As Mr Pete mentions, "Heli-Coil" is a trademark. The generic term for these taps and coils is STI (Screw Thread Insert) and will be marked "STI" or "Heli-Coil". Its pretty easy to mix up standard and STI taps (ask me how I know!). The coil's thread pitch is the same inside and out (which might be pretty obvious). The only difference is the STI tap's and coil's outside diameter is larger than the original bolt. The STI tap cuts to the outside diameter. You then install the coil insert and then the pitch and diameter are as good as new!

Being they're super hardened BRITTLE steel they obviously should not be stored together. I just drilled a 2 by 4 and have all mine standing up like little soldiers except for an electrical set I use when people put wood screws in the light switches because they took them off to paint. I wish people like that would just paint over the light switches if they can't figure out the difference between a wood screw and a machine screw! (or are too lazy/cheap to go to the store and get the right one!)

Time Sert is the new big thread repair kit, mostly used for engine block head bolt holes. The Time Sert is much larger than a Heli-Coil, and a Time Sert is actually stronger than the original tapped holes. Toyota I-4 engines are famous for ripping out head bolts, when the heads warp.

The HeliCoil set has been using that plastic applicator for at least 25 years now, maybe 30 or 35 years? I bought up a big box of brand new SAE HeliCoils, and Metric HeliCoils for maybe $5 or $10 each, per set, in 20 or more sizes. I bought every single one the guy had, but he usually always cut me some really great deals. The man is Vietnamese, and I always treated him with utmost respect, so he always gave me really good deals. The people I got some of my tools from have more value than the tools themselves, especially the old guys that are long dead and gone now.

  • @WAVETUBE84

Heli-Coil saves the day! I've installed a few... in the engine compartment. Gota be careful, you usually only get one chance. Many high end aluminum engines come with steel threaded inserts from the factory. You can adapt a airline to the intake and blow the chips out that fall in. Either way, if it works, it's faster and cheaper than tearing a engine apart...

  • @Fourcycle

Nice to see a demonstration of how it's done.
Looking at how far recessed the sparky end of the plug is, I wonder if the engine wasn't designed for a longer reach plug? Some time ago I bought a set of plugs for my car from an autoparts place and the threaded end was much longer than the ones I had taken out. After putting one in and turning the engine over by hand to be sure there was no interference, I put the rest in. The dealership service people had put the wrong plugs in! Car ran better too.

MrPete When using a Helicoil for a spark plug make sure that the insert is longer than the spark plug threads. If the plug threads are longer than the insert 2 problems can occur. The first one is the protruding threads can glow red and cause preignition. the second is that carbon can build up on the protruding threads and when the plug is removed the insert comes out with the plug.

The older packs were a steel ,box with steel dividers for all the inner tools, later ones are plastic with a foam and plastic set of holders. I bought some really cheap as I wanted imperial sizing in a metric country, so the ones I got had been sitting in a store since the 1970's, and those had the nice red steel boxes.
The other brands of spark plug repair kits use a solid machined steel block that is around 3mm wall thickness, it works well and will not come out with the plug easily. Does need a jig to set up the drill and tap to be perfectly aligned with the hole though.
Nice thing is that if you do not have a long enough insert ( for deep holes) you can just us a few in the hole, they will all be aligned perfectly.

I work repairing TV News cameras. They have magnesium-alloy bodies and every screw hole all the way down to 2.6mm diameter tends to have an individual heli-coil style thread inserted. That way immense loads and holding by such small fastenings can be assured.
I had to use a heli-coil on a late model car i own and it had just come out of its warranty right when it developed a nasty oil leak. I traced the source of the leak to the 4 cylinder twin-cam cylinder head where it had an 8mm bolt holding in a small support bracket. There was also a camshaft cover ontop of the cylinder head so i removed it and discovered the 8mm bolt had been installed at 30degrees(!), stripping any threads and entered the oil flow area (normally, design would have allowed more cast area there). After thread repair the new 8mm bolt had some thread seal added. The engine in that car hasn't dripped a bit of oil since. (i LOVE Heli-coil)....

I use these quite a bit on trucks. i just tap the hole and blow the cylinder out with shop air, then i run the engine for a minute or so with the plug out to get as much of the shavings out as possible. I'm not to concerned about the shavings ruining the engine because its just aluminum but you wouldn't want it in the cat

My problem is I have a Craftsman cultavtor 4 stroke one spark plug that's strip out has aluminum head I never try or know much bout back tap 10mm or heli. -coil plug is taper that's in head. I try my 10mm back tap it made new threads at the bottom of hole but who ever owned machine before me either try a coil or mess up the threads the plug was quite sloppy when purchase used now I was told by repair small shop I need to repair with Heli coil using 10mm x 100 pitch and he don't have that size kit so question is it possible to save this engine block? I got $100.00 in unit plus 32.00 for back tap now was told heli kit
    Any help appreciate
Also in your clip you stated Kit Won't work on taper plug is this true???

Interesting how they measure the thread diameter and pitch in metric, but the reach in imperial.
Also, wrt tapered spark plug threads, if you had the head off, I guess you could drill out the tapered thread, fit an insert, and then use a straight thread spark plug instead.

Wish you had the engine and a video about it. Those old 2 stroke Clinton’s ( I’m guessing that’s what the head is from) are as old as we are, or close.

Beware of cheap imitations! The one I bought used a standard socket wrench for the tap. The problem being after cutting the threads the tap fell into the cylinder!

      +dictare NOT GOOD!

Woulnd't you say that was user error? In my experience most people run a tap farther than they need to because they're not thinking straight about the details in the first place.

Why can't the steel grease be used on aluminum? You mentioned it'll ruin it, but I'd like to know why and how. Thanks

A question on the tap wrench: I was taught, many years ago, that with the jaw style yours has, the wrench should be the other side up than you had it so that the long face of the jaws bear on faces of the tap square as well as inside corner of the jaws, in a similar way to proper use of a crescent wrench. Does it matter, in your experience? As a side note, Heli's are the cat's meow in gray cast iron. I tend to use a different brand with a little serration near the bottom end that keeps it from walking.

+john john Thanks for watching--you are probably right on the wrench-I never noticed. But always used a crescent the correct way

Great video brother That's how a professional works,
I'm doing this trick to a heli coil that came out, got loose. Out of my spark plug hole.
I have a 2005 Harley-Davidson Fatboy M12 * 1.25. you had the exact same size as the other box that you showed us with the orange and white lettering.
Going to try to do it while the head is on the bike with the gas tank in place do you think 5" in will give me that clearance? Thank you in advance.

A tip I learned at Ford engine school If you have to do inserts with the head on the engine put the cylinder at bottom dead center of the compression stroke and fill the cylinder with foaming shaving cream ( Do NOT use the gel type) drill and tap then install the insert. then crank the engine over to blow the foam and any shavings out of the cylinder.

Thank you very much that sounds crazy but I'm going to use that method I have a 2005 Fatboy and I'm not taking the head off the engine and I'm not removing the gas tank, the shaving cream won't interfere with the oil Will everything be okay????
I love it if it works who's better than you I thank you in advance please reply. Just save my day

    • @fatboyfester
      @fatboyfester Год назад

@@-MrRichBiker1967 I have only done it a couple of times and as far as I know it didn't cause any issues with the oil. If you're worried about the cylinder walls getting stripped of the oil film you could put a couple of squirts of oil in the cylinder and bumping it over before putting the spark plug back in.

Also depends on what you're repairing they can be more expensive than a new head for things like weed eaters and cheap Chinese brands

I'd advise removing the head rather than doing this in situ, like you say you don't want tap shavings in the cylinder or goodnight bore! great vid though. a true gent passing on knowledge. kind regards

Autozone has better insert kits with a metal tool. It works in taper and gasket plugs. On cars with deep spark plug holes get a Time sert kit or better yet a Big sert kit. Get the one with the long tool.

long ago I worked at a shop where the owner used "KD" inserts.these were basically threaded tubes as the man hated helicoils for some reason(price?),anyway I wondered if you used or even heard of "KD" inserts and if so do you have an opinion?
