Excellent fight. I had the privilege of refereeing one of Benny's fights in Vancouver, Canada. A superb athlete and fighter he won convincingly and afterwards spent some time in a friendly and inspirational way with some of my students. A real gentleman.
Benny is a legend of legends. he introduced kickboxing to the world . and defeated all the Japanese champs who challenged him especially the guy who came out of retirement to fight him the famous Kunimatsu Okao. he deserves much more respect from the world of martial arts
I remember watching it live. All these years later, it still gives me chills. Benny, what a class act. Much respect to Okao as well. Thank you champions.
I wish I could watch it live I can’t even imagine how exciting it would feel before the fight started nothing like this happens nowadays champions don’t fight champions like they used to it’s sad
Had the pleasure of watching Benny fight a number of full contact competitions while he came to Hawaii. Loved his style, sportsmanship, and the respect he displayed for his opponents. A true gentleman.
Important movements: 1:09 Benny is beaten and falls. 4:22 Benny is beaten on his face. 6:12 Benny throws spinning kick. 7:51 Benny begins to deliver the blows series that KO Okao.
I love how in these old fights the fighters have so much class and show each other the utmost respect. Just don't see that in the freakshow MMA world of today.
Such a brutal vicious finish! This one and the Suzuki fight established Urquidez as a feared fighter on the Japanese KB circuit. For someone coming from trad.KB it's amazing how quickly he was able to adapt to low kicks, knees, sweeps/throws and the clinching game. Techniques wise not yet on his peak here I guess but as far as speed, accuracy, durability, killerinstinct and pure heart he must've been on his peak around 77-79. Nice spinning back kick in the third and then a grueling pace in the fourth, once Okao gets rattled Urquidez goes in for the kill with a brutal barrage of punches mixed with some straight kicks and then it's good night Okao!
I still have a copy of a Karate Illustrated magazine article from the 70s where Benny Urquidez stated that he had no doubts that Bruce Lee could have been a Full Contact champion. Urquidez showed nothing but admiration and respect towards Lee. The opposite of what some 'experts' are commenting here.

Mad respect for both fighters, class acts, but gotta love the jet!!
Urquidez only looks away from his opponent oncew during the entire fight. That's how he was able to just rain hell on Okau. He watched and read every move. Okau kept looking away and was barely seeing what his opponent was doing during the second half.
