail has been rerouted at all from blowdowns, avalanche activity, etc? Just curious as I know a lot can change from year to year, let alone decade to decade. You are fortunate to have witnessed such splendor. And film cannot capture the entire view, nor the quiet (hopefully) and the incredible smell. 😊

    • @rfbolton
      @rfbolton 21 день назад +1

      @@meme9775 Your thoughts are reasonable, however if you watched closely you could see that the scenery was there, it just wasn't being featured. She very clearly covered the same trail that was quite new back in '83 and built by a company in Leavenworth owned by a friend of my family. The old route of the Cascade Crest Trail, before it was included in the PCT system and before the segment in question was built, used to follow the drainages deep into the valleys and back up to the passes. There was no doubt that she hiked the same trail I did 41 years ago and that the trees were little, if any, denser than then. There were quite a few dead snags visible which may mean there was a fire, and even if not the kinds of trees in alpine country are such that they don't block much view and have a very short growing season. Are you a backpacker or hiker or climber? If so, what kind of scenery captures your eye and gives you a thrill? I'm beginning to figure out that there must be a rather wide range of reactions to the same scenery. Of course this is understandable because we all have different experiences in life and such, but I kept thinking Roadrunner would be won over by what is to me an overwhelming sense of awe and wonder caused by spectacular verticality and steepness combined with alpine glory. Looks like that may not happen after all. Thanks!

      @meme9775 19 дней назад +1

      While I do enjoy those magnificent vistas, I personally prefer waterfalls, lakes and oceans. Those gorgeous alpine lakes are a favorite. I am in awe of the ruggedness of the PCT and can’t help but imagine how it may have looked to the first explorers.

      I know. I don't know why she worries about the fog. She is just going to keep walking full speed ahead with her head down any way.
