Oh, you are in for a ride. He’s spectacular. One of my favorite musicians ever. His studio albums are beautifully recorded. Keep going on your exploration of Lyle. There’s so much more to discover. Listen to a song called Church next. He’s definitely country, but an alternative to much of what modern country is. Glad to see him get a rare standing ovation from Harri!
Probably my favorite song from him ! But he's got alot of good songs ! So many people are suprised when they hear him for the first time and realize just how good a songwriter he is. Always has top notch musicians with him.
I have been in love with Lyle for over 30 years. Some of the best concerts I have ever gone to and I have seem him several times. I first read about him in the Los Angeles Times they described him as a cross between Hank Williams and Elvis Costello so I knew I had to check him out. If you ever get the chance to see him live it is amazing. You will musically experience western swing, beer joint music and then you get taken to church with the gospel choir. Make sure to check out other videos with him and Francine Reed, you will not be disappointed. Plus he has that dry sense of humor.
That style of music is called Western Swing. It was developed in the 1930s in the southwest of the USA. It's a mix of traditional Cowboy Music, Mariachi, Blues and Jazz. The most featured instrument is the fiddle. Important bandleaders were Bob Wills, Milton Brown and Spade Cooley. Mostly Bob Wills, though. Bands that are playing this kind of music today are, amongst others, the Time Jumpers, Asleep at the Wheel, the Quebe Sisters and the Riders in the Sky.
Really , though, western swing don't cover it when it comes to Lyle. How about a western swing, country, folk, blues, jazz, Black gospel, bluegrass artist? Have i missed anything?
Best concert I ever attended... Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. Went for about three hours (after he had slipped on stage early and broke a bone in his elbow).
Lyle has a tremendous catalogue…. alternately hilarious and heartbreaking… and a fantastic live performer, as you can see. An excellent rabbit hole to pursue.
Lyle may be grounded in Western swing, but he is sophisticated and synthesizes all genres in an über intelligent way. Great songwriter. He is an original.
Call him a 'Storyteller' that has a unique voice, stunning musicianship with a gift for words and an intelligent showmen who loves to show off his backup band while sporting an odd haircut... And seeing him Live and hearing his between song banter and dry humor is worth the price of the ticket alone.
He's a music historian, and if you go to one of his concerts, between songs, he'll talk about the history of folk music, country western......he even does blues, and does it well!
Seeing Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, in the early 90s at Kalamazoo State Theatre was one my wife and I enjoyed very much. Don’t have the exact date but at this Theatre on the “Joshua. Judges. Ruth” tour. The songwriting and musicianship were top notch. ‘Til the Next time” is a great tune about things that are often said during some of our more shallow Conversations and encounters with the family of the deceased. i A great video came out for “Church,” a complicated and funny song when Lyle tries to end the service after a couple of hours. What transpired during that dinner cracked me up as well. Thank you for show casing so much of Lyle Lovett, Harri!
I saw him at the Marcus Amphitheater on the Milwaukee Lakefront during a joint tour with Bonnie Raitt. I can tell you the exact date, September 9, 1992. I know that date because my friend had an extra ticket to the Brewers game that night, which was very likely going to be the night that Robin Yount got hit 3000 (it was). A friend and I had tickets to the concert and it was a major toss-up but I decided to go to the concert since buying tickets was my idea in the first place. Incredible concert performed by 2 great talents.
One of the very best live performers. A very nice catalog worthy of a deep dive. His album, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, featuring Francine Reed is a diamond among gems! Got to see them live before her passing. She was special, as is he. In a word his music is “intelligent.”
Such clever lyrics!! He and Elvis Costello write such clever stuff!! Gotta hear Lyle’s She’s No Lady She’s My Wife- you must hear Ms Francine Reed that sings with Lyle. Grit and soul- love her too!!
I've seen Lyle in concert several times. He's so talented but unfortunately so underrated. He has a wicked sense of humor as you can tell by some of his songs and the stories he tells in between songs 🎶🎵
When I saw him in Portland, Maine, in 2004, at one point the spotlight reflected off his guitar, and caught some people in the front row with its glare; they laughed...so he moved it once or twice more to repeat the effect.
I went to school with Lyle and he was such an awesome friend and so down to earth! He and another classmate played the music at my Sister's wedding reception. Of course he wasn't the star he is now but I knew then that if he had the chance he would be a great Country Artist! I was right! I love this song!
He's one of the most eclectic people in music, incorporating country, folk, jazz, blues, pop, western swing, Black gospel, a little bluegrass; am I missing anything? of course the quirky sense of humor doesn't hurt ( "Creeps Like Me" )
I really think you should start at the beginning, Lyle is a wordsmith and right out of the gate he was great. 'This Old Porch', 'If I Had a Boat', 'God Will'. Live Lyle.
Harry I really enjoyed it again you did it I have heard of Lyle Lovett but I haven't heard him perform when that song was over I started clapping with you it was unbelievable keep on playing these fantastic songs please and thank you
Never heard of this song; you actually introduced me to it. Good going! What a ton of energy in this song! And great musicianship along with fun, wry lyrics. And you gotta love the "Texas wants you anyway" acceptance.
The first time I caught Lyle live was at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, TX (a very small listening room at the University of Texas). He was backed up only by his cellist, John Hagen, and a percussionist. He was performing songs from his first, and only album at the time, and I was absolutely floored by how strong his performance was, and by the strength of his songwriting! I have a good friend named, Alison Rogers, who is also a gifted singer-songwriter. She and her husband, Willis Alan Ramsey ( a legendary Texas songwriter) co-wrote this incredible song along with Lyle.
I knew you'd like this one, Harri! Lyle Lovett is great. Yeah, he was married to Julia Roberts for about a minute and a half. Lyle does country swing but he's also bluesy.
One of the artists of whom I own EVERY ONE of their albums. Though considered Country, his muse goes so many places it is amazing to follow. For a full album review, I recommend "Joshua Judges Ruth", an absolute masterpiece and a musical journey that is one of my all-time favorites. For single songs, a very short list includes "God Will", "Pontiac", "LA County", "What Do You Do", "Since The Last Time", "If I Had A Boat"...I could go on and on. Not to mention his covers, which are as great as his originals. An American treasure!!!!!
"Those boys from [South] Carolina" refers to a fantastic trio of singer/songwriter/musicians called Uncle Walt's Band. Champ Hood, Walter Hyatt, and David Ball. They weren't from Texas but Texas wanted them anyway. They left quite a legacy and are remembered very fondly.
As a Texan, I love Lyle Lovett! He is so charming. I can understand why Julia Roberts married him. He also does a great cover of Blaze Foley's "Election Day." Check it out!
Kyle is definitely a Texas man. U live in Houston and I saw him once years ago at Walgreens bf he was real famous but i recognized him. YES! He was married to Julia Roberts for a while. I saw them together in an Italian Restaurant incognito. I've always liked Lyle bc he is real and down to earth. He and his big band are FANTASTIC ‼️
Nice to see a Lyle reaction. I love the diversity of your channel. Lyle's albums are meticulously produced and very eclectic in style. To get a feel for his style range try "Church", "If I Had A Boat" and "North Dakota". And, one of his best with Francine Reed, "What Do You Do". To see him live with his Large Band - nothing better! Thanks for sharing your love of music!
I'm pretty sure you've done some Townes Van Zandt reactions. Lyle Lovitt covered his song Flying Shoes at Townes' funeral. It's my favorite version of that song and my favorite Lovitt performence.
Lyle Lovett has so many great songs it's hard to narrow down what to suggest. He and Al Green recorded a duet of "Funny How Time Slips Away" (written by Willie Nelson) that you'll like. You can't go wrong with any era of Lyle but my personal favorites are probably his 1994 album I Love Everybody with songs like "Penguins" and "Record Lady" and his 2003 album My Baby Don't Tolerate with songs like "In My Own Mind" and "Working too Hard."
A little factoid for you about Lyle's masterclass lineup. Arnold McCuller, the man in the backup vocal group that gave a short solo became a long-time backup for James Taylor. Look for him adding a bit of brilliance to "Shower The People" for JT. Mr McCuller has now retired to become an interventionist for those seeking sobriety. It's always nice to see artists like Lovett, Taylor, Clapton so relaxed in their own status that they allow other band members to shine on a stage they share.
00:33 He pronounces his last name "LOVE-it." 03:00 Not only did Lyle date Julia Roberts, he _married_ her. Unfortunately, as often happens the stress of two celebrities on the marriage led to its dissolution, though I don't believe the breakup was hugely acrimonious. Lyle later married a more local girl, and has twin six-year-olds, a girl and a boy. Lyle grew up in the Lutheran Church, part of the conservative Missouri Synod, and is intimately familiar with gospel music both black and white. His backing singers would fit right in at a COGIC worship. 03:31 This verse is a sly allusion to his and Roberts's breakup. 04:32 She's just checking in with Lyle, saying "OK, I'm out now, over to you." And _this_ verse ... *THIS* verse ... is a beautiful tribute to his friends/mentors Uncle Walt's Band, for whom he opened when an aspiring young singer/songwriter in College Station, Texas. "David" is country artist David Ball, still performing; "Champ" is Deschamps "Champ" Hood, an astonishing Django-influenced guitarist who backed (it seemed like) EVERYONE in the Austin music scene until his death of cancer in 2001, and "Walt" is Walter Hyatt, tragically killed in the ValuJet crash in 1996. 05:33 Oh, you ain't seen _nothin'_ yet. There is a hot-jazz bass break coming that'll set yer locks afire. 08:44 He's all OVER the map. His music lives at that peculiarly Texan street corner where Nashville country meets Memphis soul and blues. You deep-dive his discography, particularly the first six or seven albums, and you'll get a Cook's tour of American music, 'cos it all came by Texas and dropped off souvenirs. I mean, in this one track I heard wild country boogie-woogie rhythm section, tight Muscle Shoals horn charts, doo-wop backing vocals, Thirties hot jazz, Forties Western swing, and I probably missed some.
I saw Lyle Lovett in St David’s Hall in Cardiff in the early 90’s. I think only about 20 odd people turned up to see him but he wasn’t fazed at all and called us all down to the front of the stage and performed for almost 2 hours to us. It was an intimate and magical show. What a man, I don’t know ANY major star that would have done that.
I scrolled down a bit to check, and I did not see "Here I Am" which is funny, cerebral, bluesy, and unforgettable. You'll see...there's nobody like Lyle Lovett.
His last name is pronounced Love it. While he's quirky and his faster songs are fun, where his voice shines is through ballads. If You Were To Wake Up, Closing Time, The Ballad Of The Snow Leopard and The Tanqueray Cowboy are all beautiful.
Agree with CastleMac, Lyle does western swing, but he also has some soul based music. There is no one else like Lyle. Harri, you must listen to Lyle perform duets with Harriet Reed. She is phenomenal and he gave her equal credit in those songs. They even performed together on (can't remember his name. late night talk host from years ago). I am not a country fan, preferring soul / R&B by male artists, but I do enjoy Lyle. He always let his backup singers shine as well. FYI: his surname is pronounced Love-it. Thanks for your review and I hope you listen to Francine Reed. You will enjoy her so much. Blessings from Canada.
He is sui generis, tough to put a label on him. I suppose it's largely an evolution of Western Swing, which bends toward the "western" part of Country and Western music. Some stand outs are: -Midnight Rodeo (my personal favorite of his) -Walk Through the Bottom land -If I Had a Boat -This Old Porch
Lovett is among the best singers out there. And one of the better songwriters. His first albums are brilliant, especially "Pontiac". Songs like "Simple song", "If I had a boat", If you were to wake up" and "Church" are dazzling songwriting. He's done a splendid double covers album "Step inside this house" - doing among others Steven Froholz' "American Trilogy", Townes Van Zandt's "If I needed you" and mayby best of all; David Rodriguez' "Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy".
You really need to do "Church". Not only is it a great song but it features 2 of his long time backup singers: Swett Pea Atkinson and the incomparable Francine Reed.
I know you can't speak to everything in a few short minutes, but being a Beatles fan I'm really surprised you didn't mention the changing time signatures, I love how they use that in this song. Cheers Harri.
Great reaction! So glad you liked this. I think of Mr. Lovett as an Austin musician--a little/lot country-western, a little swing, and a sharp song-writer. Check out his charming "If I Had a Boat."
Hey Harri, Lyle does a song titled "She's No Lady". That will give you a good idea of his range. Also, you gotta hear "Church" by Lyle Lovett and His Large Band with Francine Reed. If that doesn't make your feet happy, dial 911 & check your pulse.😁
I love Lyle Lovett. I've seen him in concert at least a dozen times, both with his large band and just his core musicians. He has a very dry and quirky sense of humor that truly appeals to me and which you see in a lot of his songs, like this one. I was at the concert in Indianapolis the day he and Julia got married. It was a beautiful summer evening at an outdoor venue. This rather tall woman walked on stage wearing a wide brimmed had and a long casual white summer dress. I said to my husband that I thought she looked like Julia Roberts. Then she said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce my husband, Lyle Lovett." They'd come straight from the wedding. It was a great concert, and Lyle did apologize for cutting the encores short. One of my Lyle Lovett favorites is "If I Had a Boat." Here's a link to a live performance. ruclips.net/video/VXoIB3xb4Ts/видео.html
This style of Texas Swing was made famous by Milton Brown and his Brownies and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. The instrumentation is why it’s called Texas swing, notice the fiddle and steel vs just horn sections. Like Benny Goodman or Glen Miller. Bob Wills would have maybe three or four fiddles and steel guitar
Love your reactions brother. Lyle is a hidden gem. Please please check out la county by lyle. I love your commentary and would love to see you listen to that song. God bless
Hey Harri, his last name is pronounced like, Lyle Love-it ( like "love it or leave it"). Now, like I've seen suggested elsewhere, you HAVE TO react to She’s No Lady, She’s My Wife. I don't know how some people can do it but, once you hear that track (studio version please !!!), you WILL understand it completely. He puts things in exactly the right way so you get it, the 1st time and without question. Now. let me remind you, when you stand up to clap, the camera is pointing directly at your ... well, let's just say ... un-COMFORT-able ... 🙃
@@pattiaustin1808 Not sure what you meant but, I want to be clear, I love the song BECAUSE it is honest and shows who REALLY runs the show. Ima Southern man, and because of that, I've ALWAYS known that it's the lady. Wouldn't have it any other way ... they're definitely worth it. However, 'sno reason to avoid the truth ... "Happy wife, happy life" !!! Am I right ???
Love Lyle!! Do "If I Had a Boat"!!!
As a born Texan I approve this message.
Every song on Road to Ensenada is a true hit.
Lyle is fantastic. Now how about “She’s No Lady, She’s My Wife”.
A most PERFECT suggestion !!! I absolutely LOVE that song !!! So quirky and funny ... and TRUE !!!
Probably my favorite song from him ! But he's got alot of good songs ! So many people are suprised when they hear him for the first time and realize just how good a songwriter he is. Always has top notch musicians with him.
I also really love his song “Here I Am”. That is another song that shows his sense of humor as well.
@@rogerdaly6326 Agreed.
I played that at my brother's wedding. Marriage lasted about as long as Lyle's did to Julia.
Lyle is in a class by himself! Extraordinary, and so funny!! Check out "Here I Am"... Lyle and His Large Band!! Brilliant!
I was at this concert. He puts on one of the best shows in the business. Thank you! Xx
Lyle is a Texas icon!!!!!! I can never get enough!!!!! Glad you enjoyed his Harri!!!!! So says Austin Tx!!!!!!😎🍸
I have been in love with Lyle for over 30 years. Some of the best concerts I have ever gone to and I have seem him several times. I bring "newbies" almost every time I go to see him - they all leave Lyle fanatics.
I saw Lyle & His Large Band in Detroit, MI, at the beautiful Fox Theatre. I love everything he's ever written, performed, and sung.

ALL TRUE! George Strait used some of it too

Lyle has some really good songs. I saw him in Baltimore with his "Large Band." His album "Pontiac" is fantastic. A true country troubadour.
talented dude, there's a lot of Texas singer-songwriters with that kind of talent, a lot
I've seen Lyle about 6 times live and he puts on a good show. Lot's of good stuff there.
Best concert I ever attended... Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. Went for about three hours (after he had slipped on stage early and broke a bone in his elbow).
I love Lyle and his Large Band! They’re so great in concert. Have you heard him perform with Francine Reed? Amazing !!

Lyle may be grounded in Western swing, but he is sophisticated and synthesizes all genres in an über intelligent way. Great songwriter. He is an original.
Gotta love Lyle. He is country, but he's also got that Etta James Blues thing going on too. He also shows every sign of being a quality human.
Call him a 'Storyteller' that has a unique voice, stunning musicianship with a gift for words and an intelligent showmen who loves to show off his backup band while sporting an odd haircut...
And seeing him Live and hearing his between song banter and dry humor is worth the price of the ticket alone.
Lyle came onto the scene as a country artist, but the genre he's performing here is called western swing.
He's a music historian, and if you go to one of his concerts, between songs, he'll talk about the history of folk music, country western......he even does blues, and does it well!
I saw him ages ago when he was touring with Bonnie Raitt. Both put on a great show and when they got together at the end in was incredible.
One of the best concerts I ever attended. And I was surprised!
Love me some Lyle! Saw him live twice, once acoustic n once with his Large Band. Both shows 🔥. Here I Am is one of my fave songs. Also La to the Left!

An aside - I was really surprised to see Lyle Lovett on Blue Bloods, playing a Texas Ranger... he was really good, a wonderful actor.
What a smart set this one is...and Lyle's voice is right on....
YAY! Someone finally reacting to Lyle. He's so talented, funny, great lyrics, varied styles.
Texas swing is the best way to describe Lyle Lovett

I don't know why he's considered a country artist. To me, he's more bluesy. I just love him no matter what you call his music.
It's called Western Swing......don't go down that rabbit hole! lol...just kidding. Check out Asleep at The Wheel!
this is in my top 10 live performances list EVER!!
Damn Harri. Your eclecticism and love of music is really inspiring 🙏🏽🤎
Tulsa Ballet performed ballet to several of his songs. Magnificent.
Look up “She’s No Lady.” This was my introduction to Lyle Lovett.
Great song…
As a Texan, I love Lyle Lovett! He is so charming. I can understand why Julia Roberts married him. He also does a great cover of Blaze Foley's "Election Day." Check it out!

His voice is entrancing
Amazing artist.
Some stand outs are:
-Midnight Rodeo (my personal favorite of his)
-Walk Through the Bottom land
-If I Had a Boat
-This Old Porch
It’s not really my expertise, but I am inclined to think Americana fits as a description of genre for Lyle.
He tours constantly.....go see him live!
Love Lyle. Best hair in the biz. You oughta have a listen to "Snake Farm" or "Screw You, We're From Texas" by Ray Wylie Hubbard.
You need to do "She's no lady she's my wife."
I’ve seen LL several times. I saw him with his Large Band at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.
The girl he mentions is the actress Julia Roberts, who he was married to for a short time - it didn't work out.
He did great versions of "Summer Wind" and "Smile".
And a dark version of "Mack The Knife".
He was married to Julia. I discovered his stuff fairly late on and I LOVE him.
Quirky Works Too!
Lyle does a pretty mean blues my friend...hope all is well with you my friend
I TOTALLY AGREE ABOUT ELVIS DOING THAT PART!!!!!❤😂😢
Genuine Texas Swing
We can deal with your 😉
@@pattiaustin1808 Not sure what you meant but, I want to be clear, I love the song BECAUSE it is honest and shows who REALLY runs the show. Ima Southern man, and because of that, I've ALWAYS known that it's the lady. Wouldn't have it any other way ... they're definitely worth it.
However, 'sno reason to avoid the truth ... "Happy wife, happy life" !!! Am I right ???
Check out the song Church. Awesome
Check out his duet with Al Green of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" ......... brilliant version.
I know I'm late to the show but if you're still interested his song "Church" is incredible.
.....Step Inside This House by Lyle will blow you way...
Fun song. Nice choice!
