- In this video, I go through the types of single action revolvers and how to load, unload, cock, and decock. This is great information if you are interested in becoming an NRA pistol instructor, or just want to learn more about single action revolvers or improve your gun handling skills. This is the first video in the series (total of 4).

Nice job covering the basics. It amazes me how many people haven't been trained in the basics, or have forgotten them. I would like to see many more shooters become Instructors, just for the additional training.
Another thing to add, coming from outside the smokeless community: so many cowboy action shooters use those wax bullets and reprime those .209 primers. They still LOOK struck but they do go bang, and at 650fps, that wax will out your eye.
Yikes. These are homemade dummy rounds. Definitely don't want to get shot even with wax bullets.
This was awesome. Gonna look at your other stuff to prep for the instructor class myself. Can I ask what gear should I own to get through the instructor class? What guns? What demo stuff? Do I need to have it before the class?
That depends on your training counselor. My classes are all inclusive - meaning I provide everything you would need to run a basic class. Before you start teaching you would have to have dummy ammo and at least one single-action revolver, one double action revolver, and one semi-automatic (assuming pistol instructor). For rifle, you would have to have one lever action, one bolt action, and one semi-auto. Other guns are great, but of course you can always explain other action types with videos, pictures, posters etc. But you have to have the minimum. The biggest hangup with firearms instruction is make sure you have your range facility setup. You have to have a place to shoot.
Before your class, make sure you know the stuff from basic and read the book cover to cover. Beyond that, make sure you can do the pre-course handling exercises and that you are prepared to shoot the qualifier. The pistol qualifier is one that is difficult for a lot of pistol shooters because they expect it to be rapid fire at a large target, it is not. It is a 9 inch target at 15 yards and you must shoot a 6 inch group. Make sure you know where your pistol hits (and ideally adjust the sights so that it hits exactly where you aim).

My insides screamed NO! When you indexed to the sixth chamber and loaded a sixth round, even though it was just a snap cap. Maybe I was learned different, I’m not saying you’re wrong. Can you explain why you didn’t leave an empty sixth chamber?
Modern cowboy guns have transfer bar safeties, no need to leave the sixth chamber empty.
If your gun does not have a transfer bar you load, skip, then load 4. That leaves the chamber under the hammer empty.
It does depend on the gun, but it's safe in this one. It is a good point, and you definitely need to know for sure.
dont single action also model after S&W open top, well i had a baby russian model 3 in 38s&w (was black powder) beautiful little revolver didnt have a trigger guard… they made some for modern powder… anyways…
If I had one I would show it. They are pretty rare now, but you could possibly come across a single or double action break top.
