  • NRA Pistol Instructor Pre-qualification (video 4) - Clearing Malfunctions in semi-automatics
In this video, I go through clearing all malfunctions for semi-automatic pistols. This is great information if you are interested in becoming an NRA pistol instructor, or just want to learn more about semi-automatics or improve your gun handling skills. This is the fourth video in the series (total of 4).
Please ask questions in the comments or email me. I am hopeful that this will help people who are trying to improve their handling skills.
PLEASE NOTE: in clearing a failure to fire, you would make sure to examine what comes out of the chamber (to ensure it is NOT a SQUIB load) before you resume firing.
Left-handed handling techniques video is here:

This video was shot with unloading guns, using inert (dummy) ammunition in a safe environment by a professional.

Thank you for the series! It's always reassuring to see that I already know things I "thought" I knew.

Very good explanation and examples of how to clear the four types of problems encountered in pistol shooting. I don't want to date myself, but when I started instructor schools it was tap, rack, bang, not tap, rap, assess. Lol Thanks for a good series Mr. Murphy.

It just very recently changed, but both are accepted. The other very recent change that I see taking hold that I have a lot of trouble adjusting to is trigger "press" instead of "squeeze ". I may always call it a squeeze.....

@@murphyfirearmstraining3630 When I was instructing a class at Quantico 6 years ago one of the other Instructors said they changed squeeze to press as the shooters wouldn't impart a twist to the gun. They said the word press helped the students pull straight to the rear on the trigger.🤷🤷🤷

@@brutalbob3982 bit with true beginners, press turns into jerk, which causes them to shoot low. I guess it depends on the level of the shooter.

Enjoyed the series. You closed the video with the gun on its side, chamber covered....did so several times.

Good catch. I will say it is nothing I would ding anyone for, but if someone lays it that way in a class, I would ask them to turn it over.
The way I catch myself from doing this in classes is that I always insert flags into every gun, and that makes me catch that before I walk away.

Very good instruction. I would add, under FTF (scenario 3), that it is CRITICAL to verify that it was a FTF and not a squib fire. Just reloading and continuing to shoot the next round without verification could result in damage to your gun, your face, or even more. If that's not part of the NRA instruction set I highly recommend it be added.

Bob, I totally agree. Very good point. Although with modern factory ammo, squibs are exceedingly rare, you do have to watch out for them.
I tell folks to always look at what comes out of the chamber. If it is a whole round of ammunition, then keep firing. If not, make sure your barrel is clear.
