One of the great losses in tv today is the disappearance of many of the "girl next door" girls and women on tv. In the 60's, 70's and 80's you had many girls and women that had a very natural beauty (examples could be Bailey Quarters from WKRP, Winnie Cooper from Wonder Years or Kimberley Drummond from Diff'rent Strokes). The final picture of this video truly makes me long for the days that there were just "nice" girls on tv that reminded you of certain girls you would meet in every day life. Nowadays, the vast majority of female characters on tv look like they are straight out of central casting where they all must fit "the look" rather than "the character". What a loss.
And there I was, blissfully scrolling through youtube. A thumbnail from my childhood appeared...and now that damn song is in playing in my head non-stop.
I was definitely a fan of The Bugaloos as a child; I watched them faithfully every Saturday morning. My parents were aware of this and surprised me with a double whammy of a birthday present: a portable record player (it could play 33s and 45s) as well as the soundtrack album... that was quite a score. I've no idea what happened to it, though. I remember two of my favorite tracks were "It's New to You" and "Fly Away With Us". Considering that the song writers were responsible for "Killing Me Softly With His Song", the offerings on that kid's show soundtrack were pretty sophisticated.
Caroline was the textbook example of the "girl next door" type of beauty in the day. She reminds me of Karen Valentine for some reason, who I had a big crush on back then. I confess I didn't watch the Bugaloos much, but that darned song was catchy and Caroline seems like a very sweet lady. Hope to make it to a Kroft Kon some day!
A lot of guys seem to go for the high maintenance, injected lips, painted face, hair extensions, fake boobs , bimbo looking women but I’ll take the pretty girl next door type every time.
The Bugaloos blew me over every Saturday morning in '70-'71, mainly because I had a crush on Caroline, alias Joy. She brought "Joy" to my mornings, especially when Sparky the Firefly expressed his own hots for her, and she kissed him and his tail "blushed," or she petted his hand. (I could relate to Sparky, as an awkward loner who strove to fit in, and sometimes dominate.) And real estate is one of my primary interests now, as a writer on that subject, so my linkage to Caroline continues, albeit on a new level. (BTW, another Bugaloos auditioner who didn't get the part was John Reid, who went on to be manager for Queen and Elton John.) Thanks for posting!
I may have been about 7 years old at the time, I most definitely remember the Bugaloos and Caroline, right along with H.R. Puffinstuf, Lidsville, and many other Sid & Marty Croft shows.
Thanks so much for sharing this memory, Dave. I confess Caroline Ellis was my first crush, just before Laurie Partridge. I did not know Phil Collins had auditioned. He may have created music after leaving the show, but it would also change the history of Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, and the rest. But I agree hands down, the theme song is the best. You can’t be in a bad mood when you hear them sing. I dub you Davepedia! The best database for the good stuff.
Phil Collins? Wow 😲😲😲😲😲. Weekdays after school it was a must see to watch. Caroline's was adorable. Such a beautiful voice.Senses of Are World & I'm So Happy were my favorite song.

Like many, I was watching at the exact right time for this shows debut. In the early 2000’s I began noticing more and more Bugaloos fan tribute websites popping up. All with various scraps of information, photos, video clips, discussion threads, etc. All was swapped freely. While they took various approaches to the subject matter, all seemed to agree on one thing. From the first episode, a pretty butterfly lady sang to cheer up a firefly, time stopped, and we all felt safe. A generation was hooked. Further, at the end of each episode, the cast did something new and unexpected. They looked at us asking to “please write, we’d love to hear from you!” Like they had to ask. But it wouldn’t be until the 2010’s (or as we think of it ~ FOREVER!!!), when the cast interviews started happening. By phone, video interviews, zoom calls, and now Kroftcon! I’m sure the reactions were quite vocal, but hardly surprising. (And, yes, we’d like to hear more about Kroftcon, Mr. S!) While Wayne LaReya has elected to remain out of the spotlight, Caroline, John Philpott, and occasionally John McIndoe have told some wonderful stories over the years. *The cast loved working with Martha Rae and Billy Barty. *When anyone couldn’t find John Philpott on set, it was because he was off discussing drumming techniques with Billy, who had his own drum kit! Not a toy set, but one custom built for someone his size. *The Bugaloos didn’t play in England for many years, as the title too closely resembled a certain nasty word there. *When the Krofts first brought the cast to Calif., they put them up in a large Mansion. While exploring the area, they came upon a musical instruments store. There, they met a fellow Brit Reggie Dwight who had just come to the U.S. with his band hoping to make his mark. He did. We still know him by his stage name, Elton John! Caught a couple of the recent Zoom interviews. One with the Krofts and the cast, sans Wayne. But he sent his sister! Very cool. And I have to say, though I still don’t know where to write to, and even though she didn’t sing, aCaroline Ellis is still the pretty butterfly lady, and I still felt safe.

We know what it was about The Bugaloos, and it was the absolutely delicious Caroline Ellis - she was pure, well, Joy. Martha Raye had all the best lines as Benita Bizarre. And you HAD to love Woofer and Tweeter -- and, of course, Peter Platter who had vinyl records for eyes. But this was a shift from the Kroffts' usual pattern (normal guy falls into strange world of puppet creatures). The Bugaloos started in the strange world -- and stayed there. But the show was always fun, especially when Joy came into the scene.
I adored this as a kid and pretended to fly around in pink like Joy. In the late 70s they had a Kroft hour with all different shows and it seemed they didn't play this one enough. Glad she is doing good.

Thanks Dave. What a country! What are the odds that I would check my YT feed and find a video about The Bugaloos? I fondly remember the Krofft stable of Saturday morning fare. The Bugaloos, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, H R Pufnstuff. Time and maturity have made me realize what H R was Pufn. I think Sid and Marty must have been Pufn pretty hard, too. It's interesting that, after all these years, the 2 Bugaloos songs that hold up the best for me are Caroline's songs, Castles in the Air and The Senses of Our World. Was For a Friend the single? I think I heard it was somewhere back in time, but not sure. BTW, the songs are here on RUclips, or were. They take a little finding, and some won't play on RUclips Music. As of last year. Another great song from the album, which was never on the show, is Just The Memory Stays Around. And I always preferred the versions of For a Friend, It's New to You, and especially Believe, that appeared on the show, although they were shorter. Ditto Castles in the Air. I'll have to try to search for that campy csmp movie. I don' think I've seen it. Should be a hoot. Thanks for all your good work. 👍.
I'm sure i probably watched The Bugaloos, but i have no real recall of the show, so it is one of those lost memories. Caroline was an attractive girl. I've seen the 'Confessions' movie back in the 80's when i first got cable, it was on late night on one of the movie channels, but i never put together that it was Caroline from Bugaloos. I was a big Sid and Marty Krofft fan and would watch any show they produced [My favorites being 'Bigfoot And Wildboy' and 'Electra Woman And Dyna Girl'] As a collector of rare and eclectic music, i am going to have to try to find the Bugaloos album. After this, i'm watching your 'Remembering Power Records' video. Meet you there!
Loved The Bugaloos with Caroline Ellis. I especially loved Martha Raye as Benita Bizarre. Dave you should do a segment on her. She had a great movie career as a comedienne. On television she had her own TV show and was on many other tv shows including Carol Burnett. Later on she was on McMillan as Rock Hudson's housekeeper and a recurring role on Alice as Mel's wacky mother and touring as 3 girls 3 singing group. By the way my mother dated a man who dated her. He said it was an experience
I accidentally ran across this show one day when I was younger. I had never heard of it before, but I love Martha Rae. I know, I was always the weird kid..........I liked people and stuff that most adults liked and other kids didn't. Oh well. I love Martha Rae and I loved all the characters she's played. She was the only reason I watched this show.
Nice video, I was maybe 3 when they first aired and watched a lot of their reruns a few years later. Maybe you could do an update on all the bugaloos in the near future.😊
I am from Brazil, and all that i remember is that I was very, very little when they were at television... and i remember also that i used to imagine they were living with me, at my room( i am a single daugther)....and it made me feel so happy and not so alone ❤ thanks for sharing❤❤❤
Caroline was nice enough to accept my friend request on Facebook. We chatted a while back and she admitted to me that although during the closing credits all 4 cast members clearly encouraged their viewers to write them “we love to hear from you” was the disclaimer, the crew seemingly never let then see their letters and/or fan mail….hmmmm!
I actually played Collective Soul's remake of the Bugaloos theme earlier today! I love the Saturday Morning's Greatest Hits CD and play it quite often. Dave, if you haven't already heard it, give it a shot, I think you'll love it. It's modern bands doing remakes of classic themes like the Ramones doing Spider-Man's theme, etc
Where can I find the original album I'd love to have that Between Benita and Witchiepoo and Hoo Doo all three actors were great and gave the shows pizzazz
These days, the only place you're going to be able to find the original LP is at a store that sells used records. And even then, I suspect that it will be hard to find.
Her scene in Confessions from a Holiday Camp is definitely worth a look. She looks incredible not wearing her Bugaloos outfit - or anything else at all.
Caroline is a friend. She's a beautiful grandmother now and still treats her fans well. She embraced the Joy character and is proud of it to this day. Who didn't have a crush on her?
Thanks for sharing. Caroline made a guest appearance at KrofftCon a couple of years ago via Zoom and it was clear to everyone in attendance that she is a really wonderful lady.
WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!!! YOU Mean this was a REAL TV Show and NOT an LSD Trip?!!!!!! WOW!!!! mmkkaaayy.................what a very ODD and strange show! Very weird. One of the several bizarre 1960s & 1970s "kids shows" that was WAAAAYYY "out there". Thanks again Dave, another interesting history video! Be Safe out there folks ~ Peace & Health to Us All.
Look up Norman Gimbel. He wrote the theme song to the show. He did tons of tv themes as well as some extremely huge hits. And one Killing Me Softly that had some controversy behind it.
I vaguely remember seeing this as a young kid ... in Australia we got all Krofft stuff but this wasnt repeated as much as the say land of the lost or space nuts
Freewheelers also had Tom Owen. He is son of Bill Owen who played Compo on Last of the Summer Wine. LOTSW is a show I would never imagine watching with when it originally aired (but do now, a lot). Small world!
There is a "The Brady Bunch" episode ("Peter and the Wolf") which has a character named Linda, who I thought had a striking resemblance to Miss Ellis, only it was not her name in the episode's closing credits!!
@@jdsundstrom Dave your clips really are good for my memory. seriously. i can feel my brain working. so thank you stay healthy and happy to you and yours
I watched a lot of Sid & Marty Croft shows. But I missed out on The Bugaloos. I must have been watching another cartoon on another network. I will say, Caroline Ellis is a looker. 🥰
My first crush. I was SO head over heels for her, before I even knew what those feelings even were. I'm 50 now and I just watched an old episode. She still makes me feel all funny and excited. Quite possibly the cutest girl who ever lived.
i watched this show when I was a child. I loved the hair style that they had on Caroline. I asked the mother if I could get my hair cut like Hers from the show but when I got my long hair cut instead of the hair cut I wanted I was given a shag( cut in different lengths) which took me over 26 years to get my hair all one length. I would still at this time love to have this hair style even though I am older.
Also in a episode of the BBC's "Only Fools And Horses" called "Go West Young Man" in the Summer of 1981 which was the 2nd episode of the British TV series. The 2 men go to the nighttime club to meet Caroline & her female friend but don't score.
I have to say that I never watched The Bugaloos when I was a kid, mainly because there were other Saturday morning programs that I was interested in at the time ( one can only watch so many Krofft Brothers productions in her childhood ), I was not aware Caroline and the cast, except for Martha Raye, was British, very interesting for an American television show, but then, HR Puffinstuff had Jack Wild.
I was a bit old for the Kroft shows when they came out, and I would sneer at the shows as being "for little kids", but I have a confession for you: I have always been smitten by Caroline Ellis. I was old enough to have "those feelings" stir in me when I looked at her, but young enough to see that face, that smile, that sweetness, that innocence and natural beauty and wish she was my girlfriend.
From what I remember, the Bugaloos were some sort of fairy or maybe butterfly musicians 🧚♀️🎸🎹🎶🔈🎤 🥁 🦋. If so, they would have have a natural ability to fly, it wouldn't be because of their costumes.
It wasnt JUST little kids who were fans of Bugaloos, I was a senior in high school when it came on! I gotta admit, I first tuned in because I was a fan of Martha Raye's comedy. I crushed on the hunky boys, and WISHED I was as pretty as Caroline.
The art and theatre students from my college would get together Friday nights, go bar hopping until 4 am, get a nosh at an all night diner, then go to one of the apartments to watch the Saturday morning cartoons. One of the shows we watched was "The Bugaloos". Not as trippy as "HR Pufnstuf", which we use to watch, "The Bugaloos" was a close runner up.
I love all the Krofft shows, but the Bugaloos was one of my favorites too, Martha Raye was absolutely fabulous as the over the top villainess Benita Bizarre. I was 13 years old and the main reason I watched the show was because I had a crush on Jon Philpot who played courage.

@@jdsundstrom Thanks. ❤
“The Senses of Our World” is a truly beautiful song!
@@ChrisWaters It really is. ❤
I loved the bugaloos. Do you know if there’s a streaming service or anywhere else to watch them now? Love your channel.
I'm glad you are enjoying my channel. I believe you can watch some episodes right here on YT.
RUclips
I loved this show! The Krofft Brothers were a different level weird but dear Lord we all loved their shows😄
Weird? Lol...Ugh NO!! Creative, YES
He said it was an experience
dhe was a very funny woman a legend
Wasn't Martha Raye in the army too and entertained troops overseas?
@@carlasupon8804 Yes she did a lot of USO shows with Bob Hope. The movie For The Boys with Bette Midler was loosely based on her
Your mom was lucky to have a date that went out with Martha, she was one of my favorites and very talented and funny 🤣
@@carlasupon8804 yeah she waa and she did the Polident commercials
I accidentally ran across this show one day when I was younger. I had never heard of it before, but I love Martha Rae. I know, I was always the weird kid..........I liked people and stuff that most adults liked and other kids didn't. Oh well.
I love Martha Rae and I loved all the characters she's played. She was the only reason I watched this show.
It's Martha Raye
She was without a doubt the reason why I watched them.
Nice video, I was maybe 3 when they first aired and watched a lot of their reruns a few years later. Maybe you could do an update on all the bugaloos in the near future.😊
Yes Joys song "Flicker Town" stayed with me for life and it gave me a crush on her !!!
I loved all the Krofft shows, but I was so swoony for Joy when I was little.
You weren't the only one, Mike D.!
I am from Brazil, and all that i remember is that I was very, very little when they were at television... and i remember also that i used to imagine they were living with me, at my room( i am a single daugther)....and it made me feel so happy and not so alone ❤ thanks for sharing❤❤❤
Thanks for the comment!
What memories how time flies by l was just little kid fighting my brother to let me wach 💟💟
I loved H.R. Pufnstuf growing up but didn't discover Lidsville and Bugaloos until just recently. Love 'em all.
Thanks Dave, couldn't agree more!
BS
When I was a kid, I *loved* that one song The Buggaloos sang, "For A Friend".
I remember catching this in reruns later in the 70's. Yeah, Joy was why I caught those reruns.
Great video of my favorite Saturday morning shows!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't remember watching the Bugaloos' first run but now I have the series on Blu Ray. It's awesome!
She was beautiful. And a nice singer to. Aww the 70s. Let's find a time machine.
I've got that CD! It's awesome. 🙂
Where can I find the original album I'd love to have that Between Benita and Witchiepoo and Hoo Doo all three actors were great and gave the shows pizzazz
These days, the only place you're going to be able to find the original LP is at a store that sells used records. And even then, I suspect that it will be hard to find.
@@jdsundstrom I bet so and It may cost an arm and leg 🦵
Her scene in Confessions from a Holiday Camp is definitely worth a look. She looks incredible not wearing her Bugaloos outfit - or anything else at all.
I have a friend who was a big fan of the Bugaloos. So much so, he nicknamed his oldest daughter "Bugga" and taught her the theme song!
@@jdsundstrom Yes saw it. She’s the real deal
Oh wow!……as an 8 year old at the time…..I was crazy about joy…..glad to see she’s doing so well.
WAIT! WAIT!
She's on Facebook and is very nice! She wished me a happy birthday this year! Best birthday surprise ever!
So cool!
My first crush! Can't believe I watched that crazy show just to see her, but I would watch it again now at my age :)
Look up Norman Gimbel. He wrote the theme song to the show. He did tons of tv themes as well as some extremely huge hits. And one Killing Me Softly that had some controversy behind it.
What is that about "Killing"is the controversy song what is the back story about
"For some strange reason, they chose to wear wings and insect costumes." Dude, they were called the BUGALOOS.
I had a huge crush on her back then. Whenever they did a close-up of her face, my heart just melted.
"🎶We're in the air and everywhere...🎶"
Oh yeah, I had a crush on Caroline back then. What boy that ever saw the show didn't? She was definitely my reason for tuning in.
Phil Collins?? That’s a gem piece of trivia right there! Thanks for the video!
That pageboy hairstyle of the 60's/70's was so damn cute.
Super cute!
Dave you have a young mans heart especially your voice
Thanks Stewart!
@@jdsundstrom Dave your clips really are good for my memory. seriously. i can feel my brain working. so thank you stay healthy and happy to you and yours
Thanks Stewart!
I watched a lot of Sid & Marty Croft shows. But I missed out on The Bugaloos.
I must have been watching another cartoon on another network. I will say,
Caroline Ellis is a looker. 🥰
My first crush. I was SO head over heels for her, before I even knew what those feelings even were. I'm 50 now and I just watched an old episode. She still makes me feel all funny and excited. Quite possibly the cutest girl who ever lived.
I loved this show ❤️ l couldn't stop singing the song everywhere l went l would be singing it and dancing❤❤❤❤❤❤
I loved that show as a kid and I still like it it may be a kids show and crazy but I still love the older shows
This was the only show on TV that I didn't mind my brother talking during it. My eyes were glued to her.
i watched this show when I was a child.
I was 7 when I watched the Bugaloos. I loved it yet, even at 7, I knew there was something really strange about it. 🐝
Loved the show! My favorite was I.Q., and my sister's favorite was Courage. But I would pretend I was Joy.
Loved this show as a kid!!
She wished me a happy birthday on facebook! It made my day.
That's awesome! Caroline is a real sweetheart.
I was old enough to have "those feelings" stir in me when I looked at her, but young enough to see that face, that smile, that sweetness, that innocence and natural beauty and wish she was my girlfriend.
love this show so much
I saw her face just now and had an immediate reaction but I couldn't figure out why.
I must have watched the show a few times as a child.
Phil HAS become a Buggaloo!😆
From what I remember, the Bugaloos were some sort of fairy or maybe butterfly musicians 🧚♀️🎸🎹🎶🔈🎤 🥁 🦋. If so, they would have have a natural ability to fly, it wouldn't be because of their costumes.
It wasnt JUST little kids who were fans of Bugaloos, I was a senior in high school when it came on! I gotta admit, I first tuned in because I was a fan of Martha Raye's comedy. I crushed on the hunky boys, and WISHED I was as pretty as Caroline.
Remember watching the show for sure. She was the main reason I watched. Beautiful young lady for sure. That haircut and those eyes I always loved.
