There is not a single wasted lyric in that song. It is a perfect description of dead end people in small towns. I often cry when my mood is right. I know those people.
You have to do this one live. Incredible artist. His ACL is also insanely good. And his goodbye retirement video of “I’m coming home” is a must. Hell of an artist and hell of a career. I hope you guys go down this rabbit hole.
What a stinkin’ treat. REK is THE consummate storyteller-probably in my top 3 list of favorites. I used to watch him live in college in the early 90s and have seen him in concert n9 fewer than 15 times. If y’all are going to go down the REK road, I’m here for every minute of it.
Robert Earl Keen is an amazing songwriter. There are plenty of great songs his recorded. Here’s a few of my favorites. Feeling Good Again Throwing Rocks Mr. Wolf & Mama Bear Something I Do
FINALLY! A Texas country artist (that I can remember). I've been waiting for one of these. Still waiting for Bleu Edmondson's "50 Dollars and a Flask of Crown" the album version.
Never heard this song before but I enjoyed the story a lot. I like story telling songs a lot. Thank you for introducing me to this artist. Never heard of him before. Good music.
REK and Lyle Lovett were roommates at TX A&M. He wrote a song called "The Front Porch Song", all about it. I highly recommend his tune "Shades of Grey"; another great story song.
REK came out of the Atl Country Houston music scene. Together with his close friend Lyle Lovett they helped pioneer the Americana music genre. I have seen him numerous times in concert and he is extremely entertaining. I lived Santa Cruz, Ca for about 30 years, which was a magnet for Amercana, alt bluegrass bands such as Paul Thorne , Lyle Lovett, Fred Eaglesmith, Joe Ely, Rodney Crowell and Peter Rowan. Interesting fact bluegrass bands adapted the resonator guitar, because as stated standard (unamplified) acoustic guitars get lost in live unmiced performances.
@@marktorrisi3921 Saw him in concert several times in Santa Cruz and as you said he is a fantastic singer/ song writer. Sawyer Brown recorded a number of his songs, including some great music videos in which he had several cameos; Mission Temple Fireworks Stand remains of my favorite songs and the Sawyer Brown video with Robert Randolph is insanely good. He actually toured as an opening act with Toby Keith for a while. Best lyric, Everyone looks good at the starting line.
@@TheOnespeedbiker Yeah I've seen him many times. Try to go whenever he is in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area. In fact, just found out yesterday I'm seeing him on March 15 with Steve Poltz. Both solo acoustic. Should be a great show. Both are great storytellers in addition to singer songwriters.
The absolute best version of this song is from his "Live in Austin, TX" performance. Especially if you enjoy a good country jam session. Trust me on this one.
Isn't the shot heard around the world April 19? I had to read the lyrics to understand what was going on in the song, my ears not the recording. Great tale once I read it. I'll look further into Mr. Keen and thanks for the introduction, Mark.
REK is from Texas he lives an hour from me. I have seen him 15 times over 20-plus years. The road goes on forever is slowed down on the cd but it's almost a rock track live check it out on his live cd dinner number 9 live at flores country store. Also check out Corpus Christie bay by him
No.2 Live Diner is the 1996 album. Lloyd Maynes is on steel guitar. There is also an intro on that album to this song that is a must. It is the track before it. He's such a charismatic performer. In the top three Texas music albums ever recorded, might be number one. So many classics.
This song reminded me of another song that had a similar story but I can't place it right now! I hate when this happens, my brain is going through about 2 billion songs trying to figure it out!
His voice was ok 🫣he is a Texas legend it’s a Texas outlaw thing y’all just didn’t probably get it there was a big movement back then Pat Green and Robert earl and many more fret artists!!! 😎Rickster
REK is a great songwriter and TX music legend. Influenced many modern songwriters like Tyler Childers. Most songs aren't this much bluegrass. A lot feature pedal steel prominently. The Whiskey has 20% Rye, and you're probably right. Aged in barrels used for something else.
@@BourbonCountryReacts Honestly they probably don't really know me. I stop in once in awhile to pick up a bottle, but don't spend a lot of time. I like sending you stuff you can't get easily, and theirs is pretty good. Cheers!

Robert Earl Keen is the Texas legend.

Why the album version? The live at Billy Bobs entire album is amazing. The man can sing…
@@hatleyhoward7193 I enjoy the instruments better on the album than at Billy Bob's. It seems too drawn out for me. But that's just my opinion.
I always thought the definitive version is from “No. 2 Live Dinner”.
@@randall-king He just sounds so good live. I’m indifferent to which live album, and have no problem with this declaration…

REK is the Godfather of Red Dirt music. This is the song equivelant of "that escalated quickly"
Yes. Roger Creager and Pat Green, among others, were influenced by him.
This is a classic REK and he has a great catalog of music! There’s definitely better versions of this song that he does!
Ray Wylie Hubbard - Conversion With the Devil. Is a really good song that is written in this style.
